PostSubject: Hiii.   Hiii. I_icon_minitime31st August 2011, 10:50 pm

Thanks to tumblr, I found this rad forum. Why is it rad? I don't have friends that are into Sailor Moon, and it is considerably less fun to ramble to someone who doesn't get excited. I originally became interested in Sailor Moon when it was on Toonami on Cartoon Network. I RP'd on Neopets and I had a terrible OC. (So basically, I was a typical middle school kid.) It went off the air and I lost interest, and then I sort of stopped being interested in anime as I got sick of some of the fandoms. On a whim, I looked through some old sketchbooks this summer and sort of felt nostalgic when I saw my crappy fan characters that I used to love so much. I never got to watch Stars, so I started to watch it online. Hello addiction! I've missed you so.

Anyway. I am Roo or Julia, and I don't care which you call me. I'm 23 and usually can't remember how old I am. For real. Putting my age on things almost always brings up a tiny bubble of panic for a few seconds until I remember. I'm entering my last year of college as an Asian art history major with an emphasis in Chinese art. I can speak a bit of Chinese, but it's not really passable; the people at a Chinese food restaurant where I lived this summer were super nice when I butchered sentences. Aww yeah. Post-graduation, I intend to travel to China for a year or so to study the language so I can get into the grad school I want. I need Chinese (and need to read traditional, too...) and German. Asian art history, y u so hard? I adore China and Chinese culture, and I can get a little prickly when someone says offensive things about China or Asian cultures in general. I went to China a year ago and it was amazing. I can't wait to go again!

I peaced out of the RPing scene about six months ago because internet drama burns me out and most of the people I RP'd with were jerks, or the sites I tried were elitist and cliquey. So... I probably won't be interested in RPing simply because I really have no desire to rejoin something that stressed me out so badly. (Plus with school coming, I'd feel bad making people wait a month for a post that is totally not worth that kind of wait.) However, character creation is like nutella laced with crack for me, and so I am an avid creator of otaku senshi. I'm currently charging through writing a fanfiction series and have notes for another. Once I slow down with writing a bit, I want to draw characters. My favorite otaku senshi back in the day were the Crystal Stars made by Crystalfyre. She took her site offline sometime when I was in high school and it still makes me sad all these years later. I also love drawing (I am technically an art major, just the nerdy kind), so I do plan on drawing my characters once I slow down with writing a bit. I love otaku senshi and I love reading fanfiction around them; people are so creative it blows me away. Love it.

Outside of a few anime series and my major, I love music, Disney, and historical movies. I am That Person that stays up until 3am because Saving Private Ryan shows up on TNT right before I go to bed. I also love kpop and Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, and I play Minecraft. I'm a recovering WoW addict, but honestly, if I had the money I'd probably still be playing. I'm prone to bursts of capslock silliness. I can't believe I wrote this much about myself, either.

I also like cats. A lot.

I think it's definitely safe to say you'll love it here. Very Happy

It sounds like you've definitely got quite a bit going for you school and art-wise, so I wish you the best of luck with it! I don't know much about the Chinese language, but I'd imagine it would be just as difficult as the Japanese (I've heard it has three sets of characters, practically all different sub-languages ... for me, that'd be insanely difficult, XD). I am curious, though - What was it like in China, where you went? ^^

It really is a shame that you've stopped RPing altogether, though. I guess you still haven't really met the right people to do it with? I'm sorry to hear that your past RP partners only stressed you out when it was supposed to be fun, Roo.

The Crystal Stars do seem like an interesting group, although I never got the chance to learn much about them. I've read an article that one website put up on their makings and what they're up to now, but that was a few months ago. And if I can ask, what's your fanfiction about? (And do you plan on posting any of your OCs in the supplied board?)

Also - Yay, another animal lover. Very Happy

All in all, it's nice to meet you, Roo. ^_^

@Galaxia - Thank you for the welcome! I think I will really like it here, too. x3

@SeleneHime - Aiyaaa, Japanese! It really does sound difficult. I may have to study it in grad school, and I am not looking forward to it. Levels of respect and three different character sets, holy pewp. Are you studying it or do you plan on studying it? The Chinese are just like "Okay, just don't call your mom a horse and you will be JUST FINE!" The hardest part is mastering the tones, which is the easiest way to tell someone is not a native speaker by phone, which is a big deal because the Chinese still don't fully trust foreigners after events just before and at the turn of the 1900s. My adviser shocks people by phone because she has a Chinese name that is not a transliteration of her English name, and her Chinese is beautiful. So sometimes she shows up at archaeological sites and they're like o.o. Haha. I've heard if you pick up Japanese easily, though, Korean is a breeze, which is pretty neat. China was awesome while I was there. It's sort of amusing (more so in the south) because some people don't see Caucasians regularly, so a whole group of us was a spectacle. We were less interesting in Xi'an and especially Beijing, but in Wuhan in the south, we had a group of elementary school-aged kids line up in front of our group so their teachers could take pictures. LOL. The actual people are extremely friendly. Because the different Chinese dialects are almost like different languages, they're really used to having to figure out what people are saying. So if I tried to talk to someone and did a terrible job, they were extremely patient. Just lovely people. <33 It's also a history nerd's dream, since their history is so long and rich and you will never see all of it. Waagh. I could gush forever.

Yeah, it's a shame I just can't RP anymore. Sad Every time I think it might be fun, I'm stopped by the fact that I managed to pick the worst RP partners, save a few, and those people don't RP anymore for basically the same reason as me. Maybe I will someday, but that someday will probably not come during first semester. Yaaay thesis! 8D

My fanfic series is about a group of four senshi who act like a barrier between the very outer reaches of the solar system, sort of like another layer of protection beyond the Outers. They either stop a threat before it hits the system at all, or they warn the Outers of an impending threat that will slip through. On the moon itself, they're like gatekeepers. There's one for each cardinal direction, and they're each attached to an element. I do plan on posting their profiles on the otaku senshi board, but I have to finish them. I have profile skeletons down, but they need some fleshing out in terms of specifics, like some of their powers that aren't related to their senshi attacks. I am thorough and obsessive. >.>

Thank you for the welcome. <3 I talk a loooot!

XD, well, I'm not currently studying it. I'm not sure if I will, but I'm considering it. Hehe, really? Sounds like Chinese is pretty relaxed as a language, when compared. That is kind of surprising, though. It can take quite a while to get an accent down when it's not your native language, from what I've seen.
Sounds like you had a great time while you were there, lolz. It sounds really cute that all the elementary kids wanted a picture, too. ^^
And I know how you feel. I love history and mythology, so China's branch in the world is extremely extensive and thorough.

Mmm ... Well, if you ever wanted to give it a shot again (after that thesis, XD), we could try it together. XD, I prefer to use OCs rather than canon characters, though, because of a bit of a perfectionist fear of misusing a character's personality. *Sweatdrop.*

That does sound really interesting, though. Are you far along in that story yet?

*Wry smile.* Well, then, that makes two of us. The OC that I'm working on right now, Sailor Sidus, has a profile of 5000 words and counting. I still have to do two major parts of her profile, too. >_>

*Huggles.* No problem~. Very Happy

You should definitely go for Japanese. Some people are wired for it and they pick it up really quickly, and if that's the case, Korean will come pretty easily. I just know I'm not, so it makes me nervous when I think I may have to learn it. xD

I am the same way about canon characters. I RP'd with someone when I was in early high school who played the most perfect Sailor Uranus ever. She was incredible. I really envy people who are like that and I'm sort of worried about writing the canon characters in my fic. Going to have to rewatch all of Sailor Moon to make sure I get it right. >.> Yes. Oh how horrible. *giggle*

I'm not too far along in the story. I have notes down for things that will happen later in the series because that age-forgetting thing kind of bleeds into forgetting everything. Very Happy But I have full simple outlines for the first six chapters or so, and the prologue is done. I'm only a few paragraphs into the first chapter, but it'll be longer. I'm sort of writing them like episodes, so they're not enormous, but they're long enough. The prologue ended up being 11 or 12 pages single spaced, and I need to add a bit to it yet. So... yep. Not really long. ^^

WOAH that's a long profile! :O Lots of work! I'll bet it's great, though. Mine are a little more utilitarian right now. Lists and random notes and what have you. They need some cleaning!

Well, I'm not too great at foreign languages, unfortunately. Kinda half deaf, so getting pronounciations right is a pain.

That is really nice for people who can do the canon characters so accurately, though. But I know how you feel oh so much. *Pats.* Heh, oh yes. Razz

Well, notes are always good. Sometimes small details that are still important slip my mind (which is frustrating since I have about fifty different story/novel/fan-novel ideas at once), so I've gotten fond of those outlines. But that's actually pretty long for a prologue. Those are generally one to three pages at maximum in published works. But then, I suppose my chapter lengths are pretty short in comparison. Six to eight pages on average, so they can be read in one sitting and still have plenty of material.

Hehe, yeah. "Sidus" is actually Latin for "Star", so I'm putting extra work into making her unique. To be honest she started as a cliche test to see how well I could do the archetype, but she developed so much she's going to get her own fan-novel. I'm actually writing out a potential chapter for later in her story right now. (Fastest I've written in a year, too. Five pages in one day. I think my writer's block is finally gone. ^^)

Well, I'm sure they'll look nice once you're done. I can't wait to read about them. ^^

@SeleneHime - Aww, yeah, that would make things difficult. Sad I was a music ed major for two years and I am an art major, so hearing tones and learning characters comes to me easier than other people. Doesn't mean it's easy, but still. xD

o.o I had no idea that's how much people wrote. I guess I just had a lot to cover (and still do, to some extent). I really wanted it to be clear who these people were and why they fit into this universe, and why this whole thing was even starting. I said I was obsessive right? ._.;;

Ooh, I like Sidus. Very Happy The fanfic I have in my brain involves two senshi with Latin names, but nothing will come of that for quite some time. Latin is nifty. I can't wait to read it when you have it done. <3 Love love love reading.

@NauticalNeptune - Thank you! <3 Everyone here seems so nice!

Yeah. Not to mention if you don't use the language, you lose it. I took two years of Spanish to graduate highschool, and I only remember bits and pieces of it now.

Well, yes ... But sometimes it is better, in retrospect, to not info dump over one huge chapter. Baiting your readers may sound cruel, but if you keep supplying questions and answering them over time, it'll keep people interested. ^^

Hehe, thank you. ^^ Yeah, it is. I especially like one particular translator for Latin, too. http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=English&to=Latin

Oh, thank you. I'll be posting a potential chapter in a bit for the story, but it's not at the beginning. It's a few months after Akira becomes Sailor Sidus. *Huggles appreciatively.*

@SeleneHime - Quite true. There's still some that's left out, but... a lot of it I deem as sort of necessary to understand. Plus, I think the normal chapters will be shorter. xD; Or at least I hope so. omg. And thank you for the translator! That will be very useful. *bookmarks*

@Nautical Neptune - I am sort of lucky in the regard that I'm naturally good at dictation. Half the time I can wing it and still be okay. I can hear intervals pretty well, but sometimes I get lost as to which note I'm actually hearing. Damn those singy folks for being able to pick a note out of thin air. xD What do you do now?

Yeahh...I thought I was getting better at it..Until I got to Ear Training II, then I was like...Oh crap and barely somehow passed with a C. And since Music sucked up a lot of time and courses, I am currently just doing my core courses since I have not done many yet, and then I will figure out what to do from there. I am thinking either Business or Nursing but I do not know. I am a writer, and being a writer is hard to..well, become a writer. I write songs (and stories) ^_^

Well, I'll see when you're ready to post it. ^^

You're very welcome, Roo. *Huggles.* I'm using that translator to name every single one of Sailor Sidus' attacks, too. (XD, keeping up with the Latin theme, and the fact that her original incarnation was at the start of the universe. I have one of her three most important lives written up in the Senshi History so far. ^_^")

Yes, feedback would be good, just in case I got a little overzealous. Not that I never do that. >.>; Ever.

Latin names for attacks would be cool! I'm not sure what to do about the two in my head. We'll see. :O

I do have skype! I think my screen name is giraffical. If you look it up and see someone named Julia, that's me. If you look at up and it's not there, then I'm wrong and I'll have to actually check. c_c;

Hehe, feedback is an author's bread and butter anyway. *Pats.*

Thanks! And she has four to five attacks for each form, and she has four forms. Being she's a solo senshi, she has to have a wide arsenal. (Her world is also an Alternate Reality, in which Sailor Moon's legacy doesn't start until after most of Akira's legacy as Sailor Sidus has taken root. She only meets Usagi once, and that'll be near the end of her fan-novel. Usagi runs into her, lolz.)

Ah, can you try to add me? I looked for you, but nothing showed up. My screen name is Moonlight-Zelda.

Oh. My. Gosh. You are just beyond fantastic. I just about squee'd myself when I saw that you are an Art History major in ASIAN ART. My BA was also in Art History! I have never met a fellow Art History major before. And I adore Asian art as well, although my focus is more on contemporary Asian art. BUT STILL. And I can tell that you like to write a lot as well, which is just like me. Razz

Welcome, indeed! Very Happy I am not a huge HP fan (I did not read the books) but I am very much into the Marauders and all that. Also, I adored the last two films so much. What is it about HP that you like?

And yah, I grew up with Sailor Moon on Toonami as well. Not a fan of the dub, but I do miss Toonami terribly. I thought it was just fantastic. Hee. Wink

Oh, and I can never remember my age either. It is quite pathetic. I was having a conversation with my Dad the other day and was stating my age until I realized that I was off by a year. XD It is kind of ridiculous, especially when you have to state your age to some one in school and you are trying to show that you are an intelligent life form and yet you can not remember your age without taking a moment to calculate it in your head.

Anyway, I am very excited to meet you, Julia. Smile What is your tumblr?

@SeleneHime - Usagi is good at that sort of thing. >.>; I'll add you to skype once it boots up. It usually starts and then shuts off a few times on its own before it decides it would like to stay online. Special.

@Sailor Jupiter - OMFG HIII. I've just been studying some contemporary Chinese art in school. I just had a class that was Qing Dynasty to 1950, and then second semester this year, the same professor is running a 1950-present Chinese art class that will compliment an event we're hosting. We're having Xu Bing visit campus with some of his art. I don't think we have an official list of works yet, but it will involve square word calligraphy. Not sure if you've heard of him or his work, but... you are the only person I know outside of school who knows anything about contemporary Asian art. O.O; WHOO. This makes me so excited!

Oh man, the worst is when someone asks you your age in another language. First you have to remember numbers in another language, and THEN you have to figure out how old you are. I wish "older than you" would be a sufficient answer, since I end up being older than everyone in my classes. Sort of hard to seem like you have a brain when your age slips your mind. c_c We're gettin' old I tell you.

Edit: Oh! My tumblr is feidaiyun. It's not that interesting. xD

I know how you feel about your age, that feeling where someone asks you how old you are, and you have to think about it for a second. I think I'm coping okay with "adulthood," but for some reason I've been so focused on how close I am to thirty that I keep forgetting I'm not thirty.

I love Game of Thrones too! I started reading the books about halfway through the first season of the show, and am currently trying to distract myself from reading the fifth book too quickly. That series is amazing.

I played Minecraft for a few weeks, but every time I'd finish a project and start a new one without thinking my brain would start yelling "What are you doing??"

...So I went back to The Sims 3. xD

You are right, I do not know of Xu Bing but I am always looking for new artists to learn about! Thank you for telling me about him. I cannot believe that you are going to MEET him! That is so fantastic. Calligraphy is such a beautiful artform as well. Please update me on all the details when you know! Very Happy

This is so exciting. Here are some contemporary asian artists that I am quite enthralled with. Not all of their work is a direct reflection of historical asian art but there is something about contemporary asian art that has that certain off-settling voice in their work. I adore it so much.

- Fay Ku -- she works with graphite a lot of splotches of color. She really like open white space and her subject matter can be a bit disturbing at times, which I love.
- Dan-ah Kim -- delicate drawings with mixed media. I really like the faceless girls, so silent, mixed with the abundant textures and/or scenery.
- Travis Louie -- oh my gosh, the man is a freaking god. His work is not related to history asian art per se though.
- Yuko Someya -- Has a bit more of that traditional feel.
- Minchi -- a favorite of mine, although no one seems to know about her very well.
- Kazuki Takamatsu -- Very strange but really amazing.

There are so many others but I should control myself so I do not bother you with it all. Razz There is one in particular who I really want to include but I can not remember her name. Hiii. 2276801876

XD Oh my gosh, the horror of it all! lol. Nothing worse than having to do math in another language. And chinese is so hard. Absolutely beautiful, but hard. My interest is more towards Japan and Korea. I visited Japan last year and my mfa program is doing an art exchange with a Korean school at the end of the year. SO. EXCITED.

And you are not old!!!! Although, I'll be honest, it feels that way sometimes when you are surrounded by all these -teens! Razz

@Plum - Game of Thrones is excellent. I zipped through Dance even though I wanted to take my time. It's so brilliant. <3 My best friend got me into reading ASOIF but hasn't read Dance yet, and so it was agonizing reading that book and not having her to listen to me gush. I just love it! And I love watching the tumblr reactions of people who are just starting to read/watch the series, because some of them are so hilarious. Have you seen boohoonedstark on tumblr?

@NauticalNeptune - Yay, I saw! I watched you back. x3 My skype name must be wrong, then. Neutral Try livefromvacationland? That's another screen name I use pretty often.

@Sailor Jupiter - Ooh, thanks for the artists! I will definitely check them out. I don't know a whole lot about Korean and Japanese artists, so I love learning more. If you're interested in more Chinese artists, you should check out Cai Guoqiang on youtube. He does fireworks displays and gunpowder drawings. He's the guy who orchestrated the Beijing Olympics fireworks display. And OMFG art exchange. That would be SO neat! You'll have to keep us (or at least me >.>) updated about it.

I'm 23 and usually can't remember how old I am. For real. Putting my age on things almost always brings up a tiny bubble of panic for a few seconds until I remember.

You and me need to be BFFs for life. Srsly, just based off of these two things. Haha XD Oh and btw, It's cool you are studying an area of Art History that I felt was never touched in any of my classes. It was always about Western Art history. Bleh. Just graduated with a BFA in Visual Arts, so I kinda know where you are coming from. I am a bit of a fan with a lot of hte current Japanese contemporary artists, especially some of the more pop art ones.

ANyway, welcome to the forum! I think you'll fit in good. ^_^

My! So much has already been said and discussed in this thread! I'm glad to see you're already fitting in here so nicely, Roo.

For some reason, that statement felt a bit creepy, as if we're luring you into some false sense of security. Which we aren't. Honestly. Just ask one of our other subjects---er, members.

Welcome aboard! tongue

You are totally sitting there behind your computer screen, fingers twitching eagerly and your lips pulling back in cackling delight at so easily luring in a new moonie morsel.

we all are.

@Brit-chan - Um. BFF deal will only work if we get cool matching rings complete with superpowers. That's my offer. Take it or leave it. MATCHING RINGS OR NO DEAL. D:<

I'm so glad my school offers Asian art history. <3 Our school decided to get its East Asian Studies certificate, so they needed at least two professors in the area. We now have an Asian history teacher and an Asian art history teacher, the latter of which is my adviser. Very Happy So us having courses other than Western-anything is really new, too. I think it's starting to be a trend in schools. Really too bad yours didn't have it, though! Thank you for the welcome. <3

@Mercury and Jupiter - Um. Pls to not creepy. *shifty eyes*
