Even from her distance away from the direct conversation, Cassandra could see the deeper expression on the highwayman's face, how when he narrowed his brows his eyes spoke of a knowledge he was intimiate with, the slight change in how Torvald held himself further reaffirming her sudden burst of inspiration:
The thieves were former Star Catchers themselves. He made quick, neat, and detailed notes on a sheet of paper pulled from his clean sleeve as Saphira spoke of bitterweeds and their uses, a slight frown in his mouth as she spoke of their addictive qualities, "I know what they can do, girl," he muttered to himself, just loud enough for Saphira to pick up on, his pen-work pausing as his eyes drew up to meet hers again with her "if" statement. The sardonic look that followed her offer for an additional exchange could make fools swallow their tongues. "Don't press your luck." |

| As she listened, silent and waiting, Cassandra frowned, watching the two monster's expressions. The subtle shifts of their faces, a narrowing of brows and a slight straightening of a spine solidified the notion that had been building in her thoughts as she listened on. The realization fueled her anger towards these men even as she felt some semblance of pity. They didn't deserve her pity. No matter what they might have gone through, that didn't excuse what they were doing now. She couldn't keep herself from breaking her silence, however, the words forming before she could hold them back. " Just because you failed, just because others have failed, doesn't mean we will." She was careful to keep her anger clear from her voice, not wanting to set these monsters on edge, not with the potential of leaving with their lives so close at hand. " We knew the risks, that's true," she continued, looking to the leader. " But surely you must understand the burning need to try despite those risks. Why make it even more difficult for those who have come after you? You even said it yourself: no champions in years. Which means the coins you steal, the coins you kill for, are completely useless to you." She shifted her position, shaking her head, voice taking on a harsher edge. " It doesn't make sense to me." She glanced away from the monster then, unable to look at him anymore. " Maybe by doing all of this, you're the reason those past Star Catchers have failed, rending those coins null and void. Why not... encourage Star Catchers, help them achieve the dream they are risking their lives to achieve, instead of solidifying their demise with your terrible actions?" |

| Shashka watched as the small girl scurried away, a moment later returning hefting a bloodied axe. She averted her gaze from the gore on the blade and patted her own waist. She had never removed her daggers from where they hung on her belt, and she felt reassured by their cool, metallic touch. Maybe her cloak, the one she had just thrown away, had hidden them well enough. Maybe she had been too obviously distraught to use them. It didn't really matter. Adjusting her pack, she turned and started to walk. "Can you carry that thing?" she called over her shoulder. |

Torvald tensed, and the leader took notice and calmed himself, looking down to tap out the embers that threatened to burn the paper with Saphira's scarce notes upon them. "Now leave before I take away any chance you find out." He sat solidly and shoved the paper towards Saphira. "Trade route details. Now." |

| Kitty fell into stride with Shashka, rapidly catching up as she regained her breath—she still felt somewhat out of sorts after the intensity of what they had just been through. She was doing her best to forget it, but her body remembered vividly. It took her a moment to realize why the other girl asked her such a question. She had been in Lorham for so long, surrounded by a village that knew her family, herself, and her history. No one in her hometown questioned her strength—they utilized it. Even a few days before the journey, she had been wrangling a neighboring flock for assistance with shearing after the eldest son broke his leg in an accident near the well. She didn't quite laugh at the concern, but she did give a wry smile. It felt strange to be with someone who knew nothing about her. Cassandra and... the other Star Catcher-hopefuls from her village... knew her very well, after all. "No problem," she responded. She barely noticed its weight, more focused on how nicely-balanced it was. This was a well-crafted tool. "Thanks." |

| She raised her eyebrows. Shashka hadn't actually been offering to carry the axe, just wondering if dragging it along would slow them both down. But, she thought, looking at the girl, she seems to be handling it fine.... better than fine, actually. Good. Strength is good. Unexpected strength is even better. Big, scary axe is good, too. Maybe all those things will keep us safe."Welcome," she replied, flatly. She plodded along. It seemed strange to make small talk now. What do you say to someone after you've both seen a murder at point blank range? She willed the thought from her mind. She was not going to think about it. Instead, she asked a practical question. "Do you know what's up ahead?" |

| The outburst shook her, jumping at the loud words and forcing her to look back at the man with sparks on his hands and fire in his eyes. He dismissed her soon after, but Cassandra didn't move. If this were a story, confidence would bolster her, a shield against any fears. But her heart raced painfully in her chest, the threat of the monster's bow still stark in her mind, made all the more frightening with the body of a familiar face by her side. She clenched her fist against these feelings, unwilling to leave Saphira behind after having semi-promised to wait. Unwilling to leave the matter where it lied amongst the embers of the man's anger. " So tell us," she said. Her words were filled with far more bravado than she actually felt, the statement simple and clear, and she raised her chin stubbornly to look at the man. To justify her inaction to leave, she added, " I'm waiting for my friend. Unless you're going to dishonor the deal, I'll continue to wait." She paused, crossing her arms to hide her shaking hands. " I'll be quiet, if it helps. But...if my words anger you so much, maybe you should take a closer look at your decisions." With that, she gripped at the wheelbarrow once more, wishing that Charles's steady presence was still warm beside her. Wishing that Kitty was here with her soft slate blue eyes, even as she didn't want Kitty anywhere near this situation. Wishing that she hadn't just talked herself into her own death. But the judgment of the thieves's actions still boiled inside of her, and she couldn't have kept quiet, no matter how foolish it may have been. She couldn't stop herself from hoping that, with a few well-chosen words inspired by Saphira's own success earlier, that she could also inflict change in this moment. |

| She squinted at the distance. "A town? City? Maybe?" Kitty wished they had a map. The geography that had been covered in school wasn't terribly robust. Most Lorham kids never left their hometown, after all. She supposed that the council didn't think it was worthwhile to spend time and money teaching skills that wouldn't be useful. That was definitely not helpful for those who went off on the Star Catcher quest, but that wasn't something anyone was going to encourage. In fact, now that she thought about it, could they have been omitting such information specifically to make it harder? To make it less appealing? She hoped they got answers soon... although now, without their coins, they wouldn't be able to attempt to buy a map even if they found one for sale. She tried not to think about that last part. |

| - Shaska and Kitty RTRP:
Shaska
She has no idea where we're going either. This did not bode well with Shashka. When she considered that not knowing what was ahead had been about 99% of their last "interesting" encounter, she felt a little sick. Even more frustrating was the fact that there were simply too many bad things to ignore them all. She felt disappointed. Disappointed, tired, and thirsty. She cursed herself again for not bringing a canteen of water. "Do you have anything to drink?" she asked bluntly.
Kitty
They had spent enough time following the river to drink from it and refill the bottle from her pack.
"Yes," Kitty replied, digging past the blue fabric of her own Star Catcher cloak to find the thing. She offered it to Shashka without further comment. When she still traveled with... the others... they often shared.
Shaska
She took the canteen, surprised at how easily this girl gave up such a vital resource as water. Everyone she had run into so far had been hoarding resources, but then... things had changed. She had to admit, even her own attitude was slightly shifted. How could it not be? She gulped the water greedily, being careful not to jostle the bones of her inflamed nose. It felt cool and refreshing and she drank enough to feel satisfied, but still left enough for Kitty in the container. "Thanks." She wiped an arm across her mouth and handed back the canteen.
Kitty
Kitty felt the weight of the bottled that was handed back, nodding in reply to the girl's gratitude. They should refill it again when they had a chance. Maybe there would be a well in whatever they approached. She didn't currently feel hungry or thirsty, but that was likely to change. At least for the moment they could focus on making some headway.
She pushed back thoughts of how that separated her further from Cassandra.
"So..." Ugh, she had never been good at starting conversations.
"Is there a plan?"
Shaska
"Yeah, don't die," Shashka scoffed.
Kitty
Kitty nodded. It was a good plan.
Shaska
My eyebrows are going to evacuate my face if I keep raising them this often. She couldn't believe Kitty was just... agreeing with everything she was saying. This girl is definitely gonna die out here. Nobody with that kind of amicability was going to make it very far. "So..." she wondered, "Why are you on this super fun journey?"
Kitty
She paused.
Did she want to tell the truth? Or what she had told everyone at the summit? The gray-blue eyes searched Shashka's face, lips firm as she tried to make her decision. She knew it was foolish, but she couldn't bear the thought of someone laughing at her about it.
Maybe she could compromise.
"My family," she started, the replies as terse as ever. "She... they need something I can't afford." "Are you..." She paused, licking her dry lips. She didn't really want to know. She didn't want to be alone again, but it might happen.
"Are you going home now?"
Shaska
Shashka saw the look in the girl's eyes. It was all too familiar. Sick family member. Kitty followed her admission up with a quick question, confirming her suspicion. I wouldn't want to talk about it either. "Yeah. I've made up my mind. I wanted... to stay but," she sighed, "I just can't leave my family alone. My Papa, he needs me." She turned pinkish at her uttered confidence. This was the most forthcoming she'd been with anyone since the start of this trip; anyone in quite a while, actually.
Kitty
Kitty couldn't fault her for wanting to go home. It would be easiest to go home now, wouldn't it? The farther away they went, the harder it was to trek back. Although she supposed you'd have a bit more leeway as a failed Star Catcher. You wouldn't be bound by the need for the coins, after all. You'd just get to try and plead. There were bound to be some soft-hearted people willing to help you get home.
Still, she didn't relish continuing without anyone else. But it seemed like that's what she'd have to try.
"When will you turn back?
Shaska
"I'm going to ask for directions at the next town, maybe try to get a ride in the direction of home." She was trying to play nonchalant, but she hated admitting her failure. She tried to keep the image of her Papa embracing her, as she knew he would upon her return, in the forefront of her mind. He won't be ashamed of me. He'll probably just be happy to see me alive and mostly well.
Kitty
Kitty nodded again. She couldn't ask this stranger to stay. That was crazy. She had given up her cloak and her right to find the star.
Maybe she had the right idea.
Maybe Kitty should go home, too.
But... she had Cassandra's axe now. If she took it with her, how did that leave the currently-missing girl any chance to accomplish her own goal? Wasn't that some form of theft? Her intent had been to prevent someone else from stealing it, but how did she really think she'd make it work? This was too much. She was starting to feel tired as the adrenaline wore off.
"Good luck," she finally offered, feeling she had to say something.
Shaska
"You're still going to go on? Alone?" Shashka had the feeling if she left this girl by herself that something would go very, very wrong. Yes, she had an axe but she was such a push over. She'd get flattened. Eaten alive. She was surprised at her own protectiveness. You can't get this way over every adorable girl who gives you the time of day she reminded herself.
Kitty
Kitty frowned, but not because she was mad at Shashka. She knew how crazy it was. It was mostly directed at herself.
"Yes," she admitted, although she felt embarrassed just saying it. She could feel her cheeks burning with shame. "I know. I do."
She really didn't want a lecture, but she wouldn't have faulted the other girl for giving her one. They had been through a lot in such a short period of time. They weren't even at their first actual town, and already multiple people were dead, one of them... No, she wasn't going to think about that right now.
"I have to try."
Shaska
"Aughhhhhh," Shashka exclaimed. "Are you crazy? Did you miss what just happened back there?" she said, gesticulating wildly behind them with both hands. "Look, it's no good to anyone if you end up dead too." And I care about this because, why again? She wasn't sure what it was, but she had a desire to protect this girl. She just has one of those "help me" faces.
Kitty
Kitty sighed. After all, this wasn't unexpected. It wasn't like she hadn't heard similar comments before, even in response to things much less dangerous than the actual Star Catcher trial. She waited patiently for Shashka to finish, looking as contrite as possible. That always seemed to help people wrap up their outbursts.
Shaska
Shashka crossed her arms. "Oh gods, you're serious, aren't you?" she rubbed her chin with her hand. Kitty was still looking at her with that same, childlike gaze. She closed her eyes for a moment, deciding. "Change of plans then." Her eyes opened. "Or, well, same plan. Still don't die, but this time I'll be helping you not die, alright?" The last word was uttered as more of an implicit command than an actual question.
Kitty
Oh good, the other girl had calmed down. She waited another moment before she spoke. Kitty had certainly not expected help—she thought Shashka seemed enough like a young woman of her word, believing completely that they'd reach the settlement and the brunette with the long braid would wave goodbye and trek back to her home.
At least then, Shashka wouldn't have to subject herself to anything else dangerous. Didn't she deserve that?
If only she could think of the right words to protest. The other girl with other braids would have known what to say. Unfortunately, she was off somewhere else, hopefully with Cassandra.
Hopefully alive.
No, this was not the time.
"That's very nice, but I understand why you want to go," she replied.
Shaska
She doesn't want my help?! She really is mad. Shashka couldn't believe she was being brushed off. Didn't this pipsqueak know what she was offering? Surely she couldn't be that thick? "Well, lucky for me, you don't get to decide where I go, and I've said I'm coming."
She was pissed. If she was being honest with herself (and she wasn't) it was way better than feeling all wrung out and sad, but she wasn't interested in introspection right now. Her anger overwhelmed her guilt, and she ran with it, marching forward with a renewed vigor.
Kitty
“Okay,” the other girl replied meekly, unwilling to argue. “Thank you.”
Shaska
Shashka adopted a frustrated expression at Kitty's response. This is gonna be a really long walk.

| She ignored the man's speech, unable to even think about it. Going back? After everything she had seen? No. It was too late. She wasn't going to go home empty-handed and traumatized. If she had to go through this, then she at least needed something to show for it. To be honest, she was quite surprised he turned down her offer. It was a quick way to richness, and yet... Her gaze flicked back to the bound Star Catcher. Just who was this person? The second unexpected thing was Cassandra speaking up. She was going to mess up Saphira's negotiations by riling this guy up, wasn't she? Was she really trying to appeal to his better side? From past experiences, Saphira knew this was a fool's errand. But what did she mean about just because you failed? She jumped when he suddenly exploded, though noting that he seemed to have shown his element, literally. She frowned, wondering what exactly he had seen 'out there'. He seemed so... She was good at reading body language, and clearly he had been traumatized. Cassandra had struck a nerve. Then she realized that that meant he had seen it. Whatever was out there. Did that mean...? Combined with what Cassandra said earlier... Was he also a Star Catcher? One who had now turned against the rest of them? She found it even more vile, somehow, to be betrayed by their own kind, but was also burning with curiosity about what had happened in his journey. And this provided her with one more leverage... Cassandra had definitely made him lose her temper, which could jeopardize any further attempt from Saphira to achieve peaceful resolution. She sighed. It was so hard to work with... unlearned people. She took a deep breath. What she was about to say was risky, but she had to try it. It was the only card left to play. "So tell me what your wish was going to be," she challenged. "I bet it's better than just money. I bet it's better than what this Star Catcher can yield you, whatever you plan to do with them. Tell me, and I may have a way to make it come true in exchange for them, once I get my star." |

| She scribbled down the information she'd offered, even as her brain worked harder. The offer wasn't good enough. But then something he said clicked in her mind. She finished writing, then put the pen down. "Or... we can work together like you said. I'll help you with your operation, and along the way, you'll help me find the star. Surely with the three of us our chances to find it would increase."She tried to appeal to some part of him that still desired the wish, the part that once wanted it so badly he would risk everything. Sure, he had become jaded and cynical about the whole thing now, but maybe... Or was his trauma of whatever he had seen too great? She knew Cassandra likely wouldn't approve of this, as it involved a long-term involvement with the people who had murdered her friend, but again, the option for her to leave was always there. Saphira just couldn't abandon this mysterious Star Catcher on their own. She'd saved those other two, and she'd likely spared Cassandra too, and now she was determined to save all of them because she had gone this far, goddammit. |

Cassandra realizes Torvald's shifting his weight was somewhat of a warning to the highwayman leader - he didn't like where the conversation was going. The leader glanced back at his associate and heaved a sigh before standing, "Let me consult with my second, as this would affect our entire crew."
He walked over to the tents, Torvald joining him, and they spoke quietly. Well, the leader spoke quietly, Torvald seemed to mostly communicate with body language, and with his back to the girls, hiding most of the smaller man from sight, it was difficult to catch whatever expressions - facial or otherwise - the brute was saying.

| For the first time, she caught a glimpse of hesitation, of him actually considering her offer. Hope bloomed in her chest as she found the crack in the shell that she needed. Now all she had to do was keep working at it to widen it. But then... there was the second man. She'd have to win him over, too. As they began to speak, Saphira decided to use this opportunity while they were distracted to check on the mysterious Star Catcher. She crept close towards the figure, and pushed the hood off their face. And gasped. Confusion and shock warred within her as she recognized the face. She stared at the figure, expecting it to be some kind of illusion, expecting his face to morph in front of her eyes into someone else. But it remained. That blonde hair... that jawline... his eyes were closed, but she knew the exact shade of blue they were... Her body shaking, she realized now why these two wouldn't let him go for anything. But she also could not let them keep him. He was integral to everything. If she did this... maybe it would be enough. She glanced up at the two men, hoping their conversation would take a while. She began slapping the boy's face lightly, seeing if she could return consciousness back to him. Come on, come on, please wake up. |

| Cassandra stood still, holding her tongue. So far, the highwaymen seemed to have forgotten about her now that she wasn't making her presence so vividly known. But she certainly didn't like the way the conversation was going. She stayed because she told Saphira she would. But if this girl was going to start consorting with these men, then she'd have to do it on her own. There was no way Cassandra would ever get caught up with people like this, no matter how helpful they might prove to be. The shift in the second man caught her attention and as the two monsters convened together, their voices hushed, Cassandra frowned. Curiosity pulled at her, and she held herself very still in order to listen in. She spotted Saphira beginning to move and sneak off while the two men's attention were distracted with one another. She felt the need to help, but didn't trust herself enough to do anything without getting caught. Instead, it was perhaps better to try and get more information from these men, and trust in Saphira to fulfill her own task. She was certainly capable enough for it. Plus, if they were planning on betraying Saphira--no matter how much Cassandra disapproved of her getting involved with them--she wanted to know. |

Breathing quickly and quietly, startling blue-green eyes roved around the campsite as he flexed his muscles in an attempt to free himself, catching sight of the random packages he had been "stored" with, the table, the tents, the kidnappers with their backs to them, the trees, the firepit, a Star Catcher holding tightly to a wheelbarrow with another Star Catcher within it - the rope binding was tight around his ankles, his knees, his chest and at his wrists behind his back, but with enough time and careful effort he could loosen it but it'd be faster with a knife. His eyes swept to his rescuer again, instinct curling in his gut to double check that it was a rescue before he got carried away with a plan and -- Green eyes, bright red hair - a flash of disbelief coursed through him and he paused, his brows furrowing as he searched her features again, and then his stomach dropped out, a frown creasing his face as he tore his gaze away. He recognized her. Things were becoming even more complicated. What was she doing here? ... and what was she going to do? He closed his eyes, took in a deep breath through his nose and held it for a second, going over his options... Only to realize he didn't have any options. Frown fading into a nervous line, he opened his eyes and met her gaze as he released his breath, the sigh coming out quiet and completely complementary to his defeated look. He was in her hands and completely at her mercy. - DM wrote:

| He woke up. She was so relieved, a smile broke on her face, but... he didn't seem too excited to see her. She saw a flash of recognition in his eyes, but she saw only dismay afterwards, so in contrast with the excitement she felt within her. Perhaps it had something to do with the reason he was here? And those rumors... she thought she might understand what was going on, but she could ask him to explain later. She'd play along with his game, whatever was necessary. She fished out the hunting knife that was still in her pocket and quickly used it to cut as many of his ropes as she could while the men were still distracted. "Fancy meeting you here," was all she murmured as she went to work on his ties. |

| It was difficult to hear anything at all, and the small bits that came through the hushed tones were only broken pieces of a puzzle with no picture to follow. She frowned, glanced towards Saphira, but from her position she could only make out a shock of blonde hair and not much else. "What are you looking at me like that for? Do you want to send her off to her death? Is this not better?"This brought her attention onto the highwaymen once more, but it didn't help make the picture any clearer. Were they... concerned? That didn't make much sense at all. They held no qualms killing and threatening others, but perhaps they liked Saphira's capable and quick-witted demeanor? Did they know her? Her frown deepened even more as she saw Saphira was still over with the captured Star Catcher. Worry struck through her. These monsters weren't going to like it if she was caught like that. Without many options available to her, Cassandra stayed ready, muscles tense, but still. For now. |

| He thought he saw a flash of something like disappointment in her at his reaction and felt bad about not having considered things from her end, but as she efficiently moved to start cutting his bonds he put it aside for now - he'd apologize later or try to explain himself or try to do something else to make up for it. As the ropes were severed one by one he thought hard to try to remember her name. How many years had it been? Her soft words held a sardonic note, setting a mood he tried to fit. "Likewise," he replied quietly back, his baritone voice coming out just a fraction above a whisper to match her tone. He watched the two men on the other side of the campsite, looking for any indication that they may turn back around. " What's the plan?" - Ruffians wrote:

| As he asked her what the plan was, Saphira shrugged, pulling off the last of his ropes away. "Run? Or fight? I don't suppose you have a weapon on you? She and I do, three against two wouldn't be bad, but we can also just try to sneak away or make a break for it."She glanced at Cassandra and then at the two men. They seemed to still be arguing, but who knows how long that would last? Now that he was free, she was certainly not going to continue with her plan to join this thief gang. She had a star to catch. And while they might be useful to help, no doubt they'd want to spend most of their time on their own endeavors instead of making the star a priority. "Better decide quick before they notice." |

| They must've met over four years ago, before the Trials started. The larger brute continued to block sight of the smaller - all the better. Where had he seen her? He glanced back at her as she worked on the ropes, fingers focused on the task; he appreciated the care she put into it. Red hair... he remembered their conversation - the gist of it, anyway - but where... by a lake? A lake. Lush forestry, mid-north. Shadeslake. Saphira of Shadeslake. Saphira pulled off the last of his bonds and he rolled his wrists to work blood back into them, listening to her quiet options and reminded to look for his things - his pack was not on him as it had been, but he was practically sitting in a stash and found the items quickly, the blue cross-guard of the sword leaned against the earth wall, the shield and his bag not far. He'd need it before they -- She didn't have a plan? Disappointment was quickly turned on its head in favor of making a plan. Fighting would be fine if he was guaranteed they were all adept at it, but Saphira was the daughter of a Mayor and he had no clue as to the background of the other girl, and Torvald was huge. They'd have to knock him out quickly if they wanted any chance of survival, and that'd leave the other to do whatever he wanted while they were distracted with the brute. ... but honestly what other choice did they have? If they tried to sneak away or make a break for it they would without a doubt be followed. But were they - those three - free to go? If they were not, surely the girl would have released the wheelbarrow by now, and surely they would not have been left unattended like that if they were going to be held against their will. He'd go with that assumption then - only he was not free to leave. His eyes strayed back to the body in the wheelbarrow. It was just a body - of that he was sure. The thieves must have killed someone, and the girl must have been seeing that his body was brought back to authorities. His lips partially pursed, wanting to reject the idea. It would be cruel to ask. ... but there were two different ways they could handle it. He glanced back to the pile of miscellaneous items around him, looking for anything even vaguely his shape, and spoke quickly and quietly to Saphira, eyes glancing back at the pair. " They'll follow if I escape, we'll need a good head start to dissuade them. See if you can get the girl to discretely get the cloak off the body and throw it this way, then keep them distracted." - Ruffians wrote:

"She won't find out!" the highwayman hissed, and the brute's form shifted, his hands moving to his waist. "A deal is a deal - " |

| Her feet were sore with walking and she tried to adjust her stride to rest the tender balls of her feet. It seemed to Shashka that they were never going to make it to whatever lay in front of them; the plains seemed to stretch endlessly on. Looking ahead, her heart leapt as she noticed a cart trundling along the lane. Finally! Transportation! She started to walk a little more energetically, then relaxed her pace. ...or it's another pile of bad luck. Given the pitfalls she'd run into so far, she couldn't help wondering if they should even bother. For all I know it's a wagon full of bandits, or cannibals. "Look, ahead. Do you see the cart?" she asked her companion. "We'll need to run if we want to try to approach it." She almost hadn't noticed that they'd become a we rather than a me and a you in her mind, but there she was, making decisions as a unit. Besides, asking for an opinion didn't mean she had to agree with whatever the wheat haired pixie decided. |

| Seeing the boy she once spoke to on a fine summer day years ago as an adult was certainly overwhelming - she had planned to meet him eventually, but not like this. And she'd seen what he looked like now, of course she had, but seeing it in the flesh really was quite something. This was beyond her wildest dreams. An adventure with him would change everything. It presented an opportunity that she never even thought of before, to form an actual relationship with him before her plan came to fruition. Maybe even won him over without all this... But right now, she had to focus on getting the both of them out of there alive if she wanted to even have hope of all of that happening. Saphira understood what he was planning, and she had to admit it was quite smart. But could he really convincingly make something resembling the shape of his body? She supposed she would just have to see. Saphira turned towards Cassandra and whispered a quick psst to get her attention. Should Cassandra turn to her, she would mimic the gesture of donning a cloak, pointing at Charles, and mouthing 'cloak', hoping she understood and could throw it over without making much of a noise. |

| So intent on listening in on the two highwaymen—intent on understanding them—it took Cassandra by surprise to have her concentration broken by a soft whistling sound. She looked over to see Saphira's eyes focused on her, intent with purpose. With a few quiet motions, Saphira made her desire known, but Cassandra frowned at it. Giving away Charles's cloak felt like a betrayal, she'd thought it to be a makeshift keepsake for his family. But... she believed that Saphira wouldn't ask unless it was important. If anything, perhaps she would give Charles's family her own Star Catcher's cloak in memory, now that the coins were no longer a possibility. As carefully as she could, Cassandra unpinned Charles's cloak, mentally asking for his forgiveness once again. Her hands were steady regardless of the emotions fit to bursting in her chest. It was uncomfortable and strange, to touch something that once had been more than just a shell of a familiar face. As she worked to get the cloak out from underneath the heavy still weight, she also kept an eye out for any potential weapon. Being without her own, in a situation that was quickly turning more and more dangerous, set her heart to racing. Cloak free in her hands, Cassandra took a deep breath, and tossed it towards Saphira, all while hoping—believing—that it would work out. |

| Kitty might not have noticed the cart if it weren't for Shashka's keen eyes and comment. She nodded at the other teenager, even though her muscles didn't exactly like the thought of a brief sprint. Even so, she knew she was ready for it. She wasn't sure exactly what her companion hoped to gain from approaching the vehicle, but she hoped that it wouldn't be anything like their last encounter. She did a quick inventory of her weapons just in case. "We should be careful," she cautioned, even as she broke into stride alongside the taller girl. She didn't really want to say it, but considering what had happened... she didn't want to wind up in that kind of situation again. As they approached, she wondered exactly what they would find. |

| The cloak fluttered towards Saphira, a flash of deep blue, but Saphira was able to catch it with a silent flourish, keeping the men none the wiser. Cassandra glanced to the highwayman then, hearing his words. Whatever Saphira had planned, it was clear that more time would be necessary. If those men found her messing about their camp... Her mind raced with what to say, what she could do. She wanted nothing to do with these monsters, would rather have left by now instead of staying this long. But Saphira needed help and Cassandra knew she was the only one in a position to do so. She swallowed hard, before deciding on a course of action. She took just a few steps closer to them, not so far that she couldn't easily get back to the wheelbarrow when necessary, but close enough that perhaps they would have a harder time seeing Saphira if they focused on her instead. She kept her hands open and empty down at her sides, trying to give off as nonthreatening a vibe as she could. From the bits she had heard, the conversation didn't seem to be going in the leader's favor. Maybe she could sweeten the pot to get the negotiations between the two going once again? " What if..." she trailed off, forcing her voice to sound curious, perhaps even desperate, and not at all disgusted. She thought of her books, pinpointing a heroine who was smooth with her words to keep from stumbling. " What if I worked with you as well? Is that possible?" She paused, then added hurriedly to her proposal, as to give the idea that she was trying to build up her worth as a prize instead of a hindrance or burden. " It could be a mutually beneficial agreement. Two Star Catchers to cash in on is better than one, after all."
