Universe Specific Information: In the universe of Final Fantasy XIII, there are three gods - Lindzei, the creator of Cocoon, Pulse, the creator of Pulse, and Etro, the goddess of time. These three gods were created by Bhunivelze, God himself.
Lightning was raised on Cocoon, a civilized planet that rests in the sky above Pulse, another planet full of monsters and wild encounters. On Cocoon, Lightning's life revolved around the Fal'cie, deity-like beings who basically were the only reason Cocoon's citizens were able to survive. They provided food, water, sunlight, weather, machinery, and most importantly, they kept Cocoon in the sky.
Fal'cie were the creators of L'cie - people who become Fal'cie slaves. These L'cie are granted a task by the Fal'cie that they must complete, and magical abilities by which to complete them. If they do complete the task, they turn to crystal, living eternally within. If the L'cie fail, they turn into Cie'th, mindless creatures doomed to wander forever, always trapped in their failure.
The Purge was the event that started Lightning's journey and the events of Final Fantasy XIII. During the Purge, all people, citizens or not, residing in the town of Bodhum were sent to Pulse because the government feared there were traitors to Cocoon hiding in Bodhum. Lightning escaped the train she was on with her unwanted companion, Sazh Katzroy, therefore starting her journey. Eventually, Lightning and her companions discovered that all of the cruel, catastrophic events caused by the Purge were a plan by the government and the Fal'cie to cause Cocoon's destruction. With the help of her new friends, Lightning defeated the Fal'cie and saved Cocoon.
Following her triumph, Lightning was taken to serve in the realm of Valhalla, the home of Etro, where time did not exist. She was chosen as the Goddess's Warrior, residing over Valhalla. It was here where Lightning met Caius Ballad in battle, starting the sequence of events in Final Fantasy XIII-2, in which the timeline was disturbed.
After her sister's death in Final Fantasy XIII-2, Lightning slept in crystal for hundreds of years, finally waking up just thirteen days before the end of the world. She became the Savior, destined to gather souls and take them to the new world God would create. This starts Final Fantasy: Lightning Returns, in which Lightning spends the last few days making amends with those she left behind, and putting souls to rest. With the help of her friends, Lightning discovered God's twisted plans, defeated him, and saved her sister and her friends.

Storyline Specific Information:
Dissidia Multiverse: Cosmos, the Goddess of Harmony, and Chaos, the God of Discord, are in eternal conflict, and have called upon warriors of Light and Darkness to fight for their respective sides. Between the events of Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, Lightning, among those called by Cosmos, joins a group of strangers to fight for the side of good. But in this new realm, things are not as they seem...

Additional Information: In all forms, Lightning is the epitome of strength, agility, and quick-thinking. She is light on her feet and almost unbeatable in combat. Her swordfighting and shooting skills are through the roof, making her a valuable ally to any team.
Final Fantasy XIII - Lightning has her Gunblade, a sword that can change from a blade to a gun. She also has magical abilities due to her L'cie form. These abilities include fire, water, ice, and lightning.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 - As Etro's Warrior, Lightning gains enhanced body armor. She still uses her trusted Gunblade, and she has a sort of immortality that makes it almost impossible to officially defeat her in battle. She also has the ability to make monsters fight for her after defeating them.
Lightning Returns - As the Savior, Lightning is truly immortal, and her magical/physical abilities are at their utmost potential. She has the ability to carry souls within the jeweled symbol on her armor, and she self-heals over time.
Odin - Odin is an Eidolon, a creature of legend that appears to L'cie in times of need. After her journey in XIII, Odin joins Lightning as her lifelong guardian, assisting her in battle until the end of the world.

Hours ago, Lightning had no worries in the world. She was going to be successful and smart and she was going to climb her way into the wealthiest of wealthy in Cocoon. Hours ago, she was ambitious and excited.
Hours ago, her little sister had come home from school ready to play with her mother and help make dinner with her father.
Hours ago, everyone was happy. No one was hurt. No one was dead.
Lightning's blade slashed through the next dummy, separating its left arm from the rest of its body. She continued onward, slashing the next training dummy and the next. She didn't stop; couldn't stop.
Hours ago, Lightning had enrolled in the Guardian Corps.
She was going to get stronger so she could protect her sister from anymore harm. She was going to make enough money to support them both, so that Serah wouldn't have to worry and work herself to death.
Hours ago, Lightning had changed. Something had hardened inside of her, and it would probably never thaw out again.
Hours ago, her name was Claire.
Now, she was Lightning.
