I've recently been watching the SuperS season again, and a thought hit me that never did before...the senshi don't go to school, but Chibiusa does. I know the girls' last year of middle school was during the S season, but I just think it's odd that there is such a long break between them finishing middle school and starting high school...and it's odd that Chibiusa has school and they don't. Is there someone more knowledgeable about the Japanese school system than I am who could explain this to me? It's driving me nuts.

| I don't think it has anything to do with the Japanese school system, SuperS has a weird time frame in general. XD
I think it's supposed to be summer break, so Chibiusa would be doing summer programs, not actual school. |

Seems plausible...she just seems to be at school all the time. Painting class, sports festival, etc....it's just so confusing. Towards the end of the season it appears to take place in autumn, and by then I think the senshi should be back in school, but...I try to remind myself not to over-think it, because they just needed to make it stretch, but it drives me nuts -_-.

At that point I just say "the Dead Moon Circus was warping reality" and call it a day. Or the writers goofed hard on that one. XD

I always thought it was during summer break-but then again, Japan school systems don't have long summer breaks like other countries have. They have 4 season breaks. I have no idea.

I remember reading a fan theory that all of SuperS took place inside a dream and it's really whacked out but it's the only way to make sense of the SuperS timeline.

That's kind of what I subscribe to. The entire arc took place in a giant dream world, and in reality, the arc ended when the eclipse finally ended.

Oooh I like that theory! Also could explain the format change and why the Outers completely disappeared for that season.

It also would explain things like why Chibi-usa's friend has purple hair when she had brown hair in R.

The one thing it doesn't explain is the senshis' super fuku, since it's in the SuperS season that they all (minus Sailor Moon) get their Super powerup. >_>

They powered up in the dream and kept it after it was over. Pegasus still existed after all, he just wasn't in the "Waking" world. Or maybe Pegasus was just unlocking power they already had.

I have read, believe it or not, that it was the latter. And I think it was the former website A Nitpicker's Guide to the Sailor Moon Universe where I read it. I explored that website when it was up, and the guy behind it went into overly-extensive detail about every little aspect of the 90s anime series. And he had explanations or references to back up virtually everything he said. For background, I found out the Japanese school year runs from April to March. Why they only have one week off between school years, and why they picked then instead of the American system of early Sept. or late Aug. to June, I have no idea. But when I looked into some real Japanese schools and the websites for them a little later, it seemed to back up the April to March statement. Also, the guy behind Nitpicker's Guide pointed out that each sex has two different school uniforms - a summer one and a winter one. For example, the girls have shorter skirts on the summer one than the winter one, and there was some more-noticeable change in their tops between the two that I have since forgotten. He went on to point out that whether they use the summer one or the winter one on any particular day seems to be dictated based on the calendar, not on the weather. He even listed the episode #s where this changeover took place in each of the five seasons of Sailor Moon. Yes, the implication of the immediately previous sentence is correct. At the start of making the anime series, the intent was for each season to span exactly one school year in these girls' lives. But wait, I can hear you saying. They were in second year of middle school for both the original season and R season. Plus, they were in third (which is the last) year of middle school during both S and SuperS seasons. The former is explained by Usagi's wish at the end of original season - that the girls be able to re-live that year as regular girls, that is, without the additional burdens of being senshi. (That's why Luna had to re-awaken them at the beginning of R season, once Ail & Ann came to town.) And now what you've been waiting this whole long message for me to conclude - them being in last year of middle school during both S and SuperS seasons was one big goof! (The original intent was for them to start high school at the beginning of SuperS season.) |

I think in the manga they were in high school in the Dream arc. I could be wrong, but I think they take a break in the middle of the summer. I remember watching an anime where the characters resume school on August 31st. But I'm not sure what date their summer break started.

Japanese schools have I week breaks between seasons, but the summer one is 3 weeks or so long, so they do have a longer space between school years. And yeah, I believe the original Dream Arc took place at the beginning of high school, or at least started during summer break and went into the school year.

Japanese schools have a 4-week to 6-week break in the summer (depending on which source you use - http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/explore/calendar/july/summer-v.html & http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/explore/schools/q4.html say 6-week, and http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2150.html says 4-week). And as I stated before, the summer break is not in between one school year and the next one; instead it is between terms of the same school year (sort of like how the American school year is divided into semesters).

Oh, I know it's between terms. That's why I say they take a small break in the summer. It must depend on the schools then.
