Well.. here's a question I've had for a while now. In the beginning of the senshi's transformations, they begin transforming by their nails being painted the color of their uniform. They wear gloves so who is gonna see their nails? Why is it there? Is it symbolic of something? Just wondering (:

Here's an idea and it's debatable. It's kind of stupid honestly but.. the nail polish is kind of symbolic of the fact that even though they're changing what they wear and what they are, it can never change them as a person. They stay true to who they are and fight for love and justice This applies to the nail polish because even though you are changing the color of your nails they're still your nails. Like a costume, nail polish eventually comes off and reveals your true form.

Wow, I never noticed that. The nail polish sequences always look so flashy, too.

Personally for me it never made any sense. I just acknowledged it as the writers trying to reach out to young girls and play the fashion card. It's really strange because nail polish is never a part of their daily lives either. Why in the world would they include that in the transformation sequences?

As silly as the lipstick is, at least it makes some kind of sense for the Outer Senshi (not that you actually see them wearing lipstick once their transformation is done. ) But... yah.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I've heard it from all over the place that the nail polish is where they get all of their powers from, and the gloves protect the polish from getting scratched off and all that not so good stuff.

It's probably not true, but I always thought that was a cool way of looking at it
(Which, has anyone else heard of this? I'd love to know)


As Jupiter also said, I do agree that it never made any sense as to why they would use nail polish just to have it covered up :p

every time they transform they get a manicure...and of course you don't want it to be all scratched up and stuff by the bad guys.



honestly, I have no idea. I never even thought about it til now.

The same reason macho ninja in Naruto wear it- nail polish strengthens nails and prevents them from getting ripped off in battle. Lots of (straight!) male music majors wear clear nail polish to protect their nails from the wear and tear of piano keys and guitar strings, too. If you're doing something potentially nail-harming, it pays to have a protective barrier- and since their nailpolish appears to be magical/from the moon, it's probably more protective than even normal nailpolish.

Or it could just be for the sparkles and looks- it's a little girls' series, after all.

This, and I think it could be a means of channeling their powers. Their hands direct their elemental attacks, so the polish could act as a conductor for the power.

I never really thought of that, I guess it just seemed normal to me because it represents the senshi's color and of course, I'm wondering, if their finger nails are polished probably are toe nails polished too, but they don't show it up What do you guys think about that?

Well, I think the moment would be broken if they showed the senshi's feet. Lol ^.^

A part of this might be true. I read this from the Materials collection and found it really interesting. Here are some examples :













Naoko never says it straightly but what she writes totally gives me the feeling that their nail polish is a part of their powers and that it helps them to summon specific powers. I don't see any reason why she would put those explanations of Mercury 'creating fog', Mars 'firing laser beams' and Jupiter 'handling nature' under her notes of the nail polish if she didn't mean to emphasis that the nail polish is part of their power summoning. These were just examples and I'm sure that this 'nail polish' thingy would be the same with the rest of the senshi, as well. This is just a theory though, so please tell me how you think about this ^___^!

One time I read on tumblr some fancanon I think that said like the nail polish was like representative of their political stance or rank. I wanna see if I can find it again so I can post it here.
