Setsuna's first name is written in hiragana and thus has no official "meaning". Her first name sounds like the common word for "moment/instant".

She is sometimes referred to as "Princess Pluto" when in her formal attire.

Appearance: Setsuna stands at 178cm (approximately 5'10"), the tallest of the sailor soldiers. Her form is lean and mature—she appears older than her comrades, although she does not resemble her mysterious chronological age. She has richer, darker skin tone of a tan hue. (The 90s anime shows her with a peach skin tone similar to the others.) There is a serenity and wisdom to her facial expression. Her eyes are a rich garnet hue, framed with dark lashes and below arched brows.

Setsuna's hair is a dark green colour, almost black in some lighting, often shown with emerald highlights. It is extremely long, falling to her calves. She wears it pulled away from her face, with the upper section of hair gathered into a bun. The rest is left loose. Her bangs are long, with a soft, tapered edge.

When not in her uniform as Sailor Pluto, Setsuna opts for fashionable and possibly designer attire. She is often depicted wearing visible lipstick and tasteful jewelry. Her sense of style is more mature and sophisticated than the other girls. Setsuna is also often seen in a lab coat, whether she is studying science or working in a science-industry job.

Personality: To the average stranger, more-likely-than-not someone who is disrupting time, Sailor Pluto is a formidable and deadly threat. She appears cold and unemotional, focused only on her task as guard. Her eyes betray her loneliness, spending so many ages separated from contact and love.

When Small Lady enters her life, that hardness begins to soften. She can be mothering, sweet, and comforting to children and those she cares for. She treats Small Lady like an adult, with respect and attentiveness, not with patronizing tones and "I know what's best for you" lectures. This is amusing if one considers that, with all Setsuna is privy to as Sailor Pluto, she probably does know what's best. When she comes to know the others, she watches Usagi and her friends with warmth in her eyes and a bemused smile on her lips. Caring for Hotaru with Haruka and Michiru, she takes on her role as "Setsuna-mama" with pleasure and diligence. She doesn't wear her heart on her sleeve, and anyone who didn't know her previously might still describe her as "cold". It is no longer true. Her heart is warmed by love.

The many years passed have taught Setsuna many lessons, even though she has been isolated. When one spends so much time in such a place, it breeds patience. She often opts for silence and observation. Watching the flow of Space-Time, Sailor Pluto knows that she should not interfere. Even if she can see that something terrible will happen, she should not attempt to prevent it. Some events need to play out with a combination of fate and chance—not everything can be good, peaceful, and just. She is not an idealist. Over time, she comes to believe in Usagi's rose-coloured desire to save everyone, when she witnesses the amazing strength of the girl's heart, but initially she differs on this. Setsuna usually thinks that some sacrifice is necessary and essential to protect as many as can be saved. Still, this has always weighed on her heart and conscience. She cannot celebrate it, only accept it.

Setsuna can often seem somewhat morose or dark. While she is not quite an uninvited guest the way that Sailor Saturn is, her appearance rarely heralds good tidings. If she chooses to leave her post, the danger is great. She takes her missions very seriously, for they deserve to be treated so. Her maturity and experience outshine that of the other sailor soldiers. She stays calm in most crisis situations. In general, Setsuna is ruled by her mind, not her heart. That said, her love for Small Lady (and later, Usagi as well) is great enough that their danger can sometimes be the one thing that throws her into panic. (Besides cockroaches, which she loathes! Vile, terrible, beasts!)

She feels very thankful to be able to interact with her comrades—this was once an unreachable dream, in the days when her solitude stretched through eternity. She could watch over them, but never stand by their sides. Now that she has greater freedom, she embraces it. When reborn in the 20th century, she studies theoretical physics and dreams of becoming a fashion designer.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills:
Setsuna guards Space-Time in her role as Sailor Pluto, and she is highly attuned to changes in Space-Time. She controls the Space-Time Door. She can sense when something is wrong. She has some knowledge of past and future events, although she is bound with how she uses this information by laws and rules.
The manga specifies in some notes that she is skilled at sewing, which relates to the mentioned fashion design dream.
 
History: Daughter of Chronos, the God of Time, Sailor Pluto has existed for millennia. Her role was intended to be a solitary one: guarding Space-Time and preventing anomalies. When she took up her post during the Silver Millennium, Queen Serenity explained that there were three taboos she must never break: she must not travel through time, she must not abandon her post, and must never cause time to stop. If she were to ever stop time, she would forfeit her life.

For a long time, Sailor Pluto diligently held this lonely post. In the 30th century, however, a pink-haired child stumbles into her domain and changes her life forever. Small Lady becomes a beacon of light in her dreary existence, giving her valuable companionship that she has never known. Her love for the future princess guides her towards a closer relationship with the other sailor soldiers.

Sailor Pluto meets Sailor Moon when she attempts to stop the sailor soldiers from traveling to the 30th century with Small Lady. Initially she attacks them, because they are intruders and breaking one of the rules. When Small Lady intervenes, Pluto allows them to pass. This provides an opportunity for her to get to know Sailor Moon and the others, which she continues to do in future battles. When she dies after using her power to stop time, it is the strength of the Silver Crystal that enables her to be reborn in the 20th century. When she is reborn, she retains her memories and fights alongside the others.

She is particularly close to Sailor Uranus and Neptune, as they are the three talisman holders. When Hotaru is reborn, Setsuna, Haruka, and Michiru raise her together in the 20th century. When Hotaru awakens again as Sailor Saturn, they support Sailor Moon as she faces other evils. Sailor Pluto is no longer isolated—she is truly part of a team.

Senshi Fuku: In her first form, Sailor Pluto wears a white bodysuit with a seam at the lower edge of the rib cage. It has no sleeves. Her sailor collar is jet black with no stripes, and her short pleated skirt is the same jet black. (In the manga and Crystal, she wears a belt of silver keys.) The skirt attaches to her bodysuit with a padded white waistband that dips into a slight v-shape. At the back of the waistband, near the small of her back, is a merlot red bow. On the front of her uniform, just below the lowest point of the sailor collar's neckline, is a merlot red bow with a round garnet red brooch at the center. Her choker is a simple jet black ribbon with a round garnet red jewel dangling from the center. She wears white gloves that reach her elbows, hemmed with three padded rolls of jet black fabric. Her footwear consists of jet black high-heeled knee-high boots with a pointed, angled cuff that is higher in front of the knee and lower at the back of the knee. The top edge is trimmed in white. A gold tiara curves across her forehead in a slight v-shape, with a garnet red gem at the center. Her earrings are large garnet red arrowhead-shaped shields.

In her "Crystal Power" form, Sailor Pluto's collar now has one white stripe. There is a gold star centered on her jet black choker. Her sleeves are now each comprised of two padded rolls of white fabric and a curved wing of sheer fabric with a very slight violet tint. The jet black brooch in the center of her front bow is heart-shaped, not circular. Her back bow is larger, with long tails that reach her thighs.

In her final manga form, Sailor Pluto wears a seamless white bodysuit. Her stormcloud gray sleeves are large, bubble-shaped, and translucent. They end high on her upper arm with two padded rolls of jet black fabric. Her white gloves are much longer than before, now reaching several inches above the elbow. Attached to the upper edge of the gloves are three padded rolls of jet black fabric. Her sailor collar is jet black, with a single white stripe adorning the edge. Her skirt is now two layers, and appears more ruffled than pleated. The top layer is jet black; the bottom layer is stormcloud gray. Where her skirt attaches to her white bodysuit there are two ribbons separated by a slight gap; they follow the same coloration pattern as her skirt—upper is jet black and lower is stormcloud gray. Where they meet at the central v-shaped point of the waistband, there is a small gold star insignia. At the back of her waistband is a stormcloud gray bow with short tails, but longer tails of the narrow jet black ribbon from the waistband dangle down to her knees. Her footwear is now knee-high, high-heeled white boots. The top edge of the boot dips down in a v-shape, edged with jet black trim. At the lowest point of the v-shape there is a small gold star charm. In the center of her chest, at the lowest point of the sailor collar's neckline, is a merlot red bow with a jet black star-shaped brooch in the center. Her choker follows the general design of her waistband and the trim at the top of her boots—it forms a slight v-shape with a narrow jet black ribbon, and at the lowest point of the v-shape is a small gold star charm. Her earrings are now small onyx circular studs with dangling crimson stars. Her gold tiara is narrower now and the v-shape is more defined than previous iterations. At the center of her forehead is a star-shaped onyx.

Communicator - A specific communicator is never seen, but Pluto was able to communicate with Small Lady through Luna-P, and she often responds to calls from other sailor soldiers.

She felt the arms wrap around her shoulders, the warm cheek pressed against her own, and her muscles relaxed, dropping the offensive stance. She wrapped the arm that didn't hold the Garnet Rod around the child, placing a palm on the girl's back. The warmth and weight of another body still surprised her, even now. In this realm, so many things lacked form and substance. Until the little princess wandered into her world, she had forgotten what it could be like. She never registered the heaviness of her staff, for it was an extension of her own arm.

Sailor Pluto may not have believed that Small Lady was real, if she hadn't felt that warmth.

When the little girl broke the embrace, leaning back and pushing against Pluto to look up into her eyes, the woman met her eyes. Sometimes she felt like she looked into a mirror, seeing eyes of a shade so similar to her own, and filled with so many questions. Sailor Pluto so often forgot her own years of childhood, trying to understand the world and her role in it. It was different for Small Lady. She had so much more available to her—so many options.

And yet, she chose to come here. When the girl entered her life for the first time, Pluto never would have expected the young one would return. But she did. Over, and over again. She came seeking someone to listen, to make the child feel like she existed.

In doing so, Sailor Pluto remembered that she, too, existed.

"What's wrong, Small Lady?" she asked, the soft voice patient and gentle. "Did something happen?"

She wished she could do more, be more for this sweet, sensitive child. But this was all she could provide. She could never leave her post here. Small Lady could enter her world, but Pluto could not enter Small Lady's.
