So, I guess all of those who read the manga remember: The Sailor Senshi can use magical bubbles to levitate. They first appeared when the group went to fight Kunzite on the Tokyo Tower.
(In this page, it seems like Mako was the one driving the whole thing.)
Here, Minako and Mako apparently split their "bubble" from Rei and Ami to protect Usagi. And later in the serie, they use them to go to space:

In space, twice actually. and this second time, it seemed like Usagi could use it on her own.

And later in the serie, in the Infinity arc, the senshis are using them again. Once against Cyprince, and once against Mistress 9 / Pharaoh 90.


And it seems like the bubble disapear if the senshi using it are out of energy.


So, what are your opinions on those bubbles? How do they work? Why can't the Senshis use them more often if they can fly freely? How fast can those things go, anyway?

Oh wow, I actually don't think I've ever seen this talked about, I know they only use it like, once?, in the anime. (In the first season when they go to the moon also).


I don't really think it's actually meant to be a shield? The panel where Jupiter and Venus jump in front of Serenity, in my opinion isn't meant to be a bubble or shield, just meant to portray "light" being shot at them in the darkness of the night.

I think the other bubbles we see are really only meant for floating up high, and to provide magic air to breath in while up in those situations.

Either way, it makes sense to be tied to their own powers.

Like NQS said, i think those bubbles are for special ocations, not to protect or to be a shield, it's just to float. i also think those are connected with their powers. it's like gigantic ball of energy from their "chakra".

There was a "bubble" in the R movie too, when they teleported out to Fiore's asteroid.

I don't know if it functions so well as a shield, as it does just serve the purpose of being the magical-floating-power-visuals-and-also-I'm-Batman-and-I-can-breathe-in-space.

It must travel faster than humans though, since Usagi RAN into space with Kunzite following her. How many miles is that???

I've always thought of some of these bubbles as the "Sailor Teleport" power, or the light coming from the characters' energies. But I think a lot of other times, they're used as a stylistic choice to distinguish the characters from the background.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say that they're only used when it fits in with the plot. I mean if they just used bubbles whenever they needed them, it would have cut the plot in half. So I guess they just use bubbles when it makes a good plot :p

I think they may also be requiring great ammount of energy to be "summoned". Seeing how none of the girls used one on their own.
