To inject a little bit of levity into the update, I was taking to my best friend the other day while I was drawing and when she asked me what I was up to, I told her I was drawing a dying bishi. Somehow she heard it as “a dying fishie” and wondered why on Earth I was drawing a dying fish. Cue uncontrolled laughter for the next five minutes.

For sharp-eyed readers, the images of Lady are from Act 6, when she dreamed about seeing Helios in his final moments. The reason why Helios can see her apparition is because while Lady was having that dream she was holding the Crystal Carillon in her hand, and that as we know, is a conduit between her and Helios.

I've been so busy lately that I've only had a chance to lurk and read your updates but...you're Helios and Maenads headcanon is just...I would've never thought of it that way at all and I totally love it! It really works well with the mythology and setting up the maenads cause of their hair style (i always thought their double buns were suspicious and somehow had ties to the moon). Now I'm eager to see just what exactly is up with the villain, who she is and her motives!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the villain finally has a name!

Psyche is named after 16 Psyche, the 16th asteroid discovered by astronomers. For those not familiar with Greek mythology, Psyche is also the goddess who represents the soul, whose symbol is the butterfly. I decided to go with a moth as a motif for Psyche because Sailor Cocoon already use the butterfly as her trademark in the Sailor Moon canon, and moths evoke eeriness and ghostliness in contrast to the butterfly’s flamboyance and brightness.

Her backstory is inspired by something Taiki said in the Stars arc, that in the process of forming a planetary system, many stars and planets die. If we assume sailor star seeds become linked with their home world after leaving the Galaxy Cauldron, then if the planet fails to form into a proper planet then the sailor star seed also die. Asteroids in general fit with this idea in that they are the remnants of early planets that failed to form and/or the debris of collisions that tore proto-planets apart. 16 Psyche is hypothesized to be the leftover metal core of a proto-planet, and that part of its history factored into Psyche’s history here, in Future Reunion.

I'm back! (Was away on vacay for two weeks, so I didn't update for a while)

One of the motifs commonly associated with Psyche in mythology is the butterfly, which symbolizes the soul. Moths to a lesser extent also represent the soul, but they have a more eerie, morbid connotation (e.g. “ghost moth”) compared to their flashier cousins. In the case of Psyche the character in FR, the wings she got thanks to Lady are inspired by the luna moth, Actias luna, a species found in eastern North America.

And that’s it, everyone! Four years, nine months, and 23 days after I posted the first page of Future Reunion online, it is finally complete! Part of me wants to do a little dance with jazz hands, while the other part of me wants to lay down and give my back a break. XD;; It’s been a super fun journey, and I’ve had the pleasure of pouring some long held ideas onto paper. Thank you for joining me on this trip; it would’ve been a hell of a lot harder to do this without everyone’s support!

But! If all goes well, this is not the end. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I am planning at least one side story to FR and would like to do a sequel once I have my plot ducklings in a row. The side story I’m working on now is based on the Chibi-Usa Picture Diaries from the original manga. Without revealing too much, I will tell you the title of the side story is “Shou’s Birthday Surprise”. I think based on that name alone you can probably guess there’s gonna be some serious shenanigans going down.

I wasn’t really expecting myself to work quite this quickly, to the point where I busted out three pages of art in, what? 24 hours? |||OTL Suffice to say, my hand and back are protesting a bit right now, but I just really wanted to get started on the side story before the New Years holiday ends, so that’s what I did darn Muse is such a slave driver…

There’s a few little nuggets in these pages that people may pick up on. The “rice cooker” Asako is interested in, with its many functions, calls to mind a certain popular kitchen appliance cough*InstantPot*cough. I also renamed the “Fruit Parlor Crown” as “Fruits Juice Bar Crown”, cus, you know, after a thousand years you have to change up your business model a little to be with the times just don’t ask me about Motoki and Unazuki; my brain did not delve that deep into it. XD;;;

One final note, I don’t actually know if supermarkets in Japan does lotteries or sweepstakes. When I was in Japan I didn’t see any, but I vaguely remember seeing one of those roll a numbered ball out of a box thing in the old 90′s anime, and I think it was Ikuko-mama or Usagi trying their hand at a lottery at a market or shop of some sort. The memory is really vague, but I ended up acting on it and built the plot around it. I know Japan has some pretty strict gambling laws (hence, pachinko parlors) so I don’t even know if my little “lottery prize” here can happen in real-life. But since we’re dealing with a magical girl story, I think a little suspension of disbelief with regards to that is doable. ^^;;

P.S. Forgot to mention, but if you closely on Yuuko’s phone the name of the supermarket where the twins bought their lottery ticket from is “Meidou”, and is a play on the name of the upscale supermarket Meidi-Ya. I just couldn’t resist. XD;;;

And yes, those are luna moths that you see, not butterflies. The number of moths is intentional, with four for the quartet, one for Saturn, one for Helios, and of course, one for Psyche. As for why I chose to draw Lady in her White Moon princess dress, mostly because I got inspired by the cover of the volume 12 Kodansha manga, and I just like the idea of her in this dress, haha. ^^

Since you write comics, do you write Chibiusa/Helios fics? I adore them, though there’s not a lot of fic out there about them.

I do. I have a multi-chapter story called "Return to the Past" and its associated sequels that I started more then ten years ago, but that series is now on indefinite hiatus as I've lost the plot. :\ I've also written one or two one-shots, but Future Reunion is so far my biggest and most complete project with regards to this ship.
