- You stride purposefully into the Library of the Galaxy Cauldron, a newly printed manuscript held tightly to your chest as you press past the pristine shelves and graffitied writing tables, offering the smallest of waves to Haine, the librarian, as you head straight for your display station. Your little book. With a fond smile you open the cover and flip to the end, carefully pulling the bindings apart, smoothing the manila pages softly, preparing to add the latest chapter to the story. With a soft ‘thunk’ you place the new pages in place and softly tuck them in until the work looked whole. With a smile you close the book again, setting it on its angled stand, ready and waiting to be read. You look over it, straightening it – it had to look impressive, right? Right. You nod to yourself in satisfaction, then move to walk away… only to go straight back to your table and realign the ‘comments?’ paper and test the pen for ink. There. Now complete. You walk away again, glancing around to see if there were any interested-looking lurkers within the affectionately titled “Writers Corner”. But really, though; the Galaxy Cauldron was a big and busy place; there was no telling whom might read it.
With a wistful sigh, you leave the room, letting the large and romantic glass doors silently slide shut behind you. You hoped you had done your best… but was there really any way to improve? Practice was the best method, right? Reading and practicing. And if there were any glaring faults someone would leave it in your comments section, you were sure. But if only… if only you knew people were being honest. And wouldn’t it be great if there were someplace where you could easily find helpful hints or guides to fleshing out your plot? Your characters? How about making the middle sections read easier… or less boring. You hang your head, marching back down the hallway towards the Arcade – maybe someone will start a funny-face war with you or— “Excuse me!” someone cries as they brush past you, nearly knocking you over. “Hey!” you yell after them, following them down another hallway. “What’s the big idea? Where are you going?” “I’m really sorry!” the girl yelled, looking over her shoulder as she ran past, her arms filled with loose-leaf paper. “I’m late for an accountability meeting!”
Accountability meeting? Confused, you rush to catch up. “Accountability meeting?” you prompt, “What’s that?” “It’s something in the Writer’s Guild!” she replies breathlessly, “to keep you writing! If you keep meeting marks they up your status!” “Your status?” you respond, noticing for the first time a large door covered in artwork that seemed to flow from computer-crafted designs to sketches to finger paints to water colors seamlessly – what was that?! “Yeah! It’s a Guild!” she replies matter-of-factly. “Look, I’m late!” “Can I come with you?” you blurt out – if the Galaxy Cauldron had a writing guild that keeps you accountable for writing, you definitely want to get into that! It’s so hard to keep going without someone yelling at you to do it! “What?” she replies incredulously, looking you over critically. “Sure, I guess. But only if you open the door!” The door before you was large and made out of some sort of wood. You pull at the old-fashioned iron ring, and then pull harder – it was heavy! Finally it swung open, and your guide was suddenly gone, running up a set of circling stairs and out of sight on a second floor, leaving you all alone in a large circular room with warm, tile floors that reflected the light to make the already airy room seem even larger. “Hey!” someone calls, “You new?” Tearing your eyes away from the two-story windows, you follow the sound of the voice and find a cute little front desk. Manning the desk was… Sailor Uranus?! No…wait… she was only cosplaying. Really good at the cosplaying, though. You recognize her as one of the forum admins: one from the roleplaying wing. She sees you and beckons you over, “C’mon over! You like to write, right?” “Yeah,” you hesitantly offer as you approach, stopping just on the other side of the desk. There were papers and pencils arranged neatly on the other side… along with an array of random sentences and phrases – sudden bursts of inspiration, perhaps? “Well then, you’ve come to the right place!” Sailor Uranus replies, her voice warm with welcome. “This is the Writing and Roleplaying Guild, and we’re here to help you hone your craft! We’ve got tips and tricks for creating stories, advice on writing styles, challenges to keep your creativity flowing, contests, games, workshops, and no shortage of people who would love to read what you’ve got!” She smiled, “Would you like to sign up?” Writing and Roleplaying Guild Members obviously like to write and are eager for opportunities to increase their writing skills and get feedback on their creations!
