So I just ran into this "article" showing some of the 90's anime backgrounds and thought it was worth sharing (despite the fact that it's such lazy reporting that I'm putting it in quotes :p).


Man if those backgrounds didn't add so much to the atmosphere! The Sailor Moon Drops game has done a terrific job mimicking them for their main story maps.u It made me realize why looking at most merch in my collection doesn't quite take me back all the way to the series - the merch is bold, primary colors with no soft pastel brush strokes to offset them!

Does anyone have a favorite backdrop - either from the images in the article or another one they remember?

It's funny you make this thread when literally about 1 or 2 days ago I found this awesome tumblr full of screenshots focusing mostly on the scenery and backgrounds. It's an amazing resource! I think what makes the backgrounds so lovely is that the 90s anime was created before everything was done on computers so all these backgrounds and scenes are all hand painted. It really adds a bit more "oomph" to the backgrounds, if you ask me.

There's so many I don't think I have any favorties. Though it is really nice to just admire hte backgrounds because that is sometimes overlooked while you are watching the show itself. I love how they show the mood of the scene, plus all the play with lighting, color and perspective.

This one of the Makaiju Tree is particularly nice.




And the city scapes are always so romantic feeling.

Yeah I definitely love the romance of the cityscapes at night with all the bubbly lights. Those bubbles are the perfect way to make them look lively and yet dreamy at the same time.

Ugh and don't get me started on the interior! I wish I could recreate all of the girls' rooms for my Irwin dolls XD. And this one of the Tsukino residence is just so iconic to me somehow:

No matter what forces came to test Sailor Moon, at the end of the day, she was still Usagi - a teenaged girl living with her kind and loving family.

I think my favorite right now is actually Nephrite's lair though!
