| I had heard about this series before and knew it was a modern fairy tale retelling of some sort, but then I heard the word 'cyborg' and 'sci-fi' and 'space wars' and decided to steer clear of it because sci-fi is not my thing. However, I then learned that Marissa Meyer, the author, is a long-time Sailor Moon fanfic writer.
Naturally, that alone intrigued me. Plus, fairy tale retelling.
I decided to get the books and started reading the first one, Cinder. Here's a synopsis from Goodreads:
"Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.
Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future."
Doesn't sound Sailor Moon-ish at all, right?
WRONG.
I see Sailor Moon references all over the place. There are Lunar people, and okay, they're not very nice, but PEOPLE OF THE MOON. Also one of the characters is called Princess Selene (okay, she's princess of the moon, Selene = moon goddess, but STILL, the author loves Sailor Moon, you know it's deliberate).
And when I started putting the pieces of the mystery together, I realized it is BASICALLY SAILOR MOON'S CORE STORY.
Which part I won't say because it will spoil it for you and I want that wonder and amazement and excitement for you so I shall restrain myself. But you will figure it out and it will be glorious.
TL;DR: SAILOR MOON. SLASH FAIRY TALE RETELLING. ALSO SCI-FI IF THAT'S YOUR THING.
Read the book. |

| It's available in print as well. I don't like ebooks either (I'm a book snob lol xD) so yeah. They're kind of thick though. I'm on book 3 right now and I can't stop reading it as well as the additional short stories. If you wanna find out what the writing style/story is like you can read one of the free short stories here: The Little Android (based on The Little Mermaid). I bawled my eyes out. - Miss Moon Rose wrote:

I haven't! I'll have to check it out. She has so many stories and I'm not sure where to start from! |

| I hope you're enjoying it! I was looking at her FAQ page and got really amused by this (she's a live action fan!!)
Why did you choose to set Cinder in futuristic Asia? The easy answer: it just popped into my head that way. It probably had something to do with my first inspiration for Cinder’s character being Japanese actress Mew Azama, who played Sailor Jupiter in the live-action Sailor Moon show.
That said, it’s actually quite fitting, as some scholars believe that the earliest Cinderella tale came from 9th-century China. Additionally, some believe that the iconic glass slipper (which was gold in the original Grimm version) came to us from China’s tradition of foot-binding and a culture in which women were praised for tiny feet. So having Cinder set in China kind of has a symbolic, cyclical quality to it.
(But really… it was mostly because of Sailor Jupiter.) |

| I finished Cinder yesterday, and WOW. It was definitely one of the best books I've read in a very long time. I enjoyed the plot, the characters, the world-building, the romance, EVERYTHING. I have been in love with Marissa Meyer's writing since she was a fanfiction author on FFN, and I have been so excited to read this book and am glad I finally got the chance. One thing that never fails to surprise me with Meyer's work is that she isn't the type of author to sugarcoat things and make everything happy in the end. As I read the book, I found myself shocked at all of the twists and tragedies. - Spoilers:
Peony getting the plague was a horrible twist that had me shocked. I had it implanted in my head that Peony would be okay and there would be a cure, and that thought became stronger as the plot continued and Queen Levana even gave Kai the antidote. When Peony died, I was so shocked that I had to stop reading for a while. I loved her character and I was so happy that she would be cured, but when it all came tumbling down I was taken completely by surprise. Additionally, I was so shocked and hurt that Iko was destroyed. From the beginning, Iko was a lovable character who gave the impression that she would be around for a long time. I had no idea that Adri would destroy Iko, and I was heartbroken when I found out.
The only flaw I would say I could spot in this book was how predictable the princess's identity was. I had a feeling from the very start that Cinder was Selene. But I will admit, there were moments in the story where I was fooled into thinking she wasn't Selene (the discussion regarding Selene's body being found in the ashes, the holographic girl at the end), but in the end I always knew. However, there were lots of factors regarding Erland that I was surprised by (the draft, his Lunar status, etc.).
I felt so dumb towards the end because all along I had made the Sailor Moon connections to the book, but the one GIANT connection I missed made me feel like an idiot.
Kai's the Earth Prince. Cinder is the Moon Princess. They fall in love. Duhhhhhhhh. *facepalm*
Anyway, this book was overall a fantastic read and I cannot wait to move on to Scarlet! |

| I finished Scarlet yesterday and I JUST WANT CRESS SO BAD UGHHHHH. - Spoilers:
I cannot get enough of the fairy tale references, the twists, and Marissa's phenomenal writing style. I know the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale, and I really didn't think that Wolf would be an actual wolf, just because adding werewolves into this story would just bring it a little over the top. But the hybrids made by Levana? GENIUS. It does break my heart that poor Wolf is controlled and can't be himself, but I do have hope for him now that Cinder will be training with him. But I can't even count the number of times where I thought that one thing would happen, but something completely different happened.
I want Kai to communicate with Cinder so badly. I know that he still obviously has feelings for her and I feel like deep down, he doesn't believe she is the kind of person who would do all of the things she has been accused of.
My heart hurt so much when Cinder had to leave Peony's ID chip behind. I really hope she gets it back somehow.
There were so many instances in this book when I thought all hope was lost. With Marissa, you never know if the situation will end positively or negatively. When Cinder was facing against Jael and the seven wolf-hybrids, I truly thought she would get taken away while the others escaped.
Finally, I ship Scarlet and Wolf so harddddd. I wish I had a better idea of what Wolf looked like, because the image of him I have in my head is not very pretty xD
I highly anticipate getting Cress! I may buy it this weekend, or I may just wait until Christmas. |

But I am just dying because my book subscription service Scribd only has the first book. I am hanging on the cliffhanger! XP Such a great story though. |

| I JUST FINISHED CRESS AND I AM DYING FROM THE FEELS. - Spoilers:
I AM HOPING AGAINST HOPE THAT THORNE AND CRESS GET TOGETHER BECAUSE I NEED THIS TO HAPPEN. ALSO THE KISS BETWEEN THORNE AND CRESS AND CINDER AND KAI AND EVERYTHING I JUST CAN'T.
Again, I am just amazed by how Marissa Meyer surprises me. I think that I expect one thing, but then I'm taken completely by surprise. I really really hope that they get Scarlet back, and I cannot bear to have any more important characters die. Erland's death was really hard for me to read. But I'm glad he died with some triumph.
For those who have read Cress, did you read the 'Ask the Author' questions at the end? There are a TON of Sailor Moon comments, and Marissa even mentioned that readers should watch Sailor Moon Crystal. I thought that was pretty neat.
Anyway...I really love how Marissa maintains the personalities of her characters throughout the entire story. This is probably the first series I have ever read in which all of the books in the series are just as good as the last. I'm going to read Fairest now, and will probably finish it by tonight XD.

| So I finished Winter forever ago and didn't post xD - Spoilers:
I can't begin to explain how bittersweet the ending was. I wasn't ready to finish what was an amazing story, so I'm glad I have Stars Above to hold me over until Marissa's new book comes out.
I was shocked, to say the least, by how the conflict with Levana ended. I didn't expect Levana to give in (shocker, Meyer did something I didn't expect), so when she did I thought about and I was like, "Okay, I can see this happening with Levana's selfish character." BUT THEN LEVANA TURNED AROUND AND STABBED CINDER IN THE HEART AND I JUST LOST IT. I seriously thought Meyer was going to kill off Cinder. And Kai holding her at the end was just T_T.
There wasn't a single point in the book where I wasn't hooked, waiting to see what would happen. I was, however, getting tired of how the group was never allowed to be whole. They were always missing just one person, and it drove me nuts. I just wanted them all to be together so badly.
And Winter's ending broke my heart. I felt so sorry for her, but I was so proud of her for using her gift and doing what she had to do. But the way it crushed her was so heartbreaking and sad, I can't get over it. But I'm so glad she has a guy like Jacin who will stay with her and protect her, no matter what happens to her.
AND WOLF OMG WHEN THEY CHANGED HIM I JUST T_T I love Wolf so much, and I can't believe he was mutated a second time. But the power of love and having and alpha female still, no matter what, won over Wolf's mind and body. The way he always protected Scarlet, even when he was hardly even human, will forever be one of my favorite moments. I need to write a fanfiction about these two.
I was very happy with the Cress/Thorne romance! To be completely honest, they were the only pairing that I wasn't sure would become canon. Thorne was so much older than Cress, and he just seemed like he had no interest/didn't want to ruin Cress's purity. But I am so happy they got to be together, and Thorne's guilt over what he did to Cress was heartbreaking but so satisfying for my hopeless romantic heart.
And don't even get me started on Cinder and Kai. If I don't get a marriage by the end of Stars Above, I will be pissed.

| I love this series! I have all of the books and read them all too! What really surprised me is that Marissa Meyer the author of the Lunar Chronicles series is a Sailor Moon fan and I never knew that she was a Sailor Moon Fan Fiction writter until I did research. To be honest when I first started to read this series, I knew that Marissa Meyer was inspired by Sailor Moon when she wrote the Lunar Chronicles series and that she is also inspired by Fairy Tale stories too along with Greek Mythology.
