Advanced Character Profile
Character Name: Mizuno Ami (水野 亜美)
Ami's surname, 水野, contains the kanji for "water" and "field." When pronounced, it sounds somewhat like the possessive phrase "of water." Additionally, the kanji used for "water" is the first kanji for the planet Mercury, 水星 (suisei: "water" and "star"), representing her affiliation with the planet. Ami's first name, 亜美, contains the kanji for "Asia" and "beauty."
In her past life she was known as Princess Mercury.
Gender: Female
Age and Date of Birth: 14 at the beginning of the series and 16 by the end of it--in Crystal Tokyo she has an incredibly long life but physically appears to be roughly 22; September 10 (Virgo)
Used Canons: This profile incorporates manga, 90s anime, live-action, and Crystal.
Appearance: Ami's appearance betrays her bookish and quiet personality. She is of average height, roughly 157cm (5'2"), with a delicate and slender build. Her skin is a pale ivory-peach tone. Her eyes are a bright sapphire blue. They vary between looking serious and calculating and projecting Ami's innocence and gentleness. She sometimes wears round-framed glasses while studying, but her vision does not require them.
Her dark blue hair sometimes seems to be a brighter blue tone and other times appears more of a slate blue-gray. She wears it cut very short and styled very simply. Her hairstyle is a layered bob that reaches only to the nape of her neck. Her thick bangs are parted slightly to the left, and they curl under in the same fashion as her bob.
In the live-action, instead of the above hairstyle her hair is a natural dark-brown colour and very straight. It is cut at a length that just falls over her shoulders, and she most often wears it pulled back from her face. She has thin eyebrow-length bangs, slightly feathered, that are sometimes parted to the left and sometimes worn brushed straight down.
Ami's overall look is one of simplicity and modesty. She only infrequently wears jewelry or makeup.
Her most common attire is her school uniform for Juuban Junior High School and later Juuban Senior High School. She wears her school uniform traditionally, with the skirt at regulation length and brown loafers on her feet. Sometimes she layers a baggy cardigan over her uniform. When not attending school, Ami's clothing choices tend towards sweaters and skirts. Most of her clothing has lace or other feminine details. She likes longer lengths and looser fits, but she is not blind to fashion and sometimes wears outfits on the border of her comfort zone.
Personality: Ami is known as a "girl genius," and for good reason--her natural aptitude for logic and problem-solving is nearly unrivaled. She excels in academic settings, but is able to use her reasoning to real-world problems--useful when fighting against evil forces as Sailor Mercury. Not only is she naturally gifted with intelligence, she actually enjoys reading, studying, and other activities that advance her knowledge. Ami has a tendency to be too serious or take things too literally. She does have a sense of humor, but it is sometimes less apparent behind her scientific-minded approach to daily life.
Ami is shy and reserved. She has a hard time interacting with others due to her timid nature. Bold and brash personalities can completely overwhelm her less-aggressive approaches, dissuading her from speaking up. She doesn't necessarily fear others, but she doesn't like to assert herself. If it's easier to simply be quiet and step back from whatever is going on, Ami will opt for that path of less resistance. It is only when she feels extremely passionate about something that she will do otherwise. Her quietness is sometimes misinterpreted by others as indifference or arrogance. As Sailor Mercury, she is less hesitant in tough situations and more likely to take charge as the leader of a group.
Although she does not enjoy taking charge, when forced to do so Ami makes an excellent leader. She does a good job managing different personalities and providing instructive feedback and directions to a crowd. Her attitude is very business-like in situations like this; as in most things, she focuses on tasks and aims for efficiency. Checklists and graphical representations of data are easy for Ami to provide if anyone requires that she explain her stance or plan.
Ami focuses on logic rather than emotions. She does not lack emotion, but she trusts her heart less than she follows what her brain tells her. If she must choose between how she feels about something and what she observes about something, she will make a decision based on her observations. This sometimes puts her slightly at odds with sailor soldiers who act on their emotional impulses, although her devotion to her friends frequently pulls her to their side despite her personal preferences. Ami has a hard time discussing her own feelings or opening up to others about her emotional needs. She is more likely to suffer in silence than admit there is something wrong.
Ami is gentle and kind. She does not hesitate to help someone in need, even if it's unlikely that person will respond positively to her. Ami's serene and honest nature helps her form friendships with unlikely people. She is able to get through to those who might otherwise have hardened their heart against others. Ami appreciates other people's passions and interests, even if she does not necessarily share them, and that often endears her to new acquaintances.
Ami is loyal to her friends. She cherishes her friendships as some of the best things that have ever happened in her life, and there is nothing she would not do for them. Ami will unquestioningly sacrifice her health and her happiness to protect her princess and her teammates. She doesn't believe in harming others, and tends to be unusually vocal and opposed to suggestions that would involve hurting even one person--as was the case with concerns about Hotaru, Sailor Saturn.
Ami's outlook tends to be mature and somewhat dry. She gets along well with older people more than she does with those her own age. That isn't to say that she doesn't have bursts of youthful fancy, but for the most part Ami acts in a way that is sophisticated and calm. She is frequently embarrassed by the exploits of her more boisterous friends, but she almost makes a choice not to distance herself from them, even if she is trying to talk them out of their (in her mind) shameful behaviors.
Any Unique Abilities/Skills: In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, Ami is capable of dowsing (divination to locate ground water) without a wand or other apparatus. Ami is extremely intelligent, with an IQ of 300. She is the junior chess champion of Japan. She is adept at understanding and using technology.
History: During the reign of the Silver Millennium, Princess Mercury was one of the guardian sailor soldiers of Princess Serenity. Sailor Mercury fought together with the other sailor soldiers to protect their princess and her kingdom during the attack from the Dark Kingdom. Unfortunately, the guardian sailor soldiers failed in this mission and were killed. Queen Serenity sent Sailor Mercury and the others to be reborn in the present day.
In the 20th century, Mizuno Ami was the studious and demure daughter of divorced parents. Her father was a Japanese painter who frequently traveled. He taught her chess and encouraged her passion for swimming. Her mother was a doctor who worked long hours. She inspired Ami's dream of becoming a doctor herself. Although Ami lived with her mother, she was most often alone. At school, she had few friends due to her natural intelligence and reserved nature--the other students were jealous of her academic success and mistook her shyness for arrogance.
Ami's loneliness soon became a memory when she was befriended by Tsukino Usagi, Sailor Moon, and awakened to her powers as Sailor Mercury. As they fought the Dark Kingdom and met the other sailor soldiers, Ami's long afternoons at cram school and lonely nights alone in the apartment she shared with her mother turned into cheerful afternoons at the arcade and study sessions at Rei's grandfather's temple. Although she was constantly putting her life in danger to fight against evil, she was saving innocent lives and connecting with others that she shared a distant history with.
She continued to work with the other sailor soldiers throughout the many forms of Chaos that they encountered, often serving as the battle strategist and "brains" of the operation.
In the future of Crystal Tokyo, Sailor Mercury still provides her knowledge and intelligence to serve Neo Queen Serenity and her court. She has worked towards her dream of becoming a doctor, using those skills alongside her abilities as a sailor soldier. Her dedication to Neo Queen Serenity is true and loyal, as she will never forget the kindness that the blonde-haired junior high school student once extended to end her own loneliness.

Storyline Specific Information:- Metamorphosis:
Metamorphosis - Sailor Mercury is now physician/surgeon for the residents of the Crystal Palace, as well as chief technological officer of the court. She is responsible for most battle strategy and fortifications against the Black Moon Clan. Sailor Mercury offers free medical services to the general civilians once a week, but the wait times tend to be very long and she can't serve every civilian. As the Black Moon Clan has continued attacking, she's had even less time for these humanitarian efforts, which the citizens of Crystal Tokyo have taken as indication that the royal family cares less about them than before. In this timeline, the attack from the Black Moon Clan does not freeze the sailor soldiers in crystal, but instead kills Neo Queen Serenity. This traumatizing event so overwhelms Ami that she is in denial of the profound impact it has on her and refuses to face it. Even though her other friends have not left her, she is lost and withdrawn without Usagi's brilliant light. Ami seals off her emotions and throws herself into her work, unable to come to terms with a world without Usagi's love and friendship.
- Sole Survivor:
Sole Survivor - In a post-apocalyptic world, following a devastating war that destroyed millions of lives, the people of Japanese society are living off of media, entertainment, and distraction from the depressing world outside of home. The country is governed by a small group of Japan's wealthiest elites, whose main goal is to keep the citizens distracted through captivating entertainment as a means of relaxation and escape. With all of Japan glued to their screens, there is little room for revolution or protest to the way things are being run.
One of the most-anticipated entertainment shows is Sole Survivor, a game show where contestants of Japan are randomly chosen and sent to a remote island to survive on their own in the wild. Full of alliances, double-crosses, challenges, and hidden secrets, this game show provides unbeatable entertainment for all audiences. The winner of each show is given a grand prize of one million dollars, which they can use for any and all purposes they desire. On the surface, Sole Survivor sounds like a harmless game show, but there is more behind the scenes than meets the eye.
Makoto Kino has been living on her own since her parents died in the midst of the war's devastation. She hates the screens, she hates the government, and she hates the wealthy. She knows the truth behind television, and she is alone in this reality. Makoto dropped out of school and focused instead on making a living of her own, hunting for food and trading anything she could find. She has no friends, no family - only herself to rely on. When she is drafted into Sole Survivor, she is forced to accept that even she is under the government's jurisdiction, despite her immunity to entertainment.
Ami Mizuno lives comfortably, to say the least, but she is by no means wealthy. Her father, a traveling artist, was killed during the war, and her mother is constantly occupied with her medical profession. To escape the stressors of her daily life, Ami's mother uses media entertainment, just like everyone else in Japan. Choosing to focus more on her studies, Ami spends less time paying attention to screens and more time paying attention to her education. But even Ami has naiveté, and when she is drafted into Sole Survivor, she soon realizes that the government isn't all in her favor, after all.
Both girls meet on Henshin Island, where they form a very unlikely alliance in hopes of being the last two standing. But during their time together, Makoto and Ami learn that there is so much more to life than what the Japanese government has shown them, and that maybe being a survivor isn't such a bad thing after all.
Ami Mizuno, not a sailor soldier in this alternative reality, is a lonely 19-year-old young woman. Although Ami doesn't partake much of televised media, due to a general aversion to screens and preference for print, she has formed her own method of isolation. She doesn't feel like she fits in with her classmates and peers. She longs for attention from her overworked mother, but feels guilty being honest about her feelings. Instead, she threw herself into her studies and tries to be the very best daughter, wearing herself down in the quest for parental acknowledgement. As a result, she knows very little about current events of the world she lives in, having turned her focus towards the past and the page. Her preference for books is regarded as "weird" by most people. Her main hobby is excursions to abandoned libraries or demolished bookstores to "rescue" tomes for her collection.
She is in her first year of university when she receives the "invitation" to be a part of the Sole Survivor game show. Initially, Ami declines the offer. This is not gracefully accepted. Suddenly her enrollment in Shin-Tokyo University is in jeopardy, with ominous undertones that she doesn't understand. She finds herself being greeted and escorted to the filming location as though she had never turned down her "volunteer" role, and without anyone interested in talking to her about why.
That becomes the first moment she suspects there is something going on. She will learn much more when she arrives at Henshin Island.

- Eternal Senshi:
Eternal Senshi - In an alternate take on the events of the Silver Millennium, the original senshi are not killed when the Moon Kingdom falls to the Dark Kingdom. Instead, they defeat their Shitennou counterparts but still fail to save Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity from Queen Beryl. Queen Serenity uses the Silver Crystal to seal away Queen Metallia and allow all the dead to reincarnate in the far future on Earth, but she knows that her seal will not hold. As a precaution to make sure Metallia will stay defeated, she places the four Sailor Senshi, Luna, and Artemis in a ship and sends them to the future as well.
They wake up on Earth in present day with all their memories and powers intact, and are now on a mission to protect their reincarnated Princess from the revived Dark Kingdom and destroy it with the Silver Crystal once and for all.
It has been a year since Mercury disguised herself as an Earth teenager and started attending the school that their Princess goes to. Mercury does her best to stay focused on the mission, but she hates it here, on Earth. She hates the differences from her home planet, where advanced technology enhances life and intellect rules all. This place, Earth, is primitive in so many ways. The people are foreign, ruled by their basic animal needs. They made no progress. Her classmates avoid her, wary of the sharp glances from her icy eyes and jealous of her seemingly effortless top-ranking academic performance. She doesn't care what they think. She doesn't care about them at all. Mercury is generally detached and apathetic, knowing she can do nothing about this horrible place.
She relies on her teammates, especially Jupiter, for camaraderie. Anything to try and mask the loneliness in her heart. She misses the Princess every minute of every day. Being near Usagi, seeing her in class laughing with her friends... It only makes Mercury long for when that was their Princess spending time with her and the other sailor soldiers. She wants to reconnect with her so much, but she can't. She can't endanger her again. She already failed to protect her once. She has to do better this time—and that means staying at a distance and keeping it all a secret.
And yet... if the Princess were to reach out to her... she would never be able to refuse her.
Mercury had never been able to refuse her anything.
- Surviving High School:
Surviving High School - Ami Mizuno, girl genius, has the highest grades at Silver Millennium High and is a shoo-in for valedictorian. This academic marvel is known not only for her assigned school work, but is also a recognized writer of independent research articles. She's the region's highest-ranking junior chess champion, as well. A nerd among nerds, this teenager uses her intellectual pursuits to distract her from one important fact--she is incredibly lonely. Ami's excellence at school makes it difficult for her to connect with the other students. Years of uncomfortable and fake interactions with classmates have left her closed off and cautious of interacting with others. She has a similarly empty home life. (In this AU storyline, Ami is not Sailor Mercury--just a very smart and hardworking high school girl.)

In the manga, live-action, and Sailor Moon Crystal, it has three white stripes along the edge. Her short pleated skirt is the same royal blue. There is a royal blue circular medallion at the center. She wears a simple blue ribbon as her choker. Her white gloves are elbow-length, ending with three padded rolls of royal blue fabric. Her knee-high, low-heeled boots are the same royal blue. The upper edge of the boots ends in a peak, and that peak is edged with a white border. Her gold tiara has a blue oval stone in the center of her forehead. In the anime, she wears small blue circular stud earrings. In the manga, she wears the same style of earring, with one earring on her left ear and three on her right. In Sailor Moon Crystal, the order of these earrings are reversed--three earrings on her left ear and one on her right. In the live-action, she wears larger blue pearl earrings, one in each ear, and her hair is now a pale blue layered bob reminiscent of her anime and manga hairstyle.
In her "Crystal Power" form, Sailor Mercury's collar only has one stripe. There is a gold star centered on her blue choker. Her sleeves are now each comprised of two padded rolls of white fabric and a curved wing of sheer fabric with a very slight violet tint. In the anime, her earrings have changed to three blue circular studs on each lobe. The blue brooch in the center of her front bow is heart-shaped, not circular. Her back bow is larger, with long tails that reach her thighs.
(Manga and anime universes only.)In her final canon form, Sailor Mercury wears a seamless white bodysuit. Her light blue sleeves are large, bubble-shaped, and translucent. They end high on her upper arm with two padded rolls of royal blue fabric. Her white gloves are longer than before, now reaching several inches above the elbow. Attached to the upper edge of the gloves are three padded rolls of royal blue fabric. Her sailor collar is royal blue, with a single white stripe adorning the edge. Her skirt is now two layers, and appears more ruffled than pleated. The top layer is royal blue; the bottom layer is light blue. Where her skirt attaches to her white bodysuit there are two blue ribbons separated by a slight gap; they follow the same coloration pattern as her skirt--upper is dark blue and lower is light blue. Where they meet at the central v-shaped point of the waistband, there is a small gold star insignia. At the back of her waistband is a light blue bow with short tails, but longer tails of the narrow dark blue ribbon from the waistband dangle down to her knees. Her footwear is now knee-high, high-heeled white boots. The top edge of the boot dips down in a v-shape, edged with royal blue trim. At the lowest point of the v-shape there is a small gold star charm. In the center of her chest, at the lowest point of the sailor collar's neckline, is a light blue bow with a royal blue star-shaped brooch in the center. Her choker follows the general design of her waistband and the trim at the top of her boots--it forms a slight v-shape with a narrow royal blue ribbon, and at the lowest point of the v-shape is a small gold star charm. Her earrings are now small blue circular studs with dangling blue stars. Her gold tiara is narrower now and the v-shape is more defined than previous iterations. At the center of her forehead is a star-shaped blue sapphire.

Star Power Stick - Ami uses this item to transform into Sailor Mercury with "Mercury Star Power, Make Up!"
Crystal Change Rod - Ami uses this item to transform into Sailor Mercury with "Mercury Crystal Power, Make Up!"
(Anime universe only.) Mercury Crystal - This is the sailor crystal that Ami possesses as Sailor Mercury. It is heart-shaped and pale blue in colour. She uses this item to transform into Sailor Mercury with "Mercury Crystal Power, Make Up!"
(Transformation item in manga universe only.) Communicator - Ami has a communicator that she can use to contact the other sailor soldiers. This item goes through a few upgrades throughout the series. It first looks like a pink pocket calculator with a very tiny screen above the keypad.
(Anime universe only.) It later looks like a digital wristwatch with a decorative cover, but when the cover is flipped open it has a screen inside the cover and a keypad on the base. In the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, the first wristwatch variant of this communicator looks like Sailor Moon's brooch and is received as a prize from the Sailor V arcade game.
Mini Supercomputer - Luna gives Ami a pale blue, handheld supercomputer with the Mercury symbol in gold on the case. This can be used for calculations, research, and battle planning. It connects to the blue visor (Mercury Googles in the anime and VR Visor in the manga) that she can engage as Sailor Mercury, allowing the data scanned from the visor to be input and analyzed with more processing power.
Lyre - This is the weapon used for her "Mercury Aqua Rhapsody!" attack. It looks like a curved harp made of water, decorated with wings. A small motif of this symbol is visible in her Crystal Change Rod.
Water Sword - Sailor Mercury summoned a sword from standing water to block a physical sword attack from Kunzite. This sword is only used defensively.
(Live-action universe only.) Sailor Star Tambourine - This star-shaped weapon focuses Sailor Mercury's power and makes her attacks stronger. She can also change it into a sword.
(Live-action universe only.)Guardian: Sailor Mercury does not have her own guardian animal. However, she is very close to both Luna and Artemis. According to the
Sailor Moon R Nakayoshi Album, Sailor Mercury of Crystal Tokyo built Luna-P for Small Lady. In the manga, Sailor Mercury is protected by Guardian Mercury, her other self.
Antagonist Information
(This character exists only in the live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon universe.)
| Antagonist Name: Dark Mercury
Realms of Influence: Ice and dark power
Transformation Phrases: "Dark Power, Make Up!"
Antagonist Fuku: Dark Mercury wears a modified version of her sailor uniform as Sailor Mercury. Her gloves are identical as Sailor Mercury and Dark Mercury, and she wears the Dark Jewelry Star Bracelet on her left wrist. The white sleeveless bodysuit, blue sailor collar, blue skirt, and blue knee-high boots remain. However, her blue sailor collar is edged with a black tribal design instead of white stripes. The same type of design decorates the front of her boots, and her tiara is this same design in the shape of her previous metal tiara, with a blue oval gemstone in the center of her forehead. Her choker is a blue ribbon with a black tribal motif at the center and a black heart charm hanging down. This charm coordinates with the larger black heart-shaped charm hanging from the black chain wrapped around her waist. This chain overlaps twice above the white padded waistband above her skirt. Her back bow is a large bundle of black tulle. Petals of black tulle and lace are layered under her sailor collar and behind the massive blue butterfly-like adornment that replaces her front bow. In the center of that large front piece is a blue gemstone rimmed with silver. Her earrings are made of blue and black gemstones. Her light blue hair is accented with black when in her Dark Mercury form. |
Powers: Dark Power - Dark Mercury is able to swing blasts of dark energy at her opponents, using the Dark Sword.
Brainwashing - Dark Mercury can manipulate others to act as mindless drones, as she demonstrates with her homeroom class at school.
Weapons or Magical Items: Dark Jewelry Star Bracelet - The evil power of the Dark Kingdom corrupted Sailor Mercury's Jewelry Star Bracelet, causing it to become the Dark Jewelry Star Bracelet. The wristband and the normally-silver winged frame around the heart with the jewel in the center are now black. The center of the heart is still a pale pink, and it still has a blue octagonal gem in the center.
Dark Sword - Dark Mercury's weapon is a sword formed from a jagged icicle. The blade of ice is reinforced with dark power and is strong enough that it was able to break Sailor Moon's Moonlight Stick. She typically fights physically with this weapon, but is also able to use it for attacks with blasts of dark power.
History: Sailor Mercury becomes Dark Mercury when Kunzite attacks her with dark energy. At first, as her self attempts to fight off the evil influence, she appears to have a cold. The other sailor soldiers do not notice that she is acting oddly soon enough to prevent her from becoming corrupted, although Makoto tries to take care of her when Makoto believes that Ami is ill.
As Dark Mercury, she fights against her former teammates for the Dark Kingdom. Although she was created by Kunzite, she is arrogant and rude to the Shitennou and Queen Beryl, insisting that she is no one's subordinate. She picks fights with the other sailor soldiers, especially Sailor Moon, but refuses to fight during school--although she brainwashes all of the students so that they include her and exclude Usagi.
Dark Mercury is initially weakened by the power of Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal. Usagi continues to try to bring Ami back, but it is only after Dark Mercury injures Sailor Moon that Ami is no longer under the control of the Dark Kingdom. However, she still has to reconcile her trust issues with Usagi before she is willing to return as a sailor soldier.
RP Sample:Sailor Mercury flipped backwards and away from the swinging tail of the monster, just barely avoiding its intent to trip her. The blue-clad sailor soldier caught herself against the cold park paving stones and used the momentum to jump out of the way of another flailing motion from the beast. One gloved hand reached up to touch her earring, activating her visor. Sapphire eyes flickered through the data shown on the display, searching for a weak spot on the thick-skinned body.
There.
The visor beeped, confirming her suspicion, and she minimized it as she called out to her companions.
"Aim for the base of the tail!"
Another swing, then a roar, and soon she was rolling away from a falling tree, scratching her shoulder on the rough ground. Sailor Mercury scrambled to her feet, eager to help the others in the fight. She crossed her arms over her chest and summoned her powers.
"Shine Aqua Illusion!" she cried, sending a torrent of water and magic towards their opponent. The beast recoiled and roared again when it struck, freezing its legs and hindering its motion. She summoned her visor again, noting that the damage taken so far was accumulating. Hopefully this would provide Sailor Moon with an opportunity to finish the monster off.
She noticed that Sailor Venus had fallen nearby and rushed over to help her back to her feet. "Venus! Are you alright?"
