I haven't finished Crystal yet, I'm kind of behind. I haven't always 100% been happy with the animation and I know its deviated from the manga, but even if it was following the manga, for someone who hasn't read it, I was really enjoying the episodes.

I swear I typed and posted this, but it's not showing up... maybe I closed the window prematurely?

So I do want to start by asking if there is anyone else who enjoys the Crystal Mamoru? I find him so much more likable in this series (and in the manga).

I actually don't like Mamoru but I must admit compared to his 90s counterpart, I prefer this version. I do like that he is younger and closer to Usagi in age which makes it a bit less creepy for me.

I think Usagi and Mamoru share some cute moments, but I kinda of miss making fun of his outfits, lol. He dresses better in this version.

I still haven't watched episode 13 yet, since my internet is shaky right now, but this weekend I'll get around to it.

I actually like Mamoru more when he's not oblivious to being Tuxedo Mask. He has his own little agenda and happened to cross paths with Sailor Moon that first night in Naru's shop, an I found that a little more interesting than him just deciding to go save her.

And yeah, the age thing is nice too. It makes a lot more sense than him being college age.

I think he's somewhere between 16 and 17.

Yeah, the age difference in the original anime is ... a bit frightening. I like that he's softer in Crystal though, and sweeter.

Bahaha, Venus that bit about his outfits made me actually laugh. Oh how style has changed, haha.
He's in high school, so yeah, 16 or 17. I do feel that everyone looks more grown up though.

I think probably 16 or 17 he feels like he's in his last year or two of highschool. I know he is in high school which is a fact I do like.

I love that he dresses better in Crystal and I have to agree with JTC I did like him better before he got involved with Usagi but I'm also majorly behind so.

And I like the fact that he's less superhero and more thief who sweeps in and out as he pleases. He's just a guy in a tux standing next to people who can toss around elements, but he'll still throw himself in there for Usagi, like when he went ahead and punched Zoisite XD. In the end he didn't do much at all, but he still tried, even if he didn't have roses as weapons or his cane to attack with.

I liked the scene with the two of them in the park, where they promised to trade things next time. 

I do wish they gave him some sort of attack or at least had him fight with his cane, though. Maybe that's to come!

I will raise my hand at the Mamoru question. I definitely prefer the Crystal version of him. He's kinder, more human. I always had an issue with how the old anime portrayed him... While rewatching the series last year I remember I kept thinking "How is it okay for this older dude to bully this young girl he just ran into on the street?". His actions before having warmed up to Usagi don't speak highly of him at all. 

But I did like their love-hate relationship in the old anime. The set-up was almost creepy, but the relationship itself had more substance. Or maybe I'm just a child of the '90s and thus a sucker for this sort of thing.

I liked the love-hate relationship too from the 90's (and it's great for fan fic writing, haha), but he was a jerk with no real reason - and from the start! I'm rewatching the 90's one now, and I was actually really surprised by how mean he came across at first.

More human is definitely a good way to describe him! And I can see why she would like him from the start now, haha.

i have to agree with you- i enjoyed poking fun at Mamoru in 90s.

I love Mamoru and 90s Mamo will always hold a place in my heart, but I much prefer Crystal Mamo- he stil teases Usagi- but hes not a complete jerk to her.

I also love Motoki (even though we see so little of him) i had assumed that he and Mamo were friends though, it didnt seem like that in Crystal, well except for when he was Endo.

If he wasn't in college, the dynamic between Mamoru and Usagi in the 90s anime would have worked even better. The age thing caused the most problems, really. I could have better accepted a high school kid teasing a middle school girl more than a college guy, because it was only like a 2-3 year gap at most, and neither of them were really supposed to be "mature" yet. If he's in college, he just looks like a rude adult. XD

The age thing isn't the problem. Once Usagi is older, it wouldn't be an issue, but due to her initial age of 14 in the 90s it was kind of creepy lol

I agree with you, JupiterThunderCrash. I'm aware that some people don't care about age differences in couples, but to me they do matter. And in this case, Mamoru often acts his age, with Usagi often acting her own age. In the '90s anime it often feels like Mamoru is Usagi's legal guardian rather than her lover.

When we still didn't have details about the Crystal characters, there was a rumor in a SMF thread, that Mamoru was going to be college-aged again. I'm happy that Toei kept his age the same as in the manga... this way they're a more plausible couple.

Aha! I have found you, Sailor Moon Crystal admirers! There is no place you can call safe from the criticisms and badgering of Sailor CJ! Prepare for invasion!
 
In all seriousness, there are actually things I like about Sailor Moon Crystal, believe it or not. Episode 5 in general was a fantastic one and I practically gushed over it. I really liked the way they handled it.
 
The soundtrack is also brilliant. Seriously, go check it out. Actually, the entire show is great in its sound. I don't even need to say how glorious [insert voice actress here because I'm at work and can't look it up quick enough] is in her return as the pretty soldier in a sailor suit. And Sailor Jupiter is voiced by the same woman who brought us Ryuko from Kill la Kill? *swoon*

@ Addelyn: I get that. XD It wasn't the gap itself, it was that the gap was right between child and adult that made it not work so well, since the series took place around those years.

@ Sailor CJ: I second the music and voices, Makoto's was pretty much perfect to me when I heard her in Episode 5. I'm like "please talk more!" XD

Yeah I really like Mako's voice actor. I love how distinct her voice is.

And I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WHO REALLY REALLY LIKES THE TRANSFORMATIONS!?!?!?! Everyone hates them but I love them.  Sailor Mar's and Moon's transformation themes are really nice as well.

I guess I'm in the minority because I really liked jerky Mamoru? I mean I liked manga Mamoru as well but I jerky Mamoru is hilarious to me.

You know what no one talks about anymore that I think is hte best part of Crystal. MOON PRIDE. AND MOMOCLO. AND THE OPENING. Those are the parts I look forward too the most every episoe. <3

I actually don't like the music of Moon Pride . I like the lyrics and I love the video but the music... a bit too "anime" for me, if that makes sense. But I love the background music for Crystal! The '90s anime had very few OST tunes that I would listen to outside of watching the anime, but with this one I pre-ordered the CD as soon as it went up. Sadly it's still on the way here, but that's what you get when you live in TheMiddleOfNowhereLand

I love the transformation music, especially Mars. Sailor Moon and Mercury had more light, orchestral themes, and then Mars just went "No, I can do better!" and decided she needed electric guitars and intense drums. XD

I really do like the voice actors as well. It took me awhile to get used to Artemis's voice actor. I was like woah!! That is one deep voice for a cat!!
