Thoughts on both? Does anyone own one? if so why?
And what games for both does anyone recommend?

I own a 3DS and well..... that's it. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes playing on handhelds.
My reason for owning it is..... because I love Nintendo lol.
My favorite and recommended games for it are: Any of the Pokemon games Any of the Zeldas (Majora's Mask 3D is coming!!) Fire Emblem: Awakening Rune Factory 4

My fiance has a PS Vita, which I think can integrate into the Playstation 4. That's why I got it for him, because that's a feature he wants. But... we both really, really want to play a bunch of the games on the 3DS.

I don't own a PS Vita, so I can't talk about it, but I do have a 3DS. I bought one because I usually get Nintendo consoles over others, and I just really like their products in general. They have good customer service. ^^
I'd also recommend getting the main Pokemon games, the Zelda remakes coming out, Mario Kart, and Fire Emblem. The 3DS is getting a lot of good RPG games in general, and the Nintendo E Shop lets you download older games too and buy newer games in digital form. But if you do think about getting one, I would wait until the newer model comes out sometime next year, I think. Unless you want to wait to upgrade, which probably won't be a problem in terms of getting the newest mainstream games.

Here's a really good video that compares the two systems. I think in terms of technology, they're kin of even. A lot is going to come down to the types of games you like to play.
I tend to like more RPG, Fantasy, games like Pokemon, Tomodachi life, Harvest Moon. PS Vita is going to be more like 1st person shooters, actions games, sports games etc.

Actually Vita has a ton of RPG games at least in Japan. I'm not sure how many RPG titles have been released outside of Japan. I do know a lot people do complain about the Vita and how it lack games, but that could people just dissing the system.
*ahem*
There are currently 3 models for the 3DS
Model 1:
Model 2:
Spoiler:
Model two is known as 3DS XL.
Comparison:
Model 3:
This model is known has the 2DS. It does not have the 3D feature and does not close. It was made for small children and gamers who are on a budget. It plays 3DS and DS games like the other models. It just won't use the 3D feature for the 3DS games. Let's get real! Who uses that feature anyway? I never have.
I currently own the 3DS, first model. I love it and I don't regret my purchase at all. Nintendo makes great handhelds and gives them a vast library of games. You will be able to find games that interest you. I believe this their best handheld ever. It's comfortable to hold and not awkward to control. Which model to get? Even though I love my 3DS I wished I got an XL. The screen is bigger plus has a longer battery life.
Just a side note. There is a new model out in Japan right now! It's called the New 3DS. Yes that's it's name.... Anyway it has better CPU, new buttons, and better 3D. There is also an XL version. It will also have an exclusive game. Will this be worth to get when it comes out in North America and Europe? Who knows at this point. I have no idea how well it has done in Japan. I do know it has been released in Australia and New Zealand already. Me personally I'm going to wait to get it to see if it will get more games worth playing. So go ahead and buy the 3DS!! Because who knows when the New 3DS will come out to other parts of the world. All I know it releases worldwide in 2015.
Ask anymore questions! I am a Nintendo nerd.

Wow you guys! Thank you for the information!
I'm pretty sure my husband got me a 3DS XL (which you can get off the Nintendo store refurbished some times) for Christmas.... He's pretending I don't know buuuut. I've personally been looking at them for a while (in PINK OMG)
I didn't know the XL had an exclusive game though! Woah!
If my (already known) assumption is correct then I'm probably going to look at the Pink PSVita, which I did not know plays PSP games for download. I know they came out with a new model this November for the PS Vita. Suppose to be a better, but I think the biggest hang up is the games I'm not aware of.
I was able to play both of them for a bit while my brother in law lived with me, but I didn't really get a feel for the long term worth of both of them. Plus I tried not to poke around and really get a feel for the system it's self.
I have played Bravely Default on the 3DS, but haven't seen a 3DS XL in person yet. I was leaning towards the 3DSXL because I know a sequal to that game is coming out. We own a PS4, but I'm not sure I'd use it together really. We mostly bought it for my husbands version of FFXIV ARR.
I really DO like rpg games, so any recommendations for both? I know the Vita has a Final Fantasy game out that looked pretty interesting.

3DS XLs are nice. My friend owns one. I just want it for the longer battery life.
Just so you're not confused. The exclusive game for the 3DS XL is for the New 3DS and New 3D XL. I have no idea why Nintendo slapped new in front of 3DS. They should have called it a new name or use the word Super. Non Nintendo gamers are going to get so confused. They had issues when the released the 3DS. People were getting it confused with the DS.
I know nothing about Vitas. All my knowledge comes from youtube comments sadly. People dissing it and people defending it. I believe you can connect it to the PS4 and if you buy a game that is available on both systems you can play it on both. Sadly Nintendo doesn't do this for 3DS and the Wii U.

I love love love my 3DS! I have the first Zelda edition 3DS and my fiance has the Zelda 3DSXL. I haven't had a lot of time to play it but it has SO many great games and then the original DS library was fantastic just on its own (and hte games would be cheaper now and there are SO MANY good DS games).
When I worked at Gamestop over a year ago, PS Vita had no library and the only decent thing was hte ps4 hook up (that wasn't out yet at the time) and the entire PS library available for download...but they were not selling at all. Not sure what hte lbrary looks like now though.
I had one that I had gotten for free from Sony for working as an assistant manager at gametop...it unfortunately got knocked over, cracked, and never fixed. :/ The cost to repair it is almost as much as getting a new one, so if it ever picks up steam and I get interested in it again I may consider, but I'm perfectly happy with my 3DS.
I think Nintendo really wins the handheld market. Its really hard to compete.

I don't play my 3DS a lot since I'm not into console gaming but I really enjoy mine. I have a pink 3DS XL and I don't regret it. I would recommend it as well.
If you like Final Fantasy you can buy Theatrhythm Final Fantasy. (If you do it buy it, buy the sequel, Curtail Call. It has a LOT more features in it compared to the first one.) I would really, really recommend Chrono Trigger. It's a DS game but it can play on the 3ds. It's one of the best rpgs of all time. I think Animal Crossing: New Leaf was grossly over-hyped but it is cute. There are a lot of blatant flaws in the game that annoy me but I would recommend it.

Spoiler:
It's been awhile since I've played the game so I can't remember everything I disliked but...I just find it annoying how you are supposed to be the major yet it never seemed as if you had as much control over your town as you should. For instance, one of the biggest issues with this game for me is the move-in system. Villagers can move into your town and they can't move out until they ask you...which could take months. Sometimes they don't even ask; they just up and move. (Stitches, who was a villager in my town, just moved without a word. :'()
As the mayor I think you should have control over who does and does not live in your town. I'm don't think players should have unlimited control but I do think the option to evict a villager should be available to use once a month or something. The town itself is another thing you don't have enough control over imo. Villagers can just plop their houses down anywhere when they move in and I remember not liking something about how the public work projects worked. The game can also get repetitive quickly which is also why I don't play a lot.
Of course this is all my personal opinions and it might not bother some. uwu.

I'm surprised no one has commented on Bravely Default, I definitely think it should be recommended ^^ I wish there were more games like it >.>

Spoiler:
In Previous AC games villagers will just up and move. You never really have control over it. I could be wrong, but them telling you about their plans to move is new to the series. Yeah it would have been nice to have more control over your town as the mayor, but it's a start? Maybe in the next entry they take it up a notch. I have been playing AC since its first entry on the Gamecube so it was nice to see something new. Also AC is a very repetitive no matter what version you play. It's like Harvest Moon you'll get a huge mood to play it then you put it down for months. Downside to that is that your villagers yell at you. ;-;
Don't feel bad! New Leaf is praised highly because it brought something new to the series. There's more things to do besides upgrade your house and complete the museum.
@Queenie
I have never played it! I do want to check it out, but I am very picky with RPGs.

@Yami
Spoiler:
Yeah New Leaf was my introduction to the series so I didn't really know what to expect when I bought it. I figured that a lot of the features must have been a really big deal to the fans who have played before which is nice. The series is very enjoyable when I ignore the things I dislike and I would definitely pick up the next game in the series.
I've been trying to complete the museum but a lot of times I put down my 3ds I end up forgetting about it. ;v; I did have a good amount done but getting all the fossils was a pain. Every time I find a 'new' one it turns out it was one I already had. :/
@Queenie I haven't finished it which is why I didn't mention it. It's a really good game so far Yami. :3
