Why is it that it seems like nobody is particularly bothered by the existence of the supernatural in Sailor Moon? Like in the real world, if a supernatural realm of monsters and magical transforming girls was discovered, it would be the major scientific discovery of the century with major philosophical implications. Usagi is about the only one who freaked out about it and even then it was moreso because she was afraid than for a deep philosophical reason. Even Ami who you would think would be all over doing massive research of this supernatural realm seems to accept it rather casually without any much interest in learning more than what's required of her. Rei's psychic powers seem to be treated as an everyday event rather than a major scientific breakthrough even before Rei discovers she's Sailor Mars. Even when ordinary people like Umino and Naru encounter a monster of the day, their reaction is treated more like Usagi's where they're just scared of and then it seems like the next day they go on living their ordinary lives with no real major change in anything. And apparently NASA is for some reason unable to pick up the existence of ancient ruins on the moon which would be like the biggest proof of alien life ever. It just seems odd to me that none of these implications are ever brought up in the anime and the supernatural seems to be taken as a given and an ordinary part of life rather than a major scientific breakthrough.

For normal people like Naru, they probably think it's just a dream or something and shrug it off. Otherwise, don't you think they'd like develop ASD or PTSD after such events?

Next, I'm not surprised that the senshi just accept it. They're senshi. That's pretty abnormal by itself so if there magical transformations, attacks, and a talking cat, pretty much anything can go to them. Also, sometimes things just can't be explained or the explanation isn't the main focus.

I dunno. I'll think more on this.

Because it's an anime just like a lot of other fantasy animes. People just accept it. That's it.

The same could be said for Saint Seiya. Saori held a freaking tournament in which the fighters LITERALLY MAGICALLY BEAT THEMSELVES TO DEATH and nobody seems worried about it.

The most supernatural thing in sailor moon is how Haruka and Michiru got their helicopters anyway.

I'll stick with Tuxie's answer. The senshi themselves are probably unconsciously already used to all that supernatural stuff since they had fought in their previous lives even though they didn't remember that. I could refer to the episode (sorry I don't remember the number >___<) in Makaiju arc where the inners hadn't still gotten their memories back but felt they had to fight and not to run away.

And for normal people yeah they probably think all those things as nightmares; human mind tries to protect itself in all ways, even sweeping past memories away in some cases.

That is because Madoka is purposefully doing that with its story. Most magical girl shows are generally light fantasy in which some things just won't be realistic for the sake of it being a fantasy. Madoka (while i haven't seen it all, i know a bit about it) seems to aim at a bit more of a realistic approach to the whole magical girl genre.

Anyway, my only true concern with everything is Naru. Naru watches someone she loves (Nephrite) DIE right in front of her. Yeah, she gets over it...but I seriously would expect her to be way more shaken up than shown in the anime. I know its not the main focus of the show, but while its easier to write off the victims of the day maybe just thinking its a nightmare or something, Naru just doesn't have that excuse after the whole Nephrite deal.

But even other Toei-produced kid's fantasy anime series from the same era take a more believable approach to the supernatural. Like in DBZ, when the aliens first arrive on the Earth and start blowing everything up, everyone is freaking out, there's a genuine amount of shock and confusion going on, and even the government and the media sends out its authorities to investigate, and ordinary citizens act very surprised when they see people flying around in the sky and shooting energy beams.

But like in Sailor Moon, Shingo and the kids don't seem too particularly bothered that they wound up mysteriously in a department store in the middle of the night when Usagi kills the lizard monster thing. Instead, Shingo's first reaction is to randomly ask Sailor Moon for her autograph. Even the live-action Sailor Moon did explore their reactions in a more serious manner. Like in PGSM when Usagi found out they're really people from the moon, it was a huge shock for her and she started crying about it. But in the anime, they treated it more like a joke and Usagi just made a cutesy joke about the rabbit on the moon.

But DBZ is a COMPLETELY different type of show than Sailor Moon. O_o You can't really compare those two.

For all we know, it could be a statement on the fact how humanity just ignores when something bad happens adn peole get attacked.


Also people do run away and freak out at the monsters, remember the S movie when the ice things attacked? And people were like "OMFG RUN AWAY" *gets frozed* "OH NOES I'M FROZED". xD

But then afterwards everyone went back to normal and just went back to shopping like nothing had happened. I can accept some level of disbelief as to how the supernatural is treated in kid's cartoons but I just wonder how the government explained everything to the people on Earth after all the massive worldwide destruction and attacks on civilians Galaxia caused at the end of Stars. That just seems like something so massive it'd be impossible for the people to ignore.

Well after Galaxia, Usagi becomes queen. So they probably explain what happened and how they saved the people of earth and they automatically accept her as their protective queen figure head. And then she just helps them deal with it if there's any other chaos (which there shouldn't be). So.

It's just an anime. Don't give stuff like this too much thought XD like I said, then you'd have to think about all the people that would have ASD or PTSD (or should have). And then you'd have to get down to the point of: this could never happen. No girls can transform. No evil entities would come to earth. No magic happens. This is fake. Not real. Pretend. Not. Real.

A human can adapt to lots of things. What causes you strong emotions today, doesn't bother you after a month of repeating every day. In my head, a good chunk of the world's current population are reborn Silver Millenium folk. So they have that same unconscious knowledge of magic, but with an added "eh, not my problem, that's for the royals to deal with" aspect.

I see Sailor Moon as a propaganda film. Instead of trying to be a "peeking lens" to their world, it's much like the show's NQS's propaganda medium showing what she and her senshi believe the populace should do, rather than what the people really did. Sort of a retroactive history change by an authority.

It kinda shows the food chain:

Senshi: Aristocrats by birthright.
Youma: Can be killed without any remorse (sounds familiar?)
People: Worth less than a youma in a fight, but are not actively terminated like them.
Silver Crystal: device of final solution, and genocide/xenocide.

On her defense, I don't think Naoko intended it to be this way.

That's how I like to think - because after SO many times of it happening, you would get used to it and I think they really came to relay on the Senshi. Kinda of like "Oh! We have these heros to help us, so it's all ok!" Besides the point that no one really got hurt - only got their energy taken from them and such.

But even the Senshi get to the point where just don't want to job anymore but they know they have to and I like to believe they didn't TRULY have anything "to fight for" until Chibi Usa came and they learned of their future and what was to come of all their hard work.

For Naru - first off, poor baby (lol) - I like to think because on the Moon Princess Serenity was just a Princess and not a Senshi, maybe Naru was a childhood friend. Since the Senshi had to train and such of course, they wouldn't have ALWAYS been with the Princess.
