There's always lots of discussion as to whether or not Mamoru is "Sailor Earth" (and I even saw a thread recently with a headcanon that Chibiusa was the Sailor Earth!) but in my mind, the Earth has always, for whatever reason, been defenseless and protected by the moon.

This makes sense to me since the other senshi are guardians of planets but Sailor Moon is the guardian of Earth's Moon. So, what do you guys think? Following this storyline/headcanon, were the Moon senshi once denizens of Earth? Were they run off world? Was there never a Sailor Earth to begin with?

I do believe that the Earth and the moon are connected, and that in some way, the moon is Earth's protector. I can't say whether Mamoru is a Senshi but he is definitely the representative of the planet, in place of "Sailor Earth".

Now that I think about it, a lot of the villains kinda circumvented the moon to attack Earth: Beryl, an Earthling, made a deal with Metalia to support the creature; the Black Moon Clan traveled through time; the Death Busters invaded through a tear in space; and Nehellenia was trapped within the moon and already placed a curse on the planet, which only took full effect after the solar eclipse. The only one to completely get pass the moon was the Shadow Galactica, and they had Chaos, the ultimate evil's, backing.

I think it was implied that Queen Serenity was not native to the Solar System, so I always assumed that she migrated to the Moon and made a kingdom there, creating/founding whoever lived there in the past. 

Going by that logic, I do think that there is a possibility of a Sailor Earth, it just hadn't naturally developed yet. Maybe being so close to the Silver Crystal triggered something in Earth that caused the Golden Crystal to pick Mamoru too early? Like, Earth would not have drawn the attention of Chaos on its own, so it never needed a guardian until Serenity inadvertently brought it here as it chased her? 

I headcanon that if the Moon wasn't so strong, the Earth would have eventually developed its own senshi when she was needed. And if Mamoru eventually dies in Crystal Tokyo time, he may come back as Sailor Earth, now that Earth has developed more.

I think her explanation of how the Japanese word hoshi 星 is used is a good reasoning why Naoko never designed a Sailor Guardian of Earth. Earth still has a Sailor Crystal (The Golden Crystal is assumed to be it, iirc), it's just held by Mamoru instead of a woman.

I never knew that! That brings a whole new meaning to why Naoko didn't created a Sailor Earth or Sun but a Sailor Moon and made the moon special (on top of all the other mythological reasons to create a Sailor Moon). Also that could apply to why the characters that are influenced by the Earth and Sun, Mamoru and Helios, are men.

I just tend to go with Naoko's reasoning behind the reason as to why there isn't any Sailor Earth. She has stated that Mamoru is technically "Sailor Earth" but since only girls can be sailor senshi, he can't be one; even his name "Mamoru Chibi" is a playful pun of "Protector of Earth".

So we know that he carries the Golden Crystal, which is ultimately the Earth Starseed. I also think that this explanation goes a little further than was explained as well. We are all left to assume that everyone of the senshi is the first born and possibly, an only child. Each one of these was born with their particular planet's starseed. Anyone of the Moon lineage can have only one child as well (although I and I know many others disregard this rule for otaku senshi ^~). I believe there is an unspoken guideline in the series that only the first born has the capability to be born with that particular planet's starseed; male or female.

Since male characters are not allowed to become Sailor Senshi, male characters cannot use their starseeds to their full power unlike the first born females.

I think that maybe Earth could have a guardian.

Then I remembered that it is theorized that the Moon was made after an impact between Earth and a planetoid called Theia.

Maybe Earth's 'factor' (whatever allows a Senshi to come to be) ended up into the Moon.
