Subject: Miki's Ultimate Dub Challenge! 2nd December 2012, 4:06 pm
Last night I saw this:
"here comes sailor moon on her moon cycle yay!"
and so i got thinking... this year alone i've:
: rewatched the entire sailor moon anime : rewatched the entire liveaction series : rewatched every single recorded musical : reread the entire manga : replayed Another Story
but, i cant say ive watched the dub, in fact i havent seen it properly since childhood apart from a few clips and i dont think we ever got cloverway's dub in this country, so i basically have the following two memories:
"I'm afraid you'll get hu~u~u~u~u~u~u~urt" and "that's so sweet im getting cavities"
soooooooooooooooo... im starting a quest to watch the entire english dub due to that inspirational moon cycle commercial
this will be the thread where i discuss my journey through the dubbiness. so everyone use this thread to reminiscence the english dub as i past it and watch my commentary and comment with me. Hokay! Feel free to rewatch the english dub too.
(anyone have that youtube site with all the english dub secretly?)

how do you people hate this its so deliciously camp!
Though, o.o that opening sequence and the Moon Kingdom prelude... kind of ruined the entire first series o.o and also part of it is stolen from the Sailor Moon R opening sequence...
Also loving the epic zoom transitions and uneccessary grunting. Its just so amazingly unnecessary thats it becomes fun
and also:
SYNTHESIZERS! SYNTHESIZES EVERYWHERE! SYNTHESIZE ALL THE THINGS!
I actually pretty well enjoyed it XD Its just so much fun. Not quite the same as the Japanese but its still enjoyable I think, dont see what all the hates about though =\
Also:
"RHINESTONES!? I LOVE THOSE!" "I SHALL RETURN!!!!" <--- no you won't Morga o.o "PURPLE AAAAAND PINK!" "So much greeeed"
I really enjoyed giving Ikuko and Queen Serenity the same voice though, nice touch.

"That's so sweet I'm getting cavities" is probably my favorite dub quote ever <3 There are quite a few episodes that I watch in Japanese where I can still clearly hear the English dub version in my head xD
I look forward to reading more about your adventures!

same voice or just same voice actress?
If its the former then there goes the nice touch XD
yami totally do a rewatch so we can discuss it together
It's basically the same voice hahaha she doesn't really do anything different that I've noticed, I love her though, as Neptune, Ikuko, or Queen Serenity hehe

This makes me want to rewatch the dub too, though its hard. Its almost TOO campy at times, mostly with all the unnecessary slang (i mean, half the words they come up i don't think was in my slang vocabulary at the time...).
However I always love how Beryl always comes up wtih something like "Sailor Brats!" and stuff like that. xD Its definitely a more americanized villain feel. Thats probably why the first season worked well here, because Beryl was pretty straight forward "evil" like most villains in 90s cartoons, but I don't think I've watched every episode of the dub properly...
Heeeee episodes two and three watched. The bad thing about this rewatch is that im constantly thinking "oh i want to watch this episode in Japanese now"
Why is Youma Flow (pronounced as in Flow-er) called "Fro" o.o
Why does Molly know Darien o.o and how does Andrew know Luna.
I notice they sometimes speed up Tiara Action because they've cut out too much already? The dialogue is too campy I can't take all this camp. too delicious!
Beryl is my favourite so far. It feels like she's doing even less than the original anime Beryl XD
Serena: What should I do? Motoki: Have a big steak
O.o That was the best line
The second episode was done pretttty well but the battle dialogue was a bit messed up.
*Flow jumps through window* *Usagi sees* ... ... Luna: SERENA! WATCH OUT SHES COMING UP BEHIND YOU!
The third episode was a bit messy because they seemed to be very scared of accidentally implying extreme dieting / extreme workouts were a good thing. Even go so far as to give one of girls a little speech about junk food (ironically from the chubby friend...) which i dont remember from the original. While the Japanese version was more just a discussion on self-image issues with girls without a particularly strong judgement about healthy lifestyles. But I suppose the dub was the Western era of edu-tainment and there's nothing really wrong with it.
I think so far the dub has been a pretty solid adaption of Sailor Moon for its viewer demographic.
Looks like ive got Ami and Rei coming up in a few episodes!

Glass you should PM me that link too. xD
sure can do
edit: I didnt grow up with the dub so for me this dub comes across as "cheesy 90's yeah!"
Hehe maybe I should rewatch the dub as well. It is quite fun to watch! I love the BGM!!
Granted its not quite as jazzy as the original, so far the BGM is quite nice but im getting the feelings its going to be a bit limited after a bit. (PGSM had the same issue) So much synthesizer. glorious glorious synthesizer.

Episode 4 & 5
I finally figured out the issue with this show. It makes everything sound awfully sexual when its not. Everyone has deep voices and I just feel like I'm being hit on by it. Listen to the Sailor V Game in episode 5 (where Ami's introduced). It sounds like its hitting on me and Luna... T.T its a little disturbing.
^ the girl on the left has a weird voice
HA SAFFRON I'VE GOT YOU NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That part took me by surprise, it came out of nowhere.
The Superstar episode was a bit weak I felt... Told a bit poorly and the introduction of Ami, to be honest, Usagi came off actually a bit nasty I felt... Also changing the school's computers to a computer store was weird. Can you just go into a store and use it? And why is Derella now turning things to ice... it looks and acts like glass o.o Also, the fourth wall was broken by Serena, I kind of liked that XD
I was a bit disappointed in these last two, not quite up on the level of Talk Radio. Let's hope Time Bomb does better.

There are stores where you can go in use a computer. Usually it's a drug store or a general store though.

It's really hard for me to watch the first season dubbed, I dunno why. I love the third and fourth season dubs. Maybe it's just DiC, haha.
The only thing I can say I adore about the first two seasons is that they do a lot of internal monologuing, which is great and adds to the characters, whereas they would have had deep, meaningful silences in the Japanese version.

Hmmm.... I might have to join you for seasons one and two. I grew up on them and have a deel fondness for them even now. But unlike Initial, I'll have to drop out after R, Serena's voice kills me.

I agree with the 'everything sounds awfully sexual' thing to an extent. For instance, a lot of the episode titles sound like they could be porn movies or erotic novels. Also, it seems no one can do heavy breathing on the dub without making it sound like an orgasm.
On the subject of everyone having deep voices, though, I actually noticed the opposite. To me, it sounds like everyone's been breathing helium.

Ahh yes. This is something that the dub (both DiC and Cloverway were guilty of it) did quite a lot. It made all the characters much meaner. Even Ami, the girl with nary a mean bone in her body, gets a moment or two where she's just needlessly cruel.
The novelization (lol, remember those?) of the end of Jadeite's arc broke my freaking heart. I read that before I ever saw the epiosde, I was quite disappointed that it didn't strike me in the same way as the novel did.

I've never read the novels either ~ someone find them
Anyway up to Nephrite's Nephlight's arc...
The remainder of Jadeite's arc moved along quite quickly with few issues. Mamoru, Luna, Rei and Usagi are a bit nastier than their Japanese counterparts. Rei's introductory episode worked alot better in the dub than Ami's, nice little change to the Thetis (Titas now) Jadeite relationship, light flirting that I don't remember in the original, its nice to see a few different interpretation of this kind of thing. It might be a bit shocking but dub Beryl might actually be slightly better developed than her original counterpart, unlike manga musical and live action Beryl in the Japanese, the original anime's Beryl didn't have particularly much focus, same old same old but the dub seems to give her different reactions to things that give a very nice variation. Well done *claps for dub*. However at this cost, Beryl may have a bit too much personality that costs her a little bit of authority, she seems less threatening than the Japanese Beryl. Much more Ah~ha~Beryl~Look~at~me~Go than Beryl. Queen of the Dark Kingdom. Give and take I guess.
Nephrite's arc is my least favourite in the anime so its hard for me to like it much better in the dub, there have been no drastic changes that I've noticed. Until... until... until...
Wait for it....
The "Who is that Masked Man" and "An Animated Mess" episodes.
They didn't make very much sense with the changes ._. I mean what
Why is Haruna chaperoning the girls to the Department Store to meet an anonymous stranger who sends love letters to young girls. That's not an appropriate field trip. At least in the Japanese she was concerned that it wasn't safe but secretly jealous.
An Animated Mess. That accent. Is that a real accent? What is wrong with that one who wasn't Cassie's voice. and why did one of the Gemini Warriors sound like a dehydrated man.
Those episodes. I'm pretty sure they weren't anything.
YOU'RE WRONG CASSIE. SO WRONG. <--- best line ever, that is going to be my ringtone.

God that girl's accent! That can't be real! It's like how Molly has a fake New York accent.
God that girl's accent! That can't be real! It's like how Molly has a fake New York accent.
I think Molly's accent is coming from a joke in the original, where Naru's speaks with an Osaka dialect (her last name is also Osaka) Osakians (for want of a better word) often have quite a thick accent, I think they're trying to bring that through in the dub.
But Laurie? is that her name. What.
Nephrite and Naru's end two-parter was sadly not as charming as the English, I think theres just too much extra dialogue for you to take it in properly and then Naru says "Its okay, we'll get a doctor and it will all be fine" o.o He's turning into sparkles in the sky Molly. Thats not an illness.
Yasha: YOU HAVE DESTROYED MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Another note is the Masquerade episode, I think it would better to have just cut the scene altogether rather than trying to explain that she was having too many romantic feels and then had a daydream rather than getting tipsy and falling asleep. Why do all the possessed people have bizarre voices, if someone was talking to me like that I would run the other way.
Started Zoisite's (Little Miss No Boobs) (which is pronounced correctly unlike Jadeite and Neprhite, as Zo-i-site)
I'm impressed with Lita's voice acting, though its not what I know from Emi Shinohara, its quite a refreshing change of interpretation of the character, well done lady.
