| I always thought he was a bit more romantic towards her in manga. In the anime he seemed a bit cruel.
What do you think? |

| I'm going to go with manga without even having read most of the manga, sigh. I don't know if he seemed deliberately cruel in the anime to me, but he didn't seem very interested most of the time; if he liked her at all it kept ending up coming across as a father-figure kind of thing, which... ehm... does not strike me as a good basis for a romantic relationship. Also wow Mamoru why the hell would you think it was a good idea for your future daughter to come along on all your dates? Class act. |

he didn't really seem like a father figure to me actually i just sensed he wasn't really at all interested like you said. for instance whenever usagi wanted a kiss he would somehow deny it and wouldn't really call her his girlfriend. -sigh- |

| OK, long-ish post ahead! I love Mamoru, and he's one of my top favorite characters partly because he's so under rated. It's totally true he's more romantic in the manga, but I definitely wouldn't say he's cruel. Mamoru loves Usa no doubt! In the manga, besides being more of a romantic, I think he's also more of a recluse. My memory on the manga is a little dusty while I'm rewatching the anime right now so I could be totally off. His friendship with the girls & other people is pretty minimal in the manga, though. While he really only opens up to Usa & ChibiUsa. In the anime, he still keeps to himself, but he definitely has more of a relationship with the girls. Even hanging out with them sometimes and letting them study/crash his apartment. I think in the anime, Mamoru is just alot more aware of societal pressures on their relationship. I mean, he's in college and she's in middle school. In the watchful eye of the public, the wrong actions could probably tear them apart. In the anime, Mamo, despite his cool reputation is just a dorky softy who is unbelievably self conscious and probably wondering all the time "How'd I even get this girl"/"Wtf is she doing??? Is she really screaming at a 4 year old in the middle of the mall. Oh God, please save me" Also, if we're gonna talk about anime vs. manga. Usa is a super ditz, almost annoyingly so in the anime. I still love her and she's the best, but she's definitely not as mature and her strength doesn't show through as apparently as it does in the manga. Okay, sorry lotsa feels here |

| I love anime-Mamoru basically "adopting" girls In manga everybody is more "perfect", so the comparison is not exact. Though anime-Mamoru holds my private first and second place of romantic for what he said in 34 before losing conwsciousness and in 46 before death. |

| Of course the manga Mamoru, his character is more fleshed out well and he is more caring towards Usagi. The anime version of Mamoru is dull and kind of irritating. |

| I think some of the issue is the age difference in the anime as compared to the manga. In all honesty, most people in their 20's are not interested in middle schoolers. They were in completely different stages of life with relatively little in common.
I always thought that in the anime, Usagi and Mamoru would have a great relationship in a few years when she got older and they could relate to each other better. |

| I always wondered why they made him so much older in the anime. It sorta grossed me out to be entirely honest. He's was originally supposed to be like 2-3 years older then her in the manga. That being said, he was far more romantic in the manga.

That being said, he was far more romantic in the manga. I agree with everything she said. I know the age gap being too large in the anime is purely subjective, but I myself am a fan of couples where the difference isn't larger than 2-3 years, so the manga/Crystal (because let's not ignore that Crystal did it right here!) version is perfect for me. That being said, I'm also not a big fan of his attitude in the '90s anime. I've said this to Artemis before: I'm a college student. Mamoru's a college student. If I saw one of my colleagues speak and act that way with a 14-year old on the street, I would kick him. Not cute and definitely not romantic. Funny thing is, the harassment angle could've easily been avoided if the age gap wasn't there to make it all so creepy... And I also agree with Adelaide above: the two are in completely different stages of their lives in the anime. While I see them becoming closer when they're both adults the truth is, Usagi is a child (barely a teenager!) and Mamoru is an adult man. Young man, but still a man. Add Usagi's childish behavior and mentality to the list, Mamoru's general calmness and the fact that Usagi is living under her parents' roof on her parents' paychecks; while Mamoru lives alone, has no known close relatives and most likely has to work to support himself - and we have very odd chemistry in their day-to-day lives. |

| Like some of you already said, I think the age gap between them in the 90s anime is just too large. And I really don't know why the producer of the anime made Mamoru that old xD Usagi could rather be Mamoru's little sister than her girlfriend xD But to come back to the topic: I think he is way more romantic in the manga. I'm not finished with the manga series yet but even the little bit I read has more romantic scenes than the whole anime xD Romantic-Mamoru scenes in the anime can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I always had the feeling that Usagi loves him more than everything and Mamoru was just like "Yeah, yeah, it's fine with me." (I hope it's clear what I'm trying to say ) However, Manga-Mamoru is the embodiment of romance compared to Anime-Mamoru xD In the Manga I get the feeling that they REALLY LOVE EACH OTHER. Here and there were always romantic scenes between them and you really get the impression that Mamoru can't live without Usagi as well as Usagi can't without him. Maybe it's just me but I never had this feeling when I watched the anime. To put it in a nutshell: Manga. |

| Does anyone even know why they decided to bump up the age in the anime? Wasn't that one of the things that ticked Naoko off? |

| to be honest, in the original 90s anime he annoyed me a bit due to his personality and such and he really didn't come off as romantic. the manga definitely shown more of his character and personality and such and there were some scenes that were tooo romantic(like that scene starchild mentions OMG) |

This! ^ As for the aging Mamo up thing, I've heard it was an attempt to appeal to little girls' crushes on older men. Sort of like a fantasy fulfillment kinda thing. No idea why they couldn't have done that with a teenager though |

| Manga, definitely. In the anime, he seemed more like a parent for the majority of his interaction with Usagi (or an annoying older brother in the first half of season one). That's not to say he wasn't romantic at time, but I think the manga had more displays of him acting romantic than the anime. |

| Well I can't break it up a bit.
Honestly I really don't find him romantic. Yeah he's a bit sweeter in the manga to Usagi, but I really wouldn't call that romantic. Then again romance depends on taste. Like if a boy bought me pizza and we stayed home to play video games. I would find that romantic, but others wouldn't.
...it also doesn't help that I really don't care for UsagixMamoru.
btw I wasn't kidding about the pizza and the video games. That's my ideal date. |

| I whole-heartedly agree Mamoru is more romantic in the manga but I think in fairness to anime Mamoru, you have to look at Mamoru through the eyes of Japanese culture. I was listening to an anime podcast recently whose hosts have spent sometime living in Japan and they were talking about dating in Japan. They said that Japanese men tend to be much more shy inexpressing themselves romantically in public than Western men are, so in this regard, one can see anime Mamoru as more like the typical Japanese guy, which would make sense considering the anime is made by a mostly male staff, in contrast to the manga, where Mamoru is portrayed as Naoko's ideal of what a boyfriend should be like. You can see this in the R movie where Mamoru is shy to kiss Usagi when he finds out her friends are spying on them. The anime itself seems to acknowledge Mamoru is lousy at romance, like in an episode of S where Usagi says she's cold outside to hint at Mamoru that she wants him to cuddle her, but Mamoru misunderstands and thinks Usagi wants to go inside and have some hot chocolate. Personally, I think while Mamoru is a bit of a dunderhead when it comes to romance in the anime, but I actually like his Tuxedo Mask persona across the board in all the versions. |

| Anime Mamoru had his moments, but I almost feel like those moments seemed odd when compared to how he acted/behaved/talked the rest of the time in the anime.
His portrayal in the manga was more... balanced? When he had his romantic moments they never seemed out of place. |

| He's defiantly more romantic and loyal in the manga. The two of them just seem more in-sync in the manga, their relationship more adult and mature. In the anime they were like two immature teenagers, and don't make me talk about the entire break up arc in the black moon arc of the 90s anime. EDIT lol I posted in this thread already, but I'll keep this post here since I added some ideas. |

| Definitely 100 times more romantic in the manga. However, he was never over-the-top romantic considering he was a pretty introverted guy (especially in comparison to the outgoing Usagi). Manga-Mamoru was a well rounded and realistic boyfriend. The couple had their ups and downs, were definitely not always perfect, but still had a loving and healthy relationship. I've always viewed anime-Mamoru as somewhat of a joke. He still loved Usagi and he did have a few good moments, but mostly he just existed for his rose-throwing and corny speeches imo. |
