Appearance: Esmeraude appears to be quite tall, standing at around 178 cm. Her hair is light green, wavy, and long, reaching to the back of her knees. Her eyes are brown. Like all other of the Black Moon Clan, she has the upside down black crescent moon symbol on her forehead. Esmeraude is mostly depicted in one outfit throughout the various Sailor Moon incarnations. It’s a black tight short dress that reaches to her thighs, decorated with three aquamarine jewels on the chest linked by white beads. The dress has a turtleneck but no sleeves. Instead, she wears gloves of the same color that reach all the way up to her upper arms. She also wears a white bracelet on one arm. In the 90s anime she is also always depicted with a red fan made of fur. Like the other Black Moon Clan members, she also wears the same earrings made of the Malefic Black Crystal in the form of black diamonds. Her stiletto boots are knee-length and are the same color as her outfit.

Personality: Esmeraude’s most dominant trait is her vanity. She cares a lot about her appearance and is very aware of her beauty. In the anime her vanity also manifests in the form of the Dark Henges that she puts all over Tokyo 20th century, which Saphir made for her, that is made in her image. She is also ambitious in two ways; the first, she wants to be the most successful and eventual leader of the Black Moon Clan and tying into that, by way of winning Prince Demande’s heart and eventually becoming his queen. Esmeraude is obsessed with Demande and covets him, which makes her jealous toward Neo Queen Serenity, who is the only one Demande seems to care for. She seems to get her amusement by watching others within the Black Moon Clan fail, perhaps because it could then lifts her own position up. Despite belonging to the same group, Esmeraude does not care for any other Black Moon Clan members beyond Prince Demande. She is rather arrogant to those whom she considers to be beneath her.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills:

• Her main weapon in the anime was a large, sharp-edged fan to attack and harm her enemies; which implies that she may be quite skilled and proficient in the martial art of tessenjitsu.
  
• She attacks by throwing dark energy balls, or by shooting bolts of dark energy. Presumably she possesses Dark Power coming from the Malefic Black Crystal.
  
• Dark Henges - Statues shaped like Esmeraude that she used to create the Dark Gate by placing them at the Negative Point. When placed at the Negative Point, the statues would grow with Dark Power and create the gate. Negative Points were plotted locations in 20th century Tokyo that contained small amounts of negative energy that could manifest a rather large amount of Dark Power if wedges, such as the Dark Henge, were driven to them. Wedges would absorb Dark Power from the 30th century and the amount of Dark Power absorbed would accumulate and make the wedge grow until it reached its peak. If a full set of wedges were driven into several Negative Points, a Dark Gate would open. To the naked eye, Negative Points were invisible, but a member of the Black Moon Clan would be able to locate one using their earrings. In addition, Negative Points were the alternative to using Crystal Points as part of the Black Moon Clan's plan to destroy Crystal Tokyo.
  
• Beast Hand - An ability she got from Wiseman/Death Phantom in the manga and musical. This power distorted the person's arms and hands, and gave them great strength and the ability to absorb a victim's energy through physical contact.
  

 
History: Not much is known about how Esmeraude joined the Black Moon Clan. Presumably, like the others, she grew discontent with Neo Queen Serenity’s utopia and participated in the revolt that caused them to be banished to Nemesis, where they met Wiseman and received the powers to travel through time and attempt to thwart Crystal Tokyo from ever being founded.

In the anime, she came in after Rubeus failed, happy to leave him to die in his ship. Her mission then was to set up Dark Henges all over the city that would eventually grow into Dark Gates. However, her efforts were constantly thwarted by the senshi.

Then her ambition, jealousy, and obsession with Demande led into her being manipulated by Wiseman, who offered her a crown and promised her great power. He told her that the crown would make her the queen of Nemesis. So blinded by her desire to be better than Neo Queen Serenity and winning Demande’s heart, Esmeraude took the crown, becoming Queen Esmeraude. However, it turned out Wiseman lied to her, because soon after she turned into a dragon, a mindless beast that then went on a rampage and attacked the Crystal Palace in Crystal Tokyo. She was eventually killed by Sailor Moon.

In the manga, Esmeraude first appeared in the future, after Sailor Moon had traveled there. She had two droids, Chiral and Achiral, trap Sailor Moon in an impenetrable Crystal. After that initial attack was foiled, she attemped to attack Chibiusa with the Beast Hand and was eventually killed by Tuxedo Mask.

Other Noteworthy Facts: Esmeraude appears to have a sweet tooth and loves cake in the 90s anime. In that incarnation, she also has a distinctive laugh, loud and booming, which Wiseman commented always gave him a headache.
 
Storyline Specific Information:
Phantoms: In this storyline, Esmeraude is the princess and ruler of planet Nemesis. She is guarded by four legendary soldiers; the sisters Koan, Berthier, Petz, and Calaveras. Her job is to protect the planet’s most prized possession, the Malefic Black Crystal. When a neighboring planet’s kingdom became rife with attacks from an uprising targeting Nemesis, the prince of that kingdom and Esmeraude arranged a political marriage in an attempt to defuse the situation.

In this storyline Esmeraude is still somewhat vain—she knows she is beautiful, and anyone who dares to insinuate otherwise will receive her ire—but she is not nearly as ruthless or ambitious as her canon self. She is a good ruler and is extremely close to her guardians; she relies on their support and friendship and trusts them with her life. They are her advisors of sorts. At first she is impressed and flattered by Demande upon seeing him, but once she realizes he thinks she’s unfit to rule by his side and remains cold, he will quickly lose her good side.

Esmeraude was a princess, and like most other princesses, she once daydreamed of finding her prince. However, as she grew up, she soon had to face the reality of what being a princess truly meant, and that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be in fairy tales. It wasn’t all about knights in shining armor and falling in love at first sight or being swept off her feet by a prince.

It was about politics.

And now her once daydreamed fairy tale of finding a prince on a white horse had turned into an arranged marriage for politics. An arranged marriage for the good of her planet, to quell this uprising, to maintain peace and protect Nemesis.

To say that she was not disappointed would be a lie.

But Esmeraude was a ruler, and to be a good ruler she needed to put her people first. Besides, maybe this Prince Demande wouldn’t be that bad. Certainly she shouldn’t judge him before she got to know him. She owed him that much at least. Not all arranged marriages had to end up being a loveless prison, right? Perhaps… if he was a good person… they could grow to like each other.

And maybe even love each other, too.

After all, she was beautiful. Her father once said, No one could not love you, Esmeraude, for you are simply too beautiful not to be loved.

She had believed in those words since, even long after he was gone.

She knew she shouldn’t be nurturing the hope that love would blossom between her and Demande if she didn’t want to be disappointed, but she couldn’t help it.

Deep down, she was still a little princess.
