Personality Traits: Sunset Shimmer is intelligent, studious, intuitive to magic, kind and loyal to her friends. However before she turned her life around, she was once self-absorbed, condescending, manipulative, dishonest and most of all: power-hungry. As a reformed villain, Sunset is at times insecure and lacks confidence in her abilities.
Universe Specific Information: In the My Little Pony world, ponies are the main form of civilization, residing in the country of Equestria. There is also another dimension (closely resembling our own world), which acts as sort of a mirror version of Equestria. There is magic in Equestria and in the mirror human world, magic (previously thought to be non-existant) is beginning to be discovered as well, most likely brought there from Equestria.

Introduction: Sunset Shimmer is a female unicorn pony-turned-human and former antagonist introduced in the movie My Little Pony Equestria Girls. She is a student at Canterlot High School, a former student of Princess Celestia, and a rhythm guitarist for the student band The Rainbooms.

Sunset Shimmer is originally shown to be self-absorbed, condescending, manipulative, and dishonest. She frequently insults and belittles others and thinks little of it. Sunset makes life miserable for anyone who stands in her way, threatening and blackmailing whoever does. As a result, most of the Canterlot High School student body is afraid of her.

When Sunset puts on the element of magic, she transforms into a demonic visage of herself. While in this form, she becomes more ruthless, going so far as attempting to dispose of Twilight. After she is defeated, Sunset Shimmer becomes immediately repentant and apologizes for her actions, appearing to renounce her prior dishonest and unkind ways.

Months after her defeat, Sunset Shimmer has completely discarded her old self, now fully believing in friendship, being kind to others and befriending former enemies. She is also deeply repentant for her actions in the first film, referring to her transformed self as a "raging she-demon". However, she suffers from a lack of confidence, keeping silent in situations she feels it isn't her place to speak up and falling prey to the taunting of new school antagonists: The Dazzlings. During the final battle, Sunset finally overcomes her insecurities and joins the Rainbooms in defeating the Dazzlings, gaining a half-pony form in the process.

While Sunset has managed to fully integrate herself into the group and take mentions of what she did in the past with good humor, she also harbors a fear of losing her school's newly gained trust, and she becomes deeply depressed when she believes she has let them down, despite their assurances. She also becomes increasingly irritated and stressed by her struggles to understand how magic works in the human world, briefly snapping at her friends at one point. When the human Twilight Sparkle endangers her friends, Sunset's anger explodes as she berates Twilight for meddling with forces she doesn't understand, taking her own frustrations and self-doubt out on her. However, she immediately regrets her harsh words and reaches out to Twilight in friendship at the end.


Sunset Shimmer's is shown to display a considerable level of intelligence, being ahead of her friends and classmates in school and smart enough to develop various computer applications. She even goes so far to study magic from a scientific point of view through hands-on research rather than "studying ancient books."

Sunset Shimmer was once a student under Princess Celestia, the ruler of Equestria. She is a magical prodigy but lacks humility, being quite boastful and condescending towards others, despite her mentor's teachings.  Despite all this, Celestia still has hope in her pupil and one day, shows her the Crystal Mirror. In the mirror, she sees herself as a power Alicorn--one who could rule over all of Equestria. For a moment, she notices something else but Celestia draws her away.

Sunset becomes frustrated with her teacher who refused to show her more, saying only "when she's ready". She begins researching the mirror behind Celestia's back but is soon caught by Celestia and her guards. Sunset yells at her teacher for hiding the strong magic from her, demanding that she be made a princess. Celestia refuses, telling her that the title of Princess must be earned. She removes Sunset from her position as student and banishes her from Canterlot Castle. However, Sunset has other plans and runs away into the Crystal Mirror. After Sunset runs away, Princess Celestia moves the mirror into her throne room in hopes that she may return one day and they can reconcile their differences.

It turns out the Crystal Mirror was a portal to another dimension: the human dimension. Once here, she attends Canterlot High and begins her reign of terror among the student body. She works her way through the student body, dating the most popular guy in school, Flash Sentry, and spreading rumors and lies, breaking apart numerous friendships, mainly the strong friendships of Applejack, Fluttershy, Rainbowdash, Pinkie Pie, and Rarity.

About two and a half years later, Sunset Shimmer sneaks back into Equestria through the portal, which opens once every 30 moons, with the intent of stealing the newly crowned, Princess Twilight Sparkle's Element of Magic crown. She finds the crown late at night and during a tussle with Twilight Sparkle, the crown is thrown into the Crystal Mirror. With a smirk, she follows the crown shortly after. Unfortunately, when she returns to the human world, she discovers that Fluttershy, a girl who was an easy bully target found the crown and turned it over to Principal Celestia. In order to get the crown back, she would just have to get the title of "Princess of the Fall Formal", an easy task as she had dominated the competition for the past few years.

However, Twilight Sparkle follows after her into the human world and ends up deciding to compete against her to win the crown back from her. Sunset then employs various ways to hinder and humiliate Twilight. She has her two goons, Snips and Snails, record embarrassing videos of Twilight struggling to get used to the human world and releases the videos online. Then she doctors photos to frame Twilight for ruining the dance decorations. However, Twilight's friends help to counter these ploys by improving Twilight's reputation, and Flash Sentry, Sunset Shimmer's ex-boyfriend, helps prove Twilight's innocence.

At the Fall Formal, when Twilight is named princess and given the crown, Sunset has Snips and Snails kidnap Spike and threatens to destroy the portal to Equestria unless Twilight gives her the crown. Twilight refuses to give the crown up, stating that her being stuck in the human world would be worth stopping Sunset. As Twilight's friends commend her bravery and sacrifice, Sunset snaps and attacks her. Despite Twilight and her friends' efforts, Sunset succeeds in getting the crown and puts it on. This results in a dark magic being releases, surrounding her and painfully transforming her into a demon. With her newfound powers, Sunset transforms Snips and Snails into similar-looking minions and brainwashes the other students at the school. She reveals that she never intended to destroy the portal and plans to invade and conquer Equestria with her army of teenagers.

Sunset Shimmer goes to destroy Twilight Sparkle with a powerful blast of magic. However, Twilight is able to evoke the powers of the Elements of Harmony when her friends move to protect her from the attack. Temporarily given pony-like characteristics, they use the magic of friendship to defeat Sunset Shimmer and return Snips, Snails, and the rest of the students to normal.

As everyone recovers, a beaten and repentant Sunset is reduced to tears and apologizes to everyone she's hurt. She admits to not knowing anything about friendship, to which Twilight says her friends can teach her. Sunset, Snips, and Snails are later tasked by Vice Principal Luna with rebuilding the part of school they had destroyed during their attack.


A couple months later, Sunset has reformed her villainous ways and is still adjusting to life in school, where with the exception of the Rainbooms (the nameof the band her group of friends is in), the rest of the student body still bears resentment toward her. She even resents herself for the actions she'd taken as what she refers to as a "raging she-demon." She even admits to herself and her friends that she never had a romantic interest in Flash Sentry and only dated him to make herself more popular.

When Sunset gives the Dazzlings, a group of three new girls, a tour of the school, she gets a bad vibe from them when Adagio Dazzle gets defensive about her pendant. Her suspicions are later confirmed when the Dazzlings mesmerize the students and faculty with their singing. Using a magical book with her cutie mark on the cover, Sunset sends an SOS to Princess Celestia in Equestria. Twilight Sparkler receives Sunset's message and rushes back to help her friends in the alternate dimension. There, she is greeted happily and immediately accepted as the Rainbooms' lead singer. Sunset acts in a supportive role and keeps an eye on the competition, especially the Dazzlings during the Battle of the Bands, though it seems she's feeling out of place. At one point, Sunset confronts the Dazzlings, who try to manipulate her insecurities by pointing out that the Rainbooms were reluctant to allow Sunset into the band.

When the Rainbooms lash out at each other during the final round of the Battle of the Bands, Sunset realizes what the Dazzlings' true intentions are and is able to stop the petty arguing. She even accepts partial blame due to her lack of knowledge on friendship.

When the Dazzlings overpower the Rainbooms as they fight against them, Sunset Shimmer steps up and sings on the band's behalf. Her help not only gives the Rainbooms the strength they need to defeat the Dazzlings, but she also undergoes a half-pony transformation like her friends. Afterward, Sunset joins the band as a singer and guitarist, and she uses her old journal that she communicated with Princess Celestia through to write her friendship reports to Princess Twilight Sparkle. Things are on the up and up for Sunset as the rest of the school accepts Sunset.

Not long after the events of the Battle of the Bands, the Friendship Games, a competition between Canterlot High and rival school, Crystal Prep Academy, is approaching. Sunset is confused about the senseless competition between the schools, especially when there are bigger, stranger things going on, like her friends and herself able to tap into innate Equestrian magic and "pony up", as they dub it, at certain times. With the strange magic occurrences that surround her and her friends, Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna task Sunset Shimmer with keeping magic out of the Friendship Games. However, this worries her as she fears she may fail understanding how the magic works in the human world, especially without the help of Princess Twilight.

Another Twilight sparkle appears at the school, turning out to be the human world's doppelganger of Princess Twilight Sparkle. She, too, is researching the strange magic with her science and is using a device, that is mysteriously gathering magic from Sunset Shimmers friends. During the games, Sunset is suspicious of Twilight's intentions, eventually bursting out in anger at her for meddling with things she didn't understand.

In the final competition of the Friendship Games, Twilight is pressured by Crystal Prep's Principal Cinch and her fellow students, to release the magic in order to win the games and keep their reputation as the top school. When she does, Twilight becomes overwhelmed and corrupted by the power, much in the same way as Sunset Shimmer. Sunset takes action and grabs Twilight's device, using it to harness the magic of friendship from her friends in order to stop the corrupted Twilight, who later becomes known as Midnight Sparkle. She also goes under a magical transformation, going beyond "ponying up". In the end, Sunset realizes that she is fully capable of solving her own problems and that she can't always count on someone else to do it for her.

Over the summer break, the students of Canterlot High head to Camp Everfree. All the girls, Twilight included, are all thrilled to get away from the stress and burden of dealing with all the crazy magical events that had occurred over the past year. At Camp Everfree, Sunset is paired up with Twilight in the Sapphire Tent and she becomes moral support to Twilight and her friends, who are dealing with the insecurities of dealing with their developing magic powers. While at the camp, Sunset's magic undergoes a dramatic change, and she develops the ability to sense others' thoughts, memories, and feelings through physical touch. She also helps Flash Sentry get over Princess Twilight, and they start over as friends after their bitter breakup.

When Sunset discovers strange goings-on behind the scenes at Camp Everfree, she initially suspects camp co-director and Twilight's crush, Timber Spruce. However, she later discovers it to be Timber's sister, Gloriosa Daisy. By helping Twilight overcome her fear of Midnight Sparkle, Sunset proves integral in defeating Gloriosa when she is consumed by Equestrian magic. She and her fellow Rainbooms also take part in saving Camp Everfree from closing down with a Crystal Ball fundraiser. From here, Sunset begins to wonder where all this magic is coming from.

Sunset Shimmer stumbled to the ground on to her...she stared at the strange appendages that were where her hooves used to be. There were five appendages, much like a monkeys or bear claws. She curled them in and out in awe, turning them around. What were these things? She tried to walk on all fours but realized it was very awkward, her back legs were now much longer than her front and her hooves felt even weirder. She recalled seeing monkeys and apes walking up right on two legs. Sure ponies could do that for a short time but...she tried it out anyway. Standing up full, Sunset Shimmer wobbled but managed to keep her balance. She looked around at her surroundings, noticing that the sun was setting and there seemed to be no other ponies er...beings like her around. Good, no need for anyone to get in her way.

Sunset saw a building in front of her that resembled a school, much like ones she had seen in Equestria. She turned to look at the Crystal Mirror she had just jumped through. It wasn't there. In it's place was a tall, white statue of a horse on a pedestal. She looked forward and found herself grinning, eyes filled with determination.

"Well, well, this is an interesting development."

She spoke, finding it a bit awkward at first, now realizing she didn't have a muzzle. But all these strange changes and transformations did little to surprise her. In fact, it invigorated her. Here, the powerful unicorn, Sunset Shimmer, was in a strange new world, ready to conquer it. A small breeze cause something to flutter and hit her leg. She bent and picked up a piece of paper.

"Canterlot High Sundance CHS Yearbook...Bring submittisions to Megan, Danny or Molly..." She looked up from the words on the page and looked towards the school. A malicious smile spreading yet again. This would be where she'd start, this worlds school.

Instead of walking towards the doors, she used her magic to teleport herself closer, except nothing happened. Her hands quickly went to her forhead. Her horn! Where was her horn? And her magic! She put a hand to her chin, a motion that felt natural in this world. So there was no magic in this world. Well, thats fine. There were other ways to get what she wanted.

Sunset felt excitement brimming inside her as she took a wobbly step. The next one got easier and soon she found herself comfortably striding towards the door. She gripped the handle, a strange feeling motion. It felt cool to the touch and she pulled on it. The door opened. It was time to learn everything she could about this world. Sunset couldn't help laughing. Celestia would regret everything she had done. Sunset would prove that to her.
