So, I don't normally watch horror films, but was after watching the anime Kimi ni Todoke, I feel like I need to watch The Ring. If you are unfamiliar with this anime, the main character named Sawako, is called Sadako by most of her classmates because of her similarity in appearance to the character from the Ring. If you like a good, sweet romance anime, I suggest it!

I've yet to watch The Ring, but I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations for other Japanese horror films. I'm not into anything that's too over the top, and I don't like things that have gore for the sake of gore or are unnecessarily disgusting and twisted.

I was thinking about starting with the Japanese versions of the Ring and the Grudge. Shocked Are these going to scare the chibi out of me?

Most likely, J-Horror is the scariest form of anything ever.

Would not recommend any J-Horror movie unless you're quite a tough person! Miki is not a tough person T.T She's scared of everything.

Hmm I gotta admit.

Grudge 2-3 American is actually GOOD in the sense it's rather cohesive storytelling. Grudge 3 is actually better than the Japanese version to me.

As for other horrors I've seen and rec:

Reincarnation (standard must see of Japanese Horror)

Creepy Hide and Seek (Is interesting actually)

Kowai Onna (colletion of short horror stories that range from interesting to somewhat weird but not bad- maybe a little corny.)

Dark Tales from Japan (Another thing of collection of horror stories)

Suicide Circle (Which is more of a thinker kind of movie but it is a thriller and questions things)- There is also Noriko's Dinner table, that's a sequel/or prequel to the movie. Suggest to watch it later because it actually makes the former make more sense I believe.

Apartment 1303- (another horror movie that makes sense)

One Missed Call (1 and 2) Both are pretty good but only the Japanese version. The English adaptation is decent in what it tries to do.

Osama Game is utterly great story overall, I think you'll enjoy it. I rec it highly.

Red Shoes (I think it's another South Korean horror story)

Tale of the Fox Child- Is a drama made in South Korea. It's good and you can find it on Dramafever.

Hansel and Gretal- another Korean movie that's not scary overall but the story is interesting and I rather liked it myself. There's no unnecessary gore or blood in it, so yeah.

Edit: forgot to add "The Locker" j-horror movie with a sequel.

Whatever you do- don't watch Spiral (Uzumaki). Mostly because when I watched it, it was strange and made little sense to me. Though maybe I should rewatch it? I don't know. Another to be cautious about is the Tomie series. Which is good for the first few of them but it drags out as a series really.

Marebito is eh.. not sure, it's creepy in a way but.. I don't know if you'd like it.

Also the anime-ish side, Midori is plan and simply heartbreaking in terms of what the girl went through and the fact she joined a freakshow after her mother had died. Only watch this if you're interested in the animation really because of the rumor that this guy finished it all by himself.

So, yes, hope that helps. =3

EDIT: More movies I forgot

Death Bell- Korean but good too. There's a sequel to it.

There's another movie, but I've forgotten it. It's on the tip of my tongue and it has to do with these girls having to stay-
Oh right

Something Stairwell.. NO Wishing stairs! That's what it was. Wishing Stairs

there's also Voice- which is told from the ghost perspective.
