It had been a nightly tradition for her mother to brush out her hair and talk to her, just their special time. Time she missed often after her mother died in childbirth. She was remembering one particular incident when she had chased her older brother away for intruding when she felt the tree shift, branches ruffling beneath her.

She froze, breath catching in her throat as fear sent adrenaline pumping into her system. Heidi gripped her spear, holding it out in front of her, point down, and leaned over just enough to see what was invading her tree.

Akiko stopped moving and pressed herself as close to the tree as possible. She looked around her surrounds to make sure the coast was clear or as clear as it could be. Patience and moving slowly was the key right now.

No sooner had she leaned over to investigate the movement, it stopped. Fearful and curious, Heidi reached down with her spear and prodded at the area below her. Part of her wanted to wake Aurae, but at the same time she realized that until she knew what was there, it would be more dangerous to yell. So prodding it was.

Akiko stared in slight amusement at the scene before her. Right now the phrase patience is a virtue came to her mind.

Feeling nothing, Heidi leaned back to think. Something was down there. She couldn't hear it but she was pretty sure it wasn't the wind that made the tree move. At least she didn't think it was. And she couldn't just stay up here, not if something was down there. Cursing under her breath, she grabbed her knife and clenched it between her teeth. With her spear firmly in one hand, she began to carefully make her way down one level of branches and looked again for the source of danger.

Akiko felt movement in the tree. She looked down to see nothing there and then looked up. Someone was coming down. She carefully watched their movements and and traces of weapons. Carefully she moved on her branch just enough to be out of the other person's way and site, but close enough to ambush the person. She tied her rope around her waist and to the branch to catch her in case she lost balance during the struggle.

Pausing and perching on the branch, Heidi grit her teeth in obvious frustration over not seeing anything. Something was here, she knew that. But it was so dark she couldn't see a thing. Biting her lip, she considered her options. She could climb up higher and set some sort of trap in case whatever it was followed her. Or...one hand stroked the back pack strapped to her front.

An idea was forming but it was risky. If only she could hear. Again, the urge to wake Aurae was there but she suppressed it. The other tribute needed her sleep and besides, Heidi was sure that if something happened to her, the noise would wake Aurae.

Unzipping her pack as quietly as possible, she pulled out her rope made of burned blanket and her lighter. Quickly she wrapped the tied strips of blanket around the tip of her spear, making a torch. After careful consideration, she climbed back up to her original position to put as much distance between her and whatever was out there, plus the branches offered some protection.

Letting out a slow breath she lowered the spear so that it pointed down between a gap in her protection screen, held her lighter against it, and turned her head to the side so what night vision she had wouldn't be immediately ruined by the flare of the lighter.

Then, with a soft prayer she light the blanket on fire, waited six heartbeats for it to catch and thrust it down. Another beat later and she was peering between her branches to see if the fire offered any illumination as to who or what was down there. She was hoping that the sudden appearance of light would throw whatever or whoever it was off guard. It was worth the risk since she couldn't see in the dark.

Akiko pressed herself further against the trunk upon seeing the spear turned torch. That kind of ruined her plan a bit, but that's why she had a back up plan in a case like this. Trying to stay away from the light, she climbed back down the tree, but still stayed close to the truck out of Heidi's sight and Aurae's sight if she woke up. Crouching low to the ground, she pulled out her box of matches.

Heidi grabbed a hold of her branch when the tree shook, for extra balance. This was starting to really annoy her. What in the world could be causing the tree to shake that she couldn't see? She really didn't want to leave the safety of the tree but after revealing her presence with the fire she couldn't stay in this spot.

Since she wouldn't go down, she decided to go up. But first she wanted to put out the fire, no use making more of a target out of herself. She grabbed her full bottle of water, the medium sized one, and cursing the waste, used half of it to douse the flames that burned at the tip of her spear.

Then, as an extra precaution, she took out her other blanket and wrapped it around her head to cover her hair and drape down her back, hoping the dark color would offer enough camouflage and that her pack on her back would be enough of a shield from possible projectiles as she moved. Then she slowly climbed her way up the tree about fifteen feet and looked down again.

She looked up when she felt the vibrations of the trunk move. Seeing that the other tribute wasn't coming down, she gave a wicked smile and looked up at the sky. She hoped the cameras were on her because she was about to put on a little bit of a show the sponsors saw during their first day here. Akiko lit two matches and place the tree on fire. She lit another two and tossed it towards the tree where the other tribute was sleeping. Not wanting to be seen, she quickly crouched and ran to the bushes. She stayed there until she made sure the zone was starting to catch fire, unsheathing her swords as she waited. Akiko will be surprised if they survived this.

The beeping goes unheard since Heidi's hearing isn't back and it wasn't until the parachute lands in front of her that she notices it. Blinking at it's sudden arrival, she stares at it, unsure of what to do. Here was something that could help her but there was something below her, unless it was all a Gamemaker's mind trick to drive her crazy, which she was starting to think it was.

With one eye on below, she reached for the parachute and flicks it open, not sure what she'd find.

Heidi had a split second to appreciate the usefulness of her gift before she noticed fire. Her first immediate thought was not one for polite society. Perhaps she had given the Gamemakers the idea with her own experiment with fire. All she knew is that she did not appreciate being on the receiving end of this one.

Quickly with hands that surprisingly did not shake, she stuffed her new compass, rope, and ration into her front pack and began to scale down the tree. She could have jumped to the neighboring tree, but with as high as she was and at the distance, she didn't think she'd make it. She'd rather risk getting burned, something that could be treated, than fall and break her neck. If she was going to die, it wasn't going to be her own fault.

It occurred to her as she skimmed her way down the tree that Aurae might not have woken and for a split second considered not yelling a warning. But the need for the other girl won over the need to let her die and she let out one quick yell, "AURAE! FIRE!"

Once she was down the tree enough she could feel the heat of the flames on her feet, she sucked in a breath and pushed away, flinging herself out, hoping she cleared the fire at the base as it spread outward. As she fell, she tucked her body so that when she landed she would roll, hopefully saving herself any broken bones.

"Oh!!" Tenka squealed, her cry loud and high enough to cause discomfort to some ears, "Look at that! Look! Did you see that?! That Akiko is a sneaky little thing! Ohohoh!" she claps her hands and bounces, delighted by the excitement on screen.

"She is sneaky, isn't she?" Natasha asked, crossing her arms and grinning at the screen. If things went Natasha's way, Akiko would succeed in killing the sleeping tribute in her sleep with the fire. Perhaps Heidi's alliance was certainly over. After all, She had ditched her "friend" in her time of need. "Just as worthy of donations as I was back then, eh, Tenka, Mercury?"

The Arena wrote:: Gritting her teeth from the impact of her landing, Heidi yanked the blanket off her head and used it to smother the flames before crawling to her feet. She couldn't tell if she was burned and with no hearing she had no idea if Aurae made it out of the tree or not. She didn't even know if the fire was something natural (natural being Gamemaker set) or if someone had mimicked her own firestarting antics. All she knew is that there was a fire, a chance that another tribute was here, and she wasn't staying.

She turned to run to the one area she hadn't yet explored.

Akiko looked to her right in amazement that Heidi rolled into her after jumping from the tree. She couldn't believe her luck! Not bothering to stall. She charged at Heidi and kicked her in the head hard to stun her at least before attempting to slice her throat.

"Shhhshhh," Tenka hushed, watching the screen in rapt fascination. A battle was beginning.

Ari had been sitting in a secluded corner where no one would see her. She had managed to be quiet even when she had wanted to get loud at the death of the district two tribute. The girl had seemed like one that would have been tough to beat. She chuckled slightly at Akiko it was a repeat of what had happened earlier but it was still pretty entertaining.

Rei nodded at Shimmer. "I hope very much that I have not wasted my money on Aurea and that she will escape this fire." She closed her eyes, as if to relive what she had just witnessed on the screens. "That Akiko! What a cunning little girl, almost taking out two Tributes with such a simple method." She glanced at Natasha and her new companions. Certainly, Akiko's Champion was in favour with the sponsors just now. Rei overheard Tenka talking about Flaffys, and remembered her own miniature giraffe sitting in her room at home, with its iridescent cobalt pelt. Oh, how she wanted an Elephabulous, although they were so hard to obtain..! Rei shook her head. She could introduce herself later (although surely the rotund woman already knew who Rei was - who didn't?) She smiled to herself before shaking her head. She was being distracted.

With someone as fabulous as Tenka behind Natasha and therefore Akiko, Rei was very aware that the other Tributes may be in trouble. Not that it concerned her, of course. Seeing the Tributes in trouble was the fun of it..! She bit her lower lip as she almost grinned in excitement and, with an over dramatic yawn involving a lot of hand flapping, she leaned right back in her seat, resting her head against the wall and preparing for an entertaining day.
