| Does the human body contain so many magical items for monsters, formless evil beings, and dark queens to consume. Heart Crystals, Dream Mirrors, Star Seeds. Heck, even simple human energy is a delicacy for the evil beings in this series. Can a monster attack a single civilian that the Senshi have made friends with for that single episode. Anyone else wanna point things like these out too? And I've also realized that the villains never seem to launch an attack on the city, or people during school hours every single time! It's like, evil somehow gives a crap that they're in school. :lolz: |

They're also nice and considerate in that they attack Tokyo directly, rather than, say, England or something. ((which, actually, I think might've been behind-the-scenes happening in the Dark Kingdom arc, where you had her commander of the Far East attacking Japan first (Jadeite) and then the others (Commander of the West, Nephrite, then North, Zoisite, etc.) coming in to take over from him when he hit resistance in Tokyo. ...which makes me wonder what was going on in different nations at that time if Nephrite had succeeded enough that he took over for Jadeite when Jadeite failed. o_o so many possessed objects floating around Canada and the US, eh? BUT ANYWAY)) |

That's what always annoys me. It's not like the Senshi can sense when danger is about to strike, they are always in the right place at the right time, ever since Nephrite took over. At least with Jadeite's plots, it involved attacking a large group, so it was a wider net for the Senshi to fall into. But attacking single civilians and Senshi immediately being there by coincidence can be unbelievable. |

| Oh fun thread. Only in Sailor Moon do giant hearts destroy enemies! Also I think this would do best outside of the Anime section into the General on just so we can cover all the canons. So I'm going to move it. And to further my point: only in PGSM can a plushie get turned into a human catgirl. o.O Mod Note: if you would rather it stay strictly anime i can always move it back, just let me know! ^^; |

| Only in Sailor Moon do short skirts stay in place, even when running or jumping, or high winds.
Only in Sailor Moon will enemies stay still long enough to let the hero get out a monologue. |

| How about episodic amnesia.
Only in Sailor Moon does a villain come close to figuring out who she is by actually comparing her to her civilian form, only to forget about it next episode. I'm talking about episode 37, where Kunzite actually sees how clumsy, and immature Usagi is (with a skill in Frisbee), and comparing it to Sailor Moon. Then next episodes, he gives up on suspecting Usagi, and then tries to set up traps, suspecting Sailor Moon to be talented at skiing and ice skating.
In somewhat conjunction with this, first episode of the Black Moon Arc Chibiusa shows up and immediately and without a doubt knows Usagi having the Silver Crystal upon hearing Usagi's name, and makes Usagi's day unbearable in her search for it. Then the next episode, Chibiusa has no idea where the Silver Crystal could be. (This case is a little weaker than the last one, but you get the point) |

| Also it is kind of nice how the villains and everyone in the silver millenium speak Japanese. Also you can run around town with pink hair, blue hair, green hair, and hair up to your knees and people won't look at you in an awkward way. |

Was just thinking that the other day! Most of their classmates, if not all, and even the people in the background all have traditional hair colors and hair length but what a coincidence all of the Sailor Senshi have different hair colors! lol Only in Sailor Moon can a villian NOT know who the hero is even though they don't wear a mask. |

I just assumed that there is a passive power to their Sailor uniforms that causes some kind of glamour that prevents civilians and villains from making a connection between them and their civilian identities based off of appearance alone. But that's just an assumption to a major plot hole. |

As far as the language thing goes, I presume that the villains used magic to teach themselves how to read, write, and speak the native languages of the countries they were assigned to work in, if they didn't know some of them already. I mean in the beginning they were just gathering human energy, and doing that in large scale required plans and deceptions. Things like that require the antagonist to be able to communicate effectively with their intended targets. As for the hair color thing, I just pass that off as "normal in this universe", since it's so typical in anime. |

| Only in sailor moon some villains are nice enough to wait for their attacks to power up. Also I noticed that their transformation pens, sceptres, and communicators are always at their disposal. Also the safest place to transform is the top of a hill. (Rei's temple) Only in sailor moon do supreme sailor stars think that the best way to find their lost princess is to become popstars and flirt with girls. |

Lol. But to be fair, I CAN see some logic in the plan. I mean the Earth is a big place, or even just Japan (and heavily populated). And they may not have had a good way to track her. The idea to use radio communication to subtly send a coded message to her, in the hopes she'd here it doesn't seem that bad. I mean it gets their message out to a large area, and eventually she has to hear it and realize it's for her. And I suppose, considering the lyrics, they thought posing as a band of all men would be more normal than if they did it as women. See what I mean? |

Seriously, Luna? Haha! I just recently defended that to my husband: If you are operating under the assumption that the princess is well, a princess, and does not fight, because princesses have princes, and guardians, and armies for that kinda stuff. Then the logic just follows that her bodyguard is going to be named basically 'moon guardian' or 'moon solder' whichever translation you prefer. Things get screwy when V shows up and they are all like, OMG shes the princess, and she's fighting just like us! They didn't really get a chance to sit that one down and figure out, hey we are still missing a planet guardian, here and she was called Sailor V... There is this planet that starts with V... But then moon turds hits the fan and Mamo-chan goes and gets himself killed again, by usagi, or however, whatever version you are watching goes... and the plot thickens with her reveal. I feel like if they had all sat down and had some tea, and pondered out their own FREAKING NAMES! They would have come to this conclusion on their own. I mean her name is freaking Rabbit of the MOON! - Spoiler:
Japanese Name | Meaning of Name | | Tsukino Usagi | Rabbit on the Moon | | Mizuno Ami | Friend of Water | | Hino Rei | Spirit/Beauty of Fire | | Kino Makoto | Sincerety of Wood | | Aino Minako | Beautiful Child of Love | | Chiba Mamoru | Defender of Earth | | Tenoh Haruka | Distant Sky/Heaven Ruler | | Kaioh Michiru | Full/mature/to rise Sea Ruler | | Meioh Setsuna | Instant/Moment Dark Ruler | | Tomoe Hotaru | Earth Sprouting Firefly | | Chibi-usa | Little Rabbit | |
I took out their North American names because they are unspeakable.
You know what they really all needed, a Greek Mythology lesson. Then they might have caught on quicker that they were all living a freaking Greek fairy tale... |

| Those aren't -really- their name meanings. Tsukino Usagi is identical to the common phrase "tsuki no usagi" used to talk about the rabbit of the moon--but it's word play, not a literal translation.
However, all of the surnames that end in "no" use the kanji "野" which is not the particle "no" as in "of," but instead a very common kanji used in surnames and place names that means "field." So her name is really "Moon Field Rabbit" in literal translation based on the kanji provided. (And using the assumption that "usagi" is definitely intended as "rabbit", which we know because Naoko Takeuchi has made that pretty clear.)
"Ami" does not mean "friend." It's comprised of the kanji "亜" for "Asia" and "美" for "beauty". So "Water Field Asia Beauty."
"Rei" spells her name with katakana, so it doesn't actually have a "meaning" so to speak. There are also a ton of Japanese words that are pronounced "rei." "Makoto," "Haruka," "Michiru," and "Setsuna" as names could be a pronunciation of TONS of kanji, but since they all use hiragana there's no way to hone in on the most intended meanings. "Hotaru" is probably "firefly" in the same way that "Usagi" is "rabbit", even though both use hiragana, because "firefly" and "rabbit" are such common words.
"Minako" does contain the kanji for "beauty" and "child," but it's also a really silly pun in that "美奈子" as a female name can sometimes have the rare alter pronunciation of "bi-nasu" OH HO HO HO I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.
"Chiba" is made up of "地" for "earth/ground" and "場" for "place." His first name uses the kanji "衛" which means "defense/protection." His name 'translation' from the chart found above is probably closest, but it's still kind of awkward to directly translate their names.
"Chibi Usa" is actually named "Usagi" and it's more appropriate to translate "chibi" as "runt" than "little." It's actually a word with negative connotion in several contexts--it can be used as definitely-not-positive slang term for someone with dwarfism. Thankfully in Sailor Moon it's just being used to tease her for being short and young.
What is most significant as far as the surnames of the sailor soldiers is that each surname uses the same kanji as their planet name. "Mizuno" is "水野" and "Mercury" as "suisei" is "水星". "Tenou" is "天王" and "Uranus" as "tenousei" is "天王星". Hotaru is the only odd one, since her surname "Tomoe" is "土萠" and Saturn as "dosei" is "土星". (I guess Naoko Takeuchi didn't like the available pronunciations or connotations for "土" as a surname? "Do Hotaru" would fit with "Tenou Haruka," "Kaiou Michiru," and "Meiou Setsuna," but it is weird-sounding.)
More than that, it doesn't seem to be common in Japan for people to analyze the meaning of the kanji used for someone's name without a specific purpose in mind (such as avoiding giving your future child an inauspicious name), even evil villains looking to find Sailor Soldiers. XD
Sorry for derailing; the misinformation surrounding "name translations" is a pet peeve of mine. Hope this was interesting to someone. XD |

| Wow, that was very interesting.
I did know that the 'no' in the last names was a play on words and not actual translation, so I was just being snarky there, but the rest, I just remember being fascinated by their names when I was a kid, I love symbology and stuff like that so it was one of the first things I was really into about the show, also trying to learn Kanji for long time back in the day, utter fail obviously.
Before I posted this I had not thought about their names in a long time, so I just did a quick google search for the chart. Sorry if it is wildly inaccurate, I completely understand pet peeves, so, gomen nasai! |

There is still lots of pervasive misinformation about names and naming that originated in the 90s and circles around the internet to this day. I really appreciate detailed analysis of the series, so I wanted to share a counterpoint. The chart you found is really, really common. It's also basically wrong.

You'd think that after five attacks from a store with special discount, the Senshi would learn. Only in Sailor Moon does it seem like the Senshi and the bad guys seem to be on the same wavelength. For example, the Senshi talk about figure-skating, next thing you see, the bad guys set up a trap at a figure-skating rink. Usagi is making curry, she goes to the one grocery store that the bad guys have set up there. |
