Have you ever heard the sound of thunder reverberating beneath a moonlit sky?

On the mountaintops, the echo is fluid, filling the crevasses and the valleys, skirting around the peaks of the range just to settle into the embrace of the landscape. Oddly enough, I find the crack of thunder to be both comforting and empowering.

Some would wonder at the image of a young woman standing on one of these mountains crests, alone and drenched, skin puckering because of the icy droplets pouring from the sky. Perhaps they'd wonder why she gazes longingly at the sliver of the pure white moon that shines through the dark cloud cover.

Truth is, I need to be alone. I need to be the young woman in the cold rain, letting my doubts wash away.

I had discovered the pathway from the Moon Kingdom to the Earth after following my Princess as her concerned guardian. All four of us know of her attraction to this planet and the dark-haired prince that resides here. Mercury...is far more curious about the land and the culture than the rest of us, while Venus herself has fallen for one of the generals serving under the prince.

That leaves me and Mars. Still, I am the only one of us taking the strength from this planet what it is willing to give.

I find these torrents of rain and wind to feel more like home than the ever-peaceful Moon Kingdom. The Princess doesn't know that I venture down here once I've seen her safely home. No one can know. Not yet. Relations between the two peoples are not strong, and I do not wish to stir up trouble. Her Majesty Queen Serenity has enough stress as it is, she can hardly eat what I cook for her.

I blink, my hair now glued to my forehead, concealing the tiara and its green gem. The white body suit is drenched, showing just a bit of my skin through the thinner fabrics, while the skirt and bows hang heavy.

The storm releases its fury in another crack of thunder, splitting the sky with purple-white lightning. The Moon is still visible.

A deep breath in to sample the air, the small hairs on my arm and neck stand upright as the charges around me dance through the atmosphere.

Mars has seen signs of unrest in her fire, only sharing her concerns with me. She is too wary to trust the rocky peace we have right now, as though it will soon be upheaved into chaos. "It's best to err on the side of caution", she tells me. "Do not be so quickly seduced by Earth as the others were." I can close my eyes in this storm and I just know...she's right.

I do not wish to tear my Princess away from this place. Any fool can see that this is where she belongs.

So, when the time comes, I will lay down my life to protect what she loves and desires.

That is why I am here, on this mountain top, training alone in the dark and the violent weather.

I swear so by my very own planet, Jupiter.

This is my oath.

I do not have the intelligence of Mercury, nor the passion of Venus. Jupiter's physical abilities far out-do mine. However, no one else has my intuition. Call me conceited for saying so, but it is a fact.

I meditate, often with the pit fire in my quarters, when I need a solution to a problem. The princess does not understand, and will often attempt to sneak behind me and pull some silly prank. I find it to be hideously irritating. In fact, she had interrupted me earlier-though the queen scolded her immediately after. She's since been quiet, leaving me to the pit before my eyes.

Before my door shut, the queen had shot me a look. Not hostile, but stern...and concerned. There was a silent understanding. There is unrest, and I am to see what I can with my skills. Though the queen hasn't said anything, I just know that the other senshi have been preoccupied as well. None of approached me...nor do I expect them to.

The heat of the fire has warmed me, and my mind begins to center. Around me, the world disappears. I focus on the flames licking the air.

The hair on nape of my neck stands on end, and I get this feeling in the pit of my stomach. Lights and shadows dance before me. I feel death and tragedy, though the timing of it is not clear. Soon, that is all I can gather.

The one image that has burned into my mind is that of our beloved Princess Serenity...her face frozen in an anguished death. It has knocked me out of focus before, I cannot bear the sight. My emotions flare up, and the image is lost. Rage and sorrow trigger a tear as I stare at the angry fire.

What universe do we live in where such a kind person can experience so much pain and anguish? I am disgusted, and I tremble.

Deep breath, Mars. Focus.

I inhale, the dry, hot air burning my nostrils.

Destruction.

I exhale, opening my eyes.

Chaos.

This cannot come to pass. It cannot! I will not allow it, I swear to the dark room.

I must focus. Can this be prevented?

It must be!

I will be sure that what I see is not our future.

Protect the princess...that is my duty. Beyond life and limb, into soul and spirit, I will give every part of me to this kingdom...to her.

My resolve is steady, burning on.

This is my oath, as the warrior from Mars.

From this room in the tower, you can see the palace layed out below. The people mill about, my fellow scouts returning to their rooms after bidding good night to Princess Serenity. I had left early to wash my hair, dirtied after training today. I guess it's a con to having blonde hair, particularly long like mine...it is beautiful but so much maintenance! The Princess is lucky to merely watch us train from a distance.

From here, I see Mars enter her room, the fire in her pit casting a warm glow through the window. Jupiter is missing again, which is no surprise. She has left training and not come back until nearly the next morning. None of us knows where she goes. Her room lies vacant. There are lanterns glowing in the library, while Mercury's quarters are left unlit. The Princess is the closet room to mine, with a similar layout, though on a larger scale. There is a passage in the palace between the two rooms, hidden behind some tapestries.

I see the shadow of the Princess now, her hair down, talking with Luna. My heart aches. I can't handle the sight.

Some days, I wonder why I was born as a leader of such an important group of people. The other three scouts rely on each other, but on me most. The Queen has assigned me special duties, years ago when Princess Serenity was a mere infant. Just as my planet is most similar to the Earth we protect, I am the most similar to the Princess. These duties are known only to us Senshi, the Queen, Princess Serenity and Luna.

It takes all of my energy to lead the Senshi, preparing them for a time that one day may come, when we must lay down our well-being for the sake of the royal family. I must also accompany the Princess on every outing away from the palace...which isn't all too bad, when she 'secretly' visits the Prince. I tag along for a view of one of his generals.

Anything to distract me momentarily from how the Princess tugs at my heartstrings in a way no one else has before. Lust is familiar, but this feeling...

Blonde hair tied back, still wet, I turn to the window again. Serenity's lanterns are extinguished, the soft glow the cast hidden until the next evening. How cruel it is that she is forbidden to see the one she loves…to be near him. Yet, it is I that need enforce such misery. I cannot. I know all too well what it is like to be forbidden from expression towards the one you love. I have every desire to be beside Princess Serenity in times of peace and war alike.

The Princess does not know much of the rising unrest in the people of the Earth, and the paranoia of the people of the Moon. Under my order, none of the other Senshi may mention it to her. It would devastate her. I much rather the news come from the Prince himself, it may be more gentle.

My life was never my choice, which I accepted as a child. I will do my best to live this life in accordance to the needs of the Princess.

I will do everything to express my indefinable love for her.

I will willingly give my life to spare hers.

I have taken this oath, under the honor of my home planet, Venus.

The marble window sill is cool to the touch of my thighs as I sit with a heavy text in the glow of a lantern. Somewhere in the palace courtyards, the giggles of the Princess and of Venus can be heard. I am quite certain they are blathering on about the Prince and the General again.

I brush off the cover of my book, one I found in a deep corner of the royal library. It took me years to find, and to my hopes, the time was spent well. The title reads, in an old script, "Earth". That's all. Simple, direct. Yet the book is so large, and I know not even volumes of books this size could contain everything.

As kind as our Queen Serenity is, and as loving as Princess Serenity is, the people thirst for more. Perhaps no one has noticed, aside from me. The only other person here that may feel something is wrong is Mars. She, however, is preoccupied with other concerns. She doesn't think I've noticed, but she has spent more time locked up in her room in meditation.

I turn the page to a rough contents list. Most of the text is about the landmasses and its inhabitants, with the seas largely unexplored in depth.

For centuries, we guardian scouts have looked after the Princess and the Queen, who in turn care for the Earth. Before that, the Queen herself solely took responsibility.

No one questioned her rule over the Earth until it formed its own kingdoms. Now, they wish for independence from us, but equality in power. The people here on the Moon do not understand those on the Earth, so political tension was birthed. This is largely unprecedented, and I have been silently assigned with the task to learn about the people of Earth from a fully objective stand point.

The Queen has asked me not to worry the others, so I have not uttered a word of my task. I do realize my intentions are misinterpreted as a fascination to Jupiter, who regards me to be as hopelessly enthralled by the Earth as our Princess and Venus.

I see a few strands of blue in front of my eyes, and tuck them up behind my tiara.

Through the window, beyond the lanterns, you can see the Earth rise on our cratered horizon. It is a beautiful gem with a large splay of shapes and colors...each moment it is different. Always changing, from moment to moment and century to century. I can say with certainty that there are mountains where there didn't used to be, and the peeking of new islands through the ocean's surface.

Just like the land, the people are always changing…sometimes for the better, often for the worst. Just as the mountains have appeared, so has their wars.

I am not permitted to visit Earth myself, as it would raise suspicion. That doesn't mean I don't want to.

Princess Serenity once brought back a flower from the Prince's gardens. I have since pressed it in this book as a tangible reminder that there is another world, and that this text does not describe it in a just manner.

I am saddened by the thought that I may never see Earth personally, as it does not take deep thought to realize we are dancing on the brink of a war. Perhaps my research is ultimately in vain. I cannot let my resolve waver, for this is all I have to contribute.

I will do my best to learn about our possible friend or enemy thriving on that beautiful blue gem. I will report to the Queen as planned, with all I know, in the hopes that a stable peace may be attained. I will digest this book, inside and out, and more if I find them.

I will not let the future of my Princess fall apart due to a lack of intelligence.

I have a part to play in the lanterns glow in the palace library, cast away from the others in silence.

I will contribute my mind to the protection of this peace and the longevity of the Princess.

This is the oath I take, sworn by my planet, Mercury.

I do not remember much of what this galaxy was like when I was young. I age far differently than everyone else, staring into a void with naught but a cold darkness for companionship. Time passes outside my ornate gates at a different relative speed. I have seen the birth of planets, the birth of life. Too much to see, very little I can recall.

I do remember being appointed to my position by Queen Serenity, many millennia ago. She gave off a gentle light, much like the moon she came to rule at the time. Imagine my joy when Princess Serenity joined us! Then, my pang of sorrow, for I must not be known by anyone but the Queen.

I am to guard the gates of time and space. I am one of the closest guardians to the moon, yet am the most distant. It bothered me at first, but I have grown content to watch the beloved princess and her court from afar. Each has their own strengths, their own weaknesses. Together, their bond is seemingly unbreakable.

However...as I live outside of time, I know what has happened in their world, and what will happen. It is one in the same to me. It is with a heavy heart that I watch the playful princess visit the Earth prince. Their love is their demise, and only now have the senshi begun to feel this.

I know the war will happen...but oddly enough, I cannot see further in that timeline. There is my true concern...I have not ever before been unable to see a place in time or space. I have never gotten goose bumps before, despite the constant chill in the air, but this anomaly has me on edge.

I strain to look into the darkness for a hint of what is to come, but to no avail.

Just...mist. Darkness.

The Unknown.

I have my assigned duties. I will not waver, no matter the pain I see outside of my world.

No matter the suffering beyond the Unknown, no matter the heart-wrenching screams, I will stand my ground at the gates.

As Sailor Pluto, I have no choice.

Wow, I very much enjoyed this collection of interrelated one-shots. I especially like the different course Sailor Pluto's oath was forced to take.

How will these oaths relate to a larger piece? I am intrigued to see you develop the relationships between the characters.

Thank you very much! (: I had even debated writing one up for Saturn, Neptune and Uranus...but they were so separated from the Moon Kingdom itself during that era, it seemed unreasonable.

The tentative larger piece will likely be told from the perspectives of the four inner senshi, with Pluto as something of a narrator (considering she'd bear witness from the outside looking in). It's likely that I'll want to cover from the time unrest is noticed to when they all die....so, the war and whatnot.
