Pennsylvania Language and Speaking Quirks 1338047cf5fa1049f8a50327bb797a6b

Pennsylvania has a lot of quirks, just like every other state. We do some thing and say some things that many people in other states do not. There's a lot of funny things that we do and I'm still continuing to learn them.

Words only Pennsylvanians use:
Philly: We are literally the only people who call Philadelphia, Philly.

PA: Pronounced pee-ay, we don't call Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, we call it PA.

Youse, Yinz, or you guys: A way of addressing groups of people.

Crick: A small stream.

Hoagie: We don't call the subs or submarine sandwiches in PA, we call them hoagies. Sadly, I forget sometimes that they are called subs in other places and I get confused and others are confused when I say I want a hoagie.

Jagoff: Used mainly in Pittsburgh, to say that someone is being generally stupid, inconsiderate, or inept.

Djeetyet: Meaning did you eat yet?

Dippy eggs: AKA eggs made over easy.

Wooder or Wader: Usually used to say water. It took me a long time to break free of saying water like this.

Down the shore: We use this to say we are going to the beach.

Slippy: Meaning slippery.

Weird sentence structures:
In PA we tend to do weird things with our sentences and our speech patterns. We tend to leave out our subject words when we are speaking at times.

Like we'll say, "Done work." just that, no subject.

The "tree instead of three" thing is common in western new york too. Growing up in PA, I can confirm all the above, though I'm not sure how many I do. I don't pronounce water or three odd though.

I grew up in PA till I was 14, I lived in Erie. I've met people with the sentence structure thing; my one friends mother was the biggest offender lol.

I also hear a lot of people cutting off their ts in words. Like kien instead of kitten and I hear Scranton pronounced without the t all the time.
