Usagi: Totally something superficial on the surface, like dedicate herself to trying out the sweets at all of the bakeries in her neighborhood but in reality, she's sticking with her dream to protect the world with Mamoru and her friends.

Ami: Either continue her dedication to her studies, perhaps choosing an area she is weak in and working on strengthening it, or she would pick up some new hobby or sport maybe outside her comfort zone to strengthen herself as a whole.

Rei: I'm not sure if she would even bother with resolutions as she feels she's doing good with her goals as is.

Makoto: I could see her becoming resolute in finding a boyfriend AND getting on the right track to fulfill her dreams of owning a bakery or florist shop. Maybe her resolution is finally starting to plan ot her small business.

Minako: I think she would be much like Usagi in having something superficial on the surface, like aiming towards her dream of being an idol but deep down, she just wishes to become an even stronger guardian to her princess.

Mamoru: Much like Rei, doesn't need to really set resolutions as he is grounded in where he needs to be for his goals and dreams. However, at Usagi's urging he would come up with something to appease her.

Annnd that's all I got for the moment. Most of my ideas are more anime personality based and I had to change them up a bit as I was writing this when I realized that. XD

Nice. I like what you came up with, Brit! I can totally see the Mamoru scenario. Though I'm on the fence as to whether Rei's is still very anime or if she'd have that attitude in the manga too. I think I tend to think of her as more graceful than she actually is in the manga...? (You'll probably see that below XD.) Anyway, so I'm undecided! LOL

Again I wondered to myself if "resolutions" are a thing in Japan and apparently they are. It's very common to make sure they're written down somewhere according to one source. So, I've decided to go with *how* the girls might do that - basically they're New Year's Resolution Style XD.

Usagi: Writes it on a piece of paper right at midnight and puts it on the fridge along with the rest of her family. All in kana, of course... Later, she makes another secret one stashed in her desk drawer about her and Mamoru.
Ami: Writes it in pen in the front cover of an exercise book she bought for the new school term.
Rei: Busts out her best calligraphy skills and commits it in large characters to a few sheets of lovely rice paper (a gift from her Grandfather) then burns them with a prayer in the fire room.
Makoto: Settles down with a fragrant cup of tea and after a bit of hemming and hawing, chooses one  and writes it in large curly script in her diary. (I don't remember if there's any evidence that the girls have diaries but I feel like Mako is likely to have one haha.)
Minako: Writes it in lipstick on the corner of her bedroom mirror LMAO. Naw... She writes it as a short love letter, folds it up and flies it out her window as a paper airplane... At least that's what she did the year she actually managed to decide on one XD.

Can't wait to hear some more headcanons! Every year brings a new set of resolutions after all... I wonder if anyone has any specific to an arc of the story?

I'm going to re-sign up and try to read at my own pace XD I really DO want to read the mangas, I just never feel like I have time x_x

If it helps, you can just read like an hour before the livechats like I often do. XD Honestly though, each volume doesn't take much time. You can easily split them up into two, read like 30 minutes at a time and finish it. Reading comics is much faster than books for me usually xD Add it to your list of books to read, don't treat it as a non-book and you're good! ^_^

In a very slight change of topic, I have resolutions!  Well, kind of.  I have to admit, this isn't my talent (I can't even come up with resolutions for myself )  Here we go!

Usagi: I think Usagi would promise to support her friends as they all go out to try to fulfill their dreams. After all, Mamoru and Ami would be working hard to become doctors, and Rei would be spending a lot of time at the shrine. I imagine Usagi might want to distract them a lot, trying to keep their relationships strong, even when the others should be concentrating elsewhere for a time, and I think if Usagi realized that she was hurting the other's chances to make their dreams come true, she would make it her resolution to make sure she was being the most supportive person possible (and I imagine Chibi-Usa would make sure that Usagi noticed).


Ami: Hmm..for some reason, I find Ami tricky. In my head, she makes resolutions whenever she thinks of something she would like to change, notes them down carefully, and then tries her best to live up to them. However, I think she might chose one of those resolutions to focus on for the year, and I can see her deciding to work on her work-life balance. I can see her deciding that her schoolwork and work as a senshi is important, and she is going to focus on them, but she also wants to make sure that she devotes time to seeing her friends and her mother as well – time when she isn't working on something. I can also see that putting her slightly at odds with Usagi's resolution.


Rei: Rei would have a resolution about the shrine. I think she would decide to devote more time to the shrine, and spend that time actually doing something for the shrine, not just being there. She would also probably keep her resolution to herself for the most part, because she wouldn't see any real reason in telling the others what she was going to do. She would probably assume that it is something she should have been doing anyway, and therefore she wouldn't need to tell the others she would going to do it. I suspect she would tell if someone asked, but she wouldn't think to volunteer the information.


Makoto: Makoto would have a very concrete resolution (at least I imagine so). I can see her choosing something she can measure, so she will know when she has succeeded. I suspect it would be something like learning how to out-spar Haruka, and after she decided what she would do, she would set about planning a way to manage it. I have trouble imagining Makoto setting a vague resolution like “Be kinder,” but I think she would appreciate having a goal she was working toward.


Minako: I can see Minako deciding that in the next year she will teach Artemis how to loosen up. She is determined to enjoy a year without Artemis badgering her (though she will make sure she is acting as a proper senshi, of course). She will also enlist everyone's help, whether they are willing or not, insisting that not only will it make Artemis lighten up on her, it will also make him happier than being stressed all the time and worrying about what the girls are up to.

I love how most of them tie into each other somehow. Our girls really are inseparable, aren't they~.

This sounds like the perfect premise for an anime episode styled RP.

Funny you mention that because when I first came up with the resolutions I realized I was basing it too much on anime canon rather than manga so I ended up changing Rei's to be more manga focused, I guess I had Stars Rei in mind when I thought of that. She always felt pretty put together at that point for me but after reading you and Cardea's ideas....clearly I need to reread up on Rei cause DUH. The shrine! And I think she may even be like Ami, always looking to improve herself for the benefit of her duty.

Omg Usagi's is so cute. I love it!! I feel like you have a better feel for these characters than I clearly did haha.

I really like this idea too! Gosh how did you and Diagnosed come up with better ideas that me.

For the rest, they feel spot on to me! Minako's is actually sweet. Artemis does need to loosen up a bit. xD I think whatever she does to him won't come off as sweet as it sounds cause they always have that like love-hate brother/sister thing going sometimes. Especially in Sailor V!

That said...you know for our resolutions discussion, we've totally left out the Outers. Though, I admit, they are a bit more of a challenge for me but I'll see what I can think of.

Setsuna: If this is Stars/post Stars, I think she'd be working on bettering herself as a nurse at school and as a mother figure to Hotaru. Maybe she would decide to do some more study at a university? What degree does she have now anyway since she went from what she was studying in Infinity arc to being a school nurse in Stars? XD

Hotaru: Hmm I think she would either want to work towards being a better Sailor Soldier in preparation for the future and fighting alongside Chibiusa and perhaps to her hobbies? Whatever they are after she's reborn. Does she still like lamps?? XD

Haruka: Maybe bettering herself as a whole to be the best partner for Michiru and papa for Hotaru? I'm not really sure to be honest.

Michiru: Probably something like 95% Haruka 5% Hotaru?? XD XD I'm kind of at a loss for her too.

Any other takers on New Years Resolution headcanons??

I have put the date for the live chat in my calendar!  Provided there is not another bout of chaos in my world, I will be there!  Now I just need to read over the volume again it's been a while. 

I'll bite, and I do have something for the Outers, but I don't really love what I came up with.  Still, I'll post what I have and let everyone do with it as they will.    I do love the idea Haruka decided to be a better parent, Brit-chan - I can really see that - especially with how she treats Hotaru when she is very young!  Here's what I've come up with, anyway pretty sure mine are very influenced by the anime, too, just so you know:

Michiru: I think it would be something to do with her family and her duty. I think she would most likely decide to set everyone on the path toward Crystal Tokyo, where everyone she cares about would be safe and her duty would be fulfilled. Though she wouldn't know exactly how to do that, so I think her resolution might be to find out what they needed to do to begin the rise of Crystal Tokyo.


Haruka: Haruka would decide to do something like protect the princess while NOT becoming someone under the command of Sailor Venus. And while making the fact that she is not just “one of the senshi” painfully, infuriatingly clear to everyone. So much so that half of them want to kill her, half the time which she would likely just think made it all the more entertaining.


Hotaru: I am not sure. What does she do when she isn't being a senshi, anyway? For some reason I get the feeling that she likes science, so maybe she wants to become skilled enough to be able to help Setsuna? She does have some healing capabilities after all. Hmm..I think that is what I will go with for her, though I am not sure about it.


Setsuna: Setsuna is tricky for me. I don't know what she would want to do, but I am going to say that I can see her deciding that she is going to provide a sense of stability for everyone. She is the oldest, and she has the confidence of having seen what the future could be – far more than any of the others. And she acts as a kind of leader for the Outers. For some reason, all of that combines in my head to lead to the conclusion that she might seek to create a stable aspect to the rest of their lives – which are rather chaotic a lot of the time.

Because somehow she's able to still pursue her dreams/talents AND her duty. That's just outer Senshi cool for ya...

It is hard to try to keep their manga and anime personalities seperate mainly cause the manga unfortunately gives us less on them than the anime does (and the anime really minimizes Setsuna and Hotaru's time on screen ;-; )

These are pretty good! Hotaru is kinda tricky huh? Maybe we need to have a headcanon session when we get to the point where shes reintroduced to the story. xD

For Haruka though, I kinda feel she's already doing that from the get go of the Infinity arc? especially once identities are revealed, but I can see her going the extra mile for it too. Maybe like how in the anime Haruka and Michiru stalk Usagi's house in that one episode to make sure she's ok, that kind of stuff??

Like I said above I think this needs to be a headcanon discussion when we get back to when shes rejoining the story! Maybe when we start Stars since we don't get quite as much of normal life for Hotaru in SuperS (its just little kid Hotaru to TEEN HOTARU in like one act and crazy plot going on xD).

AND WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF MUSIC GOALS FOR MICHI. DUHH. I guess I always felt she was kind of established in her career that maybe she wouldnt necessarily set any resolutions but who knows, in times of peace I'm sure she likes to challenge herself.

Oh my goodness, music for Michiru!  Yeah - cue the face palming - that is awesome and I didn't even consider it.  And Brit, you are right about Haruka already doing that now that I think about it and compare it to what she is doing in the series.  I will stick with you saying that she becomes even more obsessive about it, lol.  Especially the part about reminding everyone that they are not her boss.  Can't wait to talk to everyone in a bit!

Well since we've had our live chat, that doesn't mean discussions end there. Did everyone else get a chance to read this volume?  I've got a few discussions questions below that we didn't really cover in the live-chat. Feel free to answer one or more.

I'll probably come back to those later, but I wanted to cover something else first. I recall someone (maybe it was you, Diagnosed?) asking if we'd do a summary of the livechat and at the time, I didn't really think of doing it, but to change things up, I'm going to attempt my best!  

• We started off talking about the gorgeous artwork as the manga is known for! Especially appreciating seeing colored pages in a physical format over digital. There's just something about getting to see Naoko's illustrations in print! Also, it was noted Saturn's full page spreads she got were just A+++. Masta peece.
  
  
• Since Saturn was mentioned, it was noted that the fight with her and Master Pharaoh 90 was also A+++. Masta Peece. XD Along with poor little Hotaru's soul managing to save Chibiusa and the Inners with the last of her strength. I quote myself saying "bless that sweet cinnamonroll ;-;"
  
• A good question was brought up by Cosmos-hime! "In the 90s anime, he was brainwashed. so in the manga, was he brainwashed too and just too far gone so they had to kill him? or was it an alien who took his form after the explosion? and was raising hotaru as the perfect hoste the whole time?" It was an interesting topic and one that I'd love to see other opinions on!  I personally thought he had willingly become a vessel for the Deathbusters after the explosion that killed his wife and was near fatal for Hotaru.  The discussion led to our first bumper of the night: Prof Tomoe: Father of the Year  also lulzy mention to Diagnosed autocorrect of Tomoe to Tomorrow. • We also questioned the Deathbuster's motives and why they needed vessels, hoste and what the requirements really were for the perfect ones. What are the deathbuster's exactly?? Higher dimensional beings? Pseudo Diety's???  Why do they have an insatiable need for meatsuits!? (Credit to Diagnosed for that one) Future discussion thread to come soon I hope!
  
• We moved on to discussing Usagi and her immense bravery shown when she decides to dive into Pharaoh 90 to release her power inside.  Did she actually died there and why was it a trigger for the talismans?  Magic713 came up with the poignant comment "The talismans trigger when it seems like hope is lost." Well said!
  
• Finally, our last topic was of the inclusion of the first act of Dream in this volume. I got curious and wanted to see how it was done in the original volumes and turns out they were kept separated! Duh brittany, thats cause the Dream arc starts with Vol 1, you should remeber this XD

1. Out of the volumes for this arc, yes!  Mostly because I really enjoy the art for finale of the arc: Sailor Moon diving into Pharaoh 90, Sailor Saturn's awakening then dealing with Pharaoh 90, Sailor Moon rebirthing the world. It's got a lot of iconic scenes that stuck with me for this arc.

2. Uranus's dialogue as the world is ending, expressing how she only wanted to protect Sailor Moon. Almost echoing the thoughts of Mamoru as well.  Saturn commenting on the beauty of death right as she's about to end it for Pharaoh 90.  Also the very end where the outers accept and assure the others that they are all on the same side, Sailor Guardians all united in heart. It was really sweet to me because a lot of this arc is focused on the conflict between the two groups.

3. Unfortunately, due to the mangas fast paced nature, the villains don't do much for me. We don't actually get to learn a whole lot about the Deathbusters beyond their basic motive. I think perhaps Kaolinite may have been the most interesting character, since we got to see more of her and see her concerns and motives. I guess at this point having a big giant bad enemy at the end feels kind of cliche just because that's what we got in the first two arcs. I wish there had been a way to approach it differently but I know in the manga the big bads aren't developed much and just dropped in at the end.

I really did like the villains, even if they had no connection to Sailor Moon or the Silver Millennium in any time. I liked how the Witches 5 were counter to the Sailor Senshi in their civilian interests, as oppose to their Senshi powers (like the Ayakashi sisters were).

Last but not least, even though New Year's seems so long ago already, I've got one more headcanon!

Haruka: Find them all a new apartment just after the end of Infinity. "Ugh... Good thing we have patrons..." XD. (I feel [this article] is relevant lol.) Technically, I think they end up defeating Pharaoh 90 just before April when the new school year starts but seeing as there was no real time for resolutions other than "MISSION" in January of that year, she gets to make a second one :p.

Btw, congrats to chrissifniotis for catching up on volumes 7 & 8 in the days after the livechat! It was fun to cheer you on via Discord hehe.

My OTP is Usagi and Mamoru. In fact, it was probably my first OTP that I could remember. I love their story, and their past, plus manga and PGSM get a bonus for having the two begin falling for each other prior to discovering their past lives.

As far as other pairings are concerned, I'm pretty open to a lot of pairings that don't involve breaking up my OTP. For example, I am fine with Senshi x Shitennou; but I'm also fine with Senshi paired with other characters they've interacted with, like Motoki. It really depends on the fanfic, or fanart I find. I lean towards Chibiusa x Helios, but I've had more exposure to it through fanworks, like mangaka-chan's comic.

I do disagree with Seiya and Usagi, but I call it my OTP's friendly rival. I don't hate it and I understand why some people like it, but it is not really something I agree with. However I wouldn't call it my NOTP.

Now I would categorize villains x heroes as my NOTP, specifically Demande x Usagi; and Beryl x Mamoru. Not my OTP rival, but its straight-up enemy.

As for crackshippings, I don't do a lot, but probably the closest idea to a crackship that I like would be Shingo x Hotaru. I'm not exactly sure how I got to liking this but I enjoy the idea of it. While I don't do any romantic cross-shipping (shipping characters from different fandoms), I do think Usagi and Goku (Dragonball) would make great BroTP.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

Also, I will have a poll out this weekend for the next chat for Vol. 9. Eager to hear thoughts on it.

Wow, @magic713 all I need to do is nod vigorously in agreement... up to the crackship paragraph anyways XD.

Tbh, I don't know that I've really ever crackshipped before for Sailor Moon o.o... Op! Nope, there was one time I thought Michiru x Shingo would be cute hahaha please don't kill me.

And of course, there's always this...:

I guess I'll add Reinako as an almost OTP for me. It's one that I know probably wouldn't work out but I still love the aesthetic so much that I let myself forget that to enjoy a lot of fanwork ^^;. ...And sometimes for Ami/Minako too... Please don't kill me.

I think I do prefer Usagi x Mamoru's relationship in the manga (and certainly Chibiusa x Helios' as well... at least iirc lol) but it's not by a lot. There are so many differences in the canons that contribute to how the romance plays out, so I feel like on balance, they're all done well. The pairing is pretty timeless after all :p. (Though I realize I don't speak for everyone when I say that!)
