Imagine for an instant that you're a woman in your early 40s. You and your husband are outageously rich and famous manga artists. You regret that the success of your most popular work kind of caused two of your other projects to be interupted without any reasons.

Now, your most popular work reaches its 20th anniversary, and you feel like you still have things to change in that series. Elements you regret you put in the story. Things you thought would have been great if you put it there. Stuff you wish you thought about earlier. Dialogues you wish were less cheesy...

tl;dr: You're Naoko Takeuchi, and one day, your local Osabu tells you that it would be a neat (and would make quite a lot of profit) if you completely recreated Sailor Moon from scratch while still keeping the base of the story, and the same "fast pace". (So each arcs should be done in one year)

In this thread, post what you would think it would be like if a new manga was to be created. A brand new continuity. Would Sailor V still be there? Would the Dark Kingdom still be the same? Sailor Luna, Sailor Chibi Moon? The Outer Senshis? What would you do differently?

This is probably in the wrong category, but I thought it would be a nice little conversation to have~

My first thought would be to incorporate Sailor V more before she joins the group as Sailor Venus.  Make her a presence that impacts the story for a while and then reveal her to be the last of Usagi's guardians.

My other thought would be to include some extra pages of notes and art where more details of the characters can be revealed.  That way the fast pace is maintained but we can still get more depth and background on everyone (and I really mean everyone.  As in I want to know what Zoicyte likes to eat for breakfast).

I would incorporate the Outers and Reinako *-* and I'd give more backstory on Beryl and Endymion so it's more tragic and you can feel even more sorry for Beryl. Give the senshi unique fuku like the original designs and make their hair match their color (like Rei would have red hair when transformed) like you see in some artwork.

That's all I got for now.

Going completely against what you are asking, I would much rather see an expanded universe. Something else and new entirely but that is not Usagi story, or maybe is Usagi but as Cosmos.  (Maybe I am just dying for a Cosmos-era War arch... 

I feel like in the Stars arch she expanded the universe to its ultimate, and a new story could be told somewhere else perhaps, new a new senshi group of a different system, but similar in advancement as to me modern-ish equivalent, or maybe totally alien world, but with such awesome story telling!

Or even just advancing timelines to chibi-usa, show how crystal tokyo, when not enshrined in a deep eternal crystal sleep is really just like our time, but with flying cars and awesome tech...

Personally I would have revived the Generals after the first arc and explored the other senshi's duties as princess and why they were all chosen to be Serenity's guardians. I would flesh out Queen Serenity, all the villains, and Crystal Tokyo's background. I would have drawn the other Senshi with "Super" outfits like Super Sailor Moon. I would have written separate volumes for Rei, Ami, and Makoto that are similar to Codename Sailor V but of course set after they have awakened. It's nice to see glimpses of their personality when they're in the spotlight. Codename Sailor V made me like Minako a whole lot more (not that I disliked her before reading it).

Ah yeah, I like these ideas a lot, actually.

I think my issue with doing a Cosmos vs. Chaos War is that if she does it she can't be rushed. Something like that needs to take time and be thought out.

If she did do that arch I don't think we would know if Cosmos was truly Usagi or not unless she decided to answer it. I thought Cosmos's identity is supposed to be a "mystery even to her"? Personally, I will probably never believe Cosmos is Usagi until it comes out of Naoko's mouth. Like I get that Usagi is very powerful but I feel like the Cosmos thing is a bit of a stretch for me. I would be fine if it was someone from her lineage but it being Usagi would be annoying to me.

@ Yunie  -  I have always thought that Usagi was Cosmos. I love that idea of her power giving her immortality, and because usagi cannot bear to be alone, her power extended her immortality to all her loved ones.

But also because of her power, there was always an enemy to fight, always her power to use, and then either because her power was over extended, and could only keep her alive, and/or because the war was so bad, so hard, so much fighting that she could not keep everyone alive, until there was no one left but her. 

It is that duality to Usagi's light that interested me, it would always call the dark, always another enemy to turn or defeat, and because her power comes not just from herself but from her friends, she is at a complete loss when they are finally all gone after a bitter long eternal war.  

She must then turn and look inward to where it all started, she decides that it was when she was Eternal Sailor Moon, when she first learned of Chaos as the true source of her enemy, before she knew for certain that she was immortal, she could end it all then, if only she would let the cauldron burn. It is the nicest and most compelling way to say that an immortal wanted to kill themselves, but because she is Usagi, that would mean taking the entire universe with her...  Destroying the cauldron destroys the place where star seeds are reborn, thus ceasing rebirth, it may not blow everything up but things would stop eventually. 

And also because she is Usagi, her younger self changes her own mind and renews in her older self some hope, that she should keep fighting. 

That is the kind of story telling that I love.

Personally I'd keep the main stuff but "clean" it up, to make the Universe I created make more sense. I'm sure that in all these years, Naoko has seen the flaws in her work time and time again and has thought about what would've worked better...

First off, I'd start with the mythology. What you're saying, with a manga that's just as fast-paced as the one we have today, and that would finish in a year... I don't like that. Make it two years and we have a deal . I would keep the way the story is presented now, starting with Usagi who's a normal girl who discovers she has powers. But once the characters find out about their past lives, I'd devote a bunch of chapters to the Silver Millennium: flashbacks about their daily lives, etc. This way I'd be able to explain the world of "Sailor Moon" through the dialogue and setting. Things that need addressing:

- Does Princess Serenity have a father? Who is he? If not, where did she come from and how and why?
- What are the other Princesses' names?!? I'm pretty sure the Rei of Silver Millennium was not called "Princess Mars" and that it was just a title like "Moon Princess". And of course she wasn't "Rei" cause that'd be stupid. All of the girls need names, at least.
- And explanations about the relationships between planets and why all of these princesses from other planets were charged with protecting the princess of another planet's satellite. I do have a headcanon about this, but I'd like it to be made clear officially.
- Speaking of which. Let's make some things clear regarding the Star Seeds and the cycle of reincarnations for the senshi. So... I take it that these people's teams are always the same, in every lifetime. But then we have Chibiusa who's also got a Moon Star Seed and her OWN Silver Crystal. So basically we'd have at least two people in one lifetime who have star seeds, be they active or not (because the theory is that Usagi stops transforming after she gives birth to Chibiusa, right?). But Chibiusa's team is not formed from "other" Mercuries and Marses and Jupiters and Venuses. So umm... okay the way the teams are formed and the star seeds "planted" between generations makes it confusing. Also, if the whole cycle of reincarnations thing is true, then it means that Chibiusa is a reincarnation of a past Sailor Moon. Or is she a completely new soul because Queen Serenity didn't reincarnate? Or did she? Yeah, I need some cleaning up done here 
- The Shitennou problem needs solving, especially if they're gonna be together with the senshi. And carbon copy relationships just won't cut it if what I'm aiming for is a "perfect" version of the story.
- The cats. This is discussed on another topic. But really now... the cats are from a planet coveniently called "Mau". And they're cats but they also have human forms. And for some reason they're serving the Moon Kingdom and have crescent moon on their foreheads. Also have a headcanon here but you know... headcanon's not enough! 
- I'd also give Serenity and Endymion some more interaction because right now it's cool that they're the ideal couple and all but... would be nice to se them as actual human beings rather than abstract notions of human beings.

And yeah, that's basically it. I would also keep the shitennou alive after the Dark Kingdom arc and make them useful somehow, as Mamoru's team. But I wouldn't couple every senshi with every shitennou. I would keep Mars single and maybe couple Makoto with someone other than Nephrite. In fact, Jadeite could receive his misogynistic personality from the old anime because it'd be fun to see him and Rei absolutely LOATHE each other (and not in the rom-com love-hate sort of way). It would be annoying if everyone got perfect working and permanent relationships like Usagi and Mamoru.

And you know, I'd take the opportunity to develop my characters better, as human beings. Add details about their lives and interests, etc. And basically I'd take stuff from all past versions of Sailor Moon because they all brought something good to the table - especially the anime, which I feel did just about as much good as it did bad. No Sailor Luna or Princess Sailor Moon though. Ew. Dark Mercury or a dark senshi would be cool for a while, however. You know, take away some of the Mamoru brainwashing and give it to one of the girls.

And at the very end... I'd leave Sailor Cosmos a mystery!

EDIT: Oh and silly me, I forgot to mention all the things in Crystal Tokyo that need explanations. Like... what their lives are like there, if the senshi are forbidden from having a life outside of the palace or if they get to live out their dreams and even start families, etc. I don't expect anyone a huge explanation and stuff, but you know... just a few lines of dialogue to hint at some extra stuff. Plus there's that whole thing with the Silver Crystal of one time not working in another time but Chibiusa's crystal seems to work just fine in the past. Etc.

So yeah, what I'd want from a new manga is basically "explanations". And character development. That is all

I would get rid of Mamoru as the damsel in distress. I hate the reverse damsel distress thing. Especially if the character can defend themselves. Mamoru isn't as powerful as the senshi, but the man can fight.  The way I would write it is have the girls, Mamoru, and the generals fight as one team. Both teams support each other and don't look down on each other. Also the male characters (while not being stars of the show) would have good characterization. My big problems with female shows male characters aren't written well. The same can be said about female characters in male shows.

Yes, Sailor Moon is about the empowerment of women, but there are women out there who do have male role models and feel empowered by them. The same can be said with men. There are a lot men out there who view their mothers as role models. Chefs for examples. A lot of male chefs talk about how their mothers inspire them to cook. 

Fullmetal Alchemist is a good example of a shoenen series that well written male and female characters. 

One more thing!! I would change Chibiusa's name. I understand it's a joke, but it's terrible! Naming your kid after a pun. Then her nickname, Small Lady. These names could scar a child for life. =P

I would get rid of that theory that Usagi can only have one child.

It's always bothered me how the Silver Millenium Princesses were referred to as "Princess Venus" or "Princess Saturn". I usually call them Princess (20th Century name) of (insert planet)

Agreed on the male damsel in distress thing! Mamoru and his generals can do useful stuff, but just without the "camera" following them. As in, we follow the senshi but we also get informed about what the others have been up to. Kinda like the anime does with Neptune and Uranus in S: we know they're keeping busy and are actually doing useful stuff' but since they're not the main characters... we only see them when they interact with the main senshi. Tuxedo's presence in the '90s anime was a joke, most of the time. In the manga he at least didn't throw roses and kept the motivational speeches to a more digestible level...

I wish we knew more about their childhoods, if they even had one. To get more insight about who they are. How they came to know each other being that they're all from different planets. I know it is their calling to always protect Princess Serenity, but how did they find that out? So many things.

Also, would really love to know more about the Amazoness Quartet.

But yeah that's the way I would write it. The main focus would be on the girls, but guys would still be important to the series.
 
It would be like Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura. While he is a main character his purpose was support our lead Sakura. Also the "camera" was not him. There a few times we got the "camera" on him, but he still wasn't the focus.

This thread reminds me of an idea I had last week that I considered posting about in the Writing Guild.

What if we as a forum (or the Writing Guild of this forum) worked to create our own Ultimate Sailor Moon fan fiction? 
It would be a huge undertaking, but it would essentially be an amazing expanded universe of the original ideas, incorporating the best parts of Manga, anime(s), Myu, Live Action, and art book notes.

Yes, it wouldn't be from Takeuchi-sensei herself, but we could take what's there and work together to create all the fine details and character development ourselves.

That sounds brilliant but it would take an entire section of threads just for this project. I imagine many of the ideas and "variations" would need to be voted on (which to keep, which to give up on); and only after we were done with the "skeleton" of it all, we could start writing.

I agree with others that said expand on what's already there. Take time no rushing. One thing I would add though is more character interacts not involving senshi or villains. I love fillers.

A reply to a post written around Christmas 2014 made a week after Easter 2016 (LOL). A possible new manga should have a story Sailor Moon or another senshi made a positive influence on a pre-teen boy in need of an adult to look up to, the manga sends a message on powerful women and female role models can have on males. The friendship of Chibiusa+Hotaru (Sailor Saturn) is an example of a child befriending adults, considering Hotaru began as a loner who sought friendship. Actually the senshi are teens or as the manga/anime anthology progressed, they're now in college.

Another thing is two new senshi or helpers: Eris and Dysnomia, added to the list of "dwarf planets" where Pluto was demoted by the Intl. Astronomers Union (IAU) in the 2000s. What would they look like? What are their superpowers after transformation? And how do they meet the other senshi? The manga has to come up with a way to detail the addition of minor characters to the Sailor Moon Universe, ever-growing and discovering more things out there. The senshi are Japanese/Asian or some appeared westerner or Caucasian, so I thought a set of twin sisters of African-American or Black European ancestry to represent Eris & Dysnomia is inclusive in the world's diversity Sailor Moon fandom are made of.

And my registered post count (1173) reminds me of this: 1 sun (star), 1 moon (Earth's satellite), 7 planets and 3 dwarfs make up the 12 recognized celestial bodies of our solar system.

Same, I would have loved to see more information about the Shittennou and how they interacted with the Senshi in the Silver Millennium and how they would all react if they had been brought. 

I would love to see just more to the manga as a whole. I want her to slow the story down, develop the characters more, flesh out the plot, explain things like the past and give us glimpses of what happened back then. How did the Prince and Princess meet? Stuff like that.

I would like to have two new stories about playing with the timeline. We know so little about both Silver Millenium and Crystal Tokyio, it would be great to see the senshi lives both in the past and in the future, in particoular I would like to know more about outer senshi in the past, how did they live in solitude on their respective planets, if they used to meet sometimes, if they met the inner and the queen and princess, most of all I would like to know more about Saturn in the past... and who did they fight before the only episode we know (the destruction of the Silver Millenium), I guess they had some enemies also during that time... And about the future, everything after the wedding, their lives as princesses, and of course the adventures of Chibimoon and the Amazon Quartet and their enemies.

I honestly would go with one of two options. As this is a harder idea to attempt given Sailor Moon's natural writing.

- Either follow the originals in a very different version of the story. That adds new spins and takes on parts of the saga or maybe even makes new ones inbetween.

- Or follow up with a new generation of Sailor Senshi. Maybe expand the SM Multiverse and have other alternate universes? There are a lot of possibilities with this one.

I would have made Kunzoi canon in the manga and given sailor v a bigger role
