Appearance: Penelope is a small, slight girl, pale in complexion from years spent indoors and almost waif-like in build from doing very little in the way exercise and being an extremely picky and disinterested eater, preferring to graze throughout the day to sitting down to eat a meal. Growing up her caretakers would have to distract her with stories during dinner and use key plot points as bribes to make her finish the food on her plate. With the lack of physical stress, her skin is soft and unmarred by calluses, save one on her right middle finger made from years of writing practice.

Despite rumors of her birth-mother being Iris, the goddess of rainbows, the only thing colorful about the girl's appearance are her eyes - a deep, vibrant purple that neared magenta more than navy. Her hair, long and falling in thick natural curls, is a light shade of blonde that she's often been tempted to dye other colors... but talks herself out of it before getting even close to making the attempt, the one memory of her mother being bright and light and not at all saturated, and she wants to be recognized, if ever she should come looking.

Whether at home, visiting sacred sites, or at Tiamat's court, Penelope prefers to dress comfortably and is often made this allowance in all times but battle. She prefers not to wear anything metallic or rough, opting instead for soft fabrics cut into comfortable chitons or lightweight dresses - all the better to sleep in - and prefers lighter colors to darker, defaulting to white oftentimes.

Personality: Penelope has a good deal of experience, but was really sheltered growing up. Her explorations were through the metaphysical - through dreams and daydreams, hopping from minds she knew regardless of the distance between them, seeming to recognize when a nightmare was upon them and appearing to help, else easing into a happy dream and basking in the peaceful serenity, sometimes unbeknownst to the dreamer. Penelope does not have her own dreams - she borrows from others. However, she can daydream, and used to do so often - she lost the ability as she matured, but her toddler and infantile daydreams were oftentimes so vivid that those around her could see the illusions. Her nursery was an exciting place. As she grew she had her own imaginary friend that starred with her in her daydreams... but in time, they, too, disappeared. One day she wants to get this ability back and make it so everyone can share her daydreams with her, without having to trance them into doing it.

Penelope is a people-pleaser - she wants to be recognized as being a good person. She wants to be worthy of praise and will go the extra mile (in areas that she shines) in order to please or impress parental figures or role models she respects; otherwise she often behaves well to better reflect upon herself and her parentage. She doesn't always succeed in being nice to everybody - especially within her own head - but she does her best. Her motivation is rather simple - she wants her mother to want her. She knows how to make her father and grandfather proud - just doing what she does she honors them, but she wants to be someone her mother would claim and want to spend time with.

Penelope's strengths lie in dreaming and using her abilities. She can be quite imaginative, so her suggestions and command of dreams are nigh-on impossible to ignore or see through; while she respects the dreamer's dreamscape, she can manipulate nearly anything to her advantage if the need arises. While in the real world she is not physically powerful, in the dreamworld she can be anything she needs to be to get a job done.

Any Unique Abilities/Skills: Penelope is someone who can fall asleep anywhere at anytime and typically sleeps a lot when in safe company. Can help people suffering from insomnia to sleep just by sleeping near them.

History: Penelope was abandoned soon after her birth, left in the Caves of Somnus, rumored home of the Hypnos, God of Sleep, father of Morpheus, the god of Dreams. Neither deities have ever physically been seen, but when mortals were visited by such beings within their dreams and taken to their residence, the cave was heavily featured. Some would travel there from all over the planet for sleeping problems or disturbing nightmares, and within the cave they would find only peace as they slept. In time the cave became a temple of sorts, its entrance minded by priests and priestesses; a town grew in the valley below, known for its sleeping aides and charms, and as years passed the town surrounding Somnus's Cave prospered, seemingly protected from outside forces and disasters alike. The priests and priestesses of Somnus grew in power to becoming the ruling force of the city, amassing wealth with donations left at the caves by sleepless merchants and kings seeking solace. The city became beautiful and peaceful and well renowned.

When the infant girl was discovered by priestesses, her softly sleeping form alone among the stalagmites, she was taken to the temple. Records of passage were checked, but no pregnant woman was recorded to have entered. Rumors flew about the child being a daughter of the gods, and, whether they believed this or not, she was taken under the care of the priests and priestesses until other arrangements would be found. However, when the infant started projecting fantastic illusions out into the space surrounding her during waking dreams, and when some of her caretakers reported seeing her within their dreams at night, she was accepted as a child of Morpheus and a gift from the gods, and was raised as such, offered every comfort that could be imagined as repayment for the blessings Hypnos and Morpheus had bestowed upon their city.

The girl's own powers seemed similar to the cave's - she made sleeping easy and comfortable, and her journeys through dreamscapes left the sleeper peaceful - but, unlike the cave, she could travel. She soon saw the reaches of the land, traveling to visit restless wealthy personages, introduced as the child of gods; when asked about her mother - as her father's identity seemed airtight - the priestesses offered the goddess Iris, citing a rainbow that was seen clearly in the sky on the day they found her, and yet Penelope never developed any of her mother's attributes. Some meaner creatures suggested she was abandoned by the goddess for being unworthy of her, that the goddess refused her, that the pregnancy was not of Iris's choice, and while it has never been proved that Iris actually is her mother, Penelope believes so, and tries her best to get her mother's attention and acceptance.

Disclaimer: Nothing about her parentage has actually been proven in the real world. She was found in the garb of a Sailor Senshi, a fact that her caretakers never connected in their ignorance of the magical world around them; whether she is of Hypnos's bloodline, an actual daughter of Morpheus and Iris, is unknown to them but thought of as highly likely, but like Pluto's connection to Charon, it is stated. Her abilities stem from her Sailor Crystal, but she is able to access some of them without being transformed. However~ Like Pluto and Charon, it is true. Penelope is a beloved granddaughter of the god of sleep, Hypnos, and the Grace Pasithea, a deity of hallucination and relaxation; their son, Morpheus (god of dreams), had a one-night-stand with Iris, goddess of the rainbow and messenger of the gods, and she was the result. Iris, however, is married to another and regrets that night, which is why she abandoned her daughter to the home of Morpheus's family; whether she'll be back to visit or claim Penelope is still to be seen. While Penelope grew up without real parentage or family, in her subconscious dreams - dreams she does not remember, will never remember - she is doted upon by Hypnos and Pasithea and well loved by Morpheus. He teaches her how to use her powers and command a dreamscape to bend to her will and to travel to new dreams. All of her powers are blessings given to her by her family - powers borrowed from their Will. She will never know of their involvement, only see the results - use the abilities, call out names for reasons she can't explain beyond ideas that came into her mind from mythology books. One day, perhaps, she will unlock the ability to move her subconscious memory to consciousness, but, as of yet, that has not even occurred to her. It would have no reason to.

As she grew and developed, her mental limits expanded and powers grew; she was soon dreamwalking through heads as easily as walking across the room. She changed and tweaked dreams and enjoyed them; distances did not seem to matter to her - she had but to meet and sync with a person once in order to share their dreams. As a favorite pastime, she would often forego waking to sleeping, seeing the tasks of day to day living as trials that had to be overcome to get back to sleep.

She was visited once by another Sailor Senshi - Sailor Enlil, who was sent to introduce herself in the name of her Queen and offer her knowledge in exchange for allegiance; she agreed - not really understanding why not, and finding new stories extremely interesting - and learned about the Milky Way Galaxy, Queen Tiamat and her team of senshi, and the Tuppi Sumati crystal. Enlil left, but returned several more times as tutor and trainer until, finally, Somnus was requested at the court of Tiamat. Accepting, Somnus used her Sailor Wings, flew, and met with the Queen of her sector, leaving the nucleus of the galaxy to enter the disk and arms for the first time. Immediately she saw Tiamat as a parental figure, and did her best to impress her and please her, and was accepted nearly immediately as a Queen's favorite, despite her lack of physical abilities. Her dreams and daydreams were impressive... but Tiamat saw how they could be used in times of danger and war.

When, nearly a year later, the Sailor War fell upon them, Tiamat sent for Somnus within the first few days, keeping her at court for the girl's safety... and to use her when battles looked lost. She would send Somnus in, guarded, and have her put enemies to sleep to quicker do away with them, else dreamwalk into leader or commander's minds, find out their weaknesses - sometimes even do battle with them - and return with information on how to bring the planet back to the light. Somnus never had to raise a sword or strike a blow in the physical world, but within people's heads, she was a nightmare.

Thrice she was the key piece to freeing worlds of chaotic influences, each and every time Tiamat demanded there would be no Chaos-aligned survivors. Her secret weapon would remain secret... and securely in her pocket.

Storyline Specific Information:
Continuation - When Enlil's message to Tiamat arrived to inform her of the situation and request Somnus's involvement, Penelope felt a surge of giddiness - she had actually felt the message coming in - or, rather, Enlil's need to communicate - and hoped that meant her mother was trying to become involved in her life, somehow. Further learning that other high-profile Senshi would be there, including those of the Silver Crystal sector that had restored the Galaxy Cauldron a couple of months ago, made her agreement almost immediate, despite the inherent danger Queen Tiamat attempted to imprint upon her.

When she arrived, after being somewhat starstruck by Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus, she was cautiously optimistic in her ability to help everyone out... until the complications started to arise.

Sailor Somnus is of the same group as Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnesmosyne of old, her attire similar to theirs in all ways but color. The general fuku style is a spaghetti-strapped empire-waist loose mini dress with a standard, solid-color sailor collar fitting overtop, attached only along one part of the straps through a fabric loop. Her signature color is deep purple, and all of her fuku is shaded in this fashion with variations for the ribbon outlining and the lighter bows that keep the long curled hair gathered into more manageable clumps. She wears short sandals and has silver-white bracelets in lieu of any glove; her tiara is more a head net of purple beads, their purpose to help focus her psychic energies to better be able to insert herself into another's dream.

≈Hypnos Beam! - A purple beam of bubbly light - barely noticeable to the naked eye - is sent towards a target. The beam puts the target to sleep, making them more susceptible to her dreamwalking abilities and attacks. Strengths: Target falls asleep. Weakness: Target can be woken up.
≈Nyx Duvet! - Blanket/Cover of Darkness
≈Thanatos Trance - Somnus touches a person's forehead with her thumb and they fall into a death-like Sleep; can only be awakened with a kiss, otherwise person is comatose; completely susceptible to Somnus's dreamwalking abilities and attacks.
≈Pasithea Suggestion - A faint, rainbow-sparkling light washes towards the target; if it hits their face, it makes the target susceptible to the suggestion to relax and opens their imagination; Somnus can talk softly about daydreams and the target will hallucinate her words and can be talked into acting on them.
≈Summoning ______ - Summons one of the Oneiroi as a walking dream: Morpheus takes the shape of humans, Phantasos for items, Phobetor for animals, mostly bears and tigers to frighten targets. Can only be used after Hyphos Beam puts the target to sleep; works only in the person's dream.
≈Dreamwalk - Sailor Somnus can enter another person's mind and examine their memories to find out their fears; she can then manipulate their thoughts to make them think their worst nightmares are coming true. Cannot control her own body during a dreamwalk, can be hurt during a dreamwalk (attacked by the host's mind can end in real damage), can be woken from a dreamwalk.

Weapons or Magical Items: Dream Box - a small ivory trinketbox; within are orbs colored white and black, each orb containing a dream or a nightmare. Somnus can send either to enchant a target.

The word was like a weight in Somnus's stomach. Them. She had agreed to do this for everyone here - all the sleeping people, and there were so many of them. That she'd have to do this repeatedly, when she was already so tired... She nodded, gulping as she tried not to cry at the prospect. It'd be okay. Was she the daughter of Hypnos or wasn't she? She could do this.

She didn't want to do this. This was hard. This was terrible. She hurt all over, she was exhausted, and there were more than twenty to go after this.

But she would do this.

She breathed through her nose to hold back her tears of inadequacy, placed her shaking fingers on either side of Bastet's head, pads of her index, middle, and ring finger pressing gently against Bastet's temples, and concentrated.

Heat. Light. Smoke. Burning bodies. Burnt hair.

It was only a dream.

Sailor Somnus fell backward once again, this time without stirring.

Somnus woke with a start, gasping for air and reaching for her head, some of her difficulties in entering this dream becoming clearer. "There's more than one dreamer!" she exclaimed breathlessly, curling up into a sitting position with one knee tight to her chest. As many details as possible - she closed her eyes and recalled as much as she could, her voice spilling from her mouth, words nearly tripping over each other as she remembered what she had seen. "There was a city on fire - it was hot and dry, filled with smoke - the buildings were white and made of some sort of stone or brick? White, generally, maybe bleached from a sun, all fire scorched; the road was covered in brown sand, there was a pile of burned bodies piled high, and it wasn't just Bastet there - that's why I'm having trouble staying in - their minds have been linked!"
