I have never made an Otaku Senshi before, but I would like to design one.

I would like some of your opinions. What has been overdone, what you
like and dislike about otaku senshis. What should I stay away from?

I am an artist, so after I gather some information and start to
brainstorm ideas, I will come up with a final design that I will
show everyone. :3

Actually, I don't think there's anything to stop you from using senshi "archetypes". One senshi that I've been working on, off and on, for the past five months is sort of a cliche-test [to see how well I could do the archetype] that has evolved several times over. As long as you make it original, and perhaps give it an unusual name (for example, the aforementioned character is Sailor Sidus - a latin spin on "star"), there is nothing wrong with it. ^^

Well, that's not a bad start. You know what you want to do, at least. Have you decided anything else about the senshi in question yet?

I dunno how other people feel about this, but I like reasons for everything. If your senshi is a sack of emo, why is she a sack of emo? If her fuku is hugely different than the other Sol senshi, why is it hugely different? (Does she come from another planet? Is she even human?) Making sure you answer those sorts of questions also help avoid stereotypes in some cases.

Giving your senshi a purpose helps too and also goes in line with my "why" thinking. Why does your senshi do what she does? Does she play nicely with others or is she on her own mission that does not require the help of the Sol senshi? Why is the bad guy in her life a bad guy, what does that person want to do and why?

Make sure her attacks have side effects, too. Death can be really cliche really fast because it involves, well, killing things. If your character can do massive damage, then it would be nice if she suffered something in return. For example, I have a senshi who reigns over the living and she can heal others' injuries and resurrect recently dead, but in healing she takes those injuries from her target and they're applied to herself, and if she resurrects someone, her life is forfeit. So those are pretty wicked abilities, but they are very costly to use. It can even be something as simple as only being able to use a particularly potent attack in a certain time period because it just wipes your character out and she needs a nap/redbull/FIVE HOUR ENERGYYYY before she can use it again.

There are other weapons that could represent death, though, Tofu. Why not do some research, see if something else strikes your fancy? The more unique the character, the more memorable she is, even if you're using the archetype as square one.

If you want to know whats been over done then here are a few: Sailor Earth, Sailor Sun, etc. Not that you can't do them, you just have to be very original with it.

Yeah, he sorta is, but people like to throw out what ifs and make a legit female Sailor Earth. I've seen Naru/Molly made into Sailor Earth (the art was good and cute so i didn't mind at all) and other random excuses for a Sailor Earth. I've seen some choose Galaxia to transform into Sailor Sun and that usually just makes me go "Whaaaa???"

Naru is a special character, I think she should have had more story.

I would recommend looking through this listing to see if anything strikes your fancy, actually. Since the scythe is a bladed weapon, I included the entire scope. ^^

When creating an otaku senshi, while it's important to layout her positives/strengths, it's just equally as important to layout her negatives/weaknesses (likes/dislikes, power weaknesses, etc...). This makes the character easier to relate to the reader and also tends to stay away from the "Mary Sue" element that everyone now-a-days likes to throw up like a wild card.

For example, if you have a "fire" base character, then her weakness should be things that are "water" based.

I also find it helpful if go into depth more in certain areas than just putting a one-word answer. For example, if your character likes to dance then why does she like to dance? Adding that simple why or going into a little more depth helps again to make the reader relate more to the character than "She likes to read."

Anyways, hope this is helpful ^^

I suggest thinking about what senshi your otaku senshi may work with. inner, outers, starlights maybe? would they be a foe? Thats how I started mine they are kind of a ally/foe hybrid.

For her outfit, you could do a black gothic sailor dress, with the skirt ending around her ankle.
Or it could be her outfit she normally wears in her civilian form (:
