I’m surprised no one (or at least, not many people?) has made a fanwork in which one of the Tsukino girls actually get turned into a rabbit via magic. I thought it was a joke too good to miss…so I made this. XD;;

Now for some background info, Inari is one of many deities, or “kami” in Japanese, in the Shinto pantheon, and is traditionally associated with rice and foxes (foxes hunt the mice that eat the rice), but is also worshiped as a deity who helps bring success. When I was in Japan last year my friends and I went to the Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto, and that visit inspired this story. As for why a fox guardian like Akanoha can “grant” Chibi-Usa’s wish, in Shintoism foxes are messengers of Inari, and sometimes Inari themselves are represented as a fox (Inari also doesn’t seem to have a fixed gender, and has been depicted as male or female, as well as in animal forms), so I presume they also have some power to grant wishes to worshipers if it's within their power. Foxes are known for being tricksters in East Asian folklore, and they are adept at disguising themselves as humans. As for why Chibs uses “Oinari” in her prayer, that’s because in Japanese the “O” prefix before a name/title denotes respect for someone, so it’s a very polite way of addressing a deity.

The perils of being a white rabbit in the wild when there's no snow around is no joke! My grad school campus had quite a few rabbits roaming free, some of which were white. No one really knew where they came from, but one theory was that someone, at some point, released some pet rabbits on campus and they...well, multiplied like rabbits. But after a family of bobcats moved in, the rabbit population diminished very quickly, and I never saw a white bunny on campus again. 

At least in Chib's case she was lucky to run into Shou before anything could eat her.

I had a lot of fun coming up with names for the high end brands Akanoha bought with Chib’s credit card. Of course I had to include “Guccicci” and “Channel”, but I contributed my own brands in the form of “Lewis Martin” and “Carter” though the last two letters got cut off during the cropping process. XD The “Kimitan” is a nod to Isetan, a Japanese department store chain which has done a number of Sailor Moon merchandise collaborations in the past few years.

Re: kitsune udon, it’s a warm noodle dish with udon noodles in a broth and a square of sweet, fried bean curd. According to Japanese folklore this dish, or in some cases the fried bean curd itself, is the favorite food of fox demons like Akanoha.

I'm really enjoying this side story - I keep giggling.  Also, I am now enjoying the image of Shou trying to figure out how to feed a remarkably picky rabbit without any certainty as to what rabbits like to eat or the fact that he is not in fact trying to feed a rabbit.

I'm surprized you made another couple of pages before your move mangaka. Still you're doing great with this project. I'm happy to wait, you just worry about settling down in your new home. :3

Honestly, I'm a bit surprised by my progress too. But I've learned that drawing and art in general helps me de-stress, and in this particular instance reminds me give me a brief respite from shoving the possessions I've accumulated over the last decade into boxes. XD;; So if I have some time to draw a little, I figured I might as well take it and brighten my mood a little.

It’s been a bit crazy these last few weeks, with moving back home and starting my new job, but things have been moving along well so far and I managed to have a little time to draw.

Shou’s dislike for lettuce is of course purely my own conjecture. We know so little about Helios’ personality and history that as a fan writer I essentially have to make up bits of his quirks as a person. And as a mild self-insert, the reason why Shou is not a fan of lettuce is because I personally dislike lettuce, especially the iceberg variety. It’s tasteless and all you really get out of it is water and some fiber. :p

In Japanese folk tale kitsune, or fox demons, can be perceived by their shadow, which retains their true form even when they have a human appearance. Some times it’s people who are perceptive that see through a kitsune’s disguise, and other times it’s people with strong spiritual powers. In this case Pallas is the most observant and perceptive of the group (she is named after Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom after all), while Saturn has a high level of spiritual awareness, ranked only behind Mars and Neptune. But even so a kitsune’s disguise is nothing to scuff at, and outside of those highly perceptive people they can easily fool just about everybody else.

I love this part of the story, I need to make the time to read the first manga properly but I like little details that express backstory and emotions a lot. This was a great piece mangaka. :3

The tails of a nine-tailed demon fox are supposedly difficult for said fox to hide, even if their disguise is otherwise flawless. So if they’re flustered or panicked their tails tend to appear as a sign of their distress.

As for Vesta and Juno’s threat, while I feel like the Quartet aren’t proud of what they did under Nehellenia’s control, I also don’t think they’d be above threatening to put their circus skills to use when the situation warrants a little…persuasion.

Foxes, as messengers and emissaries of the god Inari, are said to come in pairs. That’s why in Japan Inari temples have two fox statutes at the entrance, one at each side. Nine-tail foxes are especially powerful, and have powers such as infinite sight and hearing in addition to their shape shifting ability.

In this case both Akanoha and Kinoha are nine-tailed fox messengers and guardians of Inari’s temple. Just like Akanoha’s name means “red leaves”, Kinoha means “yellow leaves”, and their symbols are fallen autumn leaves of those respective colors.

So who didn’t see this coming?

Hehe, I figured. XD But that’s okay, I had fun drawing these few pages. To be honest, these were some of the first scenes that popped into my head when I started creating the side story, so it’s nice to be able to finally get to this point in the story.

The “Houshi no Tama” mentioned by Akanoha is a jewel said to hold the power and/or soul of a nine-tail fox, and is thus very precious to the fox. There are folk tales of people taking possession of a kitsune’s Houshi no Tama and the kitsune, in order to get it back, is willing to grant the human a wish or protection from danger. Here, Akanoha is willing to part with a teeny-tiny piece of her jewel in order to replay Chibs for being unwittingly pranked.

Chibi-Usa’s date outfit is based on the 2015 collaboration between Sailor Moon and Samantha Vega/Honey Bunch. I spent a whole afternoon looking for cute date outfit when Google threw this collab my way, and it was perfect probably not surprising though, heh.

In my head-canon for this universe I imagine Shou would buy all of his own clothes, because Asako and Yuuko are like the aunties who always gifts you the ugliest sweaters at Christmas, not because they’re trying to be ironic, but because they honest to goodness thinks it’s cute and will look great on you. Also, the girls have a penchant for buying stuff in bulk when it’s on sale. It’s a good house-keeping principle, but they (like some of my own relatives) tends to take that a little too far at times…

And with that, Future Reunion draws to a close. Thank you to everyone who’s supported me through this endeavor over the past couple of years. I definitely am still pondering on the sequel idea, but there’s still a lot of holes in its plot that will need to be filled. I also have a Helios-centric side story, which may or may not tie into the Future Reunion universe, being punted around inside my head. We’ll see which I end up working on, if any, since I can’t make any promises any of them will come to fruition. But hey, one can always hope, right? ;D
