| Welcome to the October Writing Challenge! What's a writing challenge, you ask? Writing challenges are when I give you prompts or specific guidelines you must adhere to in your writing or give you specific goals to reach and everyone who manages to do the task successfully is a winner. This isn't a contest, so no one will be voting or choosing winners. Everyone is a winner! Isn't that awesome? Well, as long as you meet the goal anyways. This month, our theme is.... *drumroll* Facing Your Fear/The Dark Side! It's October, which means it's time for dark and scary things! For this month, you may choose between two prompts: Facing Your Fear or The Dark Side. This means you get to pick a character and put them in one of two situations: where they are forced to face their greatest fear, or what their darkest side looks like. Don't be discouraged if someone has picked the same character as the one you pick and put them in the same situation; the beauty of character interpretations is that everyone has their own take! So someone's version of, say, Rei's dark side might be different than your own. So definitely don't worry about posting stories with the same character(s). And of course, keep all stories PG-13. There is no maximum word limit, and the minimum is 300 words. Everyone who posts a piece that meets the outlined guidelines above will win the challenge! And when you have won enough challenges, you got these awesome bumpers! So what are you waiting for? Get writing! You have until October 31st, 2015 to post your story.

| I hope this works, its been a LOOOONG time since I wrote anything really long or like this. - Love of my life??? An Ami Mizuno Love story. maybe...:
Love of my Life??A story of love of one, Ami Mizuno. Ami was sleep soundly in the afternoon after a morning of battling the Negaforce and woke up yawning and looked at her clock: 3:35. “Oh man that was a good rest and it looks like its past time for the mailman to have been here.” She then went to her front door and slipped her shoes on and walked out to get her mail. She reached in and pulled out what looked like 7-8 types of letters. She didn’t look at them yet but walked inside shutting the door and sitting at the table in the living room. “Bill..bill..junk mail…HMM? These 3 are addressed directly to me? Hmm I wonder what these could be about…” She opened one and begin to read it…A LOVE LETTER!! One of the boys in her class sent it to her. Ami’s symptoms began to start as she read the letter which included her face getting red as well. “Well that was unexpected…what is the next item… YIKES! not another love letter?? and this one has hearts and stuff on it..” She tried to get the strength to open it and she did even though her symptoms got worse.. She just skimmed through that one and set it aside. ‘How did these boys get my address anyhow in the first place? I might have to get Makoto to help me find out’ She then looked at the last letter and opened it..ONE MORE love letter??!! she was starting to hurt from the rashes she was getting as well as the nervousness. She grabbed the letters and ran to the trash and stuffed them in there. She then went and washed her hands thoroughly and dried them then went to her room and got in a nice warm bath and tried to forget about everything that just happened. What she didn’t think about though is that she had to see those boys in class the next day, but right now she didn’t care because she was relaxing in her warm bath.

| She halted in mid-brushstroke—the long pink hair still tangled in the bristles, heavy and wet. The halls of the Crystal Palace echoed only faintly with the distant footsteps of staff members. Few would be in the residential quarters at this time of night. Her room was quiet, punctuated only by the gentle breathing of the nearby kitten curled up on the comforter. Her ears strained for other sounds, but there was nothing.
Small Lady smiled to herself and shook her head. How silly she was, to feel so uneasy for no reason at all. She adjusted her grip on the hair brush and continued the nightly ritual.
She sat at her vanity table, her back turned to the mirror and her eyes and thoughts focused elsewhere. This was often how she spent the half hour or so before bed, reflecting on her day or planning for tomorrow. She had a few exams tomorrow, and Mercury may have mentioned something about an event or rally the royal family needed a representative for—apparently it would be the princess this time. She couldn't quite tell if Mama and Papa had other important work, or if they were just looking for an excuse to take a break. She supposed it didn't matter, either way.
It still felt strange being in the Crystal Palace. It shouldn't; it was her home, after all. Yet she found herself thinking of her attic bedroom in 20th century Tokyo. Her mind wandered to little things, like the way this room smelled: cleaning products and perfumes. Not at all cozy in the way the Tsukino house had been. She missed the sounds of other people close underfoot in the house, going about their own schedules and rituals. The quiet in the palace made her lonely.
Small Lady was older now, and supposedly more grown up, but she didn't feel any different. All these years and she didn't feel like a mature lady. Her childhood nickname seemed just as appropriate now as it was then, even as she yearly neared her mother's height. She might even be taller someday soon.
The princess sighed as she turned around, groping on the table's surface for one of her hair ribbons. Something caught her attention, and ruby eyes glanced up at the mirror, widening in confusion.
The long pink hair was the same shade as her own, but the long pigtails seemed thinner and lacked the intensity of her own hair's spiral curl. The face seemed narrower, the lips fuller and lined with lipstick. The eyes glinted, sparkling with malice. Centered on the forehead there gleamed an inverted black crescent moon.
Small Lady reflexively jolted backwards, and in that instant the image disappeared. The noise awakened Diana, the pale lavender-gray feline sleepily inquiring over.
The rush of her own blood and heartbeat thudded in her ears. "It's... nothing, Diana," she lied. |

| Hi Writer's Guild! I just joined a week ago and I saw this story prompt. It kind of got me thinking, so here is a very very belated story on the theme of "Facing Fears/Dark Side" I wanted to share. It is a Mako/Ami pairing piece because I found that Ami's dark side ("Amoral intellectual curiosity"), and Mako's greatest fear (being unable to protect someone) actually complement each other very well and work together as one story. This may or may not be PG-13. I've hidden the story just in case. Moderators, please let me know if this is actually past the PG-13 rating? There's no sexual content or violence, but the themes may be disturbing? I don't know. It's been a while since I've actually spoken with a 13 year old. Apologies in advance if my rating system is out of tune. Please feel free to delete if necessary. - Spoiler:
The house was dark when Mako got home from work. It was an uneventful day at the bakery today, and she looked forward to a nice shower before bed.
Makoto sighed. It was a shame that Ami wasn't home yet. It might have been nice to spend some more time together, but their schedules were unfortunately too crazy. Shower then bed alone. Mako sighed again. The sacrifices of being in love with a doctor.
A metallic clattering sound came from the kitchen....Ami was home? That's strange. She was supposed to be at work today. Mako had a sinking feeling. Somethign must have happened. Was she just sitting in the dark or something?
She called out into the seemingly empty apartment.
“Ami? Is that you?”
“In the kitchen Mako.”
Mako walked into the kitchen. Ami's silhouette was clearly defined sitting at the small table they had in the room. That table had been the scene of many emotional moments since she and Ami started living together. Breakfasts, dinners, laughter, tears... it bore witness to a rich life between two loving partners and their crazy group of friends.
Right now, it was the scene of Ami idly spinning a sharp metal surgical tool like a demented game of spin-the-bottle. Whatever it was, it looked like an ice pick. Mako edged into the room slowly, careful not to startle her distracted lover.
“Ami....please stop that. Put it down. What is that thing?”
“This is an orbitoclast. It was in that antique surgical tool kit I got as a gift last year. Did you know they used to use these to preform lobotomies? One whack. Up behind the eye. Shwick! No more thinking.”
Mako was at the table now. She took the ice pick away from Ami gently. The clattering sound was driving her mad and it was clearly upsetting Ami somehow.
“Talk to me love. Did something happen at work today?”
“I saved someone's life. He should be dead, but I saved him.”
Makoto blinked. That wasn't what she was expecting. The exact opposite in fact.
“I don't understand. What's wrong with that?”
“He should be dead. We were in surgery and the patient suddenly began to hemorrhage. There was no way we could clamp off everything in time. He should have crashed and bled out. He should be dead.”
Ami paused to steady herself, like she was about confess a great sin.
“I refused to let the patient go....I think I used my powers... I control water, and blood is like water right? I just willed the blood to stop flowing... and it did.”
“Oh.....”
Mako didn't know what to say. Times like these, the only thing she could do was simply hold Ami while she worked through the thoughts in her own head. She stepped forward to pull Ami into her arms as comfort when Ami stopped her. She wasn't ready yet. Mako's dread grew. There was even more on Ami's mind.
“I couldn't stop thinking...Did you know that the human body is approximately 48-60% water?”
Ami looked up at her. Mako felt a strange pressure grow inside her arm. She raised her hand slowly. Mako gaped in shock as her own hand moved as well – the hand still holding the ice pick. Mako started to panic. She had no control over this, something was forcing her to move from the inside.
She watched herself raise the ice pick in her hand and hold it out in front of her. It's tip pointed at Ami like an accusation. No. This wasn't right. Stop that! Mako cast a wide eyed look at Ami. It was Ami. She was doing this somehow. This felt cold - like Mercury's power.
Ami kept looking at her with a strangely blank expression. Mako could do nothing but watch, her body felt immobilized from the inside out. Mako couldn't even scream.
She watched as Ami dipped her head slightly, letting the point of the icepick rest on her brow.
She whispered something. The tears were flowing openly now.
“I'm sorry Mako. This was the logical extreme.”
The spell shattered. The pressure in Mako's arm disappeared as Ami broke into heart wrenching sobs. Mako threw the damn ice pick away like it was red hot, then hurried to catch Ami before she collapsed off her chair.
“I'm sorry! I couldn't stop experimenting!”
Ami tried to shove her away at that, but Mako had the advantage of size, strength and motivation. Ami wasn't going to face her darkness alone ever again. Mako was afraid of where that might lead one day. She was too afraid to even consider the possibilities. There was no way she'd ever be able to protect Ami from herself. All she could do right now was hold Ami tight and tell her that somehow, everything was going to be ok.
Ami looked up at her with tear filled eyes.
“Oh god Mako. What if I'm a monster? I'm afraid I can't stop myself."

| It looks good Driter! It didn't break the PG13 rules. A good rule of thumb if you're ever unsure is to leave descriptions vague. Like you can say there is blood but you can't describe the blood etc.
Ami's ability to control blood reminds me of blood benders from Avatar. |
