So now the manga is being re-released a bunch of us are either discovering it for the first time (me! me!) or revisiting it, and I thought it would be fun to have a running series of discussions about the manga, focusing in on one chapter at a time.

Basically, I would post a thread here in the spoilers section titled something like "Manga read-through: volume 1, chapter 1" at regular intervals, and those threads would be for detailed discussion of & reactions to that part of the manga. & squee as applicable of course.

That sounds like a cool idea! I like reaction threads, either by episode/storyline or by page (for webcomics.) I think it'll work out pretty well.

Brit - for preference, tho if anyone can't get access to it and wants to join in they should be able to just note down what version they're reading when they comment.

That makes sense. Well, i assume most are either going to go off the Kodansha one or a scanlation since (unless you already own them) the Mixx ones are hard to find.

This sounds pretty interesting. It would be nice to discuss things such as the progression and evolution of the characters, the particular presentation of each act (or what part of the story it has to convey), and how well the act fits into the build of the story. Appreciating the manga as both entertainment and literature with several people involved could lead to new insights.

No, not specifically - not least because not everyone gets the volumes right on the release date (speaking as someone who has to import them, heh). But I'll put up the first post later this week (friday, I think), and we'll see how it goes.

This would also be ideal for comparing translations. Having Miss Dream and Kodansha side-by-side, for example, would allow us to explore the nuances of words and phrasing.

This is just like comparing the translations of the NRSV to the New Jerusalem Bible! I'm geeking out!

(I have the old Mixx ones, but they're at my parents house...which is totally where I don't live anymore.)

As soon as I get my scanner functional, I can compare the end of volume 1 (Kodansha) vs beginning of volume 2 (Mixx). It's pretty interesting how the art and translations have changed.
