[Advanced] Hypothesis YDuK8HE
Beautiful banner by Diana!

Created by Sailor Pluto

The 40th century is the era of science. The reign of Neo Queen Serenity and King Endymion has been cut to a close, and the royal family has disappeared from the face of Earth. The Crystal Palace has been taken over by scientists, who transformed the legendary structure of royalty into an immense scientific institute. The modern, beautiful Crystal Tokyo no longer exists - it has been replaced by glass structures, energy-efficient vehicles and machines, government regulations, and more. This new era was a typical utopia, entitled Hypothesis. But, as with any utopia, there is darkness within.

When Crystal Tokyo was attacked by highly-powerful anti-elemental weaponry and outrageously trained soldiers, the sailor senshi serving under the King and Queen were defeated within minutes. Stripped of their henshin pens and dignity, the senshi were driven out of Crystal Tokyo and forced into hiding, where they would remain for the rest of their lives in defeat, embarrassment, and solitude. There is no hope for them or their kingdom - the scientists hold powerful weapons, and the king and queen are no where to be found. The loss of their precious queen hits the senshi hard, and they no longer desire to save their kingdom. The reigning scientists claim that the people's opinions matter, but all that matters to them are the cold, hard facts. Science is everything - it is the flesh, it is the blood, the very soul of the world. There is no religion, no miracles, no magic. Anyone who denies this truth is entitled to severe punishment. The beautiful worlds of fantasy, fiction, and magic are wiped from the face of Earth, and with it: The Legendary Sailor Senshi.

But when a strange message arrives at the senshi's hideout, a chance of redemption arises. Will the senshi dare to accept the challenge, or will they choose to remain safe in solitude? More importantly, will they ever see their precious queen, and regain the beauty of Crystal Tokyo?

Makoto hated living like this, lurking on the outskirts of the city that used to be Crystal Tokyo. It was called Hypothesis now, after they had been driven out. She still couldn't understand how it had all happened. She had thought the Sailor Senshi were impossible to defeat, as long as they stuck with each other and the royal family, but here they were, trapped in the Outer Circle in an old abandoned house, King, Queen, and Princess gone.

She felt like a huge failure. She was the Senshi of Protection, and yet Sailor Jupiter could do nothing to help drive off the soldiers that had stormed the palace, no matter how hard she remembered trying. She should have tried harder, somehow. And now she couldn't even transform anymore. For the first few years after their exile, Makoto drove herself crazy trying to work out what she had done wrong, only to eventually come up with nothing. They were simply overwhelmed, and she might as well accept it. Instead, she started to channel her pent up energy, what was left of it anyway, into helping her fellow senshi survive. She would never allow them to get hurt again.

Mako often volunteered to watch the house for any approaching threats, or to salvage what little food they could swipe into a decent meal. No matter how bad the situation got, she didn't feel right stealing and sneaking around for things, and she wasn't exactly the stealthiest in the first place, so she left that up to the others. Though if there was anything physical she thought she could still do, she jumped at the chance. In her need to help as much as she could, Makoto found herself gravitating to Ami's side more than usual.

She could tell that Ami had become much more withdrawn after the rise of Hypothesis, and she did her best to be there for her, even if she didn't always know what to say to make her feel better. It hurt to watch her close friend blame herself for the situation they were in. Of course it wasn't Ami's fault this had happened. And as time crept by, they grew even closer. Makoto wasn't sure of the exact moment when that friendship turned into something more romantic, but it had at some point, and she found that she was fine with that. It was strange, since Mako had always thought she would want a relationship with someone like her sempai from long ago, start a picturesque family, and open up a bakery or flower shop. But she realized that she was just as happy with what she had now with Ami than she might have been with that dream.

Today, she was on watch again for a few hours, making sure no one unfamiliar came near the hideout. She wasn't as physically strong as she used to be, but a would be enemy would still have trouble with her, as long as they were human. Makoto stayed by the main door, eyes carefully scanning the nearby surroundings for anything out of place.

[Advanced] Hypothesis BgbjE4w

The recurring nightmare was back with a vengeance.

Ami woke up with a jolt just as the enemy in her dream delivered a terrible blow, Neo Queen Serenity’s name stuck in her throat.

Only she knew it wasn’t a dream—it was a memory. It was her last memory as Sailor Mercury before the power was drained out of her by them. She pushed away the thin blanket that now felt too hot and turned to the empty side of the bed. She already knew there would be no one there.

Ami always got the nightmares when Mako wasn’t there.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to center herself. Trying to chase the nightmare—no, the memories away. There was no use replaying it over and over. What mattered was to keep going forward.

That was what everyone kept saying, anyway, but the reality wasn’t that easy. Losing Neo Queen Serenity and the rest of the royal family was bad enough. Not knowing whether they were dead or alive—alive, of course alive because you would know if she’s dead—was torture.

But knowing who was responsible was worst.

Well, she didn’t know exactly who it was, but she sure as hell knew what they stood for. Just a quick peek outside the window could tell her that. Even from this far away, she could see the towering glass structures, the gigantic machines and their cold hard walls.

Science.

Every time Ami thought about that word these days, all she wanted to do was cry. She both felt betrayed and responsible at the same time. It was the one thing she believed in after all—beside Usagi and her friends—in this entire world. It was her dream, her passion, her future, her entire being. She’d dedicated her entire life into learning it, and when Crystal Tokyo was built, she had cultivated it, encouraged its growth alongside the magic…

And maybe, just maybe, she had planted the seed that destroyed them.

Ami was glad she no longer had her supercomputer anymore, because she wasn’t sure she could look at it anymore. It was one of those things that symbolized the now hated word, after all—the evil—and she was glad to be rid of it for once. When those people turned the one thing she stood for into a deadly weapon that destroyed her world and everyone she loved in it, it felt like a part of her had been killed. It felt like she was only going around with half an existence.

Feeling suffocated under the burden that continued to try and crush her every day since the attack, Ami staggered out of the room, trying to look for the one person she knew could pull her out of the depths of these dark thoughts. She knew where Mako would be even before she saw her. If Ami couldn’t stand to look at the new Crystal Tokyo, Mako seemed unable to tear her gaze away from it. Ami knew she was expecting enemies, guarding them the only way she knew how.

But she wished Mako had stayed in bed.

Her bare feet padded softly toward the main door and stopped just behind Mako’s taller frame. She never knew what to say—she was never good with words in these situations. And ever since what happened, Ami didn’t try to speak much anyway. Not when every other word threatened to end up turning into a choking sob.

“Mako-chan…” she called softly instead, though she knew Mako probably had heard her coming, so attuned she was to her surroundings.

Makoto stopped leaning on the door frame when she heard her name, immediately knowing who it was. She wanted to get back before Ami woke up, but that plan had obviously failed. She didn't like leaving her completely alone for too long, as Ami tended to get down on herself with no one there. Mako turned to face her, seeing the familiar pained look in her eyes. It was the nightmares again, wasn't it?

"Ami-chan..." she said, pushing aside her own fatigue to smile at her. Even though she hadn't done anything too strenuous today, she hadn't eaten yet, and it was starting to catch up with her. Yet she always found the energy to be happier around her. "Do you want to sit here with me?" she asked, inviting her to stay. Mako doubted Ami would want to go back to their room, and she'd rather have her company than continue to stand guard by herself. She felt better when she could physically see her anyway, instead of having to assume Ami was alright in the house.

The sound of Ami leaving her room broke the silence of Hotaru’s reverie. She hadn’t been sleeping much lately, which was rare. The scientists knew of her great destructive power and had knocked her unconscious before the battle had started. Her memories skipped from patrolling the perimeter of the Crystal Palace to waking up feeling somehow…less… and then noticing she was with the others, all stripped of their abilities as Senshi. Hotaru was grateful not to relive painful battle memories as nightmares each night like the others, but her constitution had become frail once again without the healing stasis of Sailor Saturn and the Silver Crystal. The others tried to be cheerful and minimize her responsibilities, but she knew it was just one added hardship onto their already desperate existence. So Hotaru kept her insomnia to herself, blaming it on her frail body when the others noticed.

Tonight felt different somehow though. Hotaru sensed the tiniest spark of a premonition at the corner of her mind. She had always been the most in tune to her other self while de-transformed of all the Senshi, though the connection had seemed dead since that terrible day. This night however, Hotaru couldn't help but feel a message was trying to come through. It was too indistinct to be intelligible, but she couldn’t help feeling something was about to come along and change their dire situation. The former Senshi’s lives had been in a holding pattern since banishment from the Crystal Palace, but Hotaru knew better than most that nothing lasts forever.

[Advanced] Hypothesis SailorMars_zps9021fab6

Rei had learned a long time ago never to give up on Usagi.

When they met, Rei remembered thinking that having clumsy, lazy Usagi as her leader would never work. They wouldn't be able to get anything done, and defeating the enemy would be practically impossible. Usagi proved her wrong.

Then there was a time when the future was at stake, and the past was attacked by powerful beings from a different planet. Lives were taken, and the destiny of Usagi's own daughter had been compromised. The power working against them was far too strong for Usagi alone, but still the senshi of the moon persisted and saved them all. Once again, Usagi had defeated Rei's negativity and showed her that there was always hope.

In the face of destruction, Usagi hadn't let them down. Understanding that Usagi was indeed a force more powerful than any other, Rei didn't lose hope that time. She got on her knees and fought for the sake of her friend, her princess. And again, Usagi held up her reputation of saving the world.

Rei had died later on. She felt herself being held by Usagi as her life drained away, her body fading without the support of her star seed. She had faith in Usagi, even in her dying moments. She knew her friend wouldn't let her down, not that time. Even without her friends by her side, Rei knew Usagi would save them all. And she did. Usagi saved them all.

The future of Crystal Tokyo had been compromised, and no longer did their city shine with the power of the Silver Crystal. Instead, it radiated with the technology of science, something Rei had never really liked to begin with. Now she knew why.

They had been thrust out of their home in the palace and onto the streets - without money, without a home, without anything. They were left would a queen, without their Usagi. For twenty years, Usagi had been missing. For twenty years, Crystal Tokyo was nonexistent and the senshi were wiped from history. But all throughout those twenty years, did Rei give up on Usagi?

No.

She knew Usagi wouldn't let them down. She could feel it. Whether or not the others had the same faith as she, Rei didn't know. But she knew in her heart that Usagi was alive, readying herself to save their future as she had multiple times in the past.

But where was Usagi now?

Quickly, Rei shoved the dark thought to the back of her mind. There was no room for pessimism here. She had to keep her head up, to spread her hope to the other senshi and keep their spirits up. She hated herself for what happened, but she knew it wasn't the end. She knew better than to give up on Usagi.

Suddenly, Rei realized how hot she felt. Laying on the floor, her body felt sweaty and uncomfortable. She turned, now facing Minako's back. Gently, she poked the blonde senshi's spine and waited to see if she was awake. Strangely enough, Rei found herself getting closer to Minako throughout the last twenty years. When those dark thoughts crept back into Rei's mind, she immediately turned to Minako, seeking the comfort of her big blue eyes.

"Minako?" Rei whispered, her voice barely loud enough for her to even hear. She didn't know if the others were asleep or not, and she didn't want to wake anyone. She had seen Ami and Makoto leave, but that was a regular occurrence. "Are you awake?"

[Advanced] Hypothesis BgbjE4w

Mako’s look was almost enough to be the healing salve for her heart. Almost.

Mako was, ultimately, her salvation. After the world had turned into hell, Ami would have lost herself completely if Mako didn’t offer her love that soon turned into Ami’s anchor. Mako’s understanding—her acceptance of why Ami blamed herself even if she didn’t agree, as well as how Ami would always be broken and never completely fully healed as long as Usagi wasn’t there—had really helped. Mako kept her grounded in the darkest days when Ami was tempted to go into the ocean, sink herself underneath the surface and never come back up again.

Mako made her feel as if she was still worth something, because Mako valued her more than Ami valued herself these days. Some days, Ami was sure she was still putting in the effort to survive only for Mako.

Ami never thought anyone could love her—and especially not after what happened to Crystal Tokyo—but against all odds, amazingly, Mako did. And in a rare selfish moment, Ami wanted to keep that feeling. That was why she was still here.

At Mako’s question, she simply nodded gratefully and sat down beside the other woman, leaning her head on Mako’s shoulder. Ami loved how... sturdy Mako was. How she was there to depend on both emotionally and physically. How Ami knew she would never truly drown in her sorrow as long as Mako was there, holding on to her.

“See anything interesting today?” she asked after a while. Not because she needed to talk—comfortable silences with Mako was easy—but because at this point, she would latch herself onto any reason to find some shred of hope, no matter how tiny, that they could get back what they had lost. And more importantly, that they could find Usagi again somehow.

Makoto shifted a little to place her arm around Ami's shoulder when she settled down next to her, bringing them slightly closer together. She hadn't realized how much she had been craving physical contact until just now, she thought as she caught her hand slowly rubbing Ami's exposed arm to warm it up. She liked being able to do things like this and not feel awkward about it, or worry about embarrassing Ami. She was really tempted to just go back inside now, but her shift wasn't over yet.

"If old buildings count as interesting..." she responded with a grin. The view hadn't exactly changed in the last two decades. Sometimes, Mako had no idea if she wanted to see something or not. She hadn't had a fight in a long time and the lack of any real action was starting to get to her, but...what if the same thing as last time happened again? She couldn't even think about failing to protect everyone for a second time. Was possible information on Usagi's whereabouts worth risking their lives? Slipping away and going into hiding might not be an option.

Mako suddenly felt much more subdued. What would she even do if those scientists came back? She hated doubting herself like this, and the thought of running even more sickened her, so she pushed the issue aside. "But maybe we'll get a sign or message soon," she said, trying to stay positive. The odds of Luna and Artemis finding them after 20 years was pretty low, but anything was possible, right?

[Advanced] Hypothesis BgbjE4w

Being there in Mako’s embrace was the safest and most content place Ami had ever felt in this destroyed world. It was funny how they just… gravitated toward each other, and then finally became one as if it was what was always meant to happen all along. The whole thing happened so organically that they hardly needed to put words into it, it just… did. And Ami was grateful for that, because these days, describing her feelings in words was not something she was exceptional at. Not that she had ever been good at that to begin with.

Mako’s optimism was certainly not one Ami could match, but then again, she never could. Ami’s way of thinking wavered between the logical and the emotional, but when it came to the people who mattered most to her, it became immensely difficult to choose. Her brain wanted to tell her that twenty years was a long time, even for those with very long lives, and the chance of Usagi still being out there and yet not finding them was immensely small. She knew the exact percentage, had calculated it and watched it dwindle with each day that passed, and that was why she never voiced the number aloud.

It didn’t matter, anyway. Usagi had always defied logic, defied any sort of limits people tried to put on her and created her own miracles. Usagi could not be put into a logical equation.

Even so, it had been a long time.

“Do you ever think…” the words got choked in her throat, and she wondered if maybe she shouldn’t even ask. “Mako-chan… do you ever… even just once… in these twenty years… think that Usagi’s…?”

She couldn’t say it after all. But she knew Mako would understand what she meant.

"Don't." Hotaru interjected sharply, surprising her friends on watch. "Don't even think it. If she or the Princess were gone, I would have sensed it, even without...without" She trailed off, unable to put the words together. Even though she hadn't been conscious and even after all this time, stating out loud their lack of powers was still difficult to do. And Hotaru tried to remain positive, to keep up everyone else's spirits as much as possible.

Hotaru looked again at Ami and Makoto's faces before taking a deep breath and moving closer to them.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I couldn't sleep and decided to take a little walk. I couldn't help overhearing."

Makoto unconsciously tightened her hold on Ami at Hotaru's voice, startled by her sudden appearance. Hotaru always seemed to move in silence, like a living ghost, and Mako could never quite get used to it. For a moment, irritation was all she could feel towards her fellow senshi, and then she remembered that Hotaru was technically still younger than her, and was only trying to help cheer them up in her own way. She had not interrupted them on purpose so it was silly to be mad about it. It was amazing that the frail girl had made her way out of the house at all. Forcing herself to relax again, Mako smiled at Hotaru.

"It's okay, you didn't mean to do it." She went back to the original question. "And if something happened to Usagi, I think we'd all know. We would have to feel something, right?" Usagi was such an intricate part of them, that at times it felt like she was the string binding all the senshi together, even in her absence. She felt even more sure of herself after Hotaru's statement.

[Advanced] Hypothesis Empty
PostSubject: Re: [Advanced] Hypothesis   [Advanced] Hypothesis I_icon_minitime2nd February 2015, 8:04 pm

Suddenly, a voice struck out in the darkness.

"We don't have our damn powers. If they were gone, we wouldn't feel a damn thing. Don't be stupid."

Cold and mechanically, Haruka's tongue seemed to have a mind of its own. Normally, she would have kept her own personal thoughts about her beloved prince and princess to herself-that dark and anxious feeling in her gut that they very well could be gone. As far as she knew, none of the others knew of this fear deep in her very soul. Was today's outburst enough to show her darkest thought to light? Somewhere in her subconscious, she prayed not.

Today was different. Haruka's filter was off, mainly because today was the 20th anniversary to the date.
                                                         ---------
It had all happened so fast; the takeover by them. She was in her castle on Uranus, examining for external dangerous forces on the outskirts of the solar system, same as usual. It's because of this, she was able to remember the date so clearly. That was her position that had been given to her by Usagi once she became Neo Queen Serenity. However, it’s not like the role was strict; Usagi was always a kind girl and always said that if Haruka were to ever take any break and join them in Crystal Tokyo, all she had to do was let the other senshi know so they could cover for her. Haruka was known to-for the first time in her life- leave her guardian post to join the others in the wonderland that was Crystal Tokyo. It was far more beautiful than anything that Chibiusa could have described, all those centuries ago back when the Queen was known as Sailor Moon. Crystal took many forms; buildings, sidewalks and even some trees. Yet nature was still abundant. You could find a gorgeous garden on almost every corner, full of life. Animals of all kinds were even at piece here; it wasn't uncommon to see a deer and a lion sleeping together under a cherry blossom tree, sunbathing in the sunlight refracted from every angle of the city.

It was perfect.

Was perfect.

That day when they overthrew the other senshi, Haruka had no idea. How long had the attack been going on by the time she, just out of habit, had her computer check the streets of the city? Haruka saw all the blood, all the chaos, and saw her fellow senshi stripped of their powers. Years later, she still couldn't remember how exactly their powers were stripped. Was it magic? Was it a weapon? It ate away at her very soul that she couldn't remember something so significant. Haruka immediately tried to access the teleporter, when a whole bunch of them emerged from the sector. She remembers fighting them and cursing them, driving her blade into their skulls and flesh. The small fleet was only 10 men strong, and she destroyed them easily. At that point, the teleporter had suffered severe damage; obviously they were trying to keep her from getting there. She remembers how hard she laughed. If they assumed she'd fall that easy, at the hands of 10 mere traitorous humans, they were damn fools!

Haruka, space sword in hand, took the risk and used the teleporter anyways. It worked, but not without her sustaining severe injuries. When she finally materialized in the Crystal Palace, she collapsed, and was met immediately by a numberless amount of them. They laughed at her, mocked her, and kicked her multiple times in the groin, stomach, and head. While one picked her up by her hair, the others beat her mercilessly-all this with ungodly speed. Haruka only managed to temporarily stop the pain by thrusting her sword under her arm, killing the one that held her down. She remembers a roar, a guttural scream of rage escaping her throat as she began to cut her way through them as though they were tall grass in the amazon jungle; the space sword her bushwacker.

There was no end to them, however. She eventually lost sight of the other senshi's bodies in the ever growing crowd surrounding her. No matter how often Haruka screamed their names, they never so much as stirred. Haruka remembers she feared them dead. The last thing she can recall about that day is an enormous flash of light and an excruciating amount of pain before she fell into darkness.

That and she could hear their beloved queen's hysterical sobs as her consciousness slipped away.
                                                                            ---------
The next two decades were hell. She joined the other senshi in hiding, and was often the first one to beat away anyone who attempted to capture them-or anyone who even thought they recognized the group. Haruka lost count of how many people she killed just with her bare hands. It was throughout these two decades that she learned just how fragile the human neck is. Through this  occupation, she’s obtained many many scars from those earlier years of being on the run. Some from bullets, others from blades, others from chains and whips.

Once they found a secure place, Haruka had taken it upon herself to guard the door. Years and years of guarding the door every night. It was hard for Haruka to remember, did she have a bedroll anywhere else aside from in the doorway? How long has this base lasted them?

All Haruka had to keep her alive was that door. Not the hope that they could reclaim Crystal Tokyo, not the hope that they could get their powers, not the hope that Pluto would come back from god knows where with a sudden solution to all their problems (She gave up on Pluto long ago.) not even the hope that the royal family was alive. No. The only thing that kept her alive was revenge; bloodlust so strong that she didn't even bother hiding it from the other senshi. Anyone that she didn't recognize; any set of eyes that would appear through that tiny sliding window she’d kill with her bare hands.

It was as simple as that.

Did the others notice Haruka’s change? How violent she has become? Probably. But she was the only one standing between them and certain ungodly death-who knows what they would do to them if they were discovered.

Haruka noticed the way the other senshi were looking at her; eyes full of shock, fear and-was that regret? sympathy? She didn't care anymore.

“Hey, no need to kill the messenger.” She scoffed, leaning against the door-her door. “I’m just stating the obvious that you all have apparently forgotten.”

“Our powers-“ Haruka made a huge dynamic hand waving motion, mentioning the entire room. She spoke slowly, mockingly, one word and syllable at a time.

“Are gone.” She finished with a snort. Unbelievable. Turning her back, she returned to her post. She felt comfort from that door; she knew every inch, every crack, every bolt, every creak.

It was all she had left.

[Advanced] Hypothesis SailorNeptune_zpsa219aaf8

Michiru slept the most.

It was strange to think about, but she seemed to be the only one out of the senshi who could actually get sleep at night. She would do her part during the day, remaining quiet and watching over the others the way she always had, and at night she would fall fast asleep.

But just because she was able to sleep didn't mean she slept peacefully.

Her dreams were always infested with horrific realities and alternate outcomes. She saw Haruka dying before her eyes, she saw Hotaru being mercilessly tortured, she saw Setsuna fading into nothing, saw Usagi being brutally murdered. It was always a repeat of the same deaths, the same pain, over and over again.

It was always Michiru's fears coming to life.

Tonight was no different.

Michiru's eyes snapped open, registering the fact that Haruka was not with her, and Hotaru was missing as well. Everyone seemed to be gone, except for Rei and Minako. The emptiness of the room made the aqua-haired woman feel cold and alone. She hugged her knees to her chest as her body trembled from her recent dream. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to erase the images of her beloved being beaten to death out of her mind. "Haruka, Haruka..." Michiru whispered, sweat beading down her forehead.

Where was Haruka?

Guarding the door, like she always had.

It was embarrassing, how Michiru had degenerated since Hypothesis's forgery. She used to be so determined, so confident in herself. Now look at her, rocking back and forth on the wooden floor of an abandoned shack. She used to be talented, to be successful, to be admired. But so much had changed.

And Haruka...Haruka had become so aggressive and so violent. There were times when Michiru even feared her soulmate's rash behavior. But the woman of embrace had always loved Haruka for who she was, good and bad. Deep down, Michiru knew the old Haruka was still there.

She had tried so hard not to depend on Haruka or Hotaru, but Michiru had lost counts of the amount of times she had woken up sobbing, crying for her family to be with her. She was such a burden to her lover and daughter, but Michiru simply couldn't help it. She had been broken, humiliated, and stripped of all of her hopes and dreams. Her future, her life as a senshi, her planet, her queen, everything had been taken.

Everything but Haruka and Hotaru.

And for Michiru, that would be enough. But how much longer could she go on if they were not by her side when she needed them?

[Advanced] Hypothesis Ip18v4_zpsf3a1fd10

Sleep didn’t come easily to her anymore. Not since…not since then. Why hadn’t seen the scientists coming? She was supposed to be the strategist, the one that thought several steps ahead of everyone else.  Yet she failed again. She let everyone she loved down. The Royal family was gone and at this point, Minako had to admit, if only to herself, that there was a high probability that they were dead or captured, explaining why they never returned, why Usagi had abandoned them to live like this, barely alive but not quite dead.

Ghosts almost.

She couldn’t be much of a leader if she kept letting people down and making huge mistakes like this. The last time had costs them all their lives in the Silver Millennium when she had failed to see the dissent into Chaos that was happening on Earth. Yet somehow her friends, could she really still call them friends at this point? She didn’t feel like she deserved to be their friend at all, still looked at her to lead them. Minako did her best, trying to keep her thoughts and doubts to herself, in order to remain strong for those who needed her.

“Yeah, I’m awake,” she responded softly, rolling over on her sleeping pad to face Rei.

A short, agile figure crept through the darkness of night, hiding in shadows and between buildings. A medium-sized parcel was cradled in the figure's arm, the contents within secured safely inside. There was only a few more streets to go before the destination would be reached.

Just as the figure had suspected, there was someone on guard at the door. Although proud that the senshi were smart enough to put someone on guard every night, it would only make the figure's job more difficult. With a silent sigh, the figure dressed in black crept through the shadows, grabbing a rock as they went. Hoping their aim was on point, the figure threw the rock towards the senshi's building. The satisfying sound of a shatter told the figure that they had hit the window, which would provide as a distraction for the figure to do their job.

Making sure the senshi on guard was gone, the figure sprinted to the front doorstep and placed the parcel outside, knowing that one of the senshi would see it when dawn broke. Before running back to where they had come from, the figure looked longingly at the building in front of them.

Without wasting another second, the figure sped off and away from the former-senshi's hideout.

The figure hoped the girls would make the right choice.

Hoped that they would become senshi again.

Haruka's head snapped upright, drenched in sweat. When was the last time she had fallen asleep on the job? Haruka screamed silently and punched the wall, and bolted to the sleeping quarters where the others slept. Heart pounding, she peeked in as silently as she possibly could-though she was sure her rapid pulse would be enough to wake them from their slumber.

Everyone was sleeping just as soundly-or as roughly-as ever. The pitiful excuses for blankets showed no sign of any external bodily fluids, no dark crimson stains were anywhere to be seen. Those who weren't tossing and turning in their sleep she investigated further, hovering over their bodies like a stalker, watching with bated breath for any movement of their abdomens.

They were okay. Everybody was okay. They were all accounted for. They were all alive.

Haruka's knees buckled the moment she left the room and went back to her post. Cradling her head in her hands, she sobbed. The last time she had been away from the others-they overtook them. The minute her eyes even opened from slumber, their unconscious civilian bodies strewn about the crystal palace-unable to be told apart from the living and the dead-were on her mind as though she had just seen it seconds beforehand. She sobbed and sobbed, her cries becoming less muffled and heavier, she gasped with each breath.

Oh how she had feared the same! Oh how she had prepared herself to seen blood and lifeless bodies tangled amongst the sad excuses for sleeping quarters! In those five seconds alone, she had already made a plan for a burial and how she would relocate alone and unnoticed. Haruka even knew where the next hideout would be-and how she would kill the next hypothesis bastard that ever so much as breathed on her.

But none of that was necessary. They were alive and unharmed. Haruka didn't fail them. This is something Haruka repeated out loud to herself as she rocked back and forth, trying to ease her anxiety.

She didn't fail. She didn't fail. She didn't fail.

Hotaru gently pushed herself off of the floor. She usually woke up before everyone else and it was a bit of a morning routine to enjoy the sunlight and silence. Despite their dilapidated surroundings, sunny mornings filled Hotaru with a sense of peace even after all this time and the mind-numbing boredom of their situation.

She quietly made her way around her sleeping friends and soundlessly exited the room. A smile crept across her lips when she saw Haruka slumped over at her post in front of the door. Hotaru often found her like this in the mornings. Despite how hardened Haruka had become, Hotaru couldn't help still feeling love and affection toward her adoptive father figure.

After all this time, she also knew how to wake the sleeping bear without causing the wrath of the sky to come down, second only to Michiru of course. Hotaru padded lightly toward Haruka, feeling strangely light and positive today. She gently woke the sleeping guardian.

"Good morning," she said softly. "No intrusions as usual?"

"I don't know I don't know." Haruka mummered hurriedly.Deep down beneath conscious thought, Haruka hoped Hotaru thought she was just lying down sleeping, not rather curled up in a ball, trembling with fright. Her eyes darted back and forth, as if scanning for an invisible intruder. Haruka abruptly, perhaps fast enough to shock Hotaru, sat up and began to speak as fast as a rapid fire shotgun.

"At some point I fell asleep which is foolish of me I know I never fall asleep never" Haruka had begun to pace, avoiding Hotaru as she went back and forth, back and forth madly. It wasn't pacing by anyone elses standards, but rather a very quick speed walk-Haruka was still the swiftest out of all of them, even now as she paces and rambles like a madwoman.

"There was this crash and I tried to investigate to the best of my abilities but damn it I was too tired I never should have fallen asleep" Haruka continued, ringing her hair with her hands. "I thought it was them so I went to check on everyone and at first I thought you were all dead but you weren't it was just the remains of my cursed nightmare thank god"

At this point, tears began to glisten in Haruka's eyes. She continued pacing regardless.

"I didn't fail my mission, you hear me?" Her speech was getting less erratic, her pacing slowing down. Being in the presence of someone else-specifically Hotaru, the child that she, Michiru and Setsuna had raised with love and devotion-was getting Haruka back into reality. Suddenly aware of her previous state of mania, she sat down. It was shameful, having someone see her like that. Especially Hotaru. She scrubbed at her eyes roughly, but instead of stopping the tears, they flowed faster.

"Damn it." Haruka cursed as the tears began to flow freely. "Damn it, Damn it, damn it!"

This was a disgrace. Not only did she fall asleep on the watch, but she let her anxieties and fears get the better of her and had an episode. Sure, over the years each and every one of them had their own bouts of depression and panic, but not her. Not Haruka. She had to remain strong, especially when so many of them were falling apart.

"I'm sorry." She blubbered. "I'm so sorry Hotaru."

What was she sorry for? That her blunder could have gotten them killed? Or was this embarrassment, having her child see her in such a state? Somewhere Haruka knew the reason for her tears, but she was too preoccupied with her thoughts that she couldn't find the answer.

[Advanced] Hypothesis Jupite13

Back in the bedroom, Makoto stirred from under the blanket she and Ami were sharing. After struggling to get settled again, the faint noises outside had grabbed her attention too much to go back to sleep. She reluctantly opened her eyes and sat up, looking around the room.

Hotaru was missing, and there were two voices coming from around the door area. Hotaru was probably speaking to Haruka then... The Outer senshi that guarded the door had been even more gruff and pessimistic about their chances recently, so she hoped Hotaru could soften her up a little more.

Mako yawned as quietly as she could and stretched her arms above her head before relaxing again. Now that she was awake, she wasn't really interested in going back to sleep. It seemed like a waste of daylight now. Instead, she laid back down and moved closer to Ami, not wanting to leave her just yet. She was still feeling guilty for not being there last time she had a nightmare, and was determined to not be missing when she finally woke.

[Advanced] Hypothesis 3120549547

At first Hotaru was taken aback by Haruka's swift pacing. She was usually gruff and cynical, but not panicked. Hotaru backed up toward the door to give some space.

"Haruka, what happened?" she tried to say, but Haruka was too caught up in her own frenzy of emotion to hear or answer. Something must have happened in the night to cause such a passionate reaction, but nothing looked out of place, and everyone was alive as far as Hotaru could tell when she left the bedroom.

When Haruka sat down in tears and apologized while crying harder, Hotaru rushed over and threw her arms around her adoptive father. At first she said nothing, as Haruka shook with sobs, cradling Hotaru in her lap. Hotaru knew saying "it's alright" would be no comfort at this point.

When the tears subsided a bit, Hotaru looking into Haruka's face with a bright smile, hoping to brighten Haruka's mood of such a cascade of emotion. The hardened exterior of the past 20 years finally seemed to have cracked a little. She decided to speak finally.

"Haruka-papa," a phrase she hadn't used in many years, "would you like to help me make breakfast for the others, before they get up? Or we could step outside for a minute to see the sunshine and get out of this tiny room."

Haruka steadied her breathing. She was no longer hiccuping with full-bodied sobs, and the tears were falling a bit more gentle now. She embraced Hotaru and kissed her forehead tenderly.

"Thank you, Hotaru." Words could not express just how helpful Haruka had found Hotaru's presence in this moment. The fact that Hoatru just retunred the embrace with no judgement made Haruka's heart break even more. Hotaru was a strong child-quite possibly the strongest one here.

Haruka released Hotaru and brushed her hair out of her eyes. Going outside seemed like a good idea, considering that something did break. With the two sets of eyes, it would be hard for them to launch a surprise attack anyways.

"Let's go outside, Hotaru." Haruka smiled-she hoped she showed enough enthusiasm, she had been severely lacking it as of late. "I think I can use some sunlight."

Haruka made sure that she was the one to open the door. The fears of last night bubbling back to the surface, Haruka swung the door open with a cry, hoping to scare off any predator that may lurk outside.

What she saw instead, was not any living predator-but a box. Haruka's throat clenched. Why would there be an undisclosed package right at their doorstep. This had to be a trap! A bomb!

"Hotaru, wake everyone up!" She screamed. "Hurry!"

Hotaru was far enough behind Haruka that she was able to see some of the package laying on their front stoop. Her eyes widened with surprise as adrenaline and anxiety surged instantaneously. She saw Haruka turn and knew what she would say before the words made it out.

She nodded curtly before dashing back toward the bedroom, this time not caring about how much noise she made.

As she opened the door, she saw the others in various position on their sleeping mats. Mercifully Makoto was awake.

"Mako-chan!" she said hurriedly. "Help me wake the others. Haruka found some kind of package outside the front door!"

Makoto snapped to attention and sat up again when Hotaru came back in, startled.

"Wait, what?" A package outside? That meant that someone knew they were here... Nodding at Hotaru, Makoto untangled herself from the covers and stood up.

"Guys, you need to get up, now!" Mako said, raising her voice. If that package was a trap, they needed to be awake enough to get away if they had to. Just who left that package anyway? She knelt down on one knee and gently shook Ami's shoulder. "Come on , Ami-chan, there's something at the door..."

For once, the commotion didn’t bother Ami. Mako’s warm body beside her provided comfort and protection that allowed her to sleep deeply, and it wasn’t until Mako shook her body lightly that she jolted awake. Her heart immediately started beating faster on instinct; she could feel that something was wrong from the voices and from Mako’s words.

“What do you mean something?” she asked, her voice still hoarse. She clumsily rolled out of bed, her foot half tangling on the blanket. As she fought to release it, she looked at the others. Hotaru and Haruka were missing, but the rest were accounted for.

Her heart still beating loudly, she stepped into the living room, half afraid of what she might find. Part of her was hopeful it would be good news; maybe a message? From Usagi? But the other part knew bad news was more likely.

They only ever got bad news.

She could see the package on the doorstep from where she was standing, and briefly—just briefly—she wished she still had her visor and supercomputer so that she could analyze the contents without having to open it.

“Who’s that from?” she asked the room in general.

Haruka remained at the doorway-putting herself between the package and the rest of the former senshi inside. As the others woke up and emerged one by one, her mind was already buzzing. Should she grab it and throw it? How quickly would it explode? What would the radius of the blast be? Haruka had already figured that if she were to throw it away from their base, she would loose an arm-at least. But how loud would it be, and how much damage would this building and the surrounding buildings sustain? If anything was going to make their hideout stick out, it would be an explosion. They would be investigating the source like flies on feces.

"Donno." Haruka shook her head, and examined the package from the distance she remained. The box seemed like any ordinary cardboard box that had been left out overnight-still slightly damp from the morning dew. There were no identifiable markings of any kind, no stamps or stickers with a too or from address or even a barscan code.

It was just a blank box.

And that just made it all the more dangerous.

[Advanced] Hypothesis Jupite12

Makoto followed Ami back into the living room, and found her, Hotaru, and Haruka looking at the package from a distance. They had no idea who sent it or where it was from, but they had to do something about it.

It theoretically could be an enemy, but why would the enemy leave a blank package instead of one labeled with the name of someone they trusted? If this was a trap, it wasn't well hidden at all. And if the scientists from Hypothesis knew where the senshi were, why didn't they just come charging in? None of the girls could fight them off anyway.

Getting impatient with everyone else's stalling, Makoto decided to just go over and see what it was up close. "We can't just leave it outside the door..." she said, before she tried to get past Haruka. "Come on, at least let me move it or something."

Rei's eyes snapped open and she sat up, swerving her head around to take in what was happening. By now, everyone was awake and alert, wondering what was going on. Moving her hair out of her face, Rei stood and glanced at Makoto questioningly. If there was a package outside their door, there had to be some sort of meaning from it. A blank box wasn't just going to end up at their hideout for no reason. In Rei's opinion, they had done a good job of staying below the radar. There was no way the box could have been from one of those Hypothesis monsters.

Rei walked over to the front door and leaned against its frame, her eyes staring down the medium-sized box. "I don't feel anything negative coming from it," Rei called to the others. Could...this be from Usagi?

Going with her heart, Rei walked over and picked up the box. It felt heavy, as if there were metal inside or something. She shook it, hearing a bunch of clanging around on the inside. What...?

Entering the house, Rei held the box for everyone to see, shaking it again so that they all could hear. "I don't think it's dangerous, but..." she paused, looking down. "I...don't think I can open it..." she said quietly. Rei had already let her hopes get too high. She would not be able to handle it if this was not from Usagi, like she secretly desired. "Would anyone like to do the honors?"

[Advanced] Hypothesis BgbjE4w

They all gathered there, staring at the package as if it might explode at any moment. But the fear made no sense. If it was going to explode, it would have already. If someone wanted to kill them, they would have done so while the senshi were sleeping.

As much as Ami hated puzzling things out these days, she couldn’t help it. It was the way her brain was wired. It was how she functioned. She could not change it any more than she could stop breathing.

And she had already concluded the package must be safe. In fact, it had a significantly higher possibility percentage of containing good news than bad news.

Rei came in and said she didn’t feel anything bad from it, then she picked it up. Ami heard the clattering noise of loose things inside. At first, she didn’t understand why Rei—brave, take charge, always confident Rei—looked so helpless at the sight of it and declared that she couldn’t open it. Ami would half expect her to rip it open already. But when she didn’t, Ami understood.

She didn’t want her hope to be crushed.

When she asked who would, Ami stepped up and took it from her, giving her an understanding smile. Ami didn’t hope much anymore, even if a part of her still clung onto a piece of it. But that piece was tiny, tinier than Rei’s.

And so she would take that burden.

And should this explode in her face, she too would be the one who deserved it.

With one quick motion she tore the flimsy tape covering the box and opened it. She gasped.

What she saw inside was things she had never expected to see again.

Their transformation items.

Haruka didn't need to look over Ami's solder to see what was inside. It hit her like a ton of bricks. The familiar wave of power washed over Haruka like a sudden heavy downpour, stinging her skin that was no longer used to its presence. Haruka's knees buckled, but no. She wouldn't fall down this time. Leaning against the wall for support, she fought through the shock and approached the box.

They were all there. The lip rods and crystal rods-as powerful and glorious as the first day they had obtained them. There wasn't a scratch or chip, no signs of rust or decay. The power of these items must have prevented any form of desiccation. It almost brought anger to Haruka's heart, seeing her pen so unscathed. At one point, she and her pen were one and the same. But now, her body has become scathed and beaten, and yet the pen remained holy.

Hadn't these fallen into their hands, all those years ago? If these pens were still around, what was the point of these past 20 years? Their anguish? Their hiding? Why did the pens leave, only to come back?

These were the thoughts going through Haruka's mind as she reached, slowly, through the box, her hand brushing against the others. She could feel the power in the other pens as well. Slowly and carefully as though it was the worlds most precious piece of glass, she held up her lip rod. The sun-once hidden behind dark doors and clouds-chose this moment to peak out. The lip rod caught the sun, and reflected the light throughout the dank building they've called home. A glimmer of the past, and a glimmer of once a long-lost hope shining through the darkest of caves.

Without hesitation or moving her arm, Haruka shouted the phrase that was always in her heart. There was a chance that this was still a trap, these replicas could have been designed perfectly by them-right down to the ebbs of power that flowed throughout their parts. But Haruka didn't care. If this were to kill her, she wanted to die a senshi, like she should have all those years ago.

"Uranus Crystal Power, Make-UP!"

Waves of indescribable power washed over her like the worlds most elegant of silks. Oh how she longed for this. Oh, how she had forgotten this. It almost didn't last long enough-Haruka always remembered this sensation going on for a bit-but when it was all said and done, she stood there, her shadow changed to reflect the sailor fuku she once again has chosen to don.

[Advanced] Hypothesis 3120549547

Hotaru stood away from the door as the others moved out of the bedroom. She had already seen the package and figured the others would push her furthest away as an act of protection. When she heard the clacking noise as Rei picked up the package, her heart rose. The premonition of the other night suddenly made sense, even though she dared not to even think to herself the contents of this package. The tension in the room reached unbearable levels as Ami volunteered to open the package and a piece of Hotaru's mind was surprised no one tried to stop her.

A lump formed in her throat upon seeing the transformation items. Memories suddenly flashed before her both good and bad. She could feel the weight of the darkness and destruction once more that lurked within and it's desire to be used. But she could also sense the healing empowerment of being a Senshi.

As much as she loved her friends, a piece of her resented how they began to treat her like a child once more, upon being stripped of her powers. Objectively she understood that her body had become frail once more and that they did not want to lose her like they had with the King, Queen, and Princess, but she was tired of being coddled, of superficial positivity when talking to her face.

Haruka's sudden movement toward the items broke her reflections. The brilliance of Haruka's transformation transfixed them all. Hotaru scanned the room, seeing the reactions of everyone. She could guess who hungered for the power once more, like Haruka, and who was grimacing or terrified of the idea.

In her heart, she already knew her own answer but she held herself back from rushing up to her transformation rod for two reasons.

First, and less so, she see the reactions of the others play out into their decisions.

Second, and most importantly, the darkness called out to her. The destructive power to which she was heir called out for revenge. Not just retribution against those who had stripped them of their powers, but the End of the this world perverted by grandiose scientific exploits of man. Hotaru feared that these thoughts were actually hers, buried deep within, channeled by the extreme power she wields, and worried that if she transformed now, she might not be able to stop herself.
