| Subject: 25 Games. 1 Year. 2017. 1st January 2017, 1:22 pm | |
| ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?
This challenge was originally inspired by the 52 Games. 1 Year. 2016. thread on NeoGaf. The original challenge is to complete 52 games for the 52 weeks of the year. Since the Galaxy Cauldron isn't a gaming forum, the number has been lowered to make it more accessible for members here.DO I HAVE TO PLAY JUST 25 GAMES?Nope! If you want to document more than 25 video-games you've completed than feel free to do so! However to 'complete' the challenge you need to complete a minimum of 25 games.DOES A REPLAY OF A GAME COUNT?Yes. Just clarify that it's a replay in your post.WHAT IF I STARTED A GAME BEFORE 2017?That's cool. As long as you finish the game this year it counts.SO HOW DO I GET STARTED?For starters, claim a post. The post you claimed is where you document the games you have managed to complete throughout the year. When documenting your game, you must number your game, state the title of it, and the system you played it on. You can optionally state many hours you completed it in, the date you completed it, as well as leave your opinion on it (how long said opinion is entirely depends on you). While the latter is optional, it's preferred you give your opinion on a game to help people avoid it or buy it depending on how strongly you feel on it. Here's an example on format: - Quote :
- 1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (3DS) - 40.3 Hours played. Beaten 1/26/2017.
I truly enjoyed the Ocarina of Time and recommend it to anyone who has been hesitant of playing the LoZ series like I was. It definitely lives up to it's name as one of the best RPGs of its time and I plan on immersing myself in the rest of the series in the future! Again you don't have to follow this format exactly. It should be similar however.WHAT WILL I GET IF I COMPLETE THE CHALLENGE?You'll get....nothing! Nah, I'm just kidding. You'll get a reward for completing the challenge.HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE LEFT?364 Days! An official countdown timer will be added soon. ARCHIVE.2016. YUNIE'S ULTRA RAD HALL OF FAMERS. Reserved for members who have completed the challenge.

| Completed1. Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC) - Completed on 1/12/16 - Completed Story - Rating: - Review:
This game turned out to be little more than a recycling of its predecessor. Despite intense hype, it was the same hack-and-slash, spooky nonsense story as the first, with less interesting combat and an underwhelming final boss fight. The fact that I actually had to force myself to finish it is a recommendation to not waste your money on this title.
2. The Witcher II (PC) - Completed on 1/27/16 - Completed Story - Rating: - Review:
I really enjoyed this game. Why only three stars then? It's short considering the complex story it unfurls... a very obvious case of, "Oops, we ran out of money!" I felt cheated by an ending where all lose ends are wrapped up through a conversation with another character just before the credits roll. The Witcher II shows its age with a combat system that never really feels quite right, a skills tree you never actually need to understand or use much, and complicated alchemy/potions processes that there's no point in exploring beyond healing or minor buffs. That said, this game gets a lot right. The story is rich, the characters have depth, and it has excellent replay value, revealing an entirely different level/part of the game based on a major choice in the first chapter. If one of my major complaints was that I wanted more to play, that's not the worst gaming flaw. In Progress1. Brutal Legend 2. Crypt of the Necrodancer 3. Enter the Gungeon 4. Divinity: Original Sin 5. Rise of the Tomb Raider6. Monaco 7. Deus Ex: Human Revolution 8. Portal 2 9. Stacking 10. Tales of Zestiria 11. Trine 3 12. Pokemon Go 13. Starbound 14. Dark Souls 15. One Finger Death Punch 16. SWTOR 17. Long Live the Queen 18. Lovers In a Dangerous Spacetime Want to Play1. Epistory 2. Learn Japanese to Survive - Hiragana Battle 3. Mirror's Edge 4. Costume Quest 2 5. Dust: An Elysian Tail 6. FTL: Faster Than Light 7. Pokemon X

| Right ok I'm gonna actually try to do this: Playing: 1. Chrono Trigger (replay sorta, SNES port to iPhone): Status: Getting the Masamune (I started the game over) 2. Doom (PC ported to PS3) Status: Near the end of the third section I don't remember which level exactly 3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (replay, GameCube version)- Status: the worst dungeon in the series the Wind Temple
Finished games: 1. Undertale (PC): Wow. What a game. If you haven't played this game yet, you probably should, just because of the awesome meta commentary on video games. It's funny, got great music and characters, interesting gameplay, and is very pretty to look at. My only real issue is how short the game is. 2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between World's (Replay, 3DS): I think I actually like this game a bit more this time around. Still fun and full of awesome characters, cool game mechanics, and two beautiful worlds to explore. Now I need to get BotW 3. Journey (PS3): Quite possibly my favorite game ever made. A story about stories, you control a robed figure wandering the desert on a representation of the Hero's Journey. The visuals are so pretty you might start crying and the music is some of the best you'll every hear ever. A great argument for "games as art" and something everyone should play. 4. Flower (PS3): Another artsy little indie game from the makers of Journey, thatgamecompany (this one actually came put before Journey), while I don't think it's as good as the latter, it's still a beautiful experience with awesome visuals and music. Definitely a must-play. 5. Oxenfree (PC): This game has it all: Amazing story, neat mechanics, multiple endings, great voice acting and dialogue, GORGEOUS art direction, synthy, nostalgic music, and plenty of things left open for theorizing. The only gripe I think I have is that the walking can get kind of boring and awkward to control, but that's not a huge deal that takes away from the game. I recommend playing this game twice, one playthrough right after the other, because there are things that are different on repeat playthroughs that are significant.
To play goals: 1. Shadow of the Colossus (replay, PS2 original but playing PS3 remaster) 2. Alien: Isolation (PS3) 3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) 4. Kid Icarus: Uprising (3DS; okay so I actually started playing this last year, got stuck, set it aside, and then lost it when we moved houses. Hopefully it's somewhere around here somewhere...) 5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch; y'know, when it comes out and all) 6. The Last Guardian 7. ICO (replay for the millionth time) 8. The Stanley Parable (replay with goal of getting as many endings without having to hack the game or click a button for 4 hours)

| Okay! I am copying over my list from last year because I didn't beat any of my games hahaha. I also added a few more to the list! In Progress:1. Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (GBC Download for 3DS) Replay. I haven't played this game since I was 9. I'm currently at the part with the mermaid in the bay near Catfish Maw. 2. Pokemon Yellow (GB Download for 3DS) Replay. I haven't played this game since I was 9. I'm only on the second gym. I'm trying to catch all of the Pokemon as I go. XD 3. SaGa 2 Hihō Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny/サガ2秘宝伝説 GODDESS OF DESTINY (DS) It's kind of a replay. XD It's a remake of the GB game SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend II). I started playing this game a year or two ago and finally decided to pick it up again. I'm currently dying in the Nasty Dungeon with 37:00 of total playtime. AFTER SaGa 2, I'm playing SaGa 3! XD Update: I tried to fight Odin, but he kicked my butt so I'm grinding for stats in the Nasty Dungeon. I might go fight the Dragon God. Finally moving onto the last town! The final boss is insane in the remake. IT JUST WON'T DIE. T_T 4. Imperial SaGa: (Browser) Not sure if this one counts since it's a browser game, but hey! XD It has a New Game+ option at the end. This game is also ridiculously brutal, but that's mostly my fault since I haven't played all of the SaGa games and this is essentially a SaGa multiverse, so idk what to expect from a lot of the monsters and bosses. You can't soft reset in the game either, so if your characters die in battle, they are gone for good (unless you get them again in the character gacha). You can retreat though, which is nice...but it wastes time. I already went over my 10 year limit for the first mission because I didn't realize that in-game events unrelated to the main story counted toward the time limit. >_>; Anyway, I'm procrastinating on Chapter 1 until I get Rocbouquet or Byunei from the gacha learn more about the monsters and attacks. UPDATE: Rocbouquet GET! TIME TO MOVE ON! 5. Pokemon Sun: I haven't played this game since...early December. XD I really need to get back into it! 6. Pokemon Alpha Sapphire: Same deal as Sun, but worse! XD 7. Romancing SaGa 2: I just got this game on mobile, and I am super addicted! I'm already almost 8 hours into the game and I'm only on year 1001, meaning that only one year has passed since I started playing! This is going to be one heck of a journey! Finished:1.) SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend II): (GB) Replay. I just finished grinding for stats and managed to beat Odin. Now I am making my way to the final town and dungeon. It's going to be a brutal trip! XD Just beat the second to last boss. Holy crap, this last dungeon is brutal. My party is going to be dead before it reaches the final boss. Whooo! Nuked the crap out of the final boss and won. XD Actually, everybody got wrecked except my esper Sari. Bless her and her high defense. She somehow managed to stay alive by alternating between Cure and Flare even though the boss was way faster than her. XD The game's ending was pretty simple, but I thought it was cute! It made me kind of want to play again, but I have so many other games to start and finish. 2.) SaGa 3 (Final Fantasy Legend III): (GB) That final boss was brutal! D:

| Good thread! Beat1. Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut (PC) - Quote :
- I was not expecting much from this game, but I enjoyed it enough to buy the sequel. There's not much of a story to it, and thus not much to say about it, but it is fun and colorful. If you don't like backtracking I'd probably stay away, though.
2. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (PC) - Quote :
- I think this is the Shantae game I prefer. This one definitely has more of a story, so it gets points for that over Risky already. The characters are much more alive in this game, and it hadn't yet devolved into the casual platformer that Half-Genie Hero would be. Lots of backtracking in this one too, but they're both so fun I didn't mind. The difficulty really ramps up at the last dungeon, though, and almost made me stop playing. Another thing to mention about this game and Risky, if you're worried about an overabundance of fanservice or whatever, these games really have none apart from some small dialogue bits, and obviously, some of characters' clothes.
3. Corinne Cross's Dead & Breakfast (PC) - Quote :
- Not much to say about this one, but it's nice and melancholy and short. It's a very streamlined point and click game about a girl who has to run a bed and breakfast for a few days for a neighbor(? Can't quite remember)....and everyone at the b&b are ghosts who don't want to move on. It's sweet, sad, short and has nice art.
4. Toonstruck (PC) - Quote :
- If you like 90's western animation and don't mind adventure games, you should try this out; at least for the art and all the voice talent. Sadly, those are the biggest points in its favor - it falls victim to illogical puzzles, it's not very funny at all, and just...kind of lifeless in its writing, which is really ironic.
5. Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight (PC) - Quote :
- It looks nice, but it's boring. It's a metroidvania with little to no story. Eh.
6. The Knife of Dunwall (Dishonored DLC - PS4) - Quote :
- It's basically just a little more Dishonored, but from a different character's POV. I reaaaally like the Dishonored franchise, so it's really hard for me to find glaring faults with this. Short, sweet, good.
7. The Brigmore Witches (Dishonored DLC - PS4) - Quote :
- See what I said about Knife.
8. Dishonored 2 (PS4) - Quote :
- I may have preferred the first game story-wise, but this was still really good. I beat it in low-chaos as Emily.
9. Kelvin & The Infamous Machine (PC) - Quote :
- I really like adventure/point and clicks games in theory, but I often get frustrated with their mechanics. This game, however, was a really pleasant surprise. It's relatively short (adventure games can drag), has a pretty decent style, good voice acting (I almost never like voice acting) and puzzles that weren't too wacky. The story was okay, but the overall charm is really what makes this a decent game. The one thing I could fault it for is that each area felt kind of empty. It's almost like they cut out any kind of filler and just really streamlined the areas, but some more things to interact or even a little more life to the areas would have been nice.
Last time I checked, it had very few Steam reviews and didn't seem to get a lot of press coverage, which is shame. 10. Yakuza 0 (PS4) - Quote :
- The story didn't really do it for me; when there are a lot of names involved, it's hard for me to keep everything straight. It was basically an action movie in game form.
The side content was pretty great though. So much stuff to do and it's why I played this for like 50 hours. 11. Night in the Woods (PC) - Quote :
- I thought this was a good coming-of-age story, but faltered with the more...otherworldy parts. Great art, and characters that rung true to me, but maybe aren't very likeable.
But I did like it more than Life is Strange. It's actually sort of comparable to that in several ways. 12. Wander No More (PC) - Quote :
- This looked kind of promising; decent art, etc. I'd stay away though, it's cliche as hell, about an hour long, and nothing really happens until the end. This honestly should have been a longer game, but writing this bad, I don't know if that would have helped.
13. Roundabout (PS4) - Quote :
- An arcade-style game with low-budget, 70's aesthetics, complete with grainy FMVs and low-budget wigs and outfits. You play the silent taxi driver of a constantly revolving taxi who has to get passengers to their destinations. Fun enough, not too hard. Definitely unique.
14. Along the Edge (PC) - Quote :
- A visual novel about a girl who inherits an old house in the French countryside with some supernatural crap thrown in. I was pretty captivated at first, but translation errors and a pretty boring story made me lose interest fast. The biggest saving grace of this VN is the great art, but it's also one of those games where you make choices that determine your temperament, appearance and ending.
15. Four Last Things (PC) - Quote :
- This is about a two hour adventure game about a guy who has to go through Renaissance style paintings to commit the seven deadly sins. Fun enough, unique as hell.
