Appearance: Makoto is the tallest of the Princess's closest guards, standing at 168cm (5'6"). She is built solidly, like a tree, with wiry muscle. Due to her height, she struggles with presenting herself in a way typically associated with Japanese feminine ideals and often seems harsh or tough. Her eyes are a bright, sparkling emerald green.

Her wood-brown hair is curly enough that she has been reprimanded by her junior high school for going against their policy that disallows perms, but she insisted (and was not lying) that it is natural. In the manga, her hair has auburn tones. She sometimes picks up static electricity during a storm, or when she has a cold, and it can be sometimes seen adding extra lift to her hair. Her hair reaches to the middle of her back when it is left down, but her typical style is a high ponytail, sometimes tied with a green bauble. Her long, soft bangs are parted slightly on the left by a slight cowlick. She usually leaves two tendrils of hair out of her ponytail, falling in front of her ears.

For her junior high years, she transfers to Juuban Junior High School but, regrettably the school does not offer a uniform in her size. She wears the uniform from her previous school instead—a white top with a tawny brown sailor collar and two white stripes along the edge (In Crystal and the manga, there are three narrow white stripes), as well as white triangle patches where the sailor collar folds over. The top is lacked up the front and with the white laces tied in a small bow below the collar. The top has cuffs that coordinate with the sailor collar—tawny brown with two white stripes. She wears a tawny brown, pleated long skirt that reaches below her knees despite her height. There is a tawny brown bow tied at the back of her skirt, but the ties are thin. Her shoes are simple black flats, worn without socks or visible hosiery. In high school, she finally wears the same uniform as the other girls—white top, navy sailor collar with two red stripes, coordinating cuffs, navy blue bow on the front, and long navy blue skirt with bow at the back.

Regardless of her outfit, Makoto always wears small pink rose-shaped stud earrings. They are her signature. She sometimes wears floral perfume or simply smells of roses because she gardens as a hobby.

When not in school, Makoto wears trendy clothes much like her friends, but she wears pants more frequently than some of the other girls. She is very self-conscious about how masculine her height can make her seem, and sometimes she highlights this while other times she picks particularly "feminine" outfits as if to fight back against the comments others have made.

Personality: At first glance, many people are intimidated by Makoto. With her tall form, tough build, and brown hair, she strikes some as a stereotypical schoolgirl delinquent, ready to start some trouble. There are rumors that she was kicked out of a previous school for fighting, and others stay clear rather than risk their own reputations. With the hard way she looks at people, her lips pressed together in a firm line, it doesn't inspire anyone to overcome that and get to know her. She's grown used to protecting herself by keeping other people away. She doesn't need their help, after all. She can take care of herself—she's done it for years.

Makoto is very mature compared to other children her age. After her parents' death, she was orphaned, and she's relied on herself since then for the tasks of living that most schoolchildren take for granted. Makoto manages her own household, all of the cooking and cleaning, and she takes pride in a job well done. She wants to prove that she can make it on her own, so she perseveres to learn and master the skills necessary to do so. She is responsible and reliable, because there is no one to pick up the slack if she is not. In this way, she's also sometimes described as "motherly", as she does not shy from opportunities to care for others. It's almost relaxing to do so, because she's grown so accustomed to caring for herself.

The tall girl struggles with the way other people perceive her. They think she's hardened—a troublemaker. Due to her height, she doesn't really fit in. Boys don't think she's feminine because she's taller than most of them. Clothes shopping is difficult. Although she loves ladylike things, she has been told that girly things don't suit her. She doesn't want to look like a laughingstock, and it's difficult to assert herself against the ideas other people have already formed. She wants to be thought of as womanly and feminine, but she also values her strength and resilience. It hurts her that people don't think she can have both. She doesn't want to admit that she feels this way, because then others might use it to hurt her.

Emotionally, Makoto is capable of steeling her countenance and denying her feelings, as far as others can observe. Despite this, she is a romantic at heart. She loves gardening, tending to plants and watching them grow. She dreams of being a bride in a beautiful dress, married to a loving partner who appreciates the cooking and housework that she excels at. She hopes to fall in love so very deeply that her heart aches to be away from that person, even if it means she risks a relationship that ends. Makoto is willing to try and show affection to someone, although she hides her tears if her heart is broken. Trust is essential for her to show someone how much she takes to heart joys or sorrows. She is sensitive, so she tries to pretend that she isn't. Only those truly close to her would fail to be fooled.

When she does let someone in, Makoto is caring, warm, and affectionate. She likes to demonstrate her attachment by helping out in any way that she can. She might say that packing a lunch for her friends is "no big deal", but actually, it is. If they failed to enjoy it, she would be crushed. She put in so much effort so she can see them smile. She doesn't want to tell someone that she loves them, she wants to prove it. She constantly thinks about her parents, who died far too soon, and she knows that if she wastes time now and doesn't make the most of her life, she (or the people she loves) might too soon no longer be around to enjoy it.

Makoto doesn't mind showing off a more "tough" side, if the time calls for it. She doesn't shy from physical contact, and takes pride in her physical skills. She likes to think of herself as defending the weak and offering protection, rather than settling situations with a fight just to parade her own tail feathers. Whether she's providing the muscle as Sailor Jupiter or just Makoto, the brunette knows what she's capable of and isn't afraid to use it. Training also provides a great opportunity for Makoto to center her thoughts and consider her inner feelings. It offers a chance for meditation.

Anger is something Makoto struggles with, although not nearly to the point of unchecked violence that rumors attribute to her. She reacts strongly to injustice or rudeness, because that type of behaviour or action hurts her feelings so quickly and deeply. She thinks of the times she felt powerless and she wants to act with agency and intent. If she can use intimidation, she will, but if she has to prove that she has the guns to back up what she's implying, she'll do that, too. Thankfully, Usagi and the others are usually around to stop her from barreling through every obstacle with sheer force.

As she spends more time among her friends, she comes to cherish them and all the light they have brought to her previously-lonely life. She loves them fiercely and would do absolutely anything to protect them and keep them happy.

Makoto is attuned to lightning, static, and storms. She sometimes comments that she can "feel" the presence of the storm, almost as a form of precognition, although it is not nearly as strong or precise as Michiru or Rei's abilities.

In the 90s anime, it is noted that during the Silver Millennium, Sailor Jupiter could ice skate as well as Princess Serenity; Makoto can ice skate much better than Usagi or the others.

History: Orphaned at a young age when her mother and father died in a plane crash, Makoto was used to being on her own. She lived alone and took care of herself; she didn't need to rely on others. She struggled with making friends and feeling like she fit in, both due to her family situation and her height. When she transferred to a new school after having her heart broken by an upperclassman, that was when Usagi Tsukino came into her life. The blonde's cheerful nature and friendliness melted through the tough-girl barriers that Makoto had built. When targeted by the Dark Kingdom, she fights back first with her own strength, but then with her awakened abilities as Sailor Jupiter. Soon she found herself fighting alongside Usagi and the others, finally part of a team.

She stayed by Usagi's side, her friendship with both the blonde and the others deepening with each passing day, as they fought against many other forms of evil.

During the Silver Millennium, Sailor Jupiter was one of the sailor soldiers chosen to guard Princess Serenity. She became one of the girl's closest friends and companions, but ultimately she died trying to protect the Moon Kingdom, only to be reborn in 20th century Tokyo thanks to the power of the Silver Crystal.

In the future of Crystal Tokyo, Saior Jupiter stays with her friends when the once-bumbling crybaby ascends the throne as Neo Queen Serenity in the 30th century. She serves as the strength of their group, with her maturity and integrity providing not only delicious meals and heavy-lifting, but also reassurance and perseverance despite danger. She works towards her dream of opening a bakery and a flower shop, fulfilling her life not only as a sailor soldier. Her loyalty to Usagi, the first friend she really knew, will never falter.

Senshi Fuku: In her first form, Sailor Jupiter wears a white bodysuit with a seam at the lower edge of the rib cage. Her sleeves are three padded rolls of white fabric. Her sailor collar is shamrock green with two stripes, and her short pleated skirt is the same shamrock green. (In the manga and Crystal, this is three thin white stripes.) The skirt attaches to her bodysuit with a padded white waistband that dips into a slight v-shape. At the back of the waistband, near the small of her back, is a sugar pink bow. On the front of her uniform, just below the lowest point of the sailor collar's neckline, is a sugar pink bow with a round shamrock green brooch at the center. Her choker is a simple shamrock green ribbon. She wears white gloves that reach her elbows, hemmed with three padded rolls of shamrock green fabric. Her footwear consists of shamrock green ankle boots with a slight heel and white laces tied into a small bow. A gold tiara curves across her forehead in a slight v-shape, with a shamrock green gem at the center. She wears the same rose-shaped earrings she wears as a civilian. (In the live-action and manga, she wears a low-slung belt of sugar pink and gold beads with an attached clear orb of rose potpourri.)

In her "Crystal Power" form, Sailor Jupiter's collar now has one white stripe. There is a gold star centered on her shamrock green choker. Her sleeves are now each comprised of two padded rolls of white fabric and a curved wing of sheer fabric with a very slight violet tint. The shamrock green brooch in the center of her front bow is heart-shaped, not circular. Her back bow is larger, with long tails that reach her thighs.

In her final manga form, Sailor Jupiter wears a seamless white bodysuit. Her mint green sleeves are large, bubble-shaped, and translucent. They end high on her upper arm with two padded rolls of shamrock green fabric. Her white gloves are much longer than before, now reaching several inches above the elbow. Attached to the upper edge of the gloves are three padded rolls of shamrock green fabric. Her sailor collar is shamrock green, with a single white stripe adorning the edge. Her skirt is now two layers, and appears more ruffled than pleated. The top layer is shamrock green; the bottom layer is mint green. Where her skirt attaches to her white bodysuit there are two ribbons separated by a slight gap; they follow the same coloration pattern as her skirt—upper is shamrock green and lower is mint green. Where they meet at the central v-shaped point of the waistband, there is a small gold star insignia. At the back of her waistband is a mint green bow with short tails, but longer tails of the narrow shamrock green ribbon from the waistband dangle down to her knees. Her footwear is now knee-high, high-heeled white boots. The top edge of the boot dips down in a v-shape, edged with shamrock green trim. At the lowest point of the v-shape there is a small gold star charm. In the center of her chest, at the lowest point of the sailor collar's neckline, is a sugar pink bow with a shamrock green star-shaped brooch in the center. Her choker follows the general design of her waistband and the trim at the top of her boots—it forms a slight v-shape with a narrow shamrock green ribbon, and at the lowest point of the v-shape is a small gold star charm. Her earrings are now small emerald circular studs with dangling teal stars. Her gold tiara is narrower now and the v-shape is more defined than previous iterations. At the center of her forehead is a star-shaped emerald.

RP Sample: Makoto tucked a curl of hair behind her ear again, but the wind tugged it free almost as soon as she completed the motion. She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply, smelling the storm on the breeze. It reminded her vaguely of the scent when a candle had just been extinguished—the electricity gathering in the air almost like smoke. She wasn't sure what was going on, but she knew that change was coming. It was just something she could feel.

The teenager leaned back, pushing away from her balcony, and stepped back into the warm glow of the apartment. It was small—no, she told herself, cozy was the right word—but it was hers. Already it felt a bit more like home. Scrubbed clean from top to bottom, then accented with all the right touches. Plants clustered near the window, where they'd get just the right amount of light. A crocheted doily or two on surfaces or the backs of chairs, adding the warmth of fiber against the smooth wood of the furniture. The kitchen neatly organized, now with every spice exactly in the right easy-to-reach place. A pot of curry boiled on the stove—she'd have dinner set all week.

Hmm, dinner was taken care of... but what about lunch?

Makoto tapped a finger against her chin, giving the curry one more taste and deeming it acceptable. Well, obviously rice for the bento. Maybe fried shrimp? She had purchased a few prawns on sale from the grocery store around the corner. In another week she thought she'd have their discount timing perfectly understood. Maybe pickles for a side dish, or spinach? She tried to imagine the finished lunch box, even adding a few decorations to it while it hovered in her thoughts.

"Hey, didn't she get kicked out of her old school?" She turned, but she couldn't catch a better glimpse of the boy, although she recognized the uniform: Juuban Junior High School, her new destination. "Yeah, for fighting! I bet she won't last another month here!" They laughed, carrying on with the joke, jovial at the thought of excitement. Around the corner, Makoto felt that familiar copper taste in her mouth, although she knew she wasn't bleeding. This wasn't a physical pain.

It still hurt.

She shook her head, trying to forget what had happened earlier. Even so, she felt her heartbeat quicken with anger, and her hand clenched into a fist almost involuntarily. They didn't know anything about her. How dare they say such things? Why hadn't she said something? Why hadn't she fought back? The brunette sighed, the hand suddenly falling open, loose. Then she'd fit right into the picture they already imagined. Fighting was absolutely not the reason she had changed schools, but that's what people wanted to believe. She didn't want to give them what they wanted. She wanted to be stronger than that.

When she turned her head, she saw the frame that held that one precious photo: a family of three, showing mother, father, and a little girl with her brown hair in a ponytail. They all looked so happy, didn't they, in that one sweet moment?

For them. For herself. She had to do better than what people expected from her.

Makoto turned and started rummaging through the back of the refrigerator, humming to herself. Distractions, distractions—time to keep cooking! Maybe she'd make takoyaki and give them little panda bits made of dried seaweed sheets. Or octopus-shaped cocktail wieners. It was hard to not smile at the face of cute food looking up from your lunch box!
