I had forgotten how DiC made it seem like Lita hated her old boyfriend whereas in the Japanese version it was more like she couldn't get over loving him.

I guess they thought that being stuck on your old boyfriend wasn't a good enough moral to show to the kids? Even though I don't think it was ever shown in a positive light in Japanese. She was either legitimately sad about it or it was used as a quick sempai joke. XD

It was, technically. Because they didn't want lesbians in a kids show, they just removed the romance aspect out of their relationship entirely and had them cousins instead.
