So I was watching episode fifty of the R season and I noticed a misc. character who I am pretty much convinced is a guest character from another anime. I could be totally wrong or this could be common knowledge amongst fans – but I just realized it the other day. Lol.

Ok, so in episode fifty Usagi and Mamoru (as well as the others) go to this really popular arcade. While they are waiting outside, Mamoru sees this “delinquent” type character bothering Ann and defends her.


Anyone recognize this character? When I first saw him I thought that he looked familiar and then it struck me: He is Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho!

He looks JUST like him but in Sailor Moon-style. The curl of his hair and his body language: the twist of his lips and even the hulking way in which he walks, all near identical to Kuwabara. Another reason why I feel this way is because Yu Yu Hakusho is created by Yoshihiro Togashi -- Naoko Takeuchi’s husband!

Maybe I am wrong, but wouldn’t it be delightful if Takeuchi’s husband’s character had a cameo in her anime? XD What do you think?

I wouldn't be surprised it it was a cameo, particularly after learning they're married. o3o That's so cool.

It's a fairly specific (though simple) character design, so...

Except Naoko Takeuchi married Yoshihiro Togashi at least five years after this episode aired. Though they might have been dating at the time, this cameo most likely wouldn't have been due to Naoko's input because she had limited involvement with the anime (she was still working in later Sailor Moon arcs at the time).

I'm pretty sure the senshi had a cameo somewhere in Inuyasha though.

I remember reading about a cameo on Inuyasha on some wikipedia page. I even remember looking the episode up on myspace videos (this was at least three years ago) and watching most of the ep to find it. Whatever the cameo was, it happened for literally a second and I thought it was lame (I think I remember thinking something along the lines of "that's not necessarily Sailor Moon").

I was almost positive it was some of the senshi because I've never been this obsessed with an anime before. I don't think I would have gone through the trouble unless it was Sailor Moon.

Yet, I can't find anything of the sort. Sorry for getting your hopes up. I'll keep searching though 'cause this is annoying me.

Aww, Inuyasha was my very first anime! It was my gateway. I almost had a heart attack when you mentioned that...

But yes, characters from another anime DID make a cameo in episode 128 of Inuyasha. I'm not sure which anime it was, but it isn't Sailor Moon.

I believe in the Kuwa cameo- the creators of SM and YYH are old friends, and ended up getting married! The fact that, in that scene, Darien looks a bit like Yuusuke (hair and color of his jacket) add to that possibility. There are numerous Sailor Moon references in Yuu Yuu Hakusho, too:

* Side-story where Kurama throws a rose and says "Just call me Tuxedo Mask" (manga-only, season 1)
* Koenma cosplaying as Tuxedo Mask in Makai Tournament (anime, final season)
* Botan wearing Sailor Moon buns and star/moon-themed pajamas in one scene (Dark Tournament, anime-only)
* Juri doing a SM-style transformation after the mist of the Fruit of Past Lives wears off (Dark Tournament, fight where Youko Kurama first appears, anime-only)

I think that there was a bit of borrowing in designs of secondary characters, too: a kind-hearted plant user with red hair and green eyes who takes care of the others and fights tough, but values home life + a dark-haired, anti-social-but-loyal fire-wielding psychic who loves black and red color schemes. Touya is a blue-haired, very intelligent ice-user in the YYH Dark Tournament saga who wears blue and might be a semi-borrow from Mercury (other ice-users in anime from the same time period are also like this- Mikagami from Flame of Recca comes to mind.) Itsuki is a direct expy of Neptune (even the HAIR and obsession with being around water), but with a sex-change, and Sensui is (to the extent of the relationship with Itsuki) an expy of Haruka. Keep in mind that Togashi (the YYH author) admits to having a perverse sense of humor, so he often does tongue-in-cheek jokes in his work. That Level E was also written by him really tells you all you need to know about his sense of humor. ^^;;;; (I love Togashi, though...) Since it's KIND OF on the topic: people have talked for years about Youko Kurama resembling the titular character of Inuyasha- well, Togashi was Takahashi Rumiko's student when he was learning how to draw manga, so it's highly possible that one or the other of the two was borrowed from the other...

Why didn't I think of that? I actually took a screencap of that weeks ago I can't believe it never occurred to me in this topic. Some things are coincidental IMO but Koenma as Tuxedo Kamen is too rich.

That was an interesting analysis. I think it has less to do with being inspired by a specific work so much as character archetypes.

Example: Jupiter and Kurama's affiliation with plants. Plants are kind of symbolic of a simplistic, almost domestic life so its natural that these aspects would bleed into the characters' personalities during development.

Oh wow, I just watched that episode recently and I can't believe I didn't notice the resemblance! Though Naoko and Togashi weren't married at the time, I wouldn't be surprised if it really was him just because they were both really popular anime.

Of course, I'm sure a lot of you know about Shin-chan's cameo in S xD I think it was around episode 104, give or take? And respectively, several Sailor Moon characters have shown up on Shin-chan. iirc the shows share several seiyuu.

I LOVE the Shin-Chan cameo in S. It is HILARIOUS.

Oh and the funny thing about the Excel Saga scene that spoofs Sailor Moon is that Kotono Mitsuishi (Usagi's seiyuu) also voices Excel. XD

Well I have seen some references to at least magical girl type animes in Bleach, some of which seem very very close to referencing Sailor Moon in particular. I had posted a few on another forum but will have to try to find them again. Either way it seems there is some runover between different types of anime.

NG Knight Lamune & 40 DX

The show was super popular in Japan in the early '90's (like Sailor Moon) and is basically about a kid who gets transported inside of a video game. This series is one of the OVAs, in which the three heroines pretty much are Sailor Moon characters.

The Lamune DX series is pretty much a rip on Sailor Moon (in a nice way!) and is about three episodes long. I don't think anyone's ever subtitled it before, but if anyone were interested I could probably get it done. ^____^
