Why do some critics of Sailor Moon Crystal keep complaining about Usagi's Japanese VA being annoying?  Kotono Mitsuishi is playing Usagi the exact same way she played her in the 90s anime but she never got this much backlash for her voice back in the original anime.  Kotono is an amazingly prolific VA with some major roles as popular characters like Misato and Juri but you wouldn't know it from the people complaining about her as if she was some sort of whiny newbie.  But you know if they had a brand new VA for Usagi the same people would complain about why didn't they bring back Kotono Mitsuishi.

I honestly don't have an issue with her voice as much in Crystal as I did in the 90s anime. I absolutely hated her voice in the 90s anime, it really bugged me and was one of the many reasons I dislike Usagi.

o.o I love her voice, now and then. Forever and always. She always puts so much into her intonations and have you watched her heartbreaking scenes? Because when Usagi cries, my heart dies.

That's also because it's a bit true that her voice did change in the last 20 years. She doesn't sounds exactly like the old Usagi. It's not "spot on", so of course everyone will complain.
I'm delighted by Ami's voice, though. Can we make this thread "new voice actors general"?

Her voice actress is really amazing, she always manage to make her voice sound different no matter what's the character. She did Yayoi in Smile Precure, and Makoto in Gingitsune (both of these shows are cute as hell so watch them btw), but I almost couldn't hear any of the ways she voiced those characters in Ami. She gave her a really unique portrayal.

Beryl... Well, she sounds a lot like another magical girl villain voiced by the same woman (who did Northa from Fresh Precure, a reaaaally scary villain who had the most sadistic plans of the show), but it's fine for me, because she sounds exactly like what Beryl should be.

I admit that the voice actress is good, that she is able to put a lot of emotions into Usagi's voice, its just because Usagi whines so darn much it grates on my nerves >.>

I compare 90s!Usa and Crystal!Usa

There is a big changed. I prefer 90s!Usa just because I watched Suite Precure. Her VA voiced the mascot cat Hummy. So every time Crystal!Usa speaks I think it's Hummy.

The biggest difference I can tell is that it sounds slightly more higher pitched in Crystal but I don't see it as drastically different from the original anime that some of the critics have been saying is.  I think there was a far greater contrast with her performance as Misato in the Rebuild of Evangelion movies.  Like in the Evangelion TV series, Kotono played Misato with her Usagi-voice but in the Rebuild films, she plays Misato with the same type of voice she used for Gracia in FMA which made Misato sound older.

Honestly I think it comes down to personal preferences. Usa's Crystal voice may not sound super high pitch to you, but it does to me.

High pitch voices are one my pet peeves in animes.  Yeah it's used for cute characters, but seriously? Do some people sound that naturally high pitched? I have actually stopped watching some animes because some of the characters were so high pitched. It annoys me to know in. It's usually the magical girl mascots. 

I can tolerate Usa's Crystal voice, but I do wish they got a new VA for Usagi. She's the only returning cast member from the old anime.

Also people will complain. There will always be complainers. Like how people complain that Viz' dub did not get any of old voice cast members from the 90s dubs.

People tend to forget Usagi had three voice actors in the English dubs.

There were two in the DIC dub and one in Cloverway. I think people are always thinking of the Cloverway dub? Honestly I don't mind any of the voice actors.

I don't know it's the one I grew up with in the early 90s that was on tv. I think it was not only her voice but also the way they translated it as well. I didn't mind when I was a kid but when I was older and went to rewatch it, I started with the dub and nope! Couldn't do it.

Well the English dub had two dubbing companies.

Classic through R was done by Dic. They were the ones who edited out a lot of stuff and did the whole Fighting evil by moonlight. 

S through SuperS was done be Cloverway. They were the ones who made Neptune and Uranus cousins. Despite that their dub was more accurate than the Dic dub. Plus they used the original Japanese music.  

Chances are you saw both dubs. XD Some of voice actors did change between dubs. I love Chibiusa's Cloverway voice. It's so cute!

Dub is already getting Stephanie Sheh for the classic, but I think the reason 90% of the people are complaining about Kotono is because they have serious nostalgia filters over their eyes. There are some with legitimate complaint, don't get me wrong. For instance, I can understand not being able to see past a certain role. Example: everytime I see Colleen O'Shaughnessy on a project I cringe, not because she's terrible, but because she messed up my KOS-MOS voice in Xenosaga II. But there are a lot of people who either can't see past the filter or can't voice their opinion properly, and that is where a lot of the complaints are coming from.

This is ridiculous, but then again not everyone likes high pitch voice. The fandom is looking a way to ruin everything, is like they are not even happy about the show coming back and that pisses me off. Another thing is, you cannot expect the seiyuu have the same voice after 20 years, like seriously ~_~ at least crystal is less annoying than in the '90s.

Well no. Voices do change over time, but I wasn't expecting that the VA's voice could go any higher. Although my true complaint is that she still sounds like Hummy from Suite Precure. 

As for the fandom itself. It is dumb for people to complain about the fact we're getting a new TV series. But you know what? Who cares? Don't let those people ruin your fun. Let them waste all their energy into a hating a show. While we put all our energy to loving Crystal because we're awesome. XD

I'm not complaining about her voice lol even if a character's voice annoys me I still love the show.

I'm not letting the haters ruin my fun but I'm concerned that all the cynicism will convince Toei not to make more than the initially planned 26 episodes.  This new series might be our last chance to get a complete accurate adaptation of the manga but if Toei thinks all the cynicism from the fandom isn't worth them doing all this effort for us then they might not bother to adapt the entire manga.  And I've always wanted the S season to finally get an accurate adaptation as that was my favorite part of the manga.

Every new adaptation is going to have its critics. I think once people get use to it, it'll be better.

If it helps, I think the Japanese fans have expressed nothing but adoration for the fact that their Sailor Moon is back. (For the most part obviously, they're not a hivemind.) So that might play in Toei's favour.

To be honest I think Toei will only care about the views. The haters are still going to watch it so they can hate on it. Their view will be counted and so if there are enough views Toei may go forward with the other arcs. Money speaks people.

I don't why people don't like her voice. I mean it's the same from the original but except it sounds a bit  more high pitched in Crystal. But imo I think her voice is cute!

But.. there's just, no other voice for Japanese Usagi that I can imagine.. I mean, I think she sounds perfect! To me, Kotono's Usagi Voice IS Usagi's Voice....

I wouldn't know. I don't mind her taking back her role. I just can't stop thinking of Hummy when Usagi speaks.

I loved her voice in the 90s anime and I still love it in Crystal. ^^
