| Greetings World Fair Attendees and Welcome to Maryland!!! Quick Facts:
- Maryland is one of the smallest states in the US and is also one of the most densely populated.
- Our largest city is Baltimore, though our state capitol is Annapolis
- Before Washington D.C., Annapolis was temporarily the capital of the United States from 1783-1784
- The origins of the name "Maryland" is debateable. Some believe Maryland was named after Queen Henrietta Maria others believe Maryland was named Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
- Maryland has the highest median household income, which in turn makes it the wealthiest state.
(AND BELIEVE ME ITS NOT CHEAP TO LIVE HERE.)
- Maryland was ranked #1 by Education Week in it's nationwide quality reports (2009-2013)
- In 2008, Maryland led the nation in its percentage of students who passed the advanced placement exam (23.4%)
- 3 Maryland high schools were ranked in the top 100 in the country in 2009
- The Baltimore Ravens(Football) and The Baltimore Orioles (Baseball) are our teams. We love our birds!
- We are home to John's Hopkins University
Climate:Our climate can be best described using this graphic. In recent years, Maryland has been known to have some crazy and abnormal weather. We've had everything from oddly warm Decembers to most recently April flurries. Maryland also more recently seems to have a longer summer and winter period, with short fall and spring periods. Temperatures can hit as high as 90-100F degrees and down to 10-20F degrees. Maryland also is one of the more diverse states. Maryland has the coast and ocean to the east, mountains to the west, cities (Baltimore, Washington D.C., Annapolis) and also more rural areas where there is plenty of farming, forests, and wide open spaces. Food: Maryland food! Where do I even begin? We are known for our seafood (crabs and oysters in particular) and of course Old Bay Seasoning. Old Bay Seasoning is so popular we even have Old Bay flavored Potato Chips. Maryland is also known for it's produce and chicken (Perdue Farms is located in Maryland!) Maryland is also known for Smith Island Cake (thin layers of yellow cake with chocolate fudge icing separating each layer). Baltimore in particular is known for Berger Cookies and Lemon Peppermint sticks! For the 21+ crowd, National Bohemian Beer or "Natty Boh" was originally brewed in Baltimore, Maryland. If you ever go to a party in Maryland during the summertime. Don't be surprised if it's a crab feast! Have a drink and some crabs, and don't be afraid to lick the Old Bay off your fingers ! | Hahaha omg the weather graphic made me laugh. That's exactly like Scotland, but we're a lot colder. Four seasons in one day. Maryland seems like a really good place to live, no wonder it's expensive =p |
