And so begins the penultimate chapter of FR! We’re not getting into material that I’ve been mentally sitting on for four years, and I’m so excited! Though that also means I’m putting myself under a lot of pressure to measure up to my internal expectations and mental image. I’ll try not to be too critical of myself, but it’ll be difficult to do, knowing myself. ^^;;

It took me five hours to draw the ballroom. So. Much. Line. Art. D: The ballroom is based on the Galleria Grande in the Palace of Venaria in Piedmont, Italy. I saw a picture of the Galleria Grande on my Tumblr feed and my brain decided that this is what the Crystal Palace ballroom would look like (sans the chandeliers; those are purely my own addition as the Palace of Venaria has frescoes instead of chandeliers on the ceiling).

I decided to use Sailor Moon's mask from the first couple of chapters of the manga because I like the wing-like design of the mask and thought it was a bit of a shame we didn't see more of it except as part of Sailor V's costume. As for why Chibs is wearing her mother's gown, she's been shown wearing this gown in at least two official art works (one from the fifth official art book, the other is the cover of volume 12 from the shinsouban edition of the manga which shows NQS, Chibi Usa, and Chibi Chibi all in the same type of gown). This makes me think that by the time of Crystal Tokyo the moon princess gown has become the official outfit of the female members of the White Moon family and serves as an obvious indication of the wearer’s background to others (the crescent moon mark obviously also fits this role, but it’s more discrete while clothing, by their nature, is a more prominent sign of one’s status). Chibs normally wears her own pink gown around the palace (i.e. it’s her “casual” gown), but for formal events like the Jubilee Ball she wears the formal wear that reflects her lineage.

So many feels!

Another two page update. The masks for the Quartet are based on their attributes. Para and Seru I feel like are pretty easy. Jun and Besu…not so much. I was planning to give Jun a mask with peacock feathers (peacocks are sacred to the Roman goddess Juno) but my first couple of designs just ended up being too big or too ridiculous looking so I just made a miniature peacock feather design in the center of her mask. I decided to give Besu’s mask a bird motif as a nod to the fact that she was the master of the Amazon Trio, including Hawk’s Eye.

I love it so much. I have a headcannon now that Juno has a Peacock guardian.
I really enjoy reading this so much, considering my love for the quartet. I have a bit to catch up on, but darn you really know how to write a captivating story! Also, you draw JunJun better than anyone I've seen, even the anime artists XD
I can't wait to see what happens.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the Pink Moon Crystal materialized right after Chibi Moon kissed Helios. Much like how Usagi's Silver Crystal gained physical form when she desperately wanted to save a wounded Tuxedo Kamen, I think Chibi Moon's own crystal manifested physically because of her strong desire to save Helios. I'm debating whether to delve into this a little further in the next chapter, but their connection is definitely something I want to touch on.

As for Chibi Usa's parents reading her mind about her doubts, my family has on more than one occasion picked up on what I'm worried about without me actually saying anything. So for me at least, silently picking up on your worries is a superpower that parents possess.

I have literately been thinking about the last two pages for the past four years and I can't tell you how great it feels to finally draw these! I usually don't have musical accompaniment for the art that I draw, but when I heard Noctis' theme from the Final Fantasy XV soundtrack I knew this would be the song Chibi-Usa and Shou would be waltzing to.

And if you've noticed some similarities to the panels from the original Sailor Moon manga, it is completely intentional on my part. I want Chibi-Usa and Shou's meeting here to reflect the meeting between Usagi and Mamoru at the Kingdom of D ball in Act 4, albeit with a few changes. I thought it was weird that Mamoru sorta just grabs Usagi and starts dancing with her in the manga (granted Usagi didn't seem to mind, but still...). I instead prefer how their encounter is depicted in Sailor Moon Crystal, where he asks her to dance with him, and that's the scene that I mirrored here.

a) After this chapter, I have one more chapter left to draw. I also have an idea for a sequel in mind, but there are still a lot of gaps in the plot that I haven't figured out yet.

b) Hehe, that's a secret! You'll see.

Awww that was such a sweet reveal. I love her reaching up to take off his mask. Just like how Usagi put the mask up to Mamoru's face. Lovely call back!
