One thing I've noticed about the Crystal henshin scenes that hasn't been talked about much is that they seem to be missing the pseudo-nudity body lines that the henshin scenes in the original anime had. Can we take this as a sign that the new series will have less fanservice than the original anime?

Well, isn't Crystal more directly influenced by Naoko Takeuchi than the original 90's series? She may be trying to keep some of the things like that to a minimum this time around. She has put slightly more mature bits in the manga that can be interpreted as sexual, but they usually are executed a little less in your face than the random skirt flips or cleavage shots or "just barely not" nudity we used to get on occasions in the anime. I think Crystal is going to take that kind of fanservice out.

I never considered body lines indicating nudity in the original 90s anime as fan service... o_o I mean, it made sense for them to, yeah, be naked. They're transforming. Going from normal clothes to sailor fuku. The fuku isn't underneath like Superman's attire was. The clothes are obviously not hidden under the fuku. So...considering these factors, yeah it made sense that they were naked during this transformation, hence, body lines... And tbh there's nothing wrong with body lines indicating nudity? Usagi was full on naked in the last episode o.o and it's not like there was detail on her.

But this aside, focusing on the "fan service" side of the topic - no, I don't believe there will be fan service in this anime. That's not what Sailor Moon is about.

I'm actually okay with the transformation nudity, because that makes sense, but there some weird camera angle decisions in certain episodes that bothered me. That's probably the kind of stuff that Crystal won't have.

I agree with Mars. The original transformations aren't really fan servicey. It's just an outline of their bodies. If it were fan service then we see the details of their naked bodies. There are shows that do this. >.>

Throughout the series we have seen the girls naked, but that was showing the purity of the girls. Like the final showdown in Sailor Stars. Naked Angel Usagi. XD 

Nakedness is viewed as beauty in art. You can show naked bodies not have it be fan service or porn.

Plus the original show was made for kids. I am aware adult can still watch it, but the show was made with kids in mind. Also you have to remember the East has different views than the West. You really can't go into watching an anime with a Western view.

Yes, there's a difference between nudity for an artistic or metaphorical purpose and making characters naked for fanservice, and the Sailor Moon anime goes for the former much more than the latter. I'm just saying that there were some episodes where we got random upskirts that served about 0 purpose other than fanservice, and that's the stuff that should go.

What episode was that in?

It was little moments in some episodes scattered throughout the series. The "camera" would just happen to pan to an angle just under someone's skirt and stay there for a few seconds. I think it happened in that episode in StarS where Venus and Pluto were lost and they had to cross a rickety bridge. There's other times, but it's been a while since I've seen the episodes.

To be fair you can't see their underwear in their Senshi forms. You just see their body armor if you looked under their skirts.

I think I understand what Neon Genesis means. Of course SM doesn't have fan service like Ranma 1/2 where there are times girl-Ranma's breast are just...out. I don't think SM ever just had direct fanservice but it probably got close a couple of times to the point where it becomes subjective on whether or not it's really there. For instance, that shot of Jupiter when she's fully transformed during her henshin is one that I'm kinda 'eh' about. I've seen other's who have place that in the fan service bin too. However, they seem to be keeping that shot in Crystal so I guess it wasn't fanservice because I honestly don't think they would have kept it if it was.

The fansevice has always been very mild in SM but once in a while it happened. I noticed it more with some of the female monsters of the day

What to hear something funny? Ranma 1/2 was written for women and kids.  

It's true that the senshi are wearing leotards and armor, but it was really more the intent that bothers me. Someone had to decide on that exact angle that got a perfect upskirt/chest shot, and it seems really odd to do. I'm going to blame that on the animators though.

And Ranma 1/2 is technically comedy genre, and naked people are funny on a near universal level. XD

It is! For the longest time I thought it was shonen. I blame Viz for that.

I personally never really thought it was funny but I guess I'm in the minority then. It just seemed like blatant fanservice to me.

Maybe in the anime? I haven't read or watch the anime all the way through. It mostly for laughs because Ranma refused to wear a bra due to his manhood.

Yeah there were times when that old guy would like rip her shirt off and stuff. Like the way they had the boobs jiggling and stuff made it just seem like fanservice imo.

I don't think either anime will have fan service. Sailor Moon is not about fan service. Like Marsie said the body lines did indicate a sense of nudity, but is was a transformation sequence so of course they're gonna be naked :d! But being naked is also considered a sign of purity in some countries and also in SM (see Sailor Moon: Stars Episodes 199-200). In the last episodes while she was fighting Galaxia/Chaos she was stripped bare as she embraced her. So I can hardly consider nudity fan service in the slightest, especially since in the sense of Sailor Moon it's done artistically/tastefully.

Even if it is armor, the animators still are choosing to use a camera angle that is aimed at their butts.  I'm not saying that it is terrible  but there is still some amount of unnecessary showing of the "goods"

Please don't throw eggs at me, but I actually like Crystal being more decent (having less hints of nudity & up-skirts)..

In private, I enjoy insinuating (including non-monstrous hentai) Sailormoon doujinshis, fan-arts and fan-fictions but I prefer the "official" deals to be more "perfect, clean, pure and honourable".. you know what I mean?

I agree with the points you make but I think there was also always a subculture of older otaku fans who liked Sailor Moon for these fanservice elements and I feel like some times the animators were winking at those fans, considering the original anime was made by a more male dominated staff compared with the manga.  Like even considering the purity angle here, there was still quite a bit of sexual humor in the original anime.  Like when Umino flipped up Haruna-sensei's skirt in episode 2 or a lot of the sex jokes they had in Stars.

Again kid shows are different in Japan than in the west. Without a doubt old men were watching Sailor Moon, but there really isn't too much fan service. Yes some monsters have questionable outfits and there is sex humor. (American children cartoons have sex humor too. Look at 90s cartoons.) But to me I just don't really see the fan service. I honestly think only you yourself can determined what fan service is or not.

Guys they're fighting in mini skirts so there's going some weird shots. Maybe some are fan service shots. Naoko was the one who decided to put them in skirts. So blame her.

Most likely because the show is geared towards young adult. Also the first yoma and Beryl are showing cleavage. XD

I used to watch Sailor Moon with my male cousins all the time when we were younger. They were totally into the transformations sequences. I agree that nudity itself shouldn't be seen as sexual, but regardless of intent it ended up being that way for some American boys, haha.

I think now with the animation errors and other things coming to light, it's obvious that this new show is majorly targeted to fans of the old one who are now older women. I don't think we'll see any fan service if at all besides some cleavage here or there.

I'm pretty happy with the direction Crystal has been going regarding this, when we saw the character designs for the first time I was confident they wouldn't get servicey. Keeping the long skirts and making them look so elegant~ even with the costumes Usagi changes into, there hasn't been any odd camera angles. With 3 episodes in, pretty sure the show's "tone" has been set and we don't have to worry about it really :3
