| I think it would be helpful and interesting for everyone to post the first things they do when editing a photo, or their favorite tips. I know that I personally have a few steps that I almost always go through when editing an image. I would also like to see some expert tips, like blending, adding color and lens flare, etc. Just however you would edit an image I'll show my examples here (Mine are nonsense compared to what some of you can do, I'm just putting this as an example for you to better understand what this thread is about ) Each individual step doesn't show much change, but wait until you see the before and after! - My Example:
I am using Photoshop Elements. This is the image I'm starting with (Artbook scan from Manga Style): 1. Remove Color CastThe first thing I usually do is Remove Color Cast. This picture wasn't that bad, but some of the artbook images or anime screen caps change a LOT when you use this tool. It works by asking you to select a part of the image that should be white, black, or grey. I usually go with white. Then, it edits the image's color in order for that particular spot to turn out white, black, or grey like it should be. 2. Surface BlurI use this to clear up the image. It somewhat blurs the texture, as opposed to a Gaussian Blur which blurs the entire image. If you're having trouble seeing what changed, look closely at the top left area of the picture. 3. Adjust SharpnessThis makes the image much sharper and makes up for the blur that you just added to the picture. In this image, you can especially see the difference if you look at face. 4. Adjust LevelsI pretty much just toyed around with the sliders until it looked good. You can especially tell the difference when looking at the blue on her fuku. *EXTRA* 5. Brightness & ContrastI just barely tweaked the Brightness & Contrast. This isn't really one of the routine things that I do, but I just thought it would make this particular image look better. Before and After: Even though each step didn't seem like much, in the end, the image looks MUCH clearer!
What about you? What are your go-to tools? Maybe someone could use the same image that I used to compare how we would edit it? I just want to know what you guys do to make your images look better! #agtips #ag |

| I mostly stick with the levels. Since most of the images I find are decent enough in color. |

| 1. Duplicate the layer and have it on as a Soft Light, Overlay, or Hard Light depending on the image.
2. Change the vibrance of the picture, which is what I usually do the most.
3. Edit the color range to be closer to what the main colors are. |

| --> - my steps:
1. Crop and resize ^.^2. I mainly use it for screen caps of the anime, but I have an action that sharpens and does surface blur, this is what it looks like3. Vibrance 14. Brightness/Contrast5. Levels6. Vibrance 27. Color Balance & Gradient Map

| I have a few things I almost always do. I'm just now working with color balance and it's something I think can make a big difference. My steps: 9 images - Spoiler:
Image from Mangastyle.net This is the image I am starting off with: I love the Filter: Noise - Reduce Noise on or around these settings: This is what it looks like afterwards: Then I love to make my things more vibrant: Here is what that makes it look like: Lastly for this image I'll play with the Levels: Here is the final product: The last image is to show a comparison, pretty sure you can tell which part is the original: Lastly, I find that Naoko's images tend to be on the yellow side, especially when you try to play with the vibrancy and saturation. I would suggest going to hue and saturation, choosing the "yellow" option or part and lightening it. It helps a whole lot.

| I love messing around with the PS adjustments <3 and strong colors too, but that depends on your style, I guess. ---> MY STEPS: - Crop the image - Duplicate and set to Soft Light (100%) - Duplicate again and set to Screen (20%) - Duplicate again (and sorry, but I duplicate my layers A LOT) and apply Surface Blur. - Then I started with the color adjustments: --> Curves --> Vibrance --> Selective Color --> Brightness/Contrast --> Levels --> Gradient Map --> Selective Color 2 --> Selective Color 3 - Merge and duplicate and apply Topaz Clean (I highly recommend any Topaz filter, they're great) --> Hue/Saturation --> Color Balance --> Vibrance 2 --> Selective Color 4 And that's it XD but I don't follow the same process for every image, it depends on what I am making. |

| Okay, so some of y'all are doing gradient map. Can someone explain to me how to use that/what it does? |

i use gimp but gradient maps are the same from both ps and gimp. what it does is create a solid gradient(it looks like it's on colour mode when its set on normal) and you can use it to help colour an image. i use gradient maps to add shadows, lights, and to prep pictures. (prepping images with a black and white gradient map set on soft light is a muuuuuust!) btw. i'll actually show a process done on gimp in a bit :3 and like jupiter. i have a strong liking for strong colours. xD i blame my graphics style for that tbh. this isn't as strong as my usual graphics. before: after: - Spoiler:
i used a gaussian blur at 5.0 and set it to soft light at 50% sharpen at 50. colour balance black and white gradient set on soft light at 50.7%(cause i like brighter stuff tbh, and probably to make those blues stand out more) black and white gradient map set on value at 38.6% (to add more shadows) another colour balance and finally curves.. focusing more on the overall lighting :3

| Hm. I guess I'm just confused about like how to use gradient maps. Like how do you know what colors to put? Like you put black and white with a blue image and it made the image more blue and all awesome and whatnot! |

| actually you can use gradient maps in different colour combinations, not just black and white. on deviant art there's a ton of gradient files that you can use, and they have a bunch of different colouring results. and black and white is actually like a more basic gradient map. play around with the blending modes a bit and you'll get some really interesting results. i've used them on multiply, soft light, and value(i tots forgot the equivalent of this in ps) but mostly it really depends on the colours of the gradient map and the blending mode you set the layer map at. i happen to know of a tutorial on a graphics specialized forum that is really good at explaining them. :3 |
