As you can see, the English flag is very simple and not to be confused with the UK flag. It is made up of 2 colours, red and white.

Where is England?
England is a part of the UK. This is an ‘Island country’. It is located in Western Europe. France is directly below it and Norway to the east of it. The UK consists of England; Scotland; Wales; Northern Ireland. England is the southernmost country in the UK. It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.

A Brief History
The Kingdom of England existed from the 10th century to 1707. This kingdom included modern day England and Wales. Also, for a small period of time, the southern uplands of Scotland. The kingdom of England has no specific founding date. It came from the gradual unification of the various kingdoms that were formed after the Anglo-Saxon settlement. The minor kingdoms at the time were known as the Heptarchy and this consisted of: East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, Kent, Essex, Sussex, and Wessex.
So, that’s just the beginning of the Kingdom of England! Below is a couple of bullet points defining the events that form what we have today, United Kingdom.

-          Unification, 10th Century
-          Norman Conquest, 1066-1088
-          Laws in Wales Acts, 1535-1542
-          Union of the Crowns, 24th March 1603
-          Glorious Revolution, 11th December 1688
-          Union with Scotland, 1st May 1707
-          Union with Ireland, 1st January 1801
-          Free state of Ireland secedes from the UK, 1922

These acts, form what we have today known as, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. However, the respective countries still remain known as England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. But, are commonly referred to as the UK.

This is the UK flag which is a combination of the flags of the countries that are a part of the UK. Not to be confused with the English flag!

Do you know why the flag is called the Union Jack? I get the Union part but not the Jack part.

Here you go Marsy, missed your question. I funnily remembered this from a Doctor Who episode! The Wire, where Rose is having a go at the man for calling the flag by 'Jack' because they're not a sea!! xD

It is commonly referred to as the Union Jack, but Union Flag is actually the correct form as it only becomes a Jack when flown from a ship's jack mast. In Canada the flag is officially called the Royal Union Flag.

Note that the jack flown by ships of the United States Navy is also referred to as the Union Jack.

A Jack is a flag that was flown from the Jack staff on old ships.

I have been to England (County Kent) when I was 16 in June 1996 as part of a family trip with my Dad to France (Nord-Pas de Calais). I went on the Eurotunnel connecting England and France by a mere 26 miles under the English Channel (its station in Folkestone), visited a military museum and a historic castle near Dover. I know I heard English spoken, but the words are different from American English. The chef in a ferry on our way back spoke of "fish and chips" and "tomato sauce" is what I'm used to call "French fries" and "ketchup or catsup". I was told England has plenty of dialects and one revived Celtic language, Cornish in the area of Devon and Cornwall in southwest England.
