Appearance: Hotaru stands at 147 cm or 4’10”. She has short, shoulder-length straight dark purple hair, violet eyes, and pale skin. She is most often seen wearing black, specifically a black turtleneck sweater, grey skirt, and black stockings. Her school uniform is the Mugen academy uniform; a maroon blouse, green plaid skirt, and blue pantyhose.

Mistress Nine: As Mistress Nine, Hotaru gains an adult female body. Her hair and eyes are still the same color, but now the hair is long enough to reach her legs. She typically wears a dress that consists of a blue top and black skirt (anime) or white skirt (manga). Her top is decorated with white beads on the sleeves part. She also has a black star sign on her forehead.

Personality: Hotaru started off as a sheltered, sickly child who did not have any friends. She was always lonely and even felt her father was pulling away from her since the laboratory incident that killed her mother. Her friends thought she was weird because of her medical problems, and the fact that she was a cyborg didn’t really help her socialize either. Hotaru only started opening up more when she met Chibiusa and learned what it was like to have a true friend. She became happier as a whole, especially when Usagi and her friends also accepted her.

As Saturn, Hotaru had always felt, in her own words, like the guest nobody invited. She understood that her role to end the world when all was lost was not pleasant, and when Sailor Moon gave up everything in order to save her, it was something that meant a lot to her because no one in her life had ever thought her to be that important. Especially when most people thought she ought to be killed before she awakened.

After she was reborn and fully became one with Saturn, Hotaru appeared to be more wholesome, perhaps because this time she also had a real family in Michiru, Haruka, and Setsuna. Hotaru proved to be a precocious child and learned things very quickly as she grew up all over again. But Hotaru was also still aware of her duty, and she was always prepared to die for it, as proven in the anime’s Nehelenia encounter during the Stars arc, where she declared she didn’t mind dying if that was what it took to kill Nehelenia.

Hotaru wishes to be a nurse someday, a desire that probably stemmed from her own sickly condition as a child and wanting to make it better for everyone else so they didn’t have to go through the same thing she did. She also loved reading and had a habit of collecting lamps in her room.

In the manga Hotaru is shown to have a bit of a possessive side with Chibiusa and is shown to be jealous of Chibiusa’s new friends Naruru and Ruruna.

Hotaru is usually very polite towards everyone.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills: Hotaru is skilled in piano playing, thanks to Michiru’s tutoring. She also appears able to absorb information and learn things in a rapid manner along with her accelerated growth. She also has minor healing abilities that could allow her to heal scrapes and minor wounds. In the anime she could sometimes also creates force fields or energy beams when threatened in civilian form, though this ability only manifested during the S arc.
 
History: In the Silver Millennium, Saturn was a soldier who remained in slumber, whose only job was to awaken when all the world was lost so that she could destroy it and let it be reborn anew. When the Silver Millennium fell, the three talismans possessed by Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto came together and summoned Saturn. She then brought down her glaive and ended that era.

In present day, Saturn was born as Hotaru Tomoe, the daughter of Professor Souichi Tomoe, a scientist. When she was little, there was an accident that occurred in her father’s labs that set it on fire. Her mother perished in the accident and she was fatally wounded. In the manga, in order to save her, Prof. Tomoe replaced parts of her limbs with machinery, turning her into a cyborg. She was also possessed by Mistress Nine, though she didn’t become fully awakened until later.

Despite her father’s efforts, Hotaru continually suffered from seizures and could not do too much physical activity. As a result she became estranged from her friends and was quite lonely. She was seen as the strange girl because of her healing ability. After meeting Chibiusa, Hotaru became much happier, though soon the rest of the outer senshi warned that she was the Messiah of Silence that ought to be killed before she fully awakened and destroyed the world. They knew her identity as Saturn because they were there when Saturn first brought down her glaive to end the Silver Millennium era.

Hotaru did awaken, but as Mistress Nine first, surprising everyone. She attempted to open the gate for Pharaoh 90 to come into earth. However, Hotaru’s will managed to break free and she awakened properly as Saturn. In the manga she did bring down her glaive again to destroy Pharaoh 90, but Sailor Moon was able to resurrect everyone with her powers. Pluto then sealed the gateway to the aliens’ dimension so that they could never return. In the anime she sacrificed herself to kill Pharaoh 90, and Sailor Moon was the one who managed to save her as a reborn baby.

In both versions Hotaru became reborn and got adopted by Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto, who had initially tried to kill her. They became a family and lived together happily for a time. Hotaru grew rapidly and soon reached her original age again, especially when the new threat in the form of Nehelenia appeared. She then finally started fighting properly with the other senshi, as a comrade, not a threat that was only awakened when the world needed to end.

It was implied that in Crystal Tokyo, Saturn would be part of Chibi Moon’s team along with the Sailor Quartet.

Senshi Fuku: Sailor Saturn’s main color is purple. Her collar (which has no stripes at all), choker, skirt, and glove’s pads are purple. Her back and front bow are dark red/brown (more reddish purple in the anime). Her tiara has a purple gem. In the manga the topmost pad of her gloves are longer and pointy shaped. She wears purple knee-length high-heeled boots with criss-crossing laces. Her earrings are purple and Saturn-shaped with thin diamond-shaped gems dangling below them. On her choker there's something resembling the shape of a pure heart crystal in white. This is also the shape of her brooch. Her sleeves are shaped almost like flower petals.

After being upgraded to Super Sailor Saturn, her choker now has a yellow star, her brooch becomes heart-shaped, the bottom of her shoulder pad becomes transparent, and her back bow becomes longer and bigger.

Her last upgrade as Eternal Sailor Saturn gives her a V-shaped choker, her brooch becomes star-shaped, and so does her tiara. Now she has one white stripe on her collar. Her skirt becomes two layered, the lower part is light purple. Her shoulder pads become round light purple puffs with purple stripes below them. Her gloves are now longer, reaching past her elbows. She has two ribbons - purple and light purple - as belts around her waist which meet in the middle and clasped with a yellow star. She now wears white knee length boots with a yellow star on the purple V-shaped stripe at the top. Her earrings become star-shaped.

It was a bit weird living with people who once tried to kill you.

Hotaru thought about this, sometimes. She hadn’t forgotten it. She’d forgiven them… but it was impossible to forget. It didn’t bother her, exactly. It was just something she liked to think back to from time to time.

She didn’t even blame them. She knew why they did what they did and where they came from. To have witnessed the world’s end once was enough. No one wanted to see that a second time.

The thing was, with Saturn, a lot of it felt like something she couldn’t control.

Destiny. That was one word that Hotaru liked the least in the vocabulary, because it was the one word that weighed the heaviest on her. For most of her life, all her choices were made for her. People tried to use her, tried to kill her, and all they saw was what she could do for them, be it good or bad.

No one had seen her as a person until Chibiusa.

But now she had a family. A family who finally loved her the way she deserved to be loved. And if Sailor Moon, the one person she admired most in the world, could forgive even her worst enemy who had killed everyone she cared about, then the least Hotaru could do was forgive her new parents.
