You are free to join or leave at any time. There are no obligations whatsoever! However, we do hold re-sign up periods from time to time. If you do not re-sign up for the club during these periods, we will remove you from the list. You can rejoin at any time, and we would love it if you can stay the whole time!

The Discord chats are not required, but more something fun that club members can do together to enjoy the manga and share our thoughts. You are highly encouraged to post your thoughts and discuss it in this thread!
Does it matter which translation I use?
Nope! You can use Kodansha, Mixx/Tokyopop or anything else you want. However, please note that for the individual act discussion threads, we will follow the shinshouban edition (the Japanese 2003 release which is what the US Kodansha version is). When I compared the Acts between this first and the Tankoubon (the version Mixx/Tokyo Pop translated) were slightly changed up in a couple of the arcs as the series was compressed from 18 volumes to 12 volumes.[/size]
How do I get one of those pretty stamps?
By reading the manga with the club of course! As well as participating in the thread and livechats (this is how i know you read it ^_^) There are stamps if you read Vol 1-6, Vol 7-12, the Short Stories and Sailor V. If you are really dedicated and have read all of the above, you get a shiny stamp! We have a spreadsheet where I'm keeping track of everyone's progress. If you feel like I've missed something, let me know and I'll fix it. ^_^
Have you earned a stamp yet? Check below the spoiler and see!

ATTN: ANDROID USERS- Go to the Google Play store and download an app called Manga Browser - Manga Reader. The Cherry Project is available for reading/ downloading. I don't know about scanlation quality but I'm downloading them now. (No I'm not. My data's too slow. ) Ads are not terribly invasive, but you can always turn off your data while reading to avoid them altogether. (You can live without your data just for an hour or so, right?)
Hmmm. If I could upload images right now I'd show you my screencap. Anyway look for a red square with black corners and yellow-orange writing. Over 500,000 downloads and 4.4 star rating.

Not exactly sure what you mean by favorite theme.
Now I'm am a totally sucker for a great story with friend and companionship, which is what this story has.....But since Sailor Moon has my number one, tip-top, absolute, very first and favorite OTP: Mamoru/Usagi that relationship kinda eclipses it for me.

I think Brit means like types of love. We see gay love, hetero love, platonic love, toxic love, etc.

I think for me, I really enjoy, as cliche as it is 20 years later, Usagi and Mamoru's destined romance, because I always liked thinking that fate causes them to meet over and over again throughout time. So essentially their love transcends time. What I also love about Usagi and Mamoru in the manga is that their initial attraction to each other isn't based on their past memories. They just genuinely have chemistry between each other. As the series goes on, the story explores their love as a form of strength for their battles. I love how Mamoru is actually more the traditional "female" supportive type role in their relationship. An opposite example I can think of is in The Legend of Zelda. We have the hero, Link, who, depending on the game, falls in love with Princess Zelda and vice versa (to me, it is assumed that they fall for each other in the various games but fate seems to keep them from really being together). Here, Princess Zelda is a supportive role. While yes, she's strong on her own, she general supports and helps Link in the final battle. In Sailor Moon, Mamoru is the Princess Zelda and I always enjoyed seeing that trope turned on its head.
And then to make it a true forming relationship, by the Dream Arc, they both end up relying on each other and become each other's strength equally. I feel like at this point they've truly become equals without feeling like one is weaker than the other.
Annnd thats just some of my thoughts on it concerning that form of love. I'd say another I enjoyed was the platonic innocent love between Helios and Chibiusa but since we don't get much of them after Dream arc and they don't quite have allt he bonding moments like in the SuperS anime, I don't have as much to discuss. At least not now off the top of my head. xD

I have to say my favorite show of love in Sialor Moon is also Mamoru and Usagi. I could write an essay on why their relationship is so good, and why it's my favorite pairing of all time from anything ever, but I don't want to do that and I'll just say yes to what Brit and magic713 said.
Other than UsaMamo, I'd say my favorite relationship is the one between the inner Senshi. They all found a friend when Usagi came into their lives, and for a few of them (specifically Rei and Makoto, but this probably also could apply to Ami and Minako), it was really the first time they had any good friends. You can tell they all care about each other very much (unfortunately, due to schedules and time constraints and such in the manga, we don't see a lot of this, but the anime, for all it's shortcomings, at least shows the girls doing things together more), and goodness, I just love their friendship.
Also shout out to the parental relationship between Usagi & Mamoru and Chibiusa, and the relationship between Usagi and her family.

It took me a long, long time to like Usagi and Mamoru and it wasn't till I read the manga that I actually began to like them.
I think my favourite kind of love is honestly the love between the senshi not just what they have for Serenity but between each other. It honestly shows positive female relationships at a time in most girls lives when it can be the exact opposite.

Oh! This reminds me, and it sorta has to do with this topic, also how different love is and viewed culturally, especially in regards to physical affection and verbal. A while back I watched a youtube video of a married couple in Japan where the wife was American and the husband, Japanese (obv). Their channel is interesting cause they often talk about cultural differences and one video was about love and the cultural difference between Japan and America.
I feel like when talking about love and types of love, especially in the case of Usagi and Mamoru, it's important to remember these cultural differences. Because inherently, Sailor Moon was written by a Japanese person with a Japanese audience in mind. Just some food for thought for the discussion I guess. xD

It took me a while to like Usagi and Mamoru as a paring as well, since the 90s anime made it rather immature and awkward. (the break up arc, I'm looking at you.) However, the manga seemed to handle it in a more mature and realistic way-which is what like Addelyn said, I didn't actually appreciate the pair until the manga.
However, I can't say the same for Haruka and Michiru's relationship. While I love them, and they are my OTP of the franchise-the manga really didn't delve deep into it, though it was clear that they were in a relationship. The 90s anime, as well as the myus did a better job exploring their adorable relationship, at least in my opinion.
However, when it came to the toxic infactuation between Prince Diamond and Usagi, I think the manga did a fantastic job. You really got the feel that diamond was seriously, 100% up to no good and pretty dang obsessed with NQS. I mean, kidnapping Usagi, putting her in a dress as though she were NQS and then force kissing her? Talk about insane! Granted, I haven't seen all of the R arc in the 90s anime-but the manga did a really good job letting you know he was a dangerous individual.
Then we have the very cute fluffy stuff between Chibiusa and Hotaru. I like how both the 90s anime and manga handled their relationship, and each gave a different perspective on the pair. The 90s anime made it more a day-to-day friendship thing, whereas the manga focused on how friendship can help through the darker points in life. I honestly low-key ship the two, since they're just so cute and I could see them begin to start dating in high school. (Parallel sailor moon totally helped with that. )

Cosmos, you expressed my thoughts exactly! While I certainly would enjoy the manga without it, I really appreciated that it showed both positive and negative types of love, because I think that's a very important message. I also really liked that a lesbian couple was one of the positive examples, but, as you said, Haruka and Michiru unfortunately don't get much focus in the manga as a couple.
However! Definitely my favorite form of love in Sailor Moon are all of the wonderful friendships. The manga shows a lot of the girls relying on each other as friends do, but has way less just lighthearted scenes of them hanging out, which is something I wish there was more of (the other versions do better with this, though!).
I also love the relationships between Usagi and Luna, and Minako and Artemis! They're not exactly the same dynamic, but both are very very cute, and you can see how much these cats love their weird owners and vice versa.

Ooh yes, thats another relationship dynamic I hadn't thought of: the Guardian/Teacher one. I love how connected they end up being to their student. The manga showcases Luna as a bit strict but understanding too in the beginning. And then after Usagi awakens her memories, poor Luna feels like she had failed her. It's almost like a motherly love. It's very sweet. <3

It's update time SM Manga Club members!
The SM Vol 1 discussions open today, 02/15! If you're new to the manga, what did you think? Feel free to grab from the questions below to help discuss what you read.
Code:
[b]1. Were you excited for this manga when it was first announced/when picked it up? Why? (In Sailor Moon's case, perhaps excited when it was rereleased in the US?)[/b]
[b]2. Do you find the characters convincing? Are they believable? Are they fully developed as complex human beings—or were they one-dimensional? [/b]
[b]3. Did you enjoy reading this act or volume? Why, or why not?[/b]
[b]4. What scenes and/or dialogue strike you as insightful, even profound? Perhaps a bit of dialog that's funny or poignant or that encapsulates a character? Maybe there's a particular comment that states the manga's thematic concerns?[/b]
[b]5. Depending on the act/volume, how do you feel about the main character(s)? Were they flawed, or were, perhaps, too perfect? [/b]
[b]6. Again, depending on the act/volume, how about the villain(s)? Pick one from this act/volume and talk about him/her for a bit. Was he/she properly threatening? Was he/she clichéd? Was he/she an interesting villain?[/b]
[b]7. What motivates different characters’ actions? Do you think those actions are justified or ethical?[/b]
[b]8. Do any characters grow or change during the course of the act/volume/series? If so, in what way?[/b]
[b]9. Let's talk artwork. Pick our your favorite panels and least favorite panels and share them. What do you like or not like about them?[/b]
[b]10. We all know the main themes in Sailor Moon are friendship, love and destiny. Are there other themes you've picked up on? What about for this act/volume that you've read?[/b]
[b]11. Why might Naoko Takeuchi have chosen to tell the story the way she did?[/b]
[b]12. If you could change anything, what would it be?[/b]
[b]13. If you could ask Naoko a question, what would you ask?[/b]
[b]14. Would you recommend this manga? Why, and to whom?[/b]
[b]15. Has the story so far lived up to your expectations?[/b]
For the live chat discussion, I have started a Doodle Poll to help pick a date and time: http://doodle.com/poll/puv44pr76gixfyv3 Please fill it out asap! We'll be holding the chat discussions on our discord channel. If you are on GC's discord but not in the SM manga club channel, let me know and I'll get you added!
And for our last reminder, The Cherry Project discussion starts on Saturday 02/18 if you decided to read it this month.
