Subject: English Opening 28th January 2012, 7:35 pm
I'm curious to those who like the opening?
I've always liked it and the sort of rock music at the beginning and the 'Star Wars' type text that fades away telling the story of Sailor Moon! Then the children singing the theme song! The kids sing it well in my opinion. The words are a little wrong in parts like "never running from a real fight!". Haha, makes it sound like Sailor Moon is not scared of anything and doesn't want to run away, but she does quite a lot of times! XD
What do you think of the music and lyrics? Do you think they picked out the theme well?

I think they picked out a theme well for the first season and second season. I do believe though they should have added the other scouts to the theme. I believe that it wasn't fair for the kiddies that loved the outer scouts or even Chibiusa.

I think for a dub they did pretty well, most dubs stick to a japanese song but that one was pretty original, and went with an english one and let kids sing it. Just be happy it wasn't KidzBop >>

I far and away prefer the Japanese openings (Moonlight Densetsu, if we are comparing it to the North American dub). The NA opening is catchy, to be sure, but I think it takes away from the essence of the show and tries to conform it to a formulaic, Saturday morning cartoon. You kind of forget that the first season is about the miracle romance!
If fans want to sing the NA opening song because it is more recognizable around these parts, then I don't hold it against them in the slightest. Nevertheless, it often makes me cringe, like hearing someone sing off-key.

I love it for nostalgic reasons. It doesn't compare to the Japanese openings but i can at least sing along with it and not say the words wrong.... (I suck at pronunciation)

Lol! Yeah, she did run from the first fight.
Well, honestly, I love the English opening because it is in a familiar language, so I can sing along. I love to sing and I'm disappointed with myself when I can't sing along to Japanese songs, because I don't know the language. I wonder if I could sing along to the Spanish version...

I try to sing along to the Japanese theme, but I fail. I can sing the English part The only anime where I can sing along to the openings is Cardcaptor Sakura.

I love the english opening because of nostalgia reasons. And personally I loved the dub music in all its 90s cheesy glory. XD But I have listened to Moonlight Densetsu enough to be able to sing along to it. Its not that hard actually. XD

I actually prefer the english opening to the original. Maybe it just doesn't translate well, but I find the lyrics in the original to be just a little too corny for my tastes. It's hard to take a song with the word "kaleidoscope" in it too seriously.
I do like this line: I'm about to cry in this moonlight I can't even call you; it's already midnight
But that's about it.. I've always been a fan of songs that relate to the show. It gets me excited to watch it.
It also really helped me out as a kid when I was bad with names. If I forgot a name, I could usually just play the opening in my head and remember which Sailor is which.

So...the japanese theme song, which is about Usagi and Mamoru's destined love is cornier than a song that was a generic super hero opening?
Cause that doesn't make sense, in my mind.
Nothing against the american opening, because i LOVE the american opening, but i just can't see how the Japanese one is cornier. :/

In my opinion, yeah. Some of the lyrics are just awkward. Again, that could just be a translation issue. Songs don't always translate very well.

The English opening is fun xD I like to sing along with it sometimes, and it's still something that pops into my head every once in a while. When I was younger, my mother was very impressed with the lyrics. She thought Sailor Moon was a good role model, and she liked to sing along too. She especially loved the line "Never turns her back on a friend, she is always there to defend."

I'll be honest, I love it. XD The Japanese openings are great because they are creative and always changing and the music is wonderful. But something about the English opening, with the vocals and the words that always gets me giddy with excitement. The first opening was cut short and I remember (maybe it was when the S season aired?) that they extended it with the musical interlude and it was just too fantastic to me.
So yes, even though I loathe the English Dub, I have to admit that I do prefer/like a few of their music renditions.
If I were to compare the Japanese lyrics to the English lyrics, the Japanese is more heartfelt and endearing creative, so for those reasons better than the English. Perhaps the English lyrics are corny? It does not bother me though, what with the voices singing and I supposed it is too heavily interlaced with childhood nostalgia. ^^

lol. It is RANK with spoilers! That was the good thing about the Japanese Opening -- it had its own footage. At the same time, this was also something I loved (and drove me mad) about the English Opening because I was always SO eager to see where all these awesome clips would occur! It was an epic teaser. Hee. I remember that, during those clips that are from the Japanese Opening (such as Usagi running to Endymion) I was so disappointed when I did not ever see it in the anime seasons. Back then I did not realize that the English anime had been butchered from the Japanese and these scenes were from the Japanese opening and was not additional scenes from the series.

Well the Japanese openings has spoilers too. Like the 2nd classic one that has Venus in it and it shows Usgai turning into the moon princess. That opening was used before it was shown that Usgai was the moon princess.

The thing that is great about the English opening is that it was making it very clear what type of show this was. A fun girls super hero show that has action, that way boys aren't all like "eww its for girls" etc. It sounds nothing quite like maybe the classic My Little Pony theme song or something (which is great but still has lots of girly vibes) The theme song can appeal to both boys and girls, which i think is what they were trying to get at with the Dic Dub of sailor moon. :3

Yeah, I think the concept of the song is beautiful but I kind of agree with Enterprise, I've always thought the way it was translated was kind of corny.
The English dub opening is my ring tone! Hahah, but going by music only, I like Moonlight Densetsu better. Thats the one that always gets stuck in my head My favorite is the Sailor Stars opening though!

I see what you mean, but not all foreign music translate well, and plus some things that we interpret here may not interprted the same there. Like for example, "My heart's a kaleidoscope" could metaphorically mean that she has a hole in her heart, because the song is about wanting love from Mamorou rather than an actual kaleidoscope .

Yeah, tha's why I like both themes because they are very different. The orginal has a more rather "mature romance" feel to it where the dub is more kid like and a tad bit more edgy. Though I would say both of them has a magical feeling .
