I hope it's okay I think this thread. I'm just curious to see where everyone stands.

Anyone else on the fence about watching the new season of SMC?

I'm going back and forth about watching this season. I'm glad this season will be only focusing on the Infinity arc. Hopefully the other soldiers will get the fleshing out they deserve and they'll update the story a bit. So it has my attention in that regards, but the art style. I don't know it feels like a fan design them. It reminds me of these fanarts I saw about a person's idea for a new season of Sailor Moon. It featured Usagi having a second kid and the other soldiers' kids taking up the mantle. It's silly not to watch a show because of the art style. But I just can't past the moe faces!!! This is what I feared, when Crystal was first announced.  

But it's not just an art style that is holding me back. I just feel like I won't get anything out of watching this season. I'm not a fan of the manga and the mistakes they made in the first season haunt me. Talking about the story not the animation.

I don't think you're alone. I have my own reservations and I've been trying to keep my expectations in check so I don't get disappointed in the end. But everything I've seen has been so promising so I'm getting excited for this season. 

I will admit that I do love the new animation style and while I've heard of 'moe', the style doesn't bother me since I don't watch a lot of other anime I guess?

I'm not a big fan of moe mostly because it's been over done. I'm just tired of seeing it.

I may watch the first episode just to get a better feel for the series.

I was very clear when i said that i hate this new chara design, i loved the old crystal one, but still i don't wanna start bashing or anything else, after watching the opening and ending and the new trailer it gave me a little hope and it didn't bothered me that much the new style...but still, like you said Yami, is nothing extraordinary and is already out there.

I'm personally just waiting to see how they do. I love the animation overall but there are aspects about it I don't like.

The one thing I know I am going to have to get used to are the cats' "polygonal" heads. XD I had to pause the video and stare at them for a minute just to confirm that I hadn't imagined it. lol

Now I'm really on the fence because I found out it will be 13 episodes. I thought it would be longer because they mention some acts will be in two episodes?

I think you have to wait at least a few episodes before making a final verdict on how the new season ends up being quality wise.  Let's not forget we started off with some high quality trailers and leaked footage for the first season and an impressive first episode and the quality started to drop after that.  So even if season three starts off with a bang, it should be expected that the quality will fluctuate in the middle.

I'm still a bit on the fence as well; especially considering how poorly animated the first two seasons were. Pretty sure a whole bunch of other fans are feeling the same way, I wouldn't think too hard about it.

Well I've already told you about this on tumblr, Yami, but I'll bring it up again for everyone else.

As far as moe goes, I find it ironic becuase Sailor Moon essentially started Moe. (Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_%28slang%29#Origins). Mainly from Hotaru Tomoe. Get it? Theres a bit more to it according to the wiki post, but essentially thats what its origins and its kinda ironic thats its come full circle?

Honestly though, you could look at any shoujo anime with cutesy girls and call it moe. So is all magial girl series Moe? I mean look at Tomoyo from CCS, you could consider her moe. To me its just modern, yeah I'm not the hugest fan of the style over powering everything in the anime market especially since I grew up on 90s and early 2000s anime but I really don't think its gunna end up being like this:

Tomoyo is consider moe? Ugh. I don't think she's even close to that. XD

I'm in the same boat, and I too found the similarity between that particular fantic and season 3 a bit jarring.

The merchandise art for Hotaru is what gave me mixed feelings about it.

I'm not in love with the cutesy style of season three tbh. It's even farther from the manga style than the first two seasons, which I felt were closer to it. I think I agree it's mostly in their eyes, but also how their faces are shaped that make the senshi look way younger than 14/15.

To be honest, I would have loved it if they emulated the original 90s style. As for they moe style in season 3, I don't like it, but don't hate it either. At least it's better in design and fluidity then the first two seasons

I think I saw a post on Tumblr which explained why people dislike the new style. They mentioned that the only reason people view the new designs as younger has to do with the lips. Naoko is well known for incorporating glossy and small lips, which is why her characters look much older than they truly are. Remove that, and we get a younger character with wider mouths and no lip gloss, which is exactly what the new design is. 

Personally, I'm more indifferent to them, I like both styles for different reasons. I like the rich colours and elegant feel of the old designs and the bright and vibrancy of the new ones. The new designs aren't that far different from the old designs, just less detailed and more fluid.

I was going to suggest Marco Albiero who is in turn imitating Ikuko Itoh's work (so thus I'd say Princess Tutu would be a good example to look at). I felt Ikuko Itoh was the best art out of the 90s series and I would've loved seeing a modern version of that style. I could even see a blend of the current style with Ikuko Itoh's. I think that would have looked great.

I personally like what SMC is offering so far now.

I wouldn't have liked Crystal looking like an updated 90s anime. I mean I probably would've still watched it but I don't see the point of it. The 90s anime had it's time.

I agree. SMC is a new interpretion of Sailor Moon that hardens more to the manga in story and tone than the old anime. it would've been nostalgic but boring if it was the same art style again as we saw in the past. All art is subjective, so I'm not surprised that some people hate it while others love it.

I agree with both.  I watched the first episode of the new season and I was like what?  with the design of the girls.  I'm very indifferent.  I wish they kept the design of the first two arcs but with shorter legs and not have the girls be as lanky.
