Storyline Specific Information:- The Choosing:
After World War IV, the countries of China, Japan, North and South Korea joined together to create one nation: New Asia. It would be ruled by one monarchy and a committee of ambassadors. The civilians would be split based on their occupations and incomes. This split became known as the castes. The citizens of New Asia were torn on whether they liked the castes or whether they didn't (the wealthy liked it, the poor didn't). Rebels began to assemble, some in the North, and some in the South. This is the way New Asia is run.
It is tradition in New Asia for the country's crowned prince to host a process known as The Choosing when he became of age. The Choosing is a method in which all young ladies between the ages of 16 and 18 living in New Asia would enter their name into the lottery pool. Randomly, 35 ladies would be Chosen and sent to live in the New Asian palace for The Choosing to officially begin. Over the course of the next several months, the Chosen ladies would compete for the prince's heart. As he gets to know each lady more and more, the prince would send those who he did not want as his wife back home. The process continues until there is one girl left, and she becomes the next princess of New Asia.
The Choosing had been tradition for centuries, but now times are changing. Rebels are more ruthless and restless. Foreign allies are being strained. The economy is crashing, and there doesn't seem to be any way to fix it.
It is the year 2670, and Crown Prince Endymion of New Asia has finally come of age. It is time for The Choosing to begin.
Additional Information: Renowned race driver, star athlete, and model--it is no surprise that wunderkind Haruka Tenoh has earned her status as a Two. Orphaned at a young age, Haruka was taken in by a mysterious wealthy aunt who provided the financial support needed to allow the boyish young woman to hone her talents. She lives a life of privilege, but it is a lonely one. Haruka herself has little contact with her benefactor, generally communicating through the woman's solicitor. She lives in a luxury apartment and is regularly invited to mix among the best of society.
Yet through it all, Haruka is discontent. She feels like there is something wrong about her life--she has felt it from a very young age. No matter what new pursuit she tries, she seems to be chasing a distant ideal. Haruka is drawn to speed, feeling more comfortable when life rushes her by. She has no one in her life that she is close to; no one that she can ask about this strange restlessness. Maybe everyone feels this way.
She began her career when her excellence at track and field events was noticed in junior high school. Since that moment, she has participated and dominated a variety of athletic events and has now moved on to racing. Her looks have been a benefit as well; she is able to supplement her income (not that she really lacks for money) by capitalizing on her elegant and androgynous features. Her face and name are commonly recognized in households throughout New Asia.
Her acceptance into The Choosing comes as a severe shock to Haruka. She is not interested in love, not interested in the Prince, not interested in money, and not able to take advantage of a rise in her status. Haruka only entered the lottery on the insistence of her aunt, who used guilt to pressure the young woman into submitting. She never expected to be selected. Now she must participate in a game that she has no interest in winning, without breaking any of the rules.
She doesn't yet know that love might await her there...but not where expected.
RP Sample: She hadn't even bothered to pay attention to the announcement. The phone rang, interrupting an unsuccessful evening playing (or at least, attempting to play) the piano in her spacious loft. She considered letting it go to voicemail, but answered on the last ring.
"Hello?"
She didn't even get a moment to finish her greeting before her aunt's voice cut her off.
"Congratulations, dear girl! Oh, I'm so excited for you! I know you'll do me proud!"
Haruka's silence sat heavily in the space after the good wishes, like a wet napkin spoiling the mood. When the voice spoke next, it was terse and punctuated with irritation.
"...For heaven's sake, child, don't you
know?"
The sandy blonde swallowed, her throat dry and stiff. Her stomach felt unsettled. The colours in her apartment looked wrong, distorted. She opened her mouth, but the words that she ought to say jumbled in her head and she couldn't separate them into sentences. She felt dizzy.
"WELL, I certainly hope you'll do better than
this when you meet the Prince. I can see how you appreciate all of the money and time I've spent taking care of you after your poor father died. You
know it would be such an honor for us if you were Chosen--an honor for any woman! It's not like you have other prospects on the horizon, do you? You certainly don't act like it when I read about your goings-on."
That awful, sick feeling was not going away.
"No, Aunt Yoko. No, I'm just... I'm just surprised," she lied, trying not to retch. "It is an honor. You know I'll do my best. I always have, haven't I?"
That night she couldn't sleep. She laid there in the silence, staring into the darkness, seeing nothing.
