Subject: China - Pairs Figure Skating 27th August 2015, 1:11 pm
Okay, now that you're finished with the threads on more general aspects of Chinese culture, here's one where I ramble on about pairs figure skating because it's the only topic about China I can write about without help. Sorry.
So, China is commonly seen as the second best nation in this discipline after Russia, and it has a relatively unbroken streak of pairs champions from 1998 to now.
The earliest and most well-known of these teams is Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, who debuted on the senior level in 1993 and finished fifth at the Olympics in 1998. The year after, they won the 1999 World silver medal, and finished on the podium for the next five seasons after that, picking up an Olympic bronze along the way. While an injury in 2005 forced them to withdraw, they were able to recover from it, and win an Olympic bronze and a World title in the next two years. They're most well-known for winning the 2010 Winter Olympics and breaking Russia's chokehold on titles there.
The next team to come out of China was Pang Qing and Tong Jian, who debuted in 1998, and won a World medal in 2004, kicking off an eight-year run of top 5 performances. They're known for having beautiful programs despite a lack of jump consistency, winning the 2010 World Championships, and still competing despite being 35 and 36.
After them is the unrelated Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, who also debuted in 1998 on the junior level, and won two Junior World Championships before moving up to the senior level. They medaled at Worlds in 2005, which also kicked off a six-year string of top five appearances which inclue three silver medals, and are known for having a high level of technical difficulty, like attempting a throw quadruple salchow. The pair split in 2011 due to injury, and Zhang Hao is currently competing with Peng Cheng.
The next pair is Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, who also debuted on the junior level to much success, and won three consecutive junior world championships in 2010-2012 before moving up to the senior level. They're known for having quadruple twists and throw jumps and being really expressive, and are the currently world silver medalists.
Another currently-competing pair is Yu Xiaoyu and Yang Jin. They're the 2012 Youth Olympic gold medalists and the 2014 and 2015 Junior World champions. They're known for elegance, and are currently moving up to the senior level permanently.
And this entire pairs dynasty happened because they first Chinese pairs team ever sent to Worlds in 1980 got laughed at during the competition and finished in last place.
Enjoy. Sorry.

I used to do figure skating when I was younger and I must admit it has been my favorite topic here along with the holidays one I'll probably go check on youtube for those teams after I get to make the whole tour of the World Fair.
