Okay, so the title of this thread is just one of the questions I have.

So to start off, I have severe clinically-diagnosed OCD. So this could be something real, or it could be something I'm making up in my head because I'm a perfectionist. I guess my main question is whether or not this is all real or if it's just in my head :p

So I was working on the 100 Themes thing, and I wanted to work on one of my favorite pictures of Usagi and Mamoru. I enhanced the picture first so that it was clearer and much better quality. In my opinion, after editing it, it looked like a crystal-clear, super high-quality picture. But as I worked on it, I kept randomly noticing that the picture didn't look as nice as it did after I made my first edits. It seemed like the longer I was working on it, the lower quality the image looked. One of the ways I noticed this was as I was uploading it to tinypic and photobucket. I would upload the picture, then take a look at it, and realize that it didn't look as nice as I thought it did, so I would go back and edit it. I edited the picture over and over again, so I started thinking that the more I edited, the worse it looked. Again, this could definitely, definitely be my OCD, but I thought I would check. Here's an example of the final image that I ended up making along with the original work by Naoko for comparison (from Mangastyle)

Spoiler:

So, these are my questions:
- Again, did my image really look kind of low-quality in the end or is this in my head? Does the final UsaxMamo picture look really high-quality?
- Does an image lose quality the longer you work on it?
- Does an image lose quality when you upload it to an image-hosting website? Does the image look better on your computer than it does when you upload it somewhere?
- Is it just the difference between a .jpeg and a .psd file?
- Critique? What could I have done to make the image look nicer than it does right now?

Also, I'm very aware of the change in quality that some images go through when you shrink them. The image looked great even after I made it smaller so I know that's not the issue Smile

Thank for not judging me and not thinking I'm crrrrrrrrayzay Smile

well, first, i never save in JPG. always PNG because JPG makes the image loses quality. also, sometimes, when you work with an image keep in mind that less is more.

and when you upload it to photobucket, tinypic, they will lose some of the quality.

personally, i think you may have overedited the image. idk, maybe, try to use a bit of gaussian blur, it can help. =)

I agree with Mi, I think you overedited your image just a little bit. Be careful with Photoshop adjustments, they can be tricky when you use them more than necessary. I mean, it's just a matter of practice ^^ but I see a lot of sharpen there, and the original image was pretty okay as it was.
Though yep, an image will always look better on the computer than it does when you uploaded it >.<

Mi- Awesome tips. I didn't know JPEGs lost quality!

Ai No Senshi- Omggg yes I used sharpen so much. I would sharpen it and then look and think it's not sharp enough and sharpen it some more. My OCD -.-

Thanks guys!

I didn't know about JPEGs either!

The original image looks softer so try not to sharpen too much.

My personal opinion is I would also get rid of the text, because to me it looks like too much is going on in that tiny space. If it was a siggie, then the text would be okay. But that's just my opinion.

Btw, if you upload to photobucket and your img is in JPEG, it loses even MORE quality, that's why i use tinypick or imgur, i don't know WHY this happen, but i kind noticed a while and decided to change image services when it comes to bigger graphics.
